ALS - Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift.

Jena 21.VI.1938. 3 Seiten kl.-4. Mit Umschlag. Dabei 4 Mikroskop-Photographien. - Beiliegend ein Brief mit eigenhändiger Unterschrift, Jena 16. XII. 1964. [Photo Album]: Pennsylvania Woman

Pennsylvania, New York, 1938. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10.5" x 12.5". Screw bound brown leather over stiff paper board with gilt decorations. Contains 352 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 5" x 7" with captions. Near fine photo album with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a young Pennsylvania woman beginning in 1938 and continuing through 1949. The album begins with trips the family took in Pennsylvania in 1938 including one to Camp Adahi, Hopewell Park, and later the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania," Pine Creek Gorge. This is followed by a school picnic for the woman's middle school choir class with photos of people playing games at an outdoor picnic site. She also photographed her friends and family at the New Jersey seaside with images of girls in the ocean and crowds on the beach in Atlantic City. Her family visited Niagara Falls in 1939 photographing the Canadian side, rapids, and the American falls. Her 8th grade class took a trip around Buck's County, Pennsylvania and went to the Friends Meeting House, the Reading Airport, and Daniel Boone's homestead. Another trip in 1940 took them to Lancaster and Hersey and she also graduated from 8th grade later that year. In 1940 they went to the New York World's Fair which went on simultaneously with the San Francisco World's Fair. The New York showcase was the first to base itself "in the future" and used the slogan "Dawn of a New Day" and was also the site of the first science fiction convention. The album shows the crowds, parachute jumpers, the Perisphere. While in high school she was a part of the May Day court, participating in community day, and enjoyed leisure time with girlfriends. They went to Maryland and Washington, D.C. and went back to the New Jersey beaches and Camp Adahi almost every summer. Photos from June of 1943 show a woman in a WAC uniform and a girl graduating. There are photos from Christmas parties, Thanksgiving, and posing with the family dog. She participated in the celebration of "Decoration Day" in their town where she was in the color guard. Her prints from 1948 include a caption on each with the month, year, and "Reading's Bicentennial Year" on the edge of the photo. This includes the parade in honor of the 175th anniversary of Reading's fire department. The final pages show a beach trip to Atlantic City in August of 1949.An interesting look at a decade in a young woman's life through her school years and World War II.

Alesso Baldovinetti: A Critical and Historical Study

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1938. Hardcover. VG, slightest curves to the covers, perhaps it was titled on a shelf for a very long time. Red cloth covers with gilt title on cover and lengthwise along spine. vi, 253 pp. 162 bw plates. Kennedy spends much effort prying the reputation of Baldovinetti loose from the bonds of Berenson and Vasari, whom had shackled him to the murky depths of style and skill. Besides this, the reviewer from 1938 noted that the equally great purpoose of this book is to shed new light of the whole sphere of early Renaissance art, with mention of many other artists and how they contributed to the whole. Extremely scarce. The book received rave reviews from Elizabeth Wilder in her review, published in the 1939 Art Bulletin.

        "...And Nothing Long".

London, Constable & Co., 1938. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, not price-clipped dust-wrapper, pp.vii, 327, fold-out map of the Transcaucasian Republic at the end; a fine copy; provenance: Duff Cooper's engraved bookplate, designed by Rex Whistler inside front cover, circular printed label 'Presented to the Library of the British Embassy Paris' stuck over upper margin of bookplate. First edition, in the rarely seen dust-wrapper, marked as second printing. More than just what the Daily Telegraph wrote, ' ... makes your flesh creep ... A fine story of a heroic muddle' (front flap of wrapper), this rare book contains the extraordinary narrative of Macdonell's long sojourn in Baku and the Caucasus as a trader, spy, and adventurer, who had been in charge of the Transcaucasian section in the Foreign Office. He reports on the Revolution, counter-Rrevolution, Armenia, geopolitical wranglings between Turkey, Russia and the Caucasian peoples. This first-hand-report is written with a sense of humour and humanity. The events in Azeberbaijan at the beginning of the 20th century made MacDonell, actually head of the Scottish Clan Donald, a pacifist, and very good travel writer. Provenance: Duff Cooper (1890-1954) was a British writer, bon-vivant, diplomat and, when he accquired this book, First Lord of the Admiralty. He resigned after the Munich agreement, because he would not support Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy.

A large vintage portrait photograph of Australian-born composer Percy Grainger, signed by him with a warm inscription and musical sentiment to American composer and electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott (born Harry Warnow, 1908-1994)

The inscription reads in full: 'To dear Harry, in warm admiration of his true genius, thanking him for his glorious first performance of "The Lost Lady", & in happy memory of one of the few electric concerts of my life (June 2). His friend, Percy, June 1938'. The musical sentiment that follows comprises the first three bars of 'The Lost Lady Found', the sixth movement of Grainger's 'Lincolnshire Posy', a collection of folk songs arranged for concert band. Percy Grainger (1882-1961) is well-known for his work in collecting folk music and experimentation with early electronic instruments; the inscription is singularly apposite. The gelatin silver photograph (an impressive 330 x 250 mm) is signed and dated by the photographer Frederick Morse ('Morse 1937', written in ink on the bottom right-hand corner of the image). 'After World War 1, Frederick Morse, a young professional photographer, built a house next door to Percy and Rose Grainger in White Plains, New York. He produced many of Grainger's promotional photographs during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s as well as informally documenting the Grainger household and Percy's eclectic pursuits. Their association became close, with Morse periodically working as Percy's secretary and as an occasional wrestling partner' (Brian Allison, 'Grainger Photographs', University of Melbourne Library Journal, 2000). The photograph has a little silvering-out to the lower right-hand portion, and its edges are a little darkened with a few trifling chips; overall it is in excellent condition.

      - [Shanghai 1938]. Leatherette binding, spine 3/4 chipped away & back cover lacks 3+cm. paper covering, book solid, sound, captions & preface in English/Japanese, 23 x 31 cm., 400 b.w photos, all in all good plus. FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITION *** **** *** . . . GRIM JAPANESE MILITARY PHOTOS: . . . THE FALL OF SHANGHAI & NANKING . . *** This work was the results of three photographers: the famous and celebrated Tamagawa Toyokichi of Osaka, the main photographer, who was assisted by Tamagawa Denn [his brother or ? relative], and Yamazaki Yoshimi. Each traveled with a different military group of the Japanese army in China, recording for posterity, the true and brutal Japanese take-over of civilian Shanghai and environs. It covers the "Incident" from July 7, 1937 -August 15, 1945. Co-editor was Nishino Yoshio. The work was officially censored by the Riku-Kai Gun Hodoh-Bu Kenn-Etsu, or the press bureau of the Japanese Imperial Navy and Army. The photographs were taken by Tamagawa Toyokichi, Tamagawa Hiroshi and Yamazaki Yoshimi. . * This photographic resource was taken to record the actions of the "Glorious Japanese Army" and their successful results in the Fall of Shanghai & Nanking, China's capitol. Japan's provocation for this battle was famous incident staged by Japanese politicians, known as the "Marco Polo bridge incident. "Wherein the Japanese claimed that on July 7, 1937, two Japanese military men were murdered at their post on the Marco Polo bridge by Chinese Kuomingtang regulars. After this a full-scale Japanese invasion of Shanghai and the rape and sacking of Nanking occurred. Japan's brutal air bombing of civilian targets continued. This is the record of that landing and those military assaults on the Chinese population and on Chinese soil. It was the key instrument for Japan to occupy China setting the stage for the Pacific War. . * Taken from the Japanese point of view, the whole work is a celebratory publication to commemorate successful Japanese military in action during the capture of Shanghai and the brutal Rape of Nanking. Ultimately ending in the Japanese establishment of a Chinese puppet government in Nanking. This was the ultimate goal of the Japanese to militarily and politically control all of China and Manchuria as found in the secret plan of war. . * This work contains superb photos of the victorious Japanese army and navy in action. From the beginning of this book, we are presented a grand view of Japan's elite and highest military officers. Excellent tipped-in photos grace this book, showing: Minster of Navy: Mitsumasa Yonai; Vice Admiral Kiyoshi Hasegawa and General Iwane Matsui; General S. Hata, commander of the Central China army; historic group photos of the commanders and leading officers; followed by a great number of action photos showing the advance, bombing, attacks on the Chinese and their cities. Panic in Shanghai streets as rumor spread of the eminent war breaking out. The removal of Japanese from China as they leave China homeward bound. War council meetings of the Japanese military as they prepare for the attack on Shanghai. Arrival of Japanese landing party: marines and soldiers follow plain-clothes Japanese agents who pointed out the enemy strong-holds. . China's early response to the Japanese invasion by six Chinese air force planes. Great battle at Character Bridge by Japanese sailors, and fierce attacks. Chinese bombardment of Japanese military vessels in Pootong. Cooperation of Japanese naval & army forces to bombard coastal areas; retaliation of Japanese air force. Japanese sinking of Chinese shipping across the Wanpoo River, and blockade. Tremendous & terrible attacks on the Chinese army and civilian targets. Eastern Shanghai, schools, universities, factories now main targets. Chinese poison water wells.         GOODBYE BROADWAY (1938)

Universal 1938 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Alice Brady, Charles Winninger, Tom Brown, Dorthea Kent, Willie Best, Donald Meek, dir: Ray McCarey; Universal. Lively caricature art highlights this poster for a story about a once-famous vaudeville and Broadway couple who arrive to play in a small conservative Connecticut town with a troupe of crazy performers. This low budget musical was a remake of the early talkie THE SHANNONS OF BROADWAY which featured real-life Broadway couple James and Lucille Gleason. The artist is not credited and the poster has a contemporary feel. It is on linen. There has been touch-up at corners and touch-up at fold lines and a bit of paint filling-in on lines and junctures. There are a few tears addressed just above the copyright at the bottom left corner. VERY GOOD-FINE

Die Liebesinsel. Komödie in fünf Akten.

Verlag Neumann & Co., Prag 1938 - Gr.-8°. 140,(4) S., mit zahlreichen Illustrationen. Illustr. Orig.-Pappband. The Scourge of God].

Dom Knigi Paris 1938 - First edition. 8vo (20 × 15 cm). pp. [5], 122, [6], frontispiece portrait of the author, unsigned preface. Original pictorial wrappers (most likely by Elizaveta Kruglikova); lower spine strip with small tears, a few minor spots to front wrapper. Posthumous first edition of Zamiatin's last novel, which compares the Soviet threat to Europe to Attila's threat to Rome. 'Attila's Huns are young and healthy, and they bring the promise of new life through the destruction of a sick and dying civilization. The tenor of the story recalls the message of Blok in 1918, that the West is doomed and that some new order, or at least epoch, is advancing from the East. This was no doubt partly due to Zamiatin's disillusionment with the West, where he had emigrated in 1931.' (Boris Thomson, 101) Zamiatin (1884 – 1937) is best known as the author of ?? [We], a terrifying first person account of an imagined (Soviet) future in which human beings have, at least in theory, become entirely rational and devoid of emotions other than joy. The novel is often likened to 1984, though of course Zamiatin did not have to use his imagination to the extent that Orwell did in order to picture life under a violent dictator intent on squashing dissent. The novel was met with a wave of criticism and Zamiatin's expulsion from the Union of Writers; a fate that meant the end of Zamiatin's literary career in his native country. Zamiatin consequently wrote to Stalin in 1931 asking for permission to emigrate, and was allowed to leave for Paris. He was allowed to re-join the Soviet Union of Writers in 1934 as a remote member, an unprecedented decision by the Soviet authorities. Zamiatin worked on the present novel from 1928 to 1935, but it remained unfinished at the time of his death. Savine claims that this edition was issued in a very small print run; Georgii Ivanov's novel ?????? ????? was issued by the same publisher in 1938 in only 200 copies. Savine also explains that much of the print run of ??? ????? was destroyed after the German occupation of Paris in 1940, when the owner of the publishing house, M. S. Kagan, was arrested.       - [Shanghai 1938?, Schiff]. Red silk accordion folded album, 21 hand colored charming sketches, 19.5 x 27 cm., mild stain on the first two pages and at the center on all other pages. FIRST & ONLY LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR *** *** *** . . A GREAT CARAIATURE OF SHANGHAI LIEF IN THE LATE 1930'S . . . DEPICTING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN . . . FOREIGNERS, CHINESE DANCE HALL GIRLS & PROSTITUTES . . *** WHO WAS THE ARTIST & AUTHOR FRIEDRICH H. SCHIFF [1908-1968]: Schiff was an Austrian-Jewish artist. He was a keen observer of the Chinese spirit, showing the more fascinating visual insights to Shanghai life. . Schiff arrived from Austria in Shanghai in 1930 when he was 22 years old, and lived there until 1947. His charming cartoons captured the foreign community's interest and many were also published in local newspapers and journals such as the China Journal & the North China Daily News. . He also illustrated several books on China, a suite of Shanghai postcards, and was attributed to decorating the walls of the Cercle Sportif Français and other clubs. . After receiving an invitation to visit Shanghai from a cousin Schiff lived there for 17 years, becoming known as one of the city's great cartoonists between the two world wars. . Schiff's importance lies, first of all in the fact he depicted indelible characters that manifest what it meant to dwell in Shanghai, then an international City. . "He manipulates his works as a form of attack. Socially marginalized groups, such as prostitutes, 'taxi-girls' and beggars, are all subjects of his scrutiny." . *** Gerd Kaminski, author of a chronicle and geographical study of the artist, described the opus of Schiff as extensive, ascertaining that cartooning was the genre that prodded him into telling stories from the point of view of a spectator on the street. See below. . * "Schiff's opus goes beyond cartoons and illustrations for newspapers. Artistically, he was equally excellent in landscape and portrait oil paintings, gouache and watercolor works," Kaminski said. . * "Schiff, from the very beginning of his residency in China, had already developed sharp eyes -not only in face-reading Chinese physiognomy, but also the social realities in which Chinese and foreigners were being subjected to." . *** THE SETTING: The setting is the "Roaring 1930's Shanghai" scene. Sketches depict the Free-Wheeling, "Anything Goes" wild attitudes of "why not" war torn Shanghai. . * THE SKETCHES: TWENTY-ONE HAND-COLORED DRAWINGS: . The first page shows a beautiful, slinky Chinese girl in Cheongsam: "Miss Shanghai: "Me no worry-me no care ! Me go marry millionaire ! If he die me no cry ! Me go marry other guy !!" . Followed by 19 other full-page hand-colored drawings. Some with and with out captions, the meanings obvious ! . These fascinating color-drawings shows how Occidentals inter-relate with the Chinese & western [mostly Russian] girls, Shanghai Party time English style, "Having a Ripping Time," American sailors caress and dance with their willowy Chinese girls wearing sexy Cheongsam split up to their hips. . Also stunningly beautiful, blond & blue-eyed Russian prostitutes with their Chinese sisters competing for the Yankee dollar. "Taxi-girls, "sing-song girls," bar girls, lonely and hungry house wives. . *** THE MEANING OF "MASKEE:" The tile "MASKEE" is a very old China coast Pidgin English corruption of the Portuguese word meaning "Never Mind." This and other Pidgin English was commonly used by both Chinese and foreigners along the treaty port cities on China's east coast since the 1820's. . *** THE HAND-COLORED ART WORK: Schiff drew the illustrations, then had the book printed in black-outline, after which he hand-colored each page and signed the title page, adding a hand-written number on the last page. . *** BINDING: The work was bound in various colors of silk [red, maroon, green, blue], with brocade designs, such as bamboo, or the dragon. There may have been other variant colors, we do n

        Exposition Wolfgang Paalen

Paris: Galerie Renou et Colle, 1938. First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 7 pages plus 3 black-and-white plates. An early exhibition catalog with a 25-item checklist. Paalen, a native of Austria, had recently joined the Surrealists and earlier in 1938 he played a major role in the International Exposition of Surrealism. In this, his third (?) solo show, Paalen debuts his fumages, paintings made by holding paper over a candle flame so it would absorb the smoke. A reproduction one of these works extends over the front and rear wrappers of this pamplhet. Soon after this show, Paalen would follow Breton to Mexico, where Paalen would stay, becoming one of the most influential Latin American surrealists. Uncommon and important. A reduced size version 35.4 x 26.2 cm. printed by Mourlot appeared in "Verve" (Vol. I, no. 2, 1938). Roethel, "Kandinsky, das graphische Werk," no. V.26. This scarce print is unknown to Roethel. The print is ostensibly based on a lost watercolor, according to Vivian Barnett in "Kandinksy Watercolours, Vol. Two, 1922-1944," catalogued at no. 1216 as "Comets for 'Verve' No2. She states that there is no number in Kandinsky's handlist for this image, which "is unusual" so it may have in fact been an original print and not a watercolor to begin with.         An album of 25 bromoil prints of Central Australia, individually captioned and signed (Hugo Keil ARPS) in pencil on the wide bottom margins; undated, but early 1940s? The images (195 x 245 mm or the reverse) are tipped in on album leaves (rectos only); these are cord-bound into the cloth-covered album (now slightly rubbed and marked); they are in uniformly fine condition

The Northern Territory Archive Service has an album containing the same twenty-five images, captioned but apparently unsigned. The catalogue record for that album (NTRS 3050) states that 'Hugo Keil was a photographer who worked at the Appropriation Ledger Section of the Allied Works Council in Alice Springs during the Second World War.... Hugo gave this wonderful album of Central Australian images to Phyllis Prideaux (later Johnson), which has come into NTAS as part of the Phyllis Johnson collection. Hugo took many photographs of Central Australian scenes, including images of Mount Gillen, the Hugh River, Palm Valley and the Spotted Tiger Mine at Harts Range'. An article in the 'Barrier Miner' (28 October 1938) makes mention of a forthcoming 'exhibition of Bromoil Prints by Hugo Keil of the Crown Studios, Adelaide', and a review in the Adelaide 'Advertiser' (21 August 1940) of The Adelaide Camera Club's exhibition of pictorial photography notes that 'Hugo Keil shows fine timber, sharply etched in "Grandeur of the North"'.
