        The Baby Giant Panda

Carrick Evans Press 1938 - This is a truly rare and remarkable book written and published as Japan was invading China in the Pacific precursor to WW II. Under war conditions the author was singularly determined to rescue the Giant Panda and to save the species in the only certain way possible which was in an American zoo. The story is riveting as are the accompanying pictures of the baby Giant Panda that was to gain so much world fame. The Panda remains endangered and also remains the subject of much affection and delight and is certain to gain even more appeal as the summer Olympics in China approach. This is a very special and rare book and the best condition copy available anywhere. Appears once read with a stight binding and clean interior. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fine (virtually pristine) with just hint of rubbing to silver inlay on upper cover joint; in Fine, vivid and vibrant jacket, without edge wear, chips or tears, marred only by small damp stain on verso of spine panel toe. This is one for the vaults. & "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . . " The author's most famous book, a literary classic, never out of print, and the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning film. " If Daphne du Maurier had written only Rebecca, she would still be one of the great shapers of popular culture and the modern imagination. Few writers have created more magical and mysterious places than Jamaica Inn and Manderley, buildings invested with a rich character that gives them a memorable life of their own." (goodreads) Until recently, Rebecca "was mostly viewed as an archetypal piece of romantic fiction, a twentieth-century rewriting of Jane Eyre in which a poor young woman falls in love with a moody, upper-class man, but is tyrannised by the mysteries of his country house. . . . [Du Maurier] intended it as a study in jealousy", [and] was trying to explore the relationship between a man who is powerful and a woman who is dependent. In recent years, Rebecca has increasingly been read as a key example of Female Gothic, and as a text that explores both the painful construction of feminine identity, and the instability of patriarchal power and social class." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         While England Slept

Putnam?s, NY, 1938, 1st American edition - This is the US title for Arms and the Covenant, a very appropriate title, which was probably too painful a reminder for the home audience. An important collection of Churchill?s speeches during the period 1928-1938 which warn all too clearly of the coming war.         To Beg I am Ashamed

London: George Routledge & Sons Ltd, 1938 - RARE. BANNED IN LONDON. When originally published its reception was hostile and it was considered "disgusting and obscene. "The Public Morality Council decided that it should be banned and caused the police to "lean on" the publisher so that the book was withdrawn. It was then published in Paris by Jack Kahane at his Obelisk Press, and many times since. Authorship has been attributed to many, including Graham Greene, Jack Kahane and Cecil Barr, but the British Museum's catalogue entry attributes it to Mathews with the "discreet assistance of Graham Greene." The attribution seems now to be discounted, and the book is not considered part of the canon, but it is still of great interest not only for historic Greene associations, but for the fact that it is an important addition to the great body of controversial literature dealing with prostitution, women's sexual and economic liberation. and official hypocrisy (GREENE, GRAHAM?) First Edition. With small stamp "Overseas Edition" on the verso of the title. Sm. 8vo. Pp. [4], 283, [1]. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in blue. Extremities rubbed, spine slightly darkened, one inch tear along lower portion of upper joint, corners knocked., internally clean and sound.
