The Tragedy of the Crater [in jacket]

Boston: Christopher Publishing House, 1938 Boston: Christopher Publishing House, 1938. First edition, with the very scarce dustjacket. Signed and warmly inscribed to Charles M. Kerwin by the author. 12mo, 110 pp. Maroon cloth with gilt imprinting on cover and spine. Near Fine / VG+. A virtually fine, nearly pristine book with just trace touching at spine ends. Bright, clean and tight. Rare jacket shows wear at spine ends, toning at the margins, is better than very good. Pleasants, son of the Henry Pleasants who designed the tunnel which was the focus of the Crater incident, borrowed his title from one of a series of articles in the Century Magazine [Sept. 1887] by Major William H. Powell, but also likely from common nomenclature for the event. In July of 1864, a federal unit was attempting to assist in the taking of Petersburg, Virgina, but was being forestalled by Pegram's Battery of the CSA, consisting of 278 men and four guns several hundred feet in front of the federal unit. US Army mining engineer Henry Pleasants proposed the construction of a tunnel under the battery, one which would involve more than 600 feet of tunneling, more than had been done in like circumstances ever before. On July 30, however, after some tribulations, the tunneling was complete. A massive amount of explosives was placed under the battery, and set off. The resulting explosion obliterated the battery, leaving, in the process, a crater 200 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 25 feet deep. Very scarce with the jacket, the signature and in near fine condition. Please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. L16

        A tunica inconsutil. Poesia.

Guanabara, Cooperativa Cultural, 1938. - Portrait, (1 l.), 320 pp., (2 ll.), with errata slip pasted to first leaf. 8°, original printed wrappers (spine browned, chipping at foot; front cover weakly attached). Minor foxing. Overall good. Author's signed and dated presentation inscription to the Portuguese poet Alberto de Serpa: "Ao irmão distante // ? Alberto de Serpa, // sempre lembrada e // admirado off: // Jorge de Lima // 1.9.38". ---- FIRST EDITION of the work that won the Grand Prize for Poetry from the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1940, and which Mário de Andrade called "one of the best [works] he has yet produced. . full of the richest and the most surprising imagination."Jorge Mateus de Lima (1895-1953), a native of União dos Palmares (Alagoas), was a prominent Modernist poet and co-founder of the Northeastern school. He is "acclaimed as one of the most spontaneous natural poetic geniuses of Brazilian literature, [but] he is considered by some to be a perpetually dissatisfied poet in search of new worlds to conquer and never content with his own brilliant performance" (Stern pp. 176-77). In 1931 Lima moved to Rio de Janeiro and began teaching Brazilian literature. His earlier works included, in verse, the precocious @XIV Alexandrinos, 1914; @O mundo do menino imposível, 1925; @Poemas, 1927; and @A comédia dos erros, 1923. Although known primarily as a poet, he also wrote novels, children's literature and art criticism. The influences on his work range from Parnassianism to Symbolism, Modernism and Surrealism. Lima is closely linked with José Lins do Rego in the founding of the Northeastern school. As a young man Lima was torn between becoming a physician or a priest, and although he studied to be the former, many of his writings reflect a religious temperament that seems to have become stronger toward the end of his life, for example in @Tempo e eternidade, 1935, and in this work of 1938. The "seamless garment" of the title refers to John 19:23-24, when the soldiers who had crucified Christ decided not to tear his tunic into pieces.@Provenance: Alberto de Serpa Esteves de Oliveira (1906?1992), poet, dramatist, essayist and book collector, attended Coimbra University for 3 years but was more interested in collaborating with the writers of @Presença than in studying. He published his first novel at age 17 (@Saudade do mar, 1923) and 2 collections of poetry a year later (@Quadras and @Evoé). But it was 2 later collections, @Varanda, 1934 and @Vinte poemas da noite, 1935, that led to his unanimous recognition by critics as an important modern poet. After his years in Coimbra, Serpa returned to his native Porto and became an insurance broker. He was imprisoned for political reasons in 1936, and at the same period became once again a fervent Catholic. Throughout his life he contributed to Portuguese literary reviews, including @A Águia, @Aventura, @Cadernos de poesia, @Cavalo de todas as cores (co-editor), @Diálogo, @Momento, @Presença (editor of the second series, 1939-40), @Quatro ventos and @Tríptico.---- Carpeaux, @Pequena bibliografia crítica da literatura brasileira p. 276. An American in Paris

[New York?]: Privately printed. [circa 1938]. First. Facsimile of the handwritten score. Folio. Full leather, ruled with a Greek key design, and lettered in gilt. Blue silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Fine. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed dated 12 April 1938, from Abraham Ellis to Gershwin's mother, Rose (who was the unmarried composer's heir). Ellis announces in the letter that he has just purchased the Manhattan Opera House (which became the Manhattan Center), and that with Rose's permission, he would like to rename the rebuilt auditorium the Gershwin Room. This was apparently a private photographic reproduction of the score that was produced for family and friends, before the manuscript was eventually donated to the Library of Congress. Gershwin's mother's copy, with the letter dated less than a year after the composer's untimely death. A classic of 20th Century composition, and inspiration for the Vincente Minnelli film, scripted by Alan Jay Lerner around Gershwin's music and starring Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, and Oscar Levant. .

        OUR TOWN

New York: Coward-McCann, Inc., (1938). First Edition. Hardcover. A tight, crisp copy in a beautiful dustwrapper with minor wear to the spine tips and a superficial scratch and tiny closed tear on the rear panel. The cloth is mildly sunned at the spine and to the very top edges of both covers with no effect on either the front cover or spine blue paper label. Lovely copy in a brilliant dustwrapper. Hard to improve on this. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a touchstone of American theater. After reading this play, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to Wilder comparing OUR TOWN to Homer's ODYSSEY and Shakespeare's HAMLET, stating: "That an American of the present day can create with such delicacy and detachment touches the soul like a miracle."

        Aunt Sara's Wooden God

Boston: Christopher Publishing House. (1938). First. First edition. Foreword by Langston Hughes. 271pp., frontispiece portrait of the author. Fine in a just about fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny tears. A novel by a leading African-American actress who played the wife of Moses in the play Green Pastures, starred with Paul Robeson in the important Oscar Michaeux film Body and Soul, and starred in the play Mulatto for a year on Broadway. For those with more modern tastes, Gilbert can be heard singing on the soundtrack of David Lynch's classic cult film Eraserhead. The author, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, set the novel in the rural South from whence she came. Hughes, in his introduction, compares this novel to Hurston's Jonah's Gourd Vine and George Henderson's Ollie Miss. Gilbert's collected works were recently compiled and edited by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Not in the Catalogue of the Blockson Collection. Rare in jacket, only the second copy we've seen thus. .
