FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF THE SEMINAL PAPERS THAT TOGETHER CONSTITUTE THE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF NUCLEAR FISSION. In the first of these 5 papers, Hahn and Strassmann complete experiments in which they had observed barium isotopes as the result of bombardment of uranium with neutrons. On the evidence of these experiments, the two then concluded in "Ueber den Nachweis" that the uranium nucleus had "˜burst' into atomic nuclei of medium weight. This was the discovery of nuclear fission. Their radiochemical results showed irrefutable proof that uranium had been split into fragments consisting of lighter elements. While Hahn and Strassmann discovered fission reaction, they didn't fully understand what they had discovered. In the coming years, Lise Meitner would provide an explanation of what Hahn and Strassmann had seen. In December 1938, when Hahn and Strassmann looked for transuranium elements in a uranium sample that had been bombarded with neutrons, they found traces of barium. The barium was detected by the use of an organic barium salt constructed by Wilhelm Traube, a Jewish chemist who was later arrested and murdered despite Hahn's efforts to save him. On the evidence of the decisive experiment on 17 December 1938 (the celebrated "radium-barium-mesothorium-fractionation"), Otto Hahn concluded that the uranium nucleus had "burst" into atomic nuclei of medium weight. This was the discovery of nuclear fission. On 22 December 1938, Hahn and Fritz Strassmann sent a manuscript to Naturwissenschaften ("Uber den Nachweis und das Verhalten der bei der Bestrahlung des Urans mittles Neutronen entstehenden Erdalkalimetalle" offered here) reporting their radiochemical results, which were the irrefutable proof that the uranium had been split into fragments consisting of lighter elements. Of this discovery, Meitner later wrote: "The discovery of nuclear fission by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann opened up a new era in human history. It seems to me that what makes the science behind this discovery so remarkable is that it was achieved by purely chemical means" (Wikipedia). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Springer. Die Naturwissenschaften, Volume 27, 1939. Quarto (10.75 x 7.75 inches; 269 x 194mm). 862pp. Full volume bound in black cloth over marbled paper. Very slight scuffing to the marbled paper and bumping of the edge tips. Gilt lettered at the spine. Clean and bright inside and out. Very good condition.

Frank Lloyd Wright signed blueprint of Monona Terrace Community Convention Center

Document signed "FLW' on off-white blueprint drawing paper, one page, 44.5" x 18". A blueprint showing the arches of paned glass from across the water's perspective of the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison Wisconsin. Frank Lloyd Wright originally proposed a design for the Monona Terrace Community Convention Center in 1938. His architectural vision for the City of Madison ?" a curvilinear gathering place that would link the shore of Lake Monona to the State Capitol ?" has now been realized. With interiors redesigned by Taliesin architect Tony Puttnam, Monona Terrace spans ninety feet out over shimmering waters, incorporating thoroughly modern technology and amenities with the architect´s signature organic design. It was nearly 60 years ago that Frank Lloyd Wright drew the plans that eventually inspired the Monona Terrace Convention Center, but if you wanted to go back even further, the words of another distinguished Madisonian on the subject echo across more than a century.

        American Photographs

New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1938. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of the classic, American Photographs published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1938 Walker Evans was the first photographer to have a solo exhibition at New York\'s Museum of Modern Art. Published in conjunction with that landmark show, the 87 images presented here revolutionized photography\'s documentary role, and the book\'s very design reconfigured the photo-essay into a complex, elliptical, hugely ambitious work. From its opening sequence of a photographer\'s shop, American Photographs declares itself not just a book about the world, but about photography. It constitutes a document of 1930s America so persuasive that John Szarkowski has remarked: It is difficult to know now with certainty whether Walker Evans recorded the America of his youth, or invented it (Parr & Badger I: 114). American Photographs established Walker Evans as a major artist. Commenting on the book in her newspaper column, Eleanor Roosevelt said It shows us contemporary America, and I think all of us who care about our country will be deeply interested in this record. (Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books, Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century). The book measures 9 inches x 7 inches and is bound in black cloth over boards with the title on a paper label affixed to the head of the spine and a photographically illustrated dust jacket (lacking the errata slip). The condition of the book is FINE- with very minor soiling to the first free endpaper and edges. The dust jacket is in Near FINE- condition with browning to the spine and edges and two very small chips and a small tear to the flap. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of a landmark book that is rarely found in such wonderful condition.

After swindling investors of over $600,000 in 1915, Musica opened a hair tonic company during Prohibition, since hair tonic and cosmetics companies were permitted to use large quantities of raw alcohol in their production. This hair tonic company was just a front for one of the busiest and most profitable bootlegging companies in the country. In 1926, the well-respected drugmaker and distributor
