W.C. HANDY'S COLLECTION OF NEGRO SPIRITUALS

. HANDY, W.C. W.C. HANDY'S COLLECTION OF NEGRO SPIRITUALS. NY: Handy Brothers Music Co. Inc., [1938]. Small quarto: printed wraps. First Edition. A collection of 32 Negro spirituals with an interesting association between two prominent African-Americans. Signed presentation from Handy on the title page: "To Editor New Age Dispatch, very good wishes, W.C. Handy, 10-6-38." The New Age Dispatch was a Los Angeles-based African-American newspaper whose editor and founder was Frederick Madison Roberts. Roberts is a direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson and his slave/mistress Sally Hemings. Information now reveals that Jefferson's 38-year relationship with Hemings produced seven chidlren, of which two died in infancy. Frederick Madison Roberts was apparently a direct descendant of one of these surviving children. Roberts was the first black man to be elected to the California State Assembly and served from 1918 to 1936. He founded the New Age Dispatch newspaper, became a friend of Earl Warren's, and helped found the University of California at Los Angeles. Very Good condition (little soil covers).         Arms and the Covenant

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd.,, [1938]. Speeches... Compiled by Randolph S. Churchill. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Frontispiece portrait. Spine evenly faded. First edition, only printing. An important collection of Churchill's speeches, 1928-38, warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany. A contemporary review in the journal of the Royal Institute for International Affairs remarked that "apart from their literary graces" Churchill's speeches were remarkable because of "the restraint of their language" in view of the "blunders and inaccuracies" of the Government and for his technical mastery, "There seems to be nothing from Naval Strategy to the jigs and tools in an aircraft factory... on which Mr. Churchill is not an expert."

        Great Contemporaries

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1938. First revised and expanded edition. Hardcover. This is the British first revised and expanded edition, first printing, in dust jacket. Originally published in 1937, Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals some of his own character and perspective. This first revised edition, published in 1938 soon after the first edition of 1937, added four new essays (Fisher, Parnell, Baden-Powell, and - of great interest - Roosevelt). While some of the people about whom Churchill wrote have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. This is as fascinating a read today as when first published. As is the case with the first edition, first printing, the dust jacket for the 1938 revised edition is both scarce and sought. This British first revised edition, first printing, is a very clean, near fine copy in dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt. We note only trivial wear to extremities and a slight scuff to the spine corresponding to a closed tear in the dust jacket. The contents remain bright with no spotting. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponds to the dust jacket flaps and confirms what the superior binding already tells us - that this copy has spent its life jacketed. A single inked gift inscription on the first free endpaper is dated "January 1939" which is just two months after publication. The dust jacket is unclipped and substantially complete, but with considerable wear and wrinkling to the top inch of the front face, irregular loss at the spine head to a maximum depth of .75 inch at the upper hinges, and a .75 inch closed tear at the spine center with a bit of associated wrinkling. Despite these faults, the distinctive front face portrait is bright and clean and spine presentation is quite respectable. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
