1938. LISSITZKY, El. URSS en Construction. Number devoted to the Far East Territories. 21st Year Number 5-6. 64 pp. and two inserts. Folio, bound in original wrappers and preserved in dark grey cloth box. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1938. |~||~||~||~| A fine copy of one of the rare issues by Lissitzky of this landmark periodical, this issue being devoted to the Soviet Far East. As Martin Parr says, "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitzky, Rodchenko and others -- the elaborate photomontages, innovative photography, fold-out pages, transparent overlays and so on -- were developed in URSS en Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century." It was published in Russian, French, English, and German. This is the French version. In fine condition. Parr and Badger, The Photobook I, 148-149.

        American Photographs

New York: Museum of Modern Art. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Evans's masterpiece, "at the top of the pantheon" of American photobooks. "American Photographs holds a well-deserved place at the top of the pantheon, and should be studied assiduously by any photographer attempting the tricky business of compiling a coherent photobook. It is a complex, elliptical, hugely ambitious work, exemplifying all the qualities that Evans demanded from serious photography... "It constitutes a document of 1930s America so persuasive that John Szarkowski has remarked: 'It is difficult to know now with certainty whether Walker Evans recorded the America of his youth, or invented it... American Photographs remains a great work of art, for it showed us all -- including the photographer himself -- just what might be accomplished by the photobook" (Parr and Badger, The Photobook, Vol. I.). Roth 101. New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1938. Quarto, original black cloth with paper spine label, original dust jacket. With errata slip; without the extremely rare belly-band. Book fine, dust jacket with mild toning (usual with this jacket), a tiny bit of edgewear, and small spot of discoloration at base of front panel. An exceptionally good copy of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition.

Typed letter signed to the Austrian conductor, composer and musicologist [Dr.] Kurt List (1913-1970)

. Large octavo, 240 x 153 mm. 2 pp. Boston, November 7, 1938. On letterhead of the Fritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston. In German (with translation). Together with typed envelope addressed to List in New York. A long and important letter, written in response both to List's article "Political Art-Notes on Krenek's Karl V" published in the journal "Modern Music," Vol. 15 no. 4 (1938) and to a letter written by List to Krenek on November 5th. The letter opens with a discussion of conversations and correspondence with Dr. [Hans] Heinsheimer (1900-1993), a fellow Austrian who had secured a position with Boosey & Hawkes in New York, and Mina Lederman (1896-1995), editor of "Modern Music" concerning the article. Krenek is not as irritated by List's opinions as by the timing of their publication. He has only just made his way to the United States, having entered the country on August 29th from Canada. "... I could not regard such an article as a friendly welcome of my immigration to this country, which I had just accomplished with considerable difficulty." Krenek states that although it is "very friendly" of List to "put such great hopes in my further development... the hopes harbored by you will not quite make the same impression on the readers of Modern Music as will the witty remarks on the weaknesses of my opera... After all, any new immigrant arrives without authority... The memory of a completely unprepared American reader will hardly retain anything except that I have treated the history of Charles V in a manner equally unoriginal and ridiculous, in the style of the "Threepenny Opera"... I have struck a more radical note just since Karl V that... should find your favor. Thus, I can only assume that your disappointment was related to my political stance." Krenek closes by saying that he feels that List's opinion will probably not seriously affect his reputation and acknowledges that it is unlikely that a performance of Karl V will take place in the U.S. Somewhat worn and soiled; creased at folds. Envelope quite worn and soiled.. The present letter provides considerable insight into the composer's state of mind very shortly after his arrival to his newly-adopted home.

Bedtime Stories - February, 1938 Issue. Peter Driben Cover. Vintage Pin-up

D.M. Publishing Co. Inc., Dover, DE 1938 - Dover, DE: D.M. Publishing Co., Inc., 1938. First edition. February, 1938 issue of "Bedtime Stories". Cover art by Peter Driben, interior art largely uncredited except for cartoons by R.C. Dell. Nude photographs; over 18 sale only. Illustrated wraps, 10" x 7", 64 pp. Bright and very well preserved. A few small spots of soil toward top of cover (see scan), light soil shadow on rear cover, otherwise really not much to point out for flaws. An exceptional example of the early pin-up / girlie pulp genre. Very good plus, maybe a bit better. Graced by a rare early Peter Driben cover, this is a scarce issue of a scarce title in a scarce genre, and is remarkably well-preserved. Unlike its sister publications of the era, the nude photographs in Bedtime Stories were not all in one central section; herein, they are scattered throughout, soft by current standards, as is the erotic fiction, somewhat off-clor jokes, and cartoons. Except for Dell's cartoons, the interior art accompanying stories and humor is uncredited, but often really rather well done, with art deco or flapper-esque appeal. Stories - almost certainly by pseudonymic authors, except for the notable Robert Leslie Bellem - include: "One Last Fling" (Mason Johns); "Beauty's Bait" (Paul Terry); "Hero By Proxy" (Claire Kennedy); "New Love For Connie" (Tome Kane); "Man Wanted!" (Don King); "Hollywood Madness" (Robert Leslie Bellem); "Birthday Present!" (Otto Nelson); "Suzanne's Dilemma" (Grace Bennett); and "He Got His Story!" (Cliff Carruth). Classic example of the genre. - Jeff Harvey L100 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Nederlandsche 1938 - Leiden, 1938, 1st, Nederlandsche . Pict wraps, 7x10, 49p, no dw, as issued. This introduction for children to the services of the Dutch Ministry of Post and Telegraph is a most wonderful example of an educational text. Zwart was a member of De Stijl, a photographer and typographer. The subject matter is completely modern homage to technology. Even the use of photographs for montage was relatively new at the time. The majority of books were still locked in the Jugenstil manner, but here was something more like the modern advertising art advocated by the Bauhaus. That the subject served an educational purpose, makes the experiment all the more interesting. Not ex-library, no internal marks, clean and tight [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Ammunition Manufacturing Report No. 23. Construction Progress … First Report

Nanping, Manchukuo: Kwantung Army, Showa 13, January-October , 1938. [in Japanese.] Landscape folio (268 × 335 mm). Contemporary black leather-grained, embossed cloth album with cord-tie at spine, hand lettered paper title and date label mounted on front cover. Tipped in at the beginning are 5 leaves of ruled ledger paper with a detailed manuscript index, page numbers lettered in red, followed by 30 leaves, mostly of thick black card stock, with a few of lighter black paper interposed, with 323 mounted original silver-gelatin photos (115 × 153 mm), many mounted on rice-paper hinges as sequential overlays to show the progress of construction work, some of these have become detached; almost all have neatly calligraphic captions in Japanese on the page, often there are inked annotations, and/or date stamps in margins of images themselves, or on verso of the hinge-mounted photos; 62 of the photos are mounted side by side, or joined together to form double-width panoramic images. Loosely inserted schedule for the Officers for the No. 9 Buntan [Division] with 18 officers and 23 NCOs overseeing the construction for the Artillery, also a small commemorative booklet dated 1931 for Japanese Navy, with a few pencil annotations and sketchy diagrams. Slightly rubbed with some more significant edgewear, one leaf neatly cut in half - evidently purposely, ?to use as reference - both parts present and complete, a few photos a little dog-eared, some detached with occasional minor creasing, but remains very good. An historically significant and fascinating album chronicling the progress of the construction of factories at Ningpo near Fuzhou for the manufacture, mixing, drying, and separation of smokeless yellow and brown gunpowder for the Imperial Japanese Kwantung Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Following their stunning victory in the Russo-Japanese War, Japan obtained control of the Kwantung Leased Area in the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria which was occupied by the Kwantung Garrison, in 1919 the Kwantung Army. A hotbed of the aggressive expansionist nationalist Imperial Way Faction, the Kwantung Army was implicated in a number of attempted coup d'états in Japan, and the manipulation of events in Manchuria, culminating in the Mukden Incident and invasion of Manchuria in 1931. Presented with a fait accompli on this scale, the Japanese Government had little choice but to back up the KA, providing reinforcements for the Pacification of Manchuria, resulting in the creation of the Japanese province of Manchukuo under the puppet emperor Puyi, but in fact ruled over by the local army commander. As over 150,000 Japanese settlers surged into Manchuria during the 1930s, the Kwantung Army expanded its sphere of operations and by the time of World War II would constitute a force of close to a million and a half men. This remarkable album documents Japanese efforts immensely to increase their munitions production for the Sino-Japanese War (1937-45). The project documented here was a vital part of the second five-year plan drawing on the vast mineral resources of the region. The photographs are without exception clear and sharp, evidently the work of a trained photographer, who has shot the various buildings from different directions, angles and heights - employing the water-tower to offer an over-view - and has carefully docketed, captioned, and mounted the images in the album in such ways as to produce a comprehensive view of development across the site, over time, a sort of improvised time-lapse montage. Beginning in February, 1938, the photos depict the stages of construction of the bleaching factory, the powder pellet factories, warehouses, military barracks, the drying factories, fuse construction and storage facilities, the mortar shell assembly area, as well as the mixing factory with the powder mixing vats. The album follows the progress of the development from the pouring of the foundations, through the erection of the scaffolding, and the specific construction methods of the full range of brick, concrete, and timber buildings, even down to the creation of the protective earthen berms around the facilities, especially the drying factories and storage warehouses. Other parts of the facility shown are the workers' dining hall, the silk bag manufacturing plant, powder storage areas, fire station, the power substation, hospital, and the front gate of the main factory, guarded by Japanese soldiers and a military police station. The rapid development of this installation at Ningpo is indicative of the scope of Japan's expansionist ambitions, and of the efficiency of her military-industrial complex. The album represents an invaluable historical resource, visually compelling, heavily documented, and comprehensively indexed to this pivotal point in Asian, and in world history, as this local conflict folded into that which was to envelop the whole globe.
