Origineel handschrift van de bundel Kaleidoscoop.

Schoolschrift. 20,8 x 16,5 cm. Vijfenzestig bladen.

NY: Stokes, (1938) - SIGNED & INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Water-stained boards on a good square copy happily without any of the foxing usually seen on this elusive title. Better than very good dust jacket is clipped (though not the price), shows only moderate creasing an d just three relatively minor chips: two to spine extremities and one to lower rear panel. Book is from library of famed multi-millionaire bibliophile Edward T. (Ned) Guymon, intimate of Dannay & Lee, Hammett, Chandler, Christie, etc., (and the many whom Fred Dannay credits as being his guide & predecessor). On the front pastedown is Guymon's own weirdly fascinating bookplate. Book is a PRESENTATION COPY from Fred Dannay to Guymon's secretary Gertrude Larson, and bears this inscription penned in the bold cursive hand of Dannay: "To / Ned Guymon's / secretary -- / Gertrude Larson -- / with the best wishes / of the author / "Ellery Queen"." A highly fascinating association copy. This is also an advance copy which has the slip laid in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Original pen-and-ink drawing, "Fascism"

1938. Grunbaum (1909-2009) was born in Seattle and graduated with a degree in fine arts from the University of Washington. After a brief engagement as a WPA art instructor, he moved to New York City, where he participated in numerous exhibitions of politically-engaged art throughout the Thirties and Forties, as well as serving on the editorial board of the left-wing art journal Art Front. His later career was spent as an art director for various mainstream publications, including The New Republic and Scientific American, but he continued to exhibit work at least through the 1960's. He experimented with both social-realist and surrealist techniques, and the current work clearly draws inspiration from both. A few of the highlights have been touched up with white ink, as if for publication, but we have not discovered a published example of this drawing. Pen-and-ink on heavy composition paper, sheet size 17-1/2" x 22" (ca 45cm x 56cm), with ca. 2" margins on all sides. Slight mat burn; small tear into lower edge (far from image); light soil, still fine and bright. Titled and signed in pencil below image area; also signed and dated in ink, lower right. A large, expertly-rendered composition.

        JEAN DUFY. Othon Friesz. als.

Plaza Hotel / Perls Galleries, n.d. 1938., New York - 4 page, 5" x 8 3/4" folded exhibition promotional catalogue printed in black & white on stiff semi-gloss paper stock. With the original Othon Friesz autograph manuscript used as text for the introduction of the catalogue of the Jean Dufy exhibition held at the Perls Galleries. Written in French on The Plaza Hotel, New York, stationery, 1938, 1 page, about 6 by 8 inches, in very good plus condition. The manuscript in Friesz's hand is not signed but credited in the catalogue in which the introduction by Friesz has been translated into English. Friesz writes: "An Exhibition of Jean Dufy's works coincides with my sojourn in New York. I am happy to see the sparkling and witty canvases of our "little" Jean so fortunately placed here. It has been said too often, and erroneously, that he imitates his big brother Raoul. Surely, he directly stems from him. He absorbed the color technique of his elder brother, as well as the expressive and spontaneous form of statement which he uses with savor to express his very personal emotions. But to see him as any servile imitation of Raoul Dufy would be a serious blunder. In the case of brothers so closely united within their family and their lives - was not Jean the best draftsman in his brother' s atelier? - it would be almost strange that they should not resemble each other. Instead of deploring the resemblances, one should rather see in the case of the brothers Dufy a situation paralleling that of the brothers Le Nain". Othon Friesz was one the most important painters at the start of the twentieth century; one of the founders & leading painters of Fauvism from Le Havre, along with George Braque & Raoul Dufy. During his early years of painting before & in the Fauve style, he often painted & exhibited with Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Henri Manguin, Jean Puy, Andre Derain, Maurice Vlaminck and others. He remained a life long friend of Raoul Dufy, both of whom were born & learned art in Le Havre. A lovely item. Original artist autograph manuscripts like Friesz are extremely scarce & seldom come on the market. This one is enhanced because it discusses one great artist's impressions of another. [Some glue mounting remains on the verso of the catalogue otherwise fine] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Octavo. 260pp. A cornerstone of prose fiction & long denied publication in the US until Lawrence gained recognition for his masterwork " .Quartet ." This is a fine copy showing very light use of what has become a Durrell rarity. Stiff clear Mylar protective outer wrapper. Neat collector's bookplate of editor, [collector], Morley Kennerley. "The books I own are impeccable. The fine binding lie along the wall in the firelight, snoozing softly in richness." - Lawrence Durrell, The Black Book. Collectible copies of this title are few & far between.         My Ears Are Bent

New York: Sheridan House. (1938). First. First edition. Previous owner's neat gift inscription, rear endpaper wrinkled, a very good or better copy in a very good example of the rare dustwrapper with small chips at the crown and rear panel, some rubbing, tears, and other light wear. The author's exceptionally rare first book, a collection of short pieces from his days as a reporter for the New York World-Telegram, the New York Herald Tribune and The New Yorker. Anecdotally it has been said that Mitchell would not allow this book to be reprinted in his lifetime because of some racial characterizations that are now considered inappropriate. This may be the case but Mitchell's writing, while never precious, could hardly be considered insensitive. We have seen only a handful of jacketed copies in thirty years of searching. .
