[African-American woman playing a guitar, sitting with a child beside her on the porch of a weathered farm shack.]

1938. Black and white lithograph, 12 x 8 3/4 inches on linen-weave unwatermarked paper, approximately 14 x 11 inches. Signed in the stone ?"J.V.?" and in pencil along the lower edge of the image ?"Joseph P. Vorst 1938?" where it is also numbered in pencil ?"23?-28?". Joseph Vorst was born in Essen, Germany, and studied art there before coming to the United States in 1930. Settling in the St. Louis area, he studied with, became a friend of, and was much influenced by Thomas Hart Benton. This very strong image decidedly shares the character of Benton?'s expressionist style and Depression-Era subject matter. Besides producing a small body of print work, Vorst painted murals in the WPA program, did portraits and other painting, published illustrations in Esquire, and taught art at Jefferson College in St. Louis. Glazed and framed. A very good copy of the print.

[Photograph]: Original Portrait Photograph of Lotte Lenya

Sepia-toned photograph of Lotte Lenya laying on a floor face up wearing a sweater and partially covered with a white sheet. Image matted to 7" x 8.75", in glazed and silvered 11.75" x 13.5" wood frame. The back of the frame is cut away to reveal the rear of the photo which has the stamp of fashion photographer George Platt Lynes along with a "Harper's Bazaar" stamp dated in pencil for the article "Visitors" in the May, 1938 issue, as well as an unsigned caption handwritten by Glenway Wescott: "Lotte Lenya told us that her worst worry & vexation had always been her NOT looking like Joan Crawford; and in this photograph George did his best for her. I remember his finding that this device of recumbency often helped to relax very self-conscious subjects. He talked Gide into it, on the seventeenth-century parquet of Baba's house in the rue de Vaugirard - who afterward complained of the discomfort and the result, the congested expression." Near fine. .

FAIRCHILDS-EVANSVILLE-E. KY. 1938-1941 [Cover Title] [Original Photo Album]

Fairchilds, KY and Evansville, [IN], [ca. 1938-1941]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong folio album. Original (likely homemade) wooden covers with screw binding and brass hinges - measuring approximately 15.25" x 12". Containing 29 black paper leaves with 252 black and white, primarily snapshot photographs glue-mounted both recto and verso. Small title photograph to front cover torn, light handling wear to album exterior. A handful of images apparently perished. Otherwise about near fine throughout. A classic album of Americana with clear and sharp domestic, community, occupational and railroad themed images. Compiled by the Fairchilds family of Evansville, IN between 1938 and 1941, the patriarch appears to have worked in gas and oil exploration in and around the western Kentucky / southern Indiana / southern Illinois regions. Many named images of the men Fairchilds worked alongside as well as facilities located in Keensburg, IL, Centralia, IL, Cloverport, KY, and Edgar County, IL. A wonderful series includes approximately 20 interior and exterior views of a new family home located on Plaza Dr. in Evansville, and dozens of shots show downtown Evansville, its storefronts, signage, holiday festivities, and decorations. Several railroad photos and a handful from a trip to Washington, D.C. are also included. All images carefully framed with a strong aesthetic eye. Particularly striking are the many close-up portraits throughout rendered with an intimacy not typically seen in similar albums. An uncommonly well-composed and -constructed album of middle class life in the southern midwest at the tail-end of The Depression, just before the beginning of U.S. involvement in WWII.

GRENZGAU SAARPLFAZ. ARBEIT UND FROHSINN. Saar-Palatinate- Work and Happiness.

Raumbild, Südwestdeutsche Verlagsansatalt, Neustadt an der W 1938 - Quarto. Original Paper Covered Boards with Gilt Tiltes. Presentation Label Pasted to FEP. 64pp. Text. 100 Original Stereoview Photographs by Heinrich Hoffmann with Stereoviewer. A Fine Copy. Produced as propaganda to celebrate the return of The SAARLAND. "In 1920 the Saargebiet was occupied by Britain and France under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. The occupied area included portions of the Prussian Rhine Province and the Bavarian Rhenish Palatinate. In practice the region was administered by France. In 1920 this was formalized by a 15-year League of Nations mandate. A postage stamp from the French occupation of Saarland (Sarre in French) In 1933, a considerable number of communists and other political opponents of National Socialism fled to the Saar, as it was the only part of Germany that remained outside national administration following the First World War. As a result, anti-Nazi groups agitated for the Saarland to remain under French administration. However, with most of the population being ethnically German, such views were considered suspect or even treasonable, and therefore found little support. When the original 15-year term was over, a plebiscite was held in the territory on 13 January 1935: 90.8% of those voting favored rejoining Germany." [Attributes: First Edition]

        Pervaya Konnaya

1938. |~|IN FAVOR TODAY…OUT OF FAVOR TOMORROW RODCHENKO, Alexander and Varvara STEPANOVA. Pervaya Konnaya. Russian text by O. L. Leonidov, printed in red and black throughout. [284] pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs, reproductions of Russian drawings and paintings, caricatures, maps, newspaper clippings, etc. Folio, 350 x 305 mm, bound in original publisher's illustrated green cloth with red lettering. Moscow: Ogiz Izogiz, 1938. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Edition of this important propaganda photobook about the First Cavalry. Designed by Rodchenko and Stepanova, their fascinating book provides unique insight into Soviet history shortly after the October Revolution. "One of the most sumptuous of Soviet propaganda books, Pervaya Konnaya, like so many, uses not only photographs (some of them by Rodchenko himself), but also paintings, drawings and various kinds of ephemera to tell the story of the brave Cossack cavalry brigades who helped turn the tide in the vicious war. The book is large in scale and Rodchenko and Stepanova have resisted the temptation to complicate matters. They have generally used the pictures one to a page to gain maximum impact" (Parr and Badger p. 170). Heavily censored with blacked-out images of officers fallen out of favor with Moscow; no two copies survive alike. This copy has four more pages than the copies in the British Library and The New York Public Library, and 49 more pages than the Getty copy. Slight soiling to covers, and wear to head and foot of spine. PROVENANCE: Carl Kempf, the publisher of Soviet Russia Pictorial, with his ownership stamp (twice). Parr and Badger, The Photobook I, 170-171.

Paul Nash. A hand-written letter to Cecily Grey dated 1938.

Self-published., Hampstead. 1938 - A hand written letter in black ink on unheaded folded grey notepaper addressed: 3 Eldon Road, Hampstead, NW35 to Cicely Grey: February 1938 My dear Cicely, please come and see us, we'd love to see you again and it will reassure us both. We thought you had abandoned us as we never heard from you again. I was staying with Tom and Gillian in October and we used to talk of you. They are steadily making a nice fat living out of The Blue Pool. I made a drawing of it and we are planning to produce a sort of guide to the Pool. Of course we should love to come and sample your cook and sniff the tulips from the country. With our best greetings Paul. With an envelope in adifferent hand. Nash stayed with the Barnards, the owners of the Blue Pool, at Furzebrook House in 1937 and talked of producing a guide for the Blue Pool for which he would supply illustrations. Provenance: the Barnard family. Pennie Denton. Paul Nash and the Blue Pool. Dorset Life, May 2013. "The visitors’ book from Furzebrook House, near Wareham, records that Paul Nash stayed there from 17 to 24 September 1937. Seven-year-old Tom Barnard junior was told that the famous artist needed to sleep with seven pillows, because of his asthma. In the morning he crept to the door dividing the nursery wing from his parents’ quarters and peeped through, hoping, in vain as it turned out, that the visitor’s bedroom door might be open and he might catch a glimpse of Mr Nash on his seven pillows.Tom does not know how Paul Nash first got to know his parents, Tom and Gillian Barnard, but on 9 March 1935, a few days after the Barnards had moved into Furzebrook House, Paul and his wife, Margaret, were brought to tea by a Mr West, who may have had a part in the negotiations to buy the house. Just why these visitors were invited when the family were in the process of moving in is unclear but perhaps Nash, who was then living in Swanage and busy researching his Shell Guide to Dorset, was anxious to see the Blue Pool, a beauty spot on the Furzebrook estate often sought out by artists. The Barnards had lived for many years in South Africa where Tom Barnard was Director of the School of African Life and Languages at Cape Town University. In 1934 the family returned to England and began to look for somewhere to live. Furzebrook House seemed attractive, with its 200 acres of land including a large garden, heathland, woodland, eight cottages and a small farm. They decided to buy it but as the house had not been lived in for some time, it needed a good deal of work before they could move in.The Furzebrook estate had been owned and managed by Leonard Gaskell Pike, the last of the generations of Pikes who had mined the land for ball clay. Joseph Pike, a clay merchant from Devon, had started mining in the area in 1760 and in 1762 his son, William, drew up a contract with Josiah Wedgwood for 1100 tons of clay a year. In 1866 the Pikes opened a railway line from Furzebrook to Ridge Wharf and a steam train replaced the donkeys and carts that had transported the clay across the heath. From Ridge, barges took the clay to Poole for onward shipment to the Mersey ports, to Bristol and, by canal, to Staffordshire. When the Barnards bought the estate, some of the clay workings had been filled in but several large ponds, including the famous Blue Pool, remained. The Blue Pool had originally been dug in the mid-19th century but was already disused when Augustus John and his friends came to paint there in 1910. The pool’s main attraction was its startling turquoise water, which was caused by the diffraction of light from minute clay particles in the lake. People were turning up at all times and without permission to gaze in wonder at the pool and Tom Barnard hit on the idea of turning the lake and its surroundings into a visitor attraction. He fenced in about 25 acres around the pool, turned one of his fields into a car park, built an attractive teahouse and charged an entrance fee. Gillian Barnard laid the first bri [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Homage to Catalonia

London: Secker and Warburg,, 1938. Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Price-clipped jacket with purchase inscription at head of back panel, some loss at extremities of spine and front flap. First edition, first impression, 1,500 copies were printed, those surviving in the dust jacket are very scarce. "When he finished his book [The Road to Wigan Pier] in December, Orwell went to Spain to fight for the republic. 'Someone has to kill fascists,' he is alleged to have said. Impatient to be there, he made his own way to Barcelona and joined the POUM militia ('Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista') on the Aragon front. The POUM was an independent Marxist movement, hated by the Stalinists and in dispute with the Trotskyites. Because he was on a quiet section of the front he tried to transfer to the communist-dominated International Brigades around Madrid, but he became involved in the May troubles in Barcelona. This attempt by the communists to purge the POUM and the Catalan anarchists made him bitterly anti-communist. Upon returning to the front, he was badly wounded in the neck, and was then hunted by the communists while still convalescent. With the help of his wife, Eileen, who had come to Barcelona to work for the Independent Labour Party (ILP), he escaped from Spain at the end of June 1937. Orwell went back to Wallington and wrote Homage to Catalonia, a supreme description of trench life (lice and boredom), but also a trenchant and detailed exposure of how the communists risked the whole republican cause in their lust for power and in their zeal to suppress all other socialists. Gollancz refused to publish it, so Frederick Warburg, who was known as the Trotskyite publisher simply because he took left-wing books that were critical of Stalin, brought out the book in April 1938. Orwell now saw himself as an anti-communist revolutionary socialist; he joined the ILP, and he attended and spoke at their summer schools. Homage to Catalonia was much abused and much defended. Its literary merits were hardly noticed, and it sold few copies. Some now think of it as Orwell's finest achievement, and nearly all critics see it as his great stylistic breakthrough: he became the serious writer with the terse, easy, vivid colloquial style" (Bernard Crick in ODNB).
