        Rebecca

London: Victor Gollancz Limited, 1938 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original pale yellow dust jacket, lettered and ruled in black and magenta. Book near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor spotting to the page edges and endpapers, otherwise bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and creasing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine and panel edges, short closed tears to the spine ends, a hint of soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. An excellent copy in the extremely fragile dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Rebecca is a suspenseful novel that opens with the iconic line, "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again," which immediately establishes the dream-like, haunting quality of both the novel and its main setting. The plot is narrated by the second Mrs. de Winters, the new wife of wealthy widower Maxim de Winters, who used to live at his country estate Manderley with his first wife, Rebecca. Throughout the novel, the narrator is tormented by Rebecca's former nursemaid, the sinister Mrs. Danvers, who glorifies her former mistress and attempts to break up the newlywed de Winters. However, "To suggest the story in brief compass is impossible. The reader must experience the atmosphere of impending disaster, the exquisite love story with its emotion heightened by drama, the surprises, the superb moment of melodrama." Rebecca, du Maurier's most famous novel, was adapted into the notable 1940 film by Alfred Hitchcock, whose signature style also hinged on a suspenseful development that outshone the plot itself. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        MASKEE: A SHANGHAI SKETCHBOOK

[Shanghai 1938?, Schiff]. Red silk accordion folded album. 21 hand colored charming sketches [pages], 19.5 x 27 cm.very. clean, bright copy, versos blank as issued. FIRST EDITION. AUTHOR'S HAND-COLORED & SIGNED COPY S C A R C E. Austrian-Jewish artist Schiff (1908-1968) was a keen observer of the Chinese spirit, showing the more fascinating visual insights to Shanghai life. He moved to Shanghai in 1930 after an invite to visit from a cousin and lived there for 17 years, becoming known as one of the city's great cartoonists between the two world wars. * Schiff's importance lies, first of all, in the fact he depicted indelible characters that manifest what it meant to dwell in Shanghai, which was opening itself to the outside world. "He manipulates his works as a form of attack. Socially marginalized groups, such as prostitutes, 'taxi-girls' and beggars, are all subjects under his scrutiny." ** Gerd Kaminski, author of a chronicle and geographical study of the artist, described the opus of Schiff as extensive, ascertaining that cartooning was the genre that prodded him into telling stories from the point of view of a spectator on the street. * "Schiff's opus goes beyond cartoons and illustrations for newspapers. Artistically, he was equally excellent in landscape and portrait oil paintings, gouache and watercolor works," Kaminski said. * "Schiff, from the very beginning of his residency in China, had already developed sharp eyes -not only in face-reading Chinese physiognomy, but also the social realities in which Chinese and foreigners were being subjected to." * TITLES TO HIS SKETCHES: Miss Shanghai: "Me no worry-me no care ! Me go marry millionaire ! If he die me no cry ! Me go marry other guy !!" *** Shows how Occidentals inter-related with the Chinese girls, Shanghai Party time English style, "Having a Ripping Time," American sailors caress and dance with their Chinese girls in slinky Cheongsams, split up to their hips. The Russian blond blue-eyed prostitutes compete with their Chinese sisters for the Yankee dollar, "sing-song girls" bar girls, the scene as it was...during the Roaring 1930's in Shanghai. * Schiff arrived from Austria in Shanghai in 1930 when he was 22 years old, and lived there until 1947. His charming cartoons captured the foreign community's interest and many were also published in local newspapers and journals such as the China Journal as well as the North China Daily News. He also illustrated several books on China, a suite of Shanghai postcards, and was attributed to decorating the walls of the Cercle Sportif Français and other clubs. * The tile "MASKEE" is a very old China coast Pidgin English corruption of the Portuguese word meaning "Never Mind." This and other Pidgin English was commonly used by both Chinese and foreigners along the treaty coastal cities on China coast. *** This work was black-outline printed, then each page was embellished with hand-coloring by the author who also signed the title page. * BINDING: The work was bound in various colors of silk [red, maroon, green, blue], with brocade designs, such as bamboo, or the dragon. There may have been other variant colors, we do not place any special value on any particular color. *** EDITION: The book was printed in a two editions, all editions were color tinted by the author: a. "Limited Edition" and often signed and numbered on the last page, and signed on the first pabe by Schiff. There is no information as to the number of signed copies. * b. "Signed edition." The book is signed on the first page by Schiff. *** BIBLIOGRAPHICAL DATA: There is no solid bibliographical resource that has listed the edition so one does not know exactly what the Limited Edition was. The contents remains the same regardless of "Edition." * Please inquire with us for other books illustrated by this author. * REFERENCES: A collection of his works was published in Austria in 1985 under the name "China gemalt -Chinesische Zeitgeschichte in Bildern Friedrich Schiff." * Color scans can be sent by email.         Bauhaus 1919?1928.

Gelenke min. stockfleckig, Rücken im Fuss mit Spuren einer entfernten Etikette) mit farb. gepr. (R-) Titel in Schwarz resp. Rot und Schwarz. Erste Ausgabe (Originalausgabe) / Original Edition. Leichtere Alters- u. Lagerungs-, wenig eigentliche Gebrauchsspuren. Gesamthaft gutes Exemplar. Deckeltitel: Bauhaus Weimar 1919-25, Dessau 1925-28. - Typography and cover design by Herbert Bayer. - ?It is twenty years since Gropius arrived in Weimar to found the Bauhaus; ten years since he left the transplanted and greatly enlarged institution at Dessau to return to private practice; five years since the Bauhaus was forced to close its doors after a brief rear-guard stand in Berlin. Are this book, then, and the exhibition which supplements it, merely a blated wreath laid upon the tomb of brave events, important in their day but now of primarily historical interest? Emphatically, no! The Bauhaus is not dead; it lives and grows through the men who made it, both teachers and students, through their principles, their philosophies of art and education. It is hard to recall when and how we in America first began to hear of the Bauhaus. [.] It may not have been until after the great Bauhaus exhibition of 1923 that reports reached America of a new kind of art school in Germany where famous expressionist painters such as Kandinsky were combining forces with craftsmen and industrial designers under the general direction of the architect Gropius. A little later we began to see some of the Bauhaus books, notably Schlemmer?s amazing volume on the theatre and Moholy-Nagy?s ?Malerei, Photographie, Film? [.] This book on the Bauhaus is published in conjunction with the Museum?s exhibition, ?Bauhaus 1919?28? Like the exhibition it is for the most part limited to the first nine years of the institution, the period during which Gropius was director. For reasons beyond the control of any of the individuals involved, the last five years of the Bauhaus could not be represented. During these five years much excellent work was done and the international reputation of the Bauhaus increased rapidly, but, fortunately for the purposes of this book, the fundamental character of the Bauhaus had already been established under Gropius? leadership. This book is primarily a collection of evidence: photographs, articles and notes done on the field of action, and assembled here with a minimum of retrospective revision. It is divided in two parts: Weimar, 1919?1925, and Dessau, 1925?1928.? (etc., Alfred H. Barr, in: Foreword, p. 7 u. 9). ? Teil I u.a. mit einem Kapitel ?The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus, by Walter Greopius (Weimar 1923)? - Mit: 1. Biographical Notes (von Josef Albers bis Laszlo Moholy-Nagy), 2. Bibliography of Bauhaus Publications (1919?1938, 32 Titel), 3. Index of Illustrations by Artist?s Names (von Anni und Josef Albers bis Werner Zimmermann).         La Bete Humaine (Oversize still photograph from the 1938 film)

Paris: Paris Film, 1938. Vintage oversize black-and-white double weight still photograph from the 1938 film, a strong image of Jean Gabin in full train engineer regalia. Shot by acclaimed portrait photographer Sam Levin, who worked with Renoir on several other productions, including "La Grande Illusion" (1937) and "The Rules of the Game" (1939), and whose early photographs of Brigitte Bardot helped create her image as a "sex kitten." Based on Zola's social realist novel, Renoir's film remains true to the proletarian source material, while grafting on elements of film noir and his own humanist philosophy. One of the director's biggest commercial successes, with a powerful lead performance by Jean Gabin. Remade in the US 16 years later by Fritz Lang as "Human Desire." 11.5 x 12 inches. Near Fine. Criterion 324.

Hoornik, Karel Jonckheere, Cor Klinkenbijl, Louis Th. Lehmann, A. Marja, Adriaan Morriën, F.C.

Many regard McAlmon's memoirs of Paris between the wars as the most perspicacious and revealing. His life there was famously troubled but nothing if not "in the heart of things". Married as no more than a beard to Bryer - the daughter of one of the richest men in England - McAlmon, a mediocre writer at best, established a short-lived but important publishing house, Contact Editions, which would print the work of Hemingway, Joyce, Stein, H.         Out Of Africa.

New York: Random House, 1938. First American edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in bright near fine dust jacket. An exceptional example. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Basis for the film bearing the same name, directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards.

1938 - ABBOTT, Berenice. Photograph. Glass Brick and Brownstone Fronts. No place, circa 1940. Gelatin silver print (image measures 7-1/2 by 9 inches), mounted and matted (total measures 13 by 14-1/2 inches), caption on mount. $2000.Early gelatin silver print of a key 1938 photograph by Berenice Abbott, one of the select images chosen for her masterwork, Changing New York (1939), capturing the striking contrasts of style in an ever-evolving and restless Manhattan though Abbott’s image of the two buildings on East 48th Streetâ€"the boldly remodeled office of modernist architect William Lescase and a neighboring brownstoneâ€"captioned below the image on print mount, handsomely mounted and matted. This early gelatin silver print of Abbott’s photograph of two buildings on Manhattan’s East 48th Street, titled “Glass Brick and Brownstone Fronts,” is one of the key images featured in her classic work, Changing New York (1939), funded by the Federal Art Project (FAP). This striking image “not only fulfills Abbott’s criterion for the historical importance of the documentary mode, but also demonstrates its power as a medium of personal expression” (Parr & Badger I:141), providing “a distinctive interpretation of New York as well as a priceless document thereof” (Icons of Photography, 104). Abbott took this photograph on February 1, 1938, an image affirming that her “vision of this historically rich part of Manhattan extended beyond preconceived ideas of New York as the archetypal modern city.” She focuses on the contrast between the “iconoclastic office of modernist architect William Lescaze” and a neighboring brownstone. Both townhouses, built in the 1860s, were part of a group “that was uniformly remodeled in 1920 with a common garden as Turtle Bay Gardens. In 1934 Lescaze brazenly injected into this ensemble an example of the International Style, complete with white stucco, glass brick, horizontal windows and rooftop garden.” Near the time of the book’s publication, Abbott made a set of prints for the Museum of the City of New York, a second set for the Index of American Design and a partial set for the New York State Museum in Albany. Those prints (not this), each signed in pencil on the mount front, were printed by Abbott. When Abbott left the FAP in 1939, the disposition of the negatives was unresolved; despite her protests “the FAP continued to issue prints until 1943, when the FAP disbanded and sent Abbott’s 700 negatives” to the Museum of the City of New York, where they remain” (Yochelson, Berenice Abbott, 229, 383, 31). An about-fine matted print, evenly brown-toned. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
