Huge archive regarding the Dutch pre-war literary almanac In Aanbouw.

Original correspondence, contributions, editorial notes, photographs and artwork. Approx. 500 A.L.S. and T.L.S. by 140 young Dutch and Flemish authors including Bertus Aafjes, Anna Blaman, Johan Daisne, Bert Decorte, Chr.J. van Geel, Jan d'Haese, Jac. van Hattum, Jacob Hiegentlich, Ed. Hoornik, Karel Jonckheere, Cor Klinkenbijl, Louis Th. Lehmann, A. Marja, Adriaan Morriën, F.C. Terborgh, M. Vasalis, Ab Visser and publishing houses Leopold and Manteau; 150 concepts of letters and submission reviews by K. Lekkerkerker; 40 original photographs and drawings; dozens of proofs, clippings and promotional material; letters and prints about the reprint that was issued to commemorate the 50th birthday of the book. 1938-1946 and 1989.* Fascinating archive of the nicely illustrated almanac that published work of no less than 51 promising young literary authors of 1939 from Holland and Belgium. Composed by K. Lekkerkerker, In Aanbouw (meaning Under Construction) is considered the most important pre-war anthology. The letters by the (mostly male) poets and writers concern their latest work, their bio- and bibliographies (so far) and their portraits. This archive not only consists of full correspondences, but also shows Lekkerkerker's editorial work, his consultations with his Dutch and Flemish publishers, and his efforts to hold In Aanbouw exhibitions in bookstores all over the Low Countries. Some authors, like Lehmann and d'Haese, overload Lekkerkerker with extensive letters, poems and stories. Others are more reserved: the illustrious bibliophile Emile van der Borch van Verwolde immediately refuses to cede a photograph, Belcampo considers himself too old to be included in the almanac, and the diplomat Reijnier Flaes does not wish to be associated with his pseudonym F.C. Terborgh. Much to Lekkerkerker's regret, M. Vasalis only sends a (charming) rejection letter. After the successful launch of In Aanbouw and its talents, some authors continue to correspond with Lekkerkerker about literature and more personal matters. The archive also contains poems and stories that were considered superfluous or unfit for publication: i.a. a satirical sonnet by Chris van Geel Jr. and a short story by Terborgh."U zult het [portret] echter niet krijgen, en ik hoop dat dit U teleurstelt! Mijn werkwijze bestaat uit het imiteren van anderen, dat ik gepubliceerd word is geheel buiten mijn toedoen" (Lehmann, autobiography 1939).Important, multifaceted material from numerous beginners and budding authors - some with a shining future, some soon to be forgotten.

Signed British India 5 Rupees "Short Snorter" Banknote

1938. unbound. Churchill has placed his signature on the back of a British India 5 Rupees Banknote -- the classic 1938 design depicting George VI in profile, P-18a, 3 x 5 inches, multi-colored with the addition of a security watermark. In describing the correct definition of a Short Snorter nobody has summed it up better than Francis Cardinal Spellman: "A Short Snorter is one who has crossed the ocean in an airplane. The certificate of membership in this society consists of a signature(s) on a dollar bill or other paper currency which must be always in a Short Snorter's possession. Upon failure to produce it on demand - he is penalized by being obliged to treat everyone to a short 'snort' that is...a short snort of whiskey." Winston Churchill was very fond of the game and there are many documented recollections of him signing paper money and of entrapping some of his guests into buying several rounds of alcohol. William Manchester, in his acclaimed trilogy, "The Last Lion," describes a trip made by Churchill and General George Marshall: "All on board signed one another's short snorters, these were banknotes carried by those who had made a trans-Atlantic flight, signed by others who had done the same. Anyone who failed to produce his short snorter forfeited a dollar or bought a short snot of liquor. Churchill gamely signed his short snorters as the flying boat made its way North." Most short snorters are in terrible condition from constant handling. They were usually folded in half and placed in the pocket compartment of a wallet - as opposed to placing currency in a bill fold. Two recent Churchill short snorters sold at auction (different houses) were described as "with scotch tape over a portion of signature" and "heavy creases through signature which crosses the fold." These are probably the most common grades encountered. Our signed 5 Rupees banknote is in excellent condition. There are two tiny holes at the top left hand margin -- the handiwork of the individual who stapled the banknote into a scrapbook. The usual fold is present but it is extremely light and does not detract. The signature is sharply written and neat in appearance. The contrast is exceptional because Churchill knew that the best place to sign would be in the white Reserve Bank of India window. British Statesman and twice-elected Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Companeros, which remains unpublished was a lengthy work by Bandini dealing with early California history as experienced by members of his family, primarily his grandfather, aunt and uncle. Chi sono, quanti sono, come si chiamano. Gli Ebrei in Italia. Tutti i cognomi delle famiglie ebraiche

A.R.I.A. casa editrice, Roma 1938 - In 8, pp. 18. JAHRGANG 1938. ADREßBUCH FÜR DEN RAUCHWAREN-HANDEL, DIE FELLVEREDELUNGS- UND PELZWAREN-INDUSTRIE, DAS KÜRSCHNER- UND MÜTZENMACHER-HANDWERK. [ADRESSBUCH]

Leipzig: Kuhwald 1938 - 1st printing of the 1938 edition. October, 1938. Original illustrated wrappers, 12mo (small) , 191 pages, including many, many period ads. Published just one month prior to Kristallnacht, this is a Name and Address Directory of the world’s leading Fur business district, the Brühl, and its counterpart in Berlin, both very heavily Jewish. Divided into 2 sections, one for the Brühl in Leipzig, and the other for Furriers in Berlin. In the 19th and early 20th Century, the "Brühl" had become synonymous with the Leipzig fur and Tobacco trade. It was the name of the large street where the trade was concentrated (also including Nikolai- and Reichs-strasse) . The Brühl reached it’s highest density with 794 shops in 1928. Of these, about 58 percent were Jewish run and owned. In the period 1926-1930, the Brühl controlled about one third of the world market in furs. With the great depression, followed by the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the fur trade went into decline. For political reasons the fascist leadership limited the import quotas for goods from the USSR, such as raw fur. And, of course, increasingly, Jewish merchants in the Brühl were discriminated against and expelled. Many fled to England or the United States, where they established new fur businesses. Following Kristallnacht, which came only 1 month after the publication of this guide in October 1938, it became impossible for Jewish furriers to function. Some of the most famous Jewish fur traders included: Julius (Judel) Ariowitsch (1855-1908) ; Chaim Eitingon (1857-1932) , known as "Fur King from Brühl", founder of the Ez Chaim Synagogue and the Jewish hospital; the Frankel family; the Harmerlin Family; John B. (John [Joel] Berend) Oppenheimer & Company; F. Weiss (1893-1982) ; and Theodor Wolf (1833) . OCLC lists only one holding worldwide (German National Library) . Light wear, occational pencil scribbles, overall Very Good Condition. Quite rare and important. (holo2-125-28) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Valse-caprice pour le Piano. Autograph musical manuscript signed "Ant. Rubinstein." Undated, but ca. 1870

Folio (352 x 265 mm.). Finely bound in full modern green morocco with facsimile of composer's autograph signature to upper and monogrammatic device of Werner-Eberhard Müller to lower, all within decorative gilt border, marbled endpapers. [1] (title, with signature "Ant. Rubinstein"), [2-4] pp. Notated in ink on 16-stave hand-ruled music paper with blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris. With autograph dedication to title: "A Madame la Comtesse Louisa de Mercy & d'Argentau [!Louise de Mercy- Argenteau];" autograph caption to first page of music: "Valse=Caprice;" and tempo indication to upper left corner: "Vivace." Repeats not written out. Engraver's corrections and annotations in pencil to first page of music: "Verlag und Eigenthum v[on] Bartholf Senff Leipzig;" "16620" in blue pencil to title. From the collection of Werner-Eberhard Müller, Leipzig, with "Werner-Eberhard Müller Leipzig 1938" and "Seiner lieben Susanne zugeeignet von ihrem Vater Leipzig 1961" in pencil to verso of front endpaper. Slightly worn and soiled, particularly at upper edge of last leaf; creased at folds; small circular piece of lavender paper glued to title. . "A charming concert waltz with large and dangerous leaps and a memorable tune." Sitsky pp. 134-35 The annotations confirm that the present autograph of the complete work served as the engraver's manuscript for the first edition, published in 1870 by Bartholf Senff in Leipzig (PN 937). The faulty spelling of the dedicatee's name is faithfully preserved in that edition. The copy on IMSLP, uploaded by the Biblioteca Nacional de España, is not a first edition (despite the identical plate number), and has variant readings in the musical text. Rubinstein dedicated the work to Louise Comtesse de Mercy-Argenteau (Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, Comtesse de Mercy-Argenteau, 1837-1890) a Belgian aristocrat of considerable musical erudition; Mercy-Argenteau developed a keen interest in Russian music from about 1880 and became one of its most ardent champions in the West. She was particularly close to César Cui, on whom she wrote a monograph. Her relationship with Anton Rubinstein is unexplored; the present dedication, however, demonstrates that she knew Rubinstein well before her acquaintance with the Russian nationalist composers.

"39 Elsworthy Road NW 3" (d. i. London), 24. Dabei bleibt es also.

Was Du mir vom Auslandsdeutschtum schreibst, ist packend.

FAIRCHILDS-EVANSVILLE-E. KY. 1938-1941 [Cover Title] [Original Photo Album]

Fairchilds, KY and Evansville, [IN], [ca. 1938-1941]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong folio album. Original (likely homemade) wooden covers with screw binding and brass hinges - measuring approximately 15.25" x 12". Containing 29 black paper leaves with 252 black and white, primarily snapshot photographs glue-mounted both recto and verso. Small title photograph to front cover torn, light handling wear to album exterior. A handful of images apparently perished. Otherwise about near fine throughout. A classic album of Americana with clear and sharp domestic, community, occupational and railroad themed images. Compiled by the Fairchilds family of Evansville, IN between 1938 and 1941, the patriarch appears to have worked in gas and oil exploration in and around the western Kentucky / southern Indiana / southern Illinois regions. Many named images of the men Fairchilds worked alongside as well as facilities located in Keensburg, IL, Centralia, IL, Cloverport, KY, and Edgar County, IL. A wonderful series includes approximately 20 interior and exterior views of a new family home located on Plaza Dr. in Evansville, and dozens of shots show downtown Evansville, its storefronts, signage, holiday festivities, and decorations. Several railroad photos and a handful from a trip to Washington, D.C. are also included. All images carefully framed with a strong aesthetic eye. Particularly striking are the many close-up portraits throughout rendered with an intimacy not typically seen in similar albums. An uncommonly well-composed and -constructed album of middle class life in the southern midwest at the tail-end of The Depression, just before the beginning of U.S. involvement in WWII.

        Prelude for War

London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1938, 1938. Crime adventure. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth titled in black to spine and front board, sunning to spine, light fading and edgewear to extremities, strong and bright. In a crisp, strong example of the Thompson dustwrapper, wear to extremities, light marginal creasinga and chipping, closed tear to upper margin of the front panel, creasing to head of spine, trinagle of loss to upper corner of the rear panel, nevertheless a most handsome example of a scarce bit of sainthood. [Berlin, den 22. ?October 1938] [Handstamp:] als bevollmächtigter Vertreter des Herrn Dr. Richard Strauß [Adolph Fürstner]." Binding worn, rubbbed and bumped; upper stained; spine reinforced; endpapers creased. Minor stain to outer edge of title and following two leaves; stain to upper left corner of final leaf. . First Edition. Rare. No. 23 of an unspecified number of copies printed. Trenner 271. Mueller von Asow p. 949. Not in Hirsch or Sonneck. Worldcat locates only three copies in the United States and three copies in European libraries. In 1935 Otto Fürstner (1886-1958), the son of the company's founder, emigrated to England and sold the German share of his company to his long-term deputy, Johannes Oertel (1879-1961) while continuing his old business from London. Oertel continued to use the name of Fürstner; however, due to the change in ownership, many reference works and library catalogues list Oertel as the publisher, without reference to Fürstner. This pacifist work, the first of Gregor's libretti for Strauss, was first performed at the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich on July 24, 1938 under Clemens Krauss. Viorica Ursuleac (Krauss's wife) created the role of Maria. Gregor ranks next to Hofmannsthal in libretto output for Strauss. "Although [he] left important monographs on the history of ViennaÂ’s theatres, on Richard StraussÂ’s operas and on the broad cultural history of theatre and of opera, he is probably best known as the librettist of Richard StraussÂ’s Friedenstag (1938), Daphne (1938) and Die Liebe der Danae (1944). The collaboration began in 1935, after the anti-semitic climate in Nazi Germany had compelled StraussÂ’s librettist Stefan Zweig to break off his fruitful partnership with the composer."
