Photograph Album of CCC Camp Skokie Valley, Glenview Illinois

[Glenview, Illinois: circa 1938 -1941]. An attractive, well-arranged and nicely-preserved album, apparently complete, containing more than 50 original (vintage) photographs of Civilian Conservation Corps activities at Camp Skokie Valley -- presently the site of the Skokie Lagoons in Cook County, Illinois about 20 miles north of Chicago.  A good blend of vernacular images, including occupational scenes (trench-digging, heavy machinery, etc) and views of facilities as well as casual shots of camp life, showing men playing instruments, playing baseball, engaged in card games, and relaxing. Aside from one commercial image -- an aerial view of the camp -- the album is comprised entirely of amateur photographs, probably taken by the compiler of the album. Though the creator is anonymous, a few images are captioned with names and dates, allowing us to date the album to within a year or two of 1941 (in which year the CCC was discontinued due to conscription for the Second World War). The CCC took on the Skokie Lagoons project in 1933 with the goal of reclaiming the large wetlands known as Skokie Marsh, which as early as the 1910s had begun to be encroached upon by the northward expansion of the Chicago suburbs. In what was purportedly the largest single project undertaken by the CCC, engaging more than 2000 men over a period of nearly 9 years, the Corps transformed the marsh into a major recreational area encompassing seven lagoons, four dams, and a system of heavy dykes and diversion ditches. Much of the work (as pictured here) was done by hand with shovels, pickaxes and wheelbarrows.  By 1934 heavy equipment was brought in; after 1941, the work was completed by the WPA. The Skokie Lagoons are still in existence, and mark a popular summer destination for Chicago-area recreationists. Oblong, 7" x 9 ¾".  Light blue flexible faux leather photo album containing 56 silver gelatin prints (49 mounted, 7 laid in) most measuring 4 ½" x 2 ¾", a few larger.  18 leaves, photos mounted rectos only, with three leaves blank.  Album very good with modest wear, mostly at edges; photos and leaves very good or better.

Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail (Signed Ltd )

Berkeley, CA: The Archetype Press, 1938. First edition. Near Fine. The famous early collection of Ansel Adams photographs taken along the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Limited to 500 copies, each signed by the artist, with 50 tipped-in photographic reproductions. A Near Fine copy with minor soiling to the white cloth and a small blue line on the rear board, previous owener's bookplate, otherwise in excellent condition and unusual for such a large book, binding measures nearly 17 inches tall by 13 inches wide. A classic work from one of America's foremost photographers and environmentalists. Adams was famous for pioneering a number of important techniques which helped mark his signature black and white style and was, during his lifetime, "recognized as the foremost landscape photographer on earth." (The Atlantic) "Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail" was compiled as a collection of Adams' work in an attempt to preserve Sequoia and Kings Canyon and have them declared as national parks - which happened two years after publication, in 1940, in part as a result of this book. The collection includes some of his most famous work, such as Half-Dome. John Szarkowski, Director of Photography at MOMA wrote: "Ansel Adams attuned himself more precisely than any photographer before him to a visual understanding of the specific quality of the light that fell on a specific place at a specific moment... This sensibility to the specificity of light was the motive that forced Adams to develop his legendary photographic technique." Adams himself was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980. Near Fine.

This copy has been signed by Gill at the end of his Introduction, and has a typed letter on Pigotts stationery laid in from Gill to prominent New York physician and print collector Herman T. Radin.       Sydney: Privately Published. Printed at the Beacon Press.. Number 159 of a limited edition of 200.. 1938.. 20 colour tipped in plates, 45 pages, cream binding with vellum spine. Some pale browning occasioned by the glue used to adhere the plates. A very nice copy in original slipcase which has been amateurly repaired by tape in three places, 2 cm loss to one edge of the slipcase. A very good bright copy. "Barnett dedicated Hiroshige (1938) to his sister Gladys MacGillycuddy, a diligent amateur artist, who hand-coloured many of the bookplates in his books. This book was an experiment for Barnett as it was a 'hand-set job' which he described to his friend, Percy Watts Rule, as a 'damn nuisance', perhaps due to the size of the book and the 'fearsome' cost, involving type fonts imported from Europe and the small run of 200 copies. Hiroshige is only 45 pages in length and begins with a brief synopsis of Hiroshige' life, leading to a poem penned by Barnett in te metre of 'Hiawatha'. The poem is of a journey through the Edo scenes captured by the artistry of Hiroshige." (From Chatswood to Edo. The Life & Books of P. Neville Barnett - Diane Kraal.) .

London, Heinemann. 1938., 1938. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Publisher's red cloth with titles in gilt to spine, beige-drab endpapers. Internally very clean with just a hint of the usual tanning which can affect the paper. Boards are bright, spine a shade sunned and a little frayed to head and tail. A most presentable copy lacking the ridiculously rare dustwrapper. The chilling tale of teenage mob-leader Pinkie; a masterpiece of psycho-realism, a fascinating study of evil, sin, and the 'appalling strangeness of the mercy of God' withholds easy judgement as a narrative takes us through the moral question of what is simultaneously fascinating and repellent. Spine slightly tanned, lower corners bumped, light foxing to the endpapers, half-title and final blank browned as usual, scatter of foxing to the title page, light toning, a very good copy indeed. First Edition, only printing. An important collection of Churchill's speeches, 1928-38, warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany. A contemporary review in the journal of the Royal Institute for International Affairs remarked that "apart from their literary graces" Churchill's speeches were remarkable because of "the restraint of their language" in view of the "blunders and inaccuracies" of the Government and for his technical mastery, "There seems to be nothing from Naval Strategy to the jigs and tools in an aircraft factory... on which Mr. Churchill is not an expert." An excellent copy.

        Wait Until Spring, Bandini

Stackpole Sons, New York 1938 - 265 Pages. First edition of a first novel. Blue-green cloth with orange spine lettering and embossed title on front board. Slightly cocked spine. No marks or stamps and interior text pages are flawless. Dust jacket $2.50 flap price is unclipped and the top of the spine area and corner is jagged and as much as 3/8 inch is missing. Jacket currently has a vinyl covering. Laid in is a hand-written (1988 and 1991) post card and an envelope/letter both signed by Joyce Fante the author's wife addressed to a San Francisco friend. Her Los Angeles Times 2005 obituary is also laid in. In the little Italian-American home in Colorado are five souls- passionate, Latin souls of poverty stricken people caught in tragedy and superstition. Svevo Bandini is the father's name, and he loves his white saint of a wife, Maria, and he puts his whole heart into the masonry which is his profession; but he yields to the allure of a yellow-haired widow in the town-and the results are devastating. Maria seeks solace from the priest and prays for beauty to hold her Svevo. The oldest son, who hates being an Italian, takes a certain 'pride in his father's heroic escapade-but the conflict in the boy leads finally to a smashing climax for the entire family. Superbly written, here is a tender, virile drama, touched with irony and good comedy, a novel that rushes along an inevitable course with an unmistakable current of literary beauty. This novel is semi-autobiographical. Size: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
