        Arms and the Covenant

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd, 1938. First Edition, only printing. Hardcover. This first edition, only printing has been called "Â…the permanent record of one manÂ’s unceasing struggle in the face of resentment, apathy, and complacency" and "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published." (Frederick Woods). The book contains text from 41 Churchill speeches spanning 25 October 1928 to 24 March 1938. These criticize British foreign policy and warn prophetically of the coming danger that would become the Second World War. The world remembers the resolute war leader to whom the British turned, but it is easy to forget the years leading up to the war which Churchill spent persistent, eloquent, and largely unheeded. The speeches were compiled by Churchill's son, Randolph, who contributed a preface and is credited with compilation. Randolph would do the same for his father's first volume of war speeches, Into Battle, published in an almost unrecognizable world less than three years later. The “Covenant” in the title of Arms and the Covenant refers to the League of Nations Covenant, the instrument that was to maintain peace in the wake of the First World War. As testimony to the book's importance, a copy of the U.S. edition lay on "President Roosevelt's bedside table, with key passages, including an analysis of the president's peace initiative, underscored" (William Manchester's The Last Lion, Volume II, p.305). The British first edition saw only a single printing of 5,000 copies published on 24 June 1938 and of these, perhaps as few as 3,381 were issued in the distinctive pale blue dust jacket. Here is a good plus copy in its original pale blue dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners with virtually no wear, but sunned at the upper and lower spine and top edge corresponding exactly to dust jacket losses. This, coupled with differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps, definitively confirms that this jacket and volume have spent life together. The contents remain clean and entirely free of spotting. We note some age toning to the otherwise clean page edges, customary transfer browning to the half title, fading of the blue topstain, and a single previous owner's name with the wartime date “1941” on the front free endpaper. There is a cosmetic split to the front endpaper gutter that does not impact the integrity of the mull beneath. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price. Primary losses are confined to the spine, with a triangular loss at the spine heel to a depth of 2.25 inches, a 1.5 x .5 inch loss at the spine head. A smaller, roughly .75 x .25 inch loss is found at the upper front panel beside the spine and there are small losses at the front panel corners. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A107.1. Woods/ICS A44(a), Langworth p.191.

        THE STONEWARE MONKEY

Hodder and Stoughton, [1938]., 1938. First edition. Some minor foxing to page fore-edges and to the half-title page, else very good in dust jacket with light professional restoration to the spine ends and flap folds. Two entirely seemingly unrelated murder cases are the basis for this mystery. "Dr. Thorndyke reasoning from certain peculiarities in the stoneware figure of a monkey, finds in it a factor common to the two crimes; and he is thus able to infer that the perpetrator of both is a person not hitherto suspected of either." A nice copy of a difficult title.

        Laughter in the Dark.

New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company,, 1938. Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered and decorated spine, fore-edge untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Front panel of jacket with closed-tear at head, small abrasion to back panel, a few nicks and chips, spine of binding just slightly rolled, tears in blank margin of two leaves (pp. 267-70) where they have been carelessly opened; despite this an excellent copy, the cloth and jacket both bright. Originally serialised in the literary journal Sovremennye Zapiski in 1932 under the Russian title ?????? ???????, the novel was first published in English as Camera Obscura by John Long (London 1936).         While England Slept

New York: G.P. Putnam?'s Sons, 1938. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the precursor to Churchill's great war speeches, a superlative copy of the first U.S. edition, first printing in dust jacket, quite rare in such condition. The British edition was given the politically palatable title "Arms and the Covenant". The U.S. title is a bit more candid. The book contains a collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. The world remembers the resolute war leader to whom the British entrusted their fate, but it is easy to forget the years leading up to the war which Churchill spent persistent, eloquent, and largely unheeded. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this edition "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published". As testimony to the book's importance, a copy of While England Slept lay on "President Roosevelt's bedside table, with key passages, including an analysis of the president's peace initiative, underscored." (William Manchester's The Last Lion, Volume II, p.305). This copy is a rare find thus, fine in a near fine dust jacket. The book itself is a particularly clean example. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, and tight, with sharp corners, bright silver lettering and red banners, and virtually no wear. The contents show no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The red-stained top edge remains uniformly bright. We note modest age-toning to the otherwise clean untrimmed fore edge. The dust jacket retains the original $4.00 front flap and is remarkably bright and clean, with absolutely no color loss to the spine. Shelf presentation is excellent. We note only a hint of fractional loss to the spine head and trivial wear to extremities. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. With the experience gained Byrd prepared himself to become the first to take an aeroplane over the North Pole" (Howgego). Setting out from Hoboken in August 1928, Byrd and his team travelled south and made for the Ross Ice Shelf, where they established base camp (known as "Little America"). After several preliminary reconnaissance missions, Byrd and his companions eventually reached the pole on 29th November 1929, and despite "massive turbulence" were able to circle for eleven minutes checking sextant readings.         SIOUX INDIAN PAINTING PART I PAINTINGS OF THE SIOUX AND OTHER TRIBES OF THE GREAT PLAINS [with:] PART II THE ART OF AMOS BAD HEART BUFFALO

Nice, France, 1938. Folio. Text and illustrations laid in original cloth portfolio with illustrated front cover, string-tied. Slight wear to extremities of each portfolio. Plates all fine. Overall a very good, clean set. One of 400 numbered sets, signed and numbered by the publisher. Comprised of letterpress introductions and notes by Hartley Burr Alexander, accompanied by fifty folio plates printed via gravure and the pochoir process (twenty-five plates per volume). These are two of the most desirable of all the lavish Szwedzicki folios. The beautiful plates depict the artwork of a number of Sioux, Shoshone, and Kiowa artists (e.g. Kills Two, Amos Bad Heart Buffalo, Pretty Hawk, Chief Washakie, and Silver Horn). The second portfolio contains artwork exclusively by Amos Bad Heart Buffalo, including a series of famous scenes from the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Seventeen of the twenty-five plates in the second part relate entirely to the Custer battle, and others to the Wounded Knee massacre. When the drawings were reproduced in 1967 in A PICTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE OGLALA SIOUX, they were singled out as a Custer "Highspot." Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in a similar format in the south of France in the 1930s. These portfolios have become rather uncommon due to cannibalization over the years, and it has been suggested that some sets were destroyed during World War II. A beautiful and important collection of 19th-century American Indian art.

Hoornik, Karel Jonckheere, Cor Klinkenbijl, Louis Th. Lehmann, A. Marja, Adriaan Morriën, F.C.

SKETCHBOOK. Of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Collins. London. 1938. FIRST EDITION. 4to.(11.8 x 9.6 inches). Beautifully illustrated with 12 full colour plates, each mounted onto thick brown paper and each with a printed tissue paper guard. The plates show all the major characters in fully finished state including The Queen, The Witch, Snow White and, of course, the seven Dwarves- Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy & Dopey. All other pages are illustrated with reproductions of the artists pencil sketches showing the development of the various characters, with notes beside the drawings. Decorative endpapers showing sketches of classic Disney style Rabbits, Birds and Deer, presumably Bambi was in the mind of the artists at this stage. Surprisingly, no American edition of this book was published. Original beige coarse grain cloth with black lettering to the front panel. Aside from some light marks to the outer edge of the cloth boards and endpapers this is a very good, bright copy in the original colour illustrated, price clipped dustwrapper showing Snow white and the Seven Dwarves on the front and two Fawns on the rear panel. Closed tears to the top and bottom of the dustwrapper spine have been strengthened to the rear of the paper with archive tape but overall a very good example of this fantastic book.
