Bamberg. Eine Stätte deutscher Kultur. Fünf Jahre nationalsozialistischer Aufbau 1933/1937.

[Bamberg, Buch- und Kunst-Druckerei, J. Nagengast, 1938]. - Three parts in 2 Volumes (complete). 4tos. Frontispiece photograph of Adolf Hitler, "Der Ehrenbürger der Stadt Bamberg." 176 pp., printed rectos only. Illustrated with B & W photographs (approx. 40 pp.); 92 pp., printed rectos only. Illustrated throughout with tables. Both volumes are in the original illustrated letterpress printed (in black Volume One and in black and red Volume Two) stiff white textured wrappers, unprinted white cloth tape spines. The text in both volumes is mimeograph printed on very inexpensive acidic stock which has significantly browned and is quite fragile; the front-matter and section dividers in both volumes is printed on better stock. The photographs are printed on white coated non-acidic paper. Text in German. Volume One: I. Teil: Politische Rückschau. [Political Review]. (NOTE: English translations in brackets are mine.) II. Teil: Die Leistungen der Stadtverwaltung in den Jahren 1933/1937. [The services of the municipal administration in the years 1933/1937.] The black and white photographs, some full page and others two or three per page, depict German National Socialist party gatherings, both large and small (most in full uniform) in Bamberg, party officials, and historical/cultural sites of the city. Some of the officials identified in the photographs include: Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Bauschen, Lorenz Zahneisen, Hans Schemmer and Georg Metzner. Volume Two: III. Teil: Bamberg in Zahlen. [Bamberg in Numbers]. This Volume, profusely illustrated with tables most of which span the five year period, contains: A) Stadtgebiet [City]; B) Bevölkerung [Population]; C) Bautätigkeit und Wohnungswesen [Construction and Housing]; D) Handel und Gewerbe [Commerce and Industry]; E) Landwirtschaft und Viehhaltung [Agriculture and Livestock]; F) Märkte, Schlachtungen und Verbrauch [Markets, Slaughter and Consumption]; G) Preise und Löhne [Prices and Wages]; H) Verkehr [Traffic]; J) Arbeitsmarkt und Wohlfahrtswesen [Labor Market and Welfare System]; K) Gesundheitswesen [Healthcare]; L) Offentliche Sicherheit und Reinlichkeit [Public Safety and Sanitation]; M) Schulen, Bildungs- und Kirchenwesen [Schools, Eduction and Churches]; N) Geld- und Kreditwesen [Money and Banking]; O) Stadthaushalt und städt. Personalwesen [City Budget and City Human Resources]; P) Naturverhältnisse [Natural Conditions]. The covers of both volumes have small tears along the cloth spine and on the rear cover of Volume One, small area abrasions (sticker removal?) bottom of front covers, but overall quite clean and the binding is tight. Volume Two has an ink signature/name stamped twice front cover (more on this shortly). The text block of Volume One has very small chips on the corners of the fore edge and a small edge tear on approx. 1/4 of the pages on the fore edge from a scratch; some small edge tears. None of the conditions affect either the text or the photographs. Volume Two, which comprises the statistical compilations, has small chips top fore edge of text block on pages 4-17 and larger chips (approx. 1" x 3/4") and a 1" tear the top fore edge of pages 56-92. Once again, these conditions do no affect the text. There is a purple ink signature/name stamp with the name Fr. (? perhaps Friedrich) Wenninger or Werninger in the following places: Volume One: front free endpaper (multiple times), title page (twice), and on the majority of photographs but, perhaps significantly, not on the frontispiece photograph of Hitler. Volume Two: twice on the cover. My speculation about the signature stamp is that it was either from a contemporary Nazi party official at publication or a censor immediately after the war when this, and thousands of other Nazi publications, were banned by various organizations in Soviet East Germany. A rare set. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Autographed letter.

1938. On The Royal Historian of Oz Letterhead. Typed letter from Ruth Plumy Thompson on The Office of The Royal Historian of Oz letterhead, with notes in Thompson's hand to the margins. A very warm and chatty letter from the then current writer of the Oz stories, Ruth Plumly Thompson was the next writer of the series after L. Frank Baum. The letter is very chatty on all things which were current in Oz, including the new titles. Thompson also discusses with the recipient her thoughts on the plays and films of oz, "The Wizard of Oz is being made into a musical and while I suppose they'll spoil and change everything--it may turn out better then we think. After that the Oz books will probably be used in animated cartoons--and that WILL be fun. I'm sorry Walt Disney could not get Mrs. Baum to let him have her ( hand written in the margin "husband's") books as he was interested in doing the whole set. But as she has sold ("her" crossed out and hand writtten in the margin " L. F. B's Mr. B has been dead as you know for quite awhile") books to another studio--mine will probably have to be sold to the same people." Thompson also talks about a role she played in a play as Ozma making her an "Princess of Oz." A very interesting letter containing lots of Oz gossip.

EDWARDIAN And JAZZ AGE ENGLISH FACTORY LACE SAMPLE BOOKS

Essex, England, 1938. Period half-calf over black ribbed cloth sample books produced by Hassall & Lucking, tightback binding w/ spine glued directly onto sewing and signatures. Set now preserved in custom quarter-leather clamshell cases. Spine leather mostly perished. Extensive annotations & markings on endpapers of two of the volumes. Remnants of paper labels on spines, chipping & wear, scuffing, old tape reinforcements to spine of one, signatures split from stubs in centers due to the extreme weight of the samples and paper. Cases - Nr Fine. Bindings - Good. Samples - generally Very Good, if not better.. 3 volumes: 102, 92, 57 ll. Volumes filled with ~ 3355 tipped-in lace samples, lace borders, some in pink, some black samples, a few multi-coloured, a few pencil designs for the looms, all with paper labels indicating lot number, date, productions runs, and loom notes (many w/ red markings indicating that they were pulled, or their patterns destroyed), ranging in size from 2 inches square to samples 8 inches wide by 36 inches long, and folded onto the leaf. Elephant folio. 24-1/2" x 16" x 6-1/2" This breathtaking set of Edwardian & Jazz Age lace factory sample catalogues offers an invaluable and vast tactile resource for the types, styles, weights, and design of machine-made lace during the first 4 decades of the 20th century.  The lace samples themselves made from cotton, cotton blends, wool, wool & art silk, and silk are primarily white, with some samples in black, pink, a few with pink highlights, flesh tone, as well as a few multi-coloured. Included are samples of Chantilly, Cluny, Craquele Net, Baby Irish, Duchesse lace, Filet, Honiton, Limerick, Macrame, Maltese, Mechlin, Metal Lace, Nottingham, Princess Lace, Tatting, Torchon, and many others. These catalogues were preserved by an English family whose ancestors had produced machine-made and hand-made lace near Essex, and East Devon for decades, bringing them with them when they immigrated to the United States in the late 1950s. The range & breadth of samples is quite astonishing, and show the style developments from Edwardian through World War I, and the explosion of interest in the 1920s. Lace during the Edwardian period was used in borders, couture blouses, applied on jackets, coats, hats, gloves, offering the quintessential Gibson girl look that all fine couture houses, as well as homemakers wished to emulate. If you were a wealthy Edwardian society hostess, your clothes contained cascades and layers of lace emphasizing the low bustline, delicate sleeves, and high lace fabric collars were a requirement, except for evening wear wear lace was worn on exceptionally low sweetheart, square, and round decollete necklines to show off their stunning jewelry. Lace was very popular during the Jazz Age, especially for applications on bridal gowns, lace panels inset into slinky satin garments, or simply Chantilly lace evening dresses. In addition, these samples here include lace borders for table runners, curtains, and numerous other home decorating applications. This catalogue records the lavish products of British lace manufacture in the famed region of East Devon, with extensive annotations to when product lines were destroyed, however the notes clearly show that many of these designs remained popular up until the late 1950s, with some samples having red marks being noted as finally having their weaving patterns, and product lines destroyed after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth.

        Too Many Cooks

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1938. Second printing. Fine/Near Fine. A very sharp, Fine copy of the book with the last twelve leaves, the recipes, printed on fine blue paper stock. In a bright dust jacket with a few short tears and color added to the spine ends and corners, but a very attractive example nonetheless. "Second Large Printing" on the front flap of the dust jacket, no publisher's logo on the copyright page. Selling over 45 million copies and being translated into 22 different languages, Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe detective series was undoubtedly successful and has been praised for its intelligent organization and rich development. In his fifth novel, "Too Many Cooks," The New York Times praised Stout for his "smooth concoction of crime and cooking," an original and tantalizing novel that attracted a broad audience with its inclusion of crime-related recipes. "Too Many Cooks" remains one of the more finely crafted installments of the Nero Wolfe detective series. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES. A LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 750 COPIES ONLY This an important and scholarly Bahr collection catalogue. It is an essential and scarce reference source. This work covers 25 fine examples of the greatest Chinese paintings found in the world-famous Bahr Collection. * Each item is carefully described and annotated by the celebrated art-historian and Sinologist, Osvald Siren. * ISSUED IN A LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF ONLY 750 COPIES. This work was issued in a FIRST and ONLY single LIMITED EDITION OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES, each of which were hand numbered in pen. * The publisher printed a few "over-runs" or extra copies to insure at least 750 pristine & flawless complete copies. There few extra and flawless copies were then bound up in the identical cloth, without hand numbering, they are called "out of sequence." They were distributed to the author & publisher for presentation to personal friends. They retain the same value as the other copies. There was a very small number of the "over-runs" issued for this purpose that occasionally reach the market. Because the book was published in a very small edition it has always been hard to find. * Printed in a Deluxe edition, on heavy deckle-edge paper, gold stamped titles, hand numbered [or "out-of-sequence"] with Siren's lucid introductory essay, each plate has a tissue guard protecting it, as usual there are some with wrinkles, by and large nice condition. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Not in Arntzen & Rainwater. **** Color scans can be sent by email.         La Petite Illustration (January 1938-September 1939, issues #852-934, 4 vols.)

L'Illustration, 1938-1939, Hardcover, Book Condition: VG- (Page margins are tanning naturally; text and illus. are clear.), Illustrated By: CAVE. 4 vols. Green library buckram, gilt letters on spines, various paginations, BW illus. Text is in French. A four-volume bound set representing the last 82 issues of the publication of "La Petite Illustration," a weekly art supplement distributed with L'Illustration, a weekly Parisian newspaper. This periodical ran from 1913-1939, and appears to have ended with the war's encroachment on Paris. Its parent paper stopped publication in 1944. This ground-breaking supplement published plays, novels, and poetry, and often was the first or only outlet to do so. In this lot, you will find the scripts for Shakespeare's "Othello," adapted by Jean Sarment (#881), and Edmond Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac" (#905), among many other plays. #919 is an issue of poems. Novellas include French versions of Pearl S. Buck's "Le Tigre" (#901), James Hilton's "Au Revoir, Monsieur Chips!" (#913); and Hamlin Garland's "Le Vagabond" (#921). Serialized novels include: "Anne-Jeanne" by Gaston Rageot (#857-859); "L'Epaisseur d'un Cheveu (A Hair Divides)" by Claude Houghton (#873-875); "Marcus Fleurette" by Lucie Delame (#884-886); "La Double Escapade" by G. A. Birmingham (#892-894); "La Cendre Chaude" by Henry Bordeaux (#908-910); "La Vallee Perdue" by Noelle Roger (#915-197); "Danse Pour ton Ombre!" by J. H. Louwyck (#931). Contemporary pieces include "Le Peril Exterieur: L'Hitlerisme" (#895); "Le Peril Interieur: Le Communisme" (#897); and "La Defense Passive: Protection des Populations Civiles contre les Attaques Aeriennes" (#927). An uncommon find, to be sure.

        Homage To Catalonia

London: Secker and Warburg 1938 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's lime green cloth, lettered in gilt. About near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, some faint soiling to the otherwise bright boards, minor offsetting to the free endpapers, otherwise fresh interior. Overall, a very clean and pleasing copy. Homage to Catalonia is Orwell's account of the Spanish Civil War that he wrote shortly after he escaping from Spain to France in 1937. After heading to Spain as a journalist in 1936, Orwell joined the Republicans in their fight against Franco's Nationalists; unlike other leftist foreign intellectuals, however, he joined the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista, or POUM). In Homage to Catalonia, Orwell recounts his experiences as a soldier and disillusionment with totalitarian regimes. Notably, Victor Gollancz, who had published the English editions of Orwell's earlier works, refused to publish Homage to Catalonia because of its radical political stance. Instead, it was published by Secker and Warburg, the firm that would go on to publish Orwell's best known works - Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).
