Valse-caprice pour le Piano. Autograph musical manuscript signed "Ant. Rubinstein." Undated, but ca. 1870

Folio (352 x 265 mm.). Finely bound in full modern green morocco with facsimile of composer's autograph signature to upper and monogrammatic device of Werner-Eberhard Müller to lower, all within decorative gilt border, marbled endpapers. [1] (title, with signature "Ant. Rubinstein"), [2-4] pp. Notated in ink on 16-stave hand-ruled music paper with blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris. With autograph dedication to title: "A Madame la Comtesse Louisa de Mercy & d'Argentau [!Louise de Mercy- Argenteau];" autograph caption to first page of music: "Valse=Caprice;" and tempo indication to upper left corner: "Vivace." Repeats not written out. Engraver's corrections and annotations in pencil to first page of music: "Verlag und Eigenthum v[on] Bartholf Senff Leipzig;" "16620" in blue pencil to title. From the collection of Werner-Eberhard Müller, Leipzig, with "Werner-Eberhard Müller Leipzig 1938" and "Seiner lieben Susanne zugeeignet von ihrem Vater Leipzig 1961" in pencil to verso of front endpaper. Slightly worn and soiled, particularly at upper edge of last leaf; creased at folds; small circular piece of lavender paper glued to title. . "A charming concert waltz with large and dangerous leaps and a memorable tune." Sitsky pp. 134-35 The annotations confirm that the present autograph of the complete work served as the engraver's manuscript for the first edition, published in 1870 by Bartholf Senff in Leipzig (PN 937). The faulty spelling of the dedicatee's name is faithfully preserved in that edition. The copy on IMSLP, uploaded by the Biblioteca Nacional de España, is not a first edition (despite the identical plate number), and has variant readings in the musical text. Rubinstein dedicated the work to Louise Comtesse de Mercy-Argenteau (Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, Comtesse de Mercy-Argenteau, 1837-1890) a Belgian aristocrat of considerable musical erudition; Mercy-Argenteau developed a keen interest in Russian music from about 1880 and became one of its most ardent champions in the West. She was particularly close to César Cui, on whom she wrote a monograph. Her relationship with Anton Rubinstein is unexplored; the present dedication, however, demonstrates that she knew Rubinstein well before her acquaintance with the Russian nationalist composers.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Freud").

"39 Elsworthy Road NW 3" (d. i. London), 24. Dabei bleibt es also.

Was Du mir vom Auslandsdeutschtum schreibst, ist packend.

FAIRCHILDS-EVANSVILLE-E. KY. 1938-1941 [Cover Title] [Original Photo Album]

Fairchilds, KY and Evansville, [IN], [ca. 1938-1941]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong folio album. Original (likely homemade) wooden covers with screw binding and brass hinges - measuring approximately 15.25" x 12". Containing 29 black paper leaves with 252 black and white, primarily snapshot photographs glue-mounted both recto and verso. Small title photograph to front cover torn, light handling wear to album exterior. A handful of images apparently perished. Otherwise about near fine throughout. A classic album of Americana with clear and sharp domestic, community, occupational and railroad themed images. Compiled by the Fairchilds family of Evansville, IN between 1938 and 1941, the patriarch appears to have worked in gas and oil exploration in and around the western Kentucky / southern Indiana / southern Illinois regions. Many named images of the men Fairchilds worked alongside as well as facilities located in Keensburg, IL, Centralia, IL, Cloverport, KY, and Edgar County, IL. A wonderful series includes approximately 20 interior and exterior views of a new family home located on Plaza Dr. in Evansville, and dozens of shots show downtown Evansville, its storefronts, signage, holiday festivities, and decorations. Several railroad photos and a handful from a trip to Washington, D.C. are also included. All images carefully framed with a strong aesthetic eye. Particularly striking are the many close-up portraits throughout rendered with an intimacy not typically seen in similar albums. An uncommonly well-composed and -constructed album of middle class life in the southern midwest at the tail-end of The Depression, just before the beginning of U.S. involvement in WWII.

        Prelude for War

London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1938, 1938. Crime adventure. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth titled in black to spine and front board, sunning to spine, light fading and edgewear to extremities, strong and bright. In a crisp, strong example of the Thompson dustwrapper, wear to extremities, light marginal creasinga and chipping, closed tear to upper margin of the front panel, creasing to head of spine, trinagle of loss to upper corner of the rear panel, nevertheless a most handsome example of a scarce bit of sainthood. Shows very well, blue endpapers, internally bright and clean. A Saint novel.

[Op. 81]. Friedenstag Oper in einem Aufzug von Joseph Gregor... Op. 81. Orchester-Partitur... Meinen Freunden Viorica Ursuleac und Clemens Krauss gewidmet. [Full score]

Berlin W.: Adolph Fürstner (Inhaber Johannes Oertel) [PN A. 8360 F.]. 1938. Large folio. Original black cloth-backed publisher's gray printed boards. [i] (title), [ii] (statement of rights of performance, limitation statement), [iii] (cast list and list of orchestral instruments), [iv] (blank), [5]-266 pp. Title in facsimile of copyist's manuscript; music transferred from engraved plates. Printer's note to lower left corner of p. 266: "Stich u. Druck v. Oscar Brandstetter, Leipzig-Berlin." Text in German. Printed note to verso of title, completed in black ink: "Dieses Exemplar der Partitur Nr. [23] ist nur [zur leihweisen Benutzung] bestimmt. [Berlin, den 22. ?October 1938] [Handstamp:] als bevollmächtigter Vertreter des Herrn Dr. Richard Strauß [Adolph Fürstner]." Binding worn, rubbbed and bumped; upper stained; spine reinforced; endpapers creased. Minor stain to outer edge of title and following two leaves; stain to upper left corner of final leaf. . First Edition. Rare. No. 23 of an unspecified number of copies printed. Trenner 271. Mueller von Asow p. 949. Not in Hirsch or Sonneck. Worldcat locates only three copies in the United States and three copies in European libraries. In 1935 Otto Fürstner (1886-1958), the son of the company's founder, emigrated to England and sold the German share of his company to his long-term deputy, Johannes Oertel (1879-1961) while continuing his old business from London. Oertel continued to use the name of Fürstner; however, due to the change in ownership, many reference works and library catalogues list Oertel as the publisher, without reference to Fürstner. This pacifist work, the first of Gregor's libretti for Strauss, was first performed at the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich on July 24, 1938 under Clemens Krauss. Viorica Ursuleac (Krauss's wife) created the role of Maria. Gregor ranks next to Hofmannsthal in libretto output for Strauss. "Although [he] left important monographs on the history of ViennaÂ’s theatres, on Richard StraussÂ’s operas and on the broad cultural history of theatre and of opera, he is probably best known as the librettist of Richard StraussÂ’s Friedenstag (1938), Daphne (1938) and Die Liebe der Danae (1944). The collaboration began in 1935, after the anti-semitic climate in Nazi Germany had compelled StraussÂ’s librettist Stefan Zweig to break off his fruitful partnership with the composer."         Calendar of Annual Events in Oklahoma

[Oklahoma City]: Works Progress Administration in the State of Oklahoma, 1938. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. First edition. Stapled orange pictorial wraps with clear spiderweb tissue guards. Illustrated. Very Good condition overall. Small chip to upper corner of front cover and another on back cover that effects the tissue-guard. Cover worn at bottom staple. In much better shape than usually found as wraps are quite brittle. Before any of his well-known hard-boiled suspense novels, Thompson wrote and edited this guidebook for the Federal Writers' Project of Oklahoma. He was a Communist Party member at the time and his writing here, stylistically, is far removed from his comparatively-apolitical, suspenseful pulp novels of the pulp era.

        Scoop

London: Chapman & Hall Ltd,, 1938. A Novel About Journalists. Octavo. Original red and black snakeskin patterned cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine a little rolled, board edges lightly rubbed, very faint foxing to edges of text block. An excellent copy in the unclipped jacket, with lightly sunned spine, and some nicks and short closed teats to extremities with repairs to verso. First edition, first impression with the second issue dust jacket. A mighty comic novel of Fleet Street, the jacket initially appeared with the trompe l'œil front panel, which reproduces the torn front page of a newspaper, including a clear pastiche of the Daily Express masthead. Beaverbrook threatened to sue and the jacket was reprinted without the masthead.

        Scoop

Chapman & Hall, 1938. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original patterned cloth in superb condition, very bright gilt lettering, pages splendidly clean, touch of endpaper browning. In the very rare first-issue dustjacket, with the Daily Beast masthead artwork and original price of 7s 6d - the masthead was changed after Lord Beaverbrook threatened to sue because of the alleged similarity with the Daily Express. Neat restoration to edges, with more extensive work to head of spine, some surface rubbing and creasing, spine very slightly sunned. In effect a very good, very scarce example of Waugh's splendid Fleet Street satire.         THE BLACK BOOK

Obelisk Press 1938 - First edition. Original buff pictorial wrappers, lettered in black. Author's presentation copy, inscribed twice on the half title, the first in a small neat hand, "To Peter from Larry, Paris 1938" and the second, thirty five years later in a large, expansive, possibly rather drunk hand, "Inscribed for Peter Bull by his old friend Larry Durrell, April 1973" with the downstroke of the I running the height of the page, taking in the downstrokes of the P and B. A good only copy, with the spine relaid, retaining all but the top inch and the corners frayed. Pages browned with the preliminaries begining to crack at the gutter. Peter Bull was an actor, writer, occultist, and arctophile. Durrell met Bull through George Wilkinson in the early 1930s and formed a lasting friendship, as the two inscriptions are testament to. Bull and Durrell saw each other intermittently over the years, mainly in Corfu and London. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Notably (between 1864 and 1867), he served as director of the National Museum during the rule of Maximilian I of Mexico. As a result, he was tried as a traitor to the homeland and sentenced to prison. Thereafter, Orozco y Berra became a member of the Mexican Academy of Language. Considered his Masterpiece, "Historia de la dominación española en México" was published four volumes (1880/1881) and the set offered here is the earliest realistically obtainable printing of the work. The prior owner of this set, George McClelland Foster, Jr., was born on October 9, 1913 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. He made notable contributions to anthropological theory and practice; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. The Provenance for this set, signed by the executor of Foster's library, is loosely laid in. Foster's name/ownership stamp to front of each volume and a note stating his presumed date of acquisition (12/6/47) and his purchase price has been written on front end paper of volume 4. An excellent set with slight edge and a small chip to Volume III's spine label. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Freud").

"39 Elsworthy Road NW 3" (d. i. London), 24. VI. 1938. - 1½ SS. 4to. Dabei bleibt es also. Briefkopf; gering fleckig.
