        Out of Africa

New York: Random House, 1938 First American edition. Publisher's rust cloth over black spine, with a flamingo illustration to the front board in gilt, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, green top stain; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of wild animals by a river in a dense jungle-forest to the front panel and spine, lettered in black. About fine, with a minor scuff to the front board, a hint of offsetting to the endpapers, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a touch of light wear to the extremities, a slight hint of faint toning to the spine and flap folds, else bright and fresh. Overall, a near fine and very handsome copy. Out of Africa is the memoir of Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke, a Danish author who published many of her works under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, and is based on the author's experience living in Kenya when it was controlled by the British Empire. It offers a unique glimpse at life in colonial East Africa. Interestingly, while this first American edition credits Isak Dinesen on its dust jacket, the first English edition cites Karen Blixen as the author. In 1985, Out of Africa was adapted into a film of the same name starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep under the direction of Sydney Pollock.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Sir John Piers

Mullinger, The Westmeath Examiner [1938]., Soft cover, Book Condition: Very Good, 1st Edition. First edition - limited to 50 copies. 8vo. Ten pages stapled into card wrappers, lightly sunned at edges, with the front wrapper serving as title page. With three pencilled corrections in the author's hand. Illustrated with two fairly poorly reproduced photographs of Tristernagh Abbey, and with the author's initialled complements slip laid-in (this last from the 1970s, to judge from the handwriting). Some superficial creasing, and a tiny touch of spotting to several blank leaves. A very good copy of an extremely scarce pseudonymous publication, one of the most fugitive Betjeman items. A spoof biographical study in verse of Sir John Piers, a notorious bankrupt who was tried in 1807 on charges of criminal conspiracy for making a 'diabolical wager' to seduce Lord Cloncurry's wife. Written whilst Betjeman was staying at Packenham Hall, Ireland with Edward and Christine Longford and printed by the local paper.

Oeuvre originale

The Spanish Earth, the first state of the limited edition

The J. B. Savage Company, Cleveland, Ohio 1938 - This is the rare first state, distinguished by the illustrated endpapers with which only 50-100 copies of this numbered limited edition were issued. The Spanish Earth publishes a transcript of Hemingway’s narration for the sound track for the 1937 film of the same title, the purpose of which was to raise money for the Loyalist (Republican, anti-Franco) cause during the Spanish Civil War. This is copy is hand-numbered "111" of the limited edition of 1000 copies. Per Hanneman, "There are two issues of the first edition. The first issue has pictorial endpapers, front and back, showing a large F.A.I. [Federacion Anarquista Iberica] banner, in orange, flying over the heads of advancing soldiers." Hemingway protested the F.A.I. endpapers, and so there were only "between 50 and 100 copies of the first issue." The second issue has plain tan endpapers. This excellent copy of the first issue bears the striking first issue F.A.I. endpapers. Condition approaches fine. The illustrated tan cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners and no toning. We would grade this copy as truly fine if not for a few trivial and small brown stains. The contents are pristine; we find no toning, spotting, or previous ownership marks. The binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American writer of novels and short stories, a larger than life figure whose writing and persona made him a true literary giant of the 20th century. Born in a Chicago suburb, he developed an early passion for outdoor pursuits, spending time with his father at the family's summer home in Michigan. In his junior year of high school, he took a journalism class, and continued to be active in the school's newspaper and yearbook until graduation. His first job out of school was as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star, whose style guide may have provided the basis for Hemingway's crisp writing style: "Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative." Responding to a recruiting campaign in 1918, Hemingway volunteered, and served on the Italian front as an ambulance driver. He was seriously injured two months later, and returned home. Hemingway returned to Europe in the early 1920s as the foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star Weekly, living and working in Paris. It was here that he met and fell under the influence of the so-called "Lost Generation", including the likes of James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was the latter's Great Gatsby that helped compel Hemingway to move beyond poems and short stories into novels. Hemingway returned to America in 1927 with his second wife. Hemingway continued to practice journalism and, in 1937, traveled to Spain to report on the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance. The Spanish Civil War proved something of a personal and literary watershed for Hemingway. His wife, Pauline, was a devout Catholic who sided with the fascist regime of Franco, while Hemingway supported the Republicans. When Hemingway returned to Florida after Franco’s victory, he divorced Pauline and married Martha Gellhorn, with whom he had begun an affair while in Spain. Hemingway’s novel For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), which takes place during the Spanish Civil War, was largely based on his experience in Spain. In 1953 Hemingway was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea. The following year he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, for "his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style".

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Screenplay]: Man About Town

Paramount Pictures, (Los Angeles) 1938 - Screenplay. Quarto. (2), 22, 10, 8, 19, 39, 34pp. Stapled mimeographed sheets. Dated in December 27, 1938. A little darkening to the edges of the first page, else about fine. The second page, which lists the characters, has had the actors' names handwritten in. Boldly Signed on the front page by most of the principal players: Jack Benny, Dorothy Lamour, Edward Arnold, Phil Harris, Monty Woolley, Betty Grable, and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. A pencil note on the page states: "June 25, 1939 from Joe," presumably the source of the signed script. The film, a musical comedy with Benny as a Broadway producer who cavorts with married women in order to get his preferred girlfriend Lamour jealous, was directed by Mark Sandrich, and written by Morrie Ryskind. A very nice collection of signatures, and presumably rarely found thus. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

London: Chapman & Hall Ltd., , 1938. A Novel About Journalists. Octavo. Original red and black snakeskin patterned cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Bookplate of D. M. H. Reeler Reitz. Jacket spine just lightly sunned, a few nicks, chips , closed-tears and light creases, light laterl crease across first few leaves but nonetheless an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, with the second issue dust jacket. A mighty comic novel of Fleet Street, the jacket initially appeared with the trompe l'Âœil front panel, which reproduced the torn front page of a newspaper, including a clear pastiche of the Daily Express masthead. Beaverbrook threatened to sue and the jacket was reprinted without the masthead.

The War the Infantry Knew 1914-1919.A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium with The Second Battalion His Majesty's Twenty-Third Foot, The Royal Welch Fusiliers: founded on personal records, recollections and reflections, assembled, edited and partly

The First UK Printing published by P.S.King and Son Ltd in 1938.The BOOK is in near FINE condition. Original red cloth with gilt titling to the spine and the initials of the regiment gilt to the upper board.Covers are clean apart from a tiny black dot to the spine.Light pushing to the spine ends with a little fading and tiny splitting at the spine tips.A hint of toning to the text block.Free from inscriptions, erasures and markings. The endpapers are only very slightly tanned.27 leaves of sketch-maps bound in at the rear. The very scarce First edition, being one of just 500 copies privately produced by the author. As such this remains an extremely elusive title. The battalion included the authors of two of the most famous literary accounts of the Great War, Graves and Sassoon, with the latter contributing a chapter to the present work entitled "A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action," covering the period from March 12th to April 16th, 1917, which is described as, "An early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer." Graves offered to contribute, but Dunn was not an admirer of Goodbye to all that, and declined his offer. Graves is mentioned, disparagingly, a handful of times in the text. Dunn's is an extraordinary book, in the Face of Battle John Keegan described it as "one of the most interesting and revealing books of its type a genuinely truthful and fascinating picture of the war as it was for the infantry." Compiled in diary form from the reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion, it is without doubt the most authentic account of the experience of the Western Front at Battalion level. Collectible. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
