        Homage To Catalonia

London: Secker and Warburg, 1938 First edition, first printing. Publisher's lime green cloth, lettered in gilt. About near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, some faint soiling to the otherwise bright boards, minor offsetting to the free endpapers, otherwise fresh interior. Overall, a very clean and pleasing copy. Homage to Catalonia is Orwell's account of the Spanish Civil War that he wrote shortly after he escaping from Spain to France in 1937. After heading to Spain as a journalist in 1936, Orwell joined the Republicans in their fight against Franco's Nationalists; unlike other leftist foreign intellectuals, however, he joined the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista, or POUM). In Homage to Catalonia, Orwell recounts his experiences as a soldier and disillusionment with totalitarian regimes. Notably, Victor Gollancz, who had published the English editions of Orwell's earlier works, refused to publish Homage to Catalonia because of its radical political stance. Instead, it was published by Secker and Warburg, the firm that would go on to publish Orwell's best known works - Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

London: Macmillan and Co, and Johannesburg: Hortors Ltd, 1938 and 1923. - Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title. An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' – because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats. According to biographer James Mellow, Henry McBride, along with Carl van Vechten, was one of Stein's most important friends in the building of her American reputation. From the time that they met in 1913, McBride became a powerful promoter of Stein's work in the States, "he mentioned her frequently and favorably in his columns for the Sun, often quoting her at length. His promotion of her work and her her reputation during the years of World War I kept her name before the public ... " Wilson A30

Chipped at head of spine, lower corner on front cover slightly bruised, else very good. Interior fine, bright and crisp. Overall, a very good plus copy. 'High Street' was published in an edition of 2000 unnumbered copies. The lithographic stones were kept for a possible reprint, but were destroyed when the Curwen Press was hit by a bomb in 1941, ruling out any post-war reprint of the book. Ravilious was appointed an official War Artist in WWII, and died when his plane was lost off the coast of Iceland in 1942. Individual lithographs from the book have fetched very high prices, unfortunately causing dealers to break up damaged copies making this a much-coveted book.. First Edition. Illustrated boards.         The Tale of the Land of Green Ginger.

4to. Recently handsomely bound in half dark blue calf over dark blue cloth sides, spine with 5 raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt with gilt floral centres, top edge gilt; pp. [viii], 9-143; with wonderful coloured illustrations throughout by the author; a fine copy, both externally and internally. First U.S. edition; issued in the same format as the U.K. edition and published the following year. This fantasy tale has become a modern children's classic and continues the story of Aladdin, describing how Aladdin's son goes on a quest to release a magician from a spell. Interestingly Beatrix Potter referred to 'The Land of Green Ginger' as the setting for her story The Fairy Caravan (1929). Noel Langley was a South-African born playwright and novelist who, interestingly, wrote the screenplay for the M.G.M. adaptation of Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

London: Chapman & Hall Ltd., , 1938. A Novel About Journalists. Octavo. Original red and black marbled cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket and wraparound band. Spine slightly faded; an excellent copy in the jacket with short closed tear to head of front panel, fold to rear panel, and a couple of nicks and some light rubbing to extremities. First edition, first impression, with the rare first issue dust jacket and accompanying wraparound band. The trompe l'Âœil front panel, which reproduces the torn front page of the fictional Daily Beast, William Boot's employer in the novel, was a clear pastiche of the Daily Express masthead. Memorably mocked in the novel as Lord Copper, the Express's proprietor Lord Beaverbrook immediately threatened to sue and the jacket was quickly reprinted with the offending header altered.         Der Leviathan in der Staatslehre des Thomas Hobbes. Sinn und Fehlschlag eines politischen Symbols.

Hamburg, Hanseatische Verlagsanstalt, 1938. 132 S. OLwd. OU. Seltene erste Ausgabe. (Umschlag mit hinterlegten Randläsuren und kleinen Einrissen, sonst gut) [Carl Schmitt (zeitweise auch Carl Schmitt-Dorotic)[ (* 11. Juli 1888 in Plettenberg; † 7. Journals of John D. Lee, 1846-7 and 1859

Salt Lake City, UT: Privately printed for Rolla Bishop Watt by Western Printing Company, 1938. First edition, limited. Hardcover. Very good/very good. SIGNED. 294 pp. Quarto [28 cm] Green cloth with gilt stamped titles on the front board and backstrip. The extremities are mildly bumped, rubbed, and faded. The tipped in portrait at page six is missing, with remnants of glue on the page. The dust jacket has a couple of small red ink stains on the front panel, is lightly rubbed, and has a number of short chips and closed tears in the edges. With sunning to the jacket's spine, and a piece of tape on the reverse, at the head of the spine. Otherwise a sharp copy of this scarce title. Inscribed by the editor to fellow historian C.M. Drury. One in an edition of 250. This copy is out of series, and the limitation page states this copy to be an exchange copy. A professional curmudgeon, Charles Kelly was the first to wade into the murky water of John D. Lee. Kelly acquired the diaries from the Lee family and from Rolla Watt, who was the nephew of W.W. Bishop, the Nevada lawyer who represented Lee at trial. For all of Kelly's spite, he was surprisingly fair to Lee and paved the way for other historians, most notably Juanita Brooks.
