Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

London: Macmillan and Co, and Johannesburg: Hortors Ltd, 1938 and 1923.. Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title. An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' – because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats.

I'll be back as soon as I can but I don't know how soon that will be. I hope very early. You have been very patient with me. If you wish--will you call Wallenstein in 153 who will give you a drink and be nice to you until I return? If you do not want to do that, the clerk will give you my key. You will find a bottle of gin and a syphon. Have some and I will come back as soon as I can. You can have a nap. If, thoroughly disgusted, you go away, I shall be very sad. John. In 1938, Pat Covici moved to Viking Press, where he convinced John Steinbeck to sign. Viking Press published The Grapes of Wrath, which received a 1940 Pulitzer Prize and East of Eden was dedicated to Covici. His relationship with Steinbeck is portrayed in the book, "Steinbeck and Covici: The Story of a Friendship," edited by Thomas Fensch.

        The Rubaiyat

(London): Golden Cockerel Press, 1938. Buckland Wright, John. Quarto. (102) pp. With eight illustrations by John Buckland Wright, printed from copper engravings. From an edition of 300, this is one of thirty copies specially bound and containing five additional plates and a collotype facsimile of Edward Fitzgerald's Monk Latin manuscript. The colophon is signed by Buckland Wright, as well as by the translator, Sir E. Dennison Ross, and by the author of the Introduction, Charles Ganz. The additional suite of copper engravings are more erotic than those accompanying the text. Reid notes that these illustrations "rank among the artist's best" and that "J.B.W. himself had a particular fondness for this book". Buckland Wright would reissue eleven of these engravings in a Dutch edition published in 1944. One of the smaller limitations from the Golden Cockerel Press, this issue seldom appears on the market. Bound in publisher's full white pigskin with cover decoration in gilt after a design by Buckland Wright. Spine shows uniform toning, faint spot of discoloration to upper corner of rear cover. A nearly fine copy, housed in the publisher's fleece-lined slipcase, which has some finger-soiling. (Pertelote 138; Reid A28).

Lerne hebra¿isch, die Sprache Pala¿stinas :praktisches Lehrbuch zum Selbstunterricht = Ivrit leVogrim Matkhilim al yesod shita khadasha

Verlag Jos. Schlesinger, Wien 1938 - 2. Aufl. [4], 107 pages. Interestingly, this book contained bi-lingual topical advertisements that serve as more than just a tool to learn the Hebrew language. See, for example, image 5 here, which refers to the (very limited number of) Certificates the British issued to Jews seeking to flee Europe on the eve of the holocaust. Countless Europeans (not just Germans) told European Jews who have lived in Europe even before the birth of Christianity, "Go back to Palestine." Many of their grandchildren are now telling Jews in Israel, "Get out of Palestine." Since they did not want them in Europe and do not want them in Israel, apparently the unspoken truth is that they would like them all in crematoria. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Trending into Maine (Limited Edition, Inscribed to John Ford)

Boston: Little, Brown, 1938. First Edition. First Edition (Arundel Edition), one of 1075 copies (this being No. 618) SIGNED and numbered by both Kenneth Roberts and illustrator N.C. Wyeth. This copy is additionally inscribed by Kenneth Roberts to legendary director John Ford: "Doubly inscribed for John Ford / with the admiration of his fellow doctor / Kenneth Roberts / Doctorhurst, Maine / June 15th, 1938." Lacking the envelope with additional plates and the slipcase (likely tossed by Ford promptly upon receipt of the book). A tremendous association between two artists who shared a fascination for the colonization of the United States, and who each in their own way molded that fascination into stories that are now timeless. Very Good plus, some fading to board edges and light toning to the spine panel, else a tight, clean copy.
