Autograph letter signed ("Freud"). "39 Elsworthy Road NW 3" (i. e. London), 24. VI. 1938.

1938. 4to. 1½ pp. To the unnamed psychoanalyst and neurologist Hermann Nunberg and his wife, about his reception in England after leaving Vienna: "We are doing very well here, much better than so many others are, unfortunately, for whom one wants to do something and yet seldom can. Our reception in London was decidedly friendly, surprisingly not only from followers and old friends [...] but also from total strangers who wanted to express their joy that we are safe and in England [...]". - "Freud arrived in London by train on 6 June 1938. His reputation had preceded him to the extent that the train had to be re-routed to another platform at Victoria, so as to avoid the enthusiastic attentions of the press. Freud was greatly heartened by the cordial welcome he received, although he wrote to friends of his sense of alienation resulting from the move and his concern over the worsening state of affairs in Europe. He was particularly anxious about four of his elderly sisters who remained in Vienna, for whom visas were being sought without success. Freud did not live long enough to know that they all perished in the camps" (Oxford DNB). - Slightly spotty; folds.

Autograph manuscript signed 'A. Einstein'. No place or date (1938 or earlier).

1938. Folio (277:225 mm). 1 p. on fine thin paper ("Pendrift Bond"). An important working manuscript apparently representing Einstein's notes for a paper entitled "On a Generalization of Kaluza's Theory of Electricity" which he wrote jointly with Peter Bergmann, and which was published in the Annals of Mathematics, vol. 39, no. 3, July 1938, pp. 683-701. Although the manuscript differs in many details from the published article (written in English), there are enough correspondences in wording, and also with respect to the equations to the section of the article headed "The Space Structure" to suggest very strongly a link between it and the 1938 paper. In sum, the manuscript details part of Einstein's attempt to construct a unified theory of electromagnetism, gravitation and quantum mechanics based on a curved five dimensional spacetime with five spacetime coordinates x1, x2, x3, x4, x0 and four spatial coordinates, one of which, x0, is periodic. Through every point it is assumed that there passes a closed geodesic given by x1, x2, x3, x4 constant. This particular approach is sometimes referred to as "Projective Relativity" and is a type of unified theory pioneered by T. Kaluza and later by O. Klein in the 1920s. Kaluza's and Klein's ideas play a key part of modern Super String theory and are currently being extensively pursued by theoretical physicists. - After obtaining his doctorate at the German University in Prague in 1936 under the direction of Philipp Frank, Peter Bergmann (1915-2002) collaborated with Einstein, as his research assistant, at the Institute for Advanced Study between 1936 and 1941. In 1942, Bergmann published a textbook on General Relativity, Introduction to the Theory of Relativity, which contained a foreword by Einstein. We understand that Einstein presented this manuscript to the daughter of Luther P. Eisenhart, Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Princeton University. - Remains of mount on verso, light browning towards edges.

Sammlung von 8 eigenh. Briefen mit U. Zumeist Kirchstetten und Wien, 7. V. 1938-21. XII. 1944.

1938. Zus. 15 SS. auf 13 Bll. Gr.-4to. Beiliegend: Weinheber, Hedwig. 16 eigenh. Briefe und 2 eh. Postkarten mit U. Kirchstetten, 2. IX. 1949-24. VIII. 1957. Zusammen 27½ SS. Meist Gr.-4to.

NEW YEAR'S GREETING FROM JOSEF SUDEK:; DRY POINT ENGRAVING

Frantisek Tichy, (Prague 1938 - A b&w drypoint engraving, image size 3 3/4 x 6 1/16 in., on a larger sheet. Housed in a contemporary metal and glass frame, with a finished window mat. Lightly soiled vellum covers the frame's edges. A very good impression. Czech photographer, Josef Sudek (1896-1976), INSCRIBED this to his friend Sampelik. According to the unverified story recounted when this etching was bought in Prague, Sampelik was the station manager at the rail yard in Prague. He had a large collection of recorded music, and befriended Sudek, who used to come to spend his evenings with Sampelik, listening to jazz. This engraving of Tichy's, was used by Sudek as a holiday greeting, and the photographer SIGNED and dated it in 1965.Frantisek TIchy (1896- 1961), the Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, created this drypoint for Sudek in 1938. It is the first graphic work by Tichy executed in engraving. It depicts a photographer, with his head under the cloth of a large camera, focusing the lens on his subject, a tailor's dress form. The plate is SIGNED in the lower left corner, with a "T" in a circle, signifying this as the 2nd state of this engraving. See, Dvorak, Frantisek, FRANTISEK TICHY GRAFICKE DILO. Prague: SNKLU, 1961.

        John Bunyan - Pilgrim's Progress 25 year Collection (325 Volumes) - Bible

325 Volumes of Pilgrim's Progress and other works of Bunyan. was an English writer and Baptist preacher best remembered as the author of the religious allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons.Bunyan came from the village of Elstow, near Bedford. He had some schooling and at the age of sixteen joined the Parliamentary army during the first stage of the English Civil War. After three years in the army he returned to Elstow and took up the trade of tinker, which he had learned from his father. He became interested in religion after his marriage, attending first the parish church and then joining the Bedford Meeting, anonconformist group in Bedford, and becoming a preacher. After the restoration of the monarch, when the freedom of nonconformists was curtailed, Bunyan was arrested and spent the next twelve years in jail as he refused to undertake to give up preaching. During this time he wrote a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and began work on his most famous book, The Pilgrim's Progress, which was not published until some years after his release.Bunyan's later years, in spite of another shorter term of imprisonment, were spent in relative comfort as a popular author and preacher, and pastor of the Bedford Meeting. He died aged 59 after falling ill on a journey to London and is buried in Bunhill Fields. The Pilgrim's Progress became one of the most published books in the English language; 1,300 editions having been printed by 1938, 250 years after the author's death.Request additional pictures if interested.

        DICTIONNAIRE ABRÉGÉ DU SURRÉALISME

Paris: Galerie Beaux-Arts, 1938. Large octavo. Pictorial stiff wrappers (after a design by Tanguy). Very heavily illustrated with drawings, photographs, facsimiles, etc. Pale green wrappers somewhat tanned at edges, neatly recased, with shallow loss at crown and toe of spine, usual light foxing, otherwise a very good copy in lightly chipped and tanned glassine wrapper. This copy is significantly better than the norm for this book. First edition. A multi-disciplinary exercise in self-explanation, drawing on primary texts for the definition of terms and tendencies, and reproductions of artworks by those who at various times found or placed themselves under the umbrella of SURREALISME. The work was compiled to accompany the Exposition International du Surréalisme, organized by Breton and Eluard, with the assistance of Duchamp, Ernst, Dali and others, and the uncommon [8]pp. catalogue of the exhibition (inevitably a bit tanned) is laid in.

Signed ""Gutzon Borglum"" and dated ""Monday 7-th 1938"". Expected folds with a few small smudges, else near fine.A revealing letter written by Borglum in response to an inquiry by Miss Sharp about reproducing his statue of Henry Ward Beecher. Borglum's response includes his personal critique of his own work, along with how he prices his art. The statue in question is showcased in Brooklyn, NY and depicts Henry Ward Beecher with ""Pink"", a slave child located at Beecher's feet, who was freed through auction by Beecher in the Plymouth Church. The letter states in full:""My dear Miss Sharp,Thank you for your letter regarding my statue of Henry Ward Richer in Brooklyn and your desire to reproduce it.That statue was produced under trying interfering conditions by the then chairman of the committee. The figure is very bad and I would not copy nor want it copied by anybody. The head is fine, I refused to change that and of course I'd be glad to let you make any use of it as far a my approval is necessary that you wish.Meantime It costs from ten to twenty thousand to create an heroic statue in bronze with suitable base. There are no plastic models left- Why not let me make a three quarter bust. I have all the material used for the statue except the plastic costs.Such a bust including the arms in Bronze…could be made completed and delivered for five thousand and made this year. I am working at Marietta Ohio … if you would like further information.Very sincerely,Gutzon Borglum""A fascinating look at how this well versed artist, who specialized in heroic monumental sculptures, both critiques and prices his own creations."

        Silent Traveller in London, The

1938. first edition. Publisher's Special BindingThe Silent Traveller (Chiang Yee) in LondonYEE, Chiang. The Silent Traveller in London. By Chiang Yee Author of the Silent Traveller in Lakeland, of The Chinese Eye and of Chinese Calligraphy. London: Country Life, [1938]. First edition. Specially bound by Leighton-Straker.Octavo (8 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 225 x 145 mm.). xix, [i, blank], 255, [1], [4, blank] pp. Thirteen plates including two in color.Specially bound by Leighton-Straker ca. 1938 (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in). Full red morocco, upper cover lettered in gilt with Chinese characters, smooth spine lettered in gilt and Chinese characters, publisher's decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine example.Chiang Yee (1903-1977), self-styled as "The Silent Traveller", was a Chinese poet, author, painter and calligrapher. In 1925 he graduated from Nanjing University (then named National Southeastern University), not only one of the world's oldest institutions of learning but also re-launched in 1920 as one of China's earlier modern universities. He served for over a year in the Chinese army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, then taught chemistry in middle schools, lectured at National Chengchi University, and worked as assistant editor of a Hangzhou newspaper. He subsequently served as magistrate of three counties (Jiujang in Jiangxi, and Dangtu and Wuhu in Anhui.) Unhappy with the situation in China at that time, he departed for England in 1933, to study for an MSc in Economics at the London School of Economics, focusing on municipal administration, leaving wife and family behind. From 1935 to 1938 he taught Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies (now School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London, and 1938 to 1940 worked at the Wellcome Museum of Anatomy and Pathology. During this period, he wrote and illustrated a well-received series of books entitled The Silent Traveller in? His first was The Silent Traveller: a Chinese Artist in Lakeland (1937), written from a journal of a fortnight in the English Lake District in August 1936. Others followed: The Silent Traveller in London (1938), the The Silent Traveller in the Yorkshire Dales (1941), and The Silent Traveller in Oxford (1944). Despite paper shortages and rationing, these books were kept in print. He wrote The Silent Traveller in Wartime (1939) and, after World War II ended, the series gradually ventured further afield, to Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and Boston, concluding in 1972 with The Silent Traveller in Japan (1972).The books characteristically bring a fresh 'sideways look' in a peaceful and non-judgemental way to places perhaps unfamiliar at the time to a Chinese national: the author was struck by things the locals might not notice, such as beards, or the fact that the so-called Lion's Haunch on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh is actually far more like a sleeping elephant. In his wartime books, Chiang Yee made it plain that he was fervently opposed to Nazism. His writings exude a feeling of positive curiosity, life-enhancing in a unique way. Some of his books have been re-issued in modern times, sometimes with fresh introductions. In this fine little book is a paragraph (pp. 126/127) which mentions my Great Uncle Sam Joseph. I shall quote in context: "Hannen Swaffer has written a passage in the Daily Herald under the title "Ye Olde Bookes." He says: "When the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association which has members in all the world's important cities, met for its annual dinner at the Café Monico in London, last night, it was grumbling. Business has fallen off; good copies of rare books are hard to find. The best specimens all went to America in the boom??" I hope that the Second-hand booksellers' Association, if any exists, would not grumble so much that the bad specimens all went to China in the boom! After all, simply to collect books is a great joy, and there is no need to buy the most expensive editions. Mr, Swaffer has also written Kleptomaniac."In Charing Cross Road," he says, "London's book-selling centre, Sam Joseph tells me, dealers have regular clients who turn up every day at one, read the books in the boxes outside, and at two o'clock, before going back to work, turn down the corner of a page to mark it for the next day! They still tell the story of the old gentleman with plenty of money and a passion for stealing rare copies. Every three weeks or so, he would do the rounds of the dealers' shops, "lifting" a book here and there. They knew him of course, and kept a check on the copies that disappeared. Regularly they sent the bill in to his secretary, who promptly paid. This suited everyone concerned, until somebody found out that one or two of the less honest dealers were sending in bills for books that he hadn't stolen, as well as for those he had?"The bookbinding firm of Leighton-Straker bound many fine editions. amongst the most notable are the signed limited edition of Churchill's Marlborough, Rex Whistler's illustrated edition of Hans Andersen, and many books for the Cresset, Golden Cockerel and Nonesuch Presses.

Japanische Gebrauchsgegenstaende [Japanese Objects for Daily Use]. Katalog einer in Zusammenarbeit der Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Gesellschaft fur Internationale Kulturbeziehungen), Tokio, mit dem Verein fur Deutsches Kunstgewerbe, Berlin, veranstalteten Ausstellung im Jahr 1938. Auswahl der Gegenstaende und Katalog Yonosuke Natori.

Tokyo: Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai, 1938 - 8vo (181 × 150 mm), pp.[i], 65. 70 black-and-white photographs. Text in German. Design by Kamekura Yusaku. Black-and-white photo-illustrated side-stapled wrappers, printed in red, text in white; loss to around half of spine, light creasing to covers. A very good copy. First edition. This rare catalogue was published in Japan for distribution in Germany to accompany an exhibition of Japanese household products held at the Society of German Arts and Crafts (Verein fur Deutsches Kunstgewerbe), Berlin in 1938. In addition to Natori’s photographs it also includes descriptions and prices of the items. Yonosuke Natori was born in Tokyo in 1910. At the age of 18 he took the then uncommon step of travelling to Germany to study at an Arts and Crafts school in Munich, and proceeded to embark on a career as a photojournalist there. In 1932 he returned to Japan on assignment and was forced to stay following the expulsion of foreign nationals from Germany by the Nazi regime. After encountering the work of Ihei Kimura he dedicated himself to establishing a base for photojournalism in Japan. In August 1933 he founded Nippon Kobo (Japan Studio) with a group that included Kimura, the actor and film producer Okada Sozo, photography critic Ina Nobuo, the designer Hara Hiromu, and others. However, Natori was a divisive figure, and after conflicts emerged, the following year Okada, Kimura, Hara, and Ina split away to form their own organisation called Chuo Kobo. Natori continued to determinedly champion photojournalism, and in 1960 became involved in a heated exchange with Shomei Tomatsu over the function of photography, which took place in consecutive issues of Asahi Camera between September and November 1960.         FÜHRER DURCH DEN BRÜHL UND DIE BERLINER PELZBRANCHE. JAHRGANG 1938. ADREßBUCH FÜR DEN RAUCHWAREN-HANDEL, DIE FELLVEREDELUNGS- UND PELZWAREN-INDUSTRIE, DAS KÜRSCHNER- UND MÜTZENMACHER-HANDWERK. [ADRESSBUCH]

Leipzig: Kuhwald, 1938. 1st printing of the 1938 edition. October, 1938. Original illustrated wrappers, 12mo (small) , 191 pages, including many, many period ads. Published just one month prior to Kristallnacht, this is a Name and Address Directory of the world?s leading Fur business district, the Brühl, and its counterpart in Berlin, both very heavily Jewish. Divided into 2 sections, one for the Brühl in Leipzig, and the other for Furriers in Berlin. In the 19th and early 20th Century, the ?Brühl? had become synonymous with the Leipzig fur and Tobacco trade. It was the name of the large street where the trade was concentrated (also including Nikolai- and Reichs-strasse) . The Brühl reached it?s highest density with 794 shops in 1928. Of these, about 58 percent were Jewish run and owned. In the period 1926-1930, the Brühl controlled about one third of the world market in furs. With the great depression, followed by the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the fur trade went into decline. For political reasons the fascist leadership limited the import quotas for goods from the USSR, such as raw fur. And, of course, increasingly, Jewish merchants in the Brühl were discriminated against and expelled. Many fled to England or the United States, where they established new fur businesses. Following Kristallnacht, which came only 1 month after the publication of this guide in October 1938, it became impossible for Jewish furriers to function. Some of the most famous Jewish fur traders included: Julius (Judel) Ariowitsch (1855-1908) ; Chaim Eitingon (1857-1932) , known as "Fur King from Brühl", founder of the Ez Chaim Synagogue and the Jewish hospital; the Frankel family; the Harmerlin Family; John B. (John [Joel] Berend) Oppenheimer & Company; F. Weiss (1893-1982) ; and Theodor Wolf (1833) . OCLC lists only one holding worldwide (German National Library) . Light wear, occational pencil scribbles, overall Very Good Condition. Quite rare and important. (holo2-125-28)

SALOMÉ. Drame en un acte. Illustrations par André Derain [with] SALOMÉ. A Tragedy in One Act. Translated from the French of Oscar Wilde by Lord Alfred Douglas and Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. With a New Introduction by Holbrook Jackson

Paris and London: Printed for Members of the Limited Editions Club, 1938. 2 volumes. Each volume is one of 1500 numbered copies. The French version is signed by André Derain. The French version features 10 gouache drawings on black paper by Derain reproduced in pochoir; the English edition reproduces the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley and includes the hermaphrodite plate. 4to, original black wrappers lettered and decorated in gray and pink, and original red cloth lettered and decorated like the first edition, respectively, in the original slipcase. 72; 106 pp. A very fine set, the books essentially as pristine, the slipcase also in nice condition and showing minimal age evidence. WITH BEARDSLEY’S DECORATIONS AND WITH THE HERMAPHRODITE TITLE PAGE. This was an early printing including the original version of the title page, which shows male genitalia on the hermaphrodite. Perhaps Beardsley's best work, SALOMÉ was the first book in which his grotesquerie was fully expressed. Ever controversial, Wilde’s play was banned in England before it even opened. The Lord Chamberlain thought the stage too lowly an art form to present a biblical subject. The play, written in French in 1892, was banned by the Censor while in rehearsal starring Sarah Bernhardt. This publishing of the work is an interesting approach to offering Wilde's play. Since it was originally written in French and published in Paris, it was decided to reproduce the French text as well as the English text. The French version was designed by René ben Sussan and features the striking pictures of Derain. The English version reproduces Beardsley's well-known illustrations, and includes four that were excluded from the first edition.
