Richard Hottelet, a member of the "Murrow boys", writes extensive and detailed letters during his stay in Berlin in 1938, anticipating the start of World War II

Berlin, 1938-1939. 7.75" x 9.75". "Archive of five lengthy typed signed letters, signed ""Dick"", with one including an autographed post script. Various dates during 1938 through 1939, most being addressed to his mother. Most all on paper stock 7.75"" x 9.75"", with the last letter on onion skin. Most letters single sided, with one letter double sided. Occasional smudges outside of margins, not affecting text, otherwise near fine. Twenty-one typed pages in total.Letter 1: 4 typed pages signed ""Dick"" in graphiteLetter 2: 5 typed pages with autographed post script, signed ""Dick""Letter 3: 3 typed pages, unsignedLetter 4: 8 typed pages, signed ""Dick"" in graphiteLetter 5: 1 typed page, signed ""Dick"" in graphiteAn exceptional accounting of the events leading up to war. At the time of the letters, Hottelet was then a budding journalist who, became the correspondent for the United Press, and by 1941 was arrested by the Germans under suspicion of being a spy. Several excerpts of this prolific, detailed, opinionated, philosophical writer include:""I am taking advantage of a momentary lull in the procession of sinister events which has been european history for the last seven days….through Hitler's idealogy, the German's became increasingly race conscious…French, british, rumanian public opinion were crystallizing into thinking that a war was inevitable….the attitude of england particularly has been that Hitler is actively behind this whole crisis…chamberlain is making a last desperate effort of personally influencing hitler to withdraw from the czech question. If this fails, the alternative seems to be war """" You remember I remarked upon the shortsighted-ness of the French and British in letting Hitler get Sudetenland (Shortsightednes not from a moral standpoint, but because Germany has right mistakeably on her side in this fight, but from a purely Macchiavellian, Machtpolitischen standpoint) I could not understand that France and Britain could suddenly act from moral considerations at the expense of their monetary and political loss""""..I should hie my carcass homeward, pack my bag, and depart forthwith in the direction of the polish border. It seems a whole flock of jews were being deported….There was material for a swell color story, and I hit it hard. You've probably seen it in the papers--weeping mothers, poignant separations, quivering grandmothers etc. …..My arrival seemed to have cause quite a flurry in that godforsaaken hole. Noone ever gets out there, especially never an American with a bag on the night that jews are being more or less surreptitiously being ejected…To make a long story short, they arrested me.""A stunning set of letters written by Hottelet in 1938-39, who was present first hand to document the events of WWII. The set of letters mostly to his mother recount his experiences from a more personal opinionated standpoint, engaging the reader such that one feels they are present alongside him. "

First and only editions of this short-lived left-leaning American periodical, celebrated for the contribution of thirteen articles and a short story ("The Old Man at the Bridge") by Ernest Hemingway. Apart from the short story and one piece on the Joe Louis-Max Schmeling heavyweight title fight in New York on 22 June 1938 "all these contributions dealt in one way or the other with the Spanish Civil War and commented on the political situation in Europe. In contrast to Esquire, where Hemingway had maintained a colloquial, almost chatty style aiming at complicity with the reader, this time the tone was decidedly imperative... As journalistic pieces they proved that Hemingway was equally able to communicate his ideas in a non-fictional medium. Actually, his pieces for Esquire and Ken may be regarded as complementing his two great non-fiction publications Death in the Afternoon and Green Hills of Africa" (Hans-Peter Rodenberg, The Making of Ernest Hemingway: Celebrity, Photojournalism and the Emergence of the Modern Lifestyle Media, chapter 6). Ken also included stunning full colour cover artwork (largely from the drawing board of Wesley Neff, who also contributed to a number of pulp magazines), striking photojournalism, and many cartoons (including a number by David Low and Al Hirschfeld). Complete sets such as this one are rare.

(Prague: Frantisek Tichy, 1938. A b&w drypoint engraving, image size 3 3/4 x 6 1/16 in., on a larger sheet. Housed in a contemporary metal and glass frame, with a finished window mat. Lightly soiled vellum covers the frame's edges. A very good impression. Czech photographer, Josef Sudek (1896-1976), INSCRIBED this to his friend Sampelik. According to the unverified story recounted when this etching was bought in Prague, Sampelik was the station manager at the rail yard in Prague. He had a large collection of recorded music, and befriended Sudek, who used to come to spend his evenings with Sampelik, listening to jazz. This engraving of Tichy's, was used by Sudek as a holiday greeting, and the photographer SIGNED and dated it in 1965. Frantisek TIchy (1896- 1961), the Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, created this drypoint for Sudek in 1938. It is the first graphic work by Tichy executed in engraving. It depicts a photographer, with his head under the cloth of a large camera, focusing the lens on his subject, a tailor's dress form. The plate is SIGNED in the lower left corner, with a "T" in a circle, signifying this as the 2nd state of this engraving. See, Dvorak, Frantisek, FRANTISEK TICHY GRAFICKE DILO. Prague: SNKLU, 1961.

        Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1938. Octavo. Photographic frontispiece. (A few leaves dog-earred.) Original dark blue cloth (some light scuffing, spine faded). Provenance: Dorothy Hamilton Brush Dick (presentation inscription from the author). FIRST EDITION. A FINE PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY MARGARET SANGER TO DOROTHY HAMILTON BRUSH DICK, Sanger's close friend and the first Secretary of the National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control (NCFLBC): "May, 1939 / To Dorothy Dick / A Valiant & Courageous Coworker in our Cause and a friend whom I love / Margaret Sanger." Sanger writes about Brush on page 417: "Mrs. Alexander C. Dick was Secretary [of the NCFLBC]. She had the old-fashioned head of a daguerreotype, but was thoroughly modern in her verve and gay personality and her quick agility of mind. Since 1916 [corrected in pencil by Dorothy Brush to 1928], when I had first known her, she had been really interested in the research end of birth control, and definitely had agreed with the then new war cry that it should be under medical supervision. It was mainly due to her and her late husband, Charles Brush of Cleveland, that Ohio had had from the beginning one of the best organized and conducted state leagues." Dorothy Brush further has added a note in pencil on page 424 about a hearing in which Sen. John C. Lehr objected to contraceptives and stated that he had six children. She writes "I was there. Mrs. Thomas Hepburn, Katharine's mother, hopped up and said 'I have 6 children too & there have always been contraceptives in my home.'" Katharine Hepburn was the first Chairman of the NCFLBC. An outstanding association copy: Dorothy Hamilton Brush (1894-1968) was a birth control advocate, women's rights advocate, and author. She worked closely with Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement, serving not only as Secretary of the NCFLBC but on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. She co-wrote (publishing under her maiden name Dorothy Adams Hamilton) with Walter S. Hayward, The American People: A Popular History of the United States, 1865-1941 (1943) and Your Land and My Land: The American People from Lincoln to Roosevelt (1943). In 1947 Brush and her husband Alexander Dick divorced. Sanger and Brush saw their efforts fully realized in 1952 with the establishment of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Presentation copies by Margaret Sanger are scarce, especially those to a close working partner within the modern international birth control movement.

Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

London: Macmillan and Co, and Johannesburg: Hortors Ltd, 1938 and 1923.. Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title. An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' – because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats.
