A revealing letter by Gutzon Borglum critiquing his Henry Ward Beecher statue, which was symbolic of the anti-slavery movement

Washington, DC, January 7, 1938. 5" x 7.25". "4 pages, 5"" x 7.25"", two of which are blank. On Metropolitan Club Washington DC letterhead. Signed ""Gutzon Borglum"" and dated ""Monday 7-th 1938"". Expected folds with a few small smudges, else near fine.A revealing letter written by Borglum in response to an inquiry by Miss Sharp about reproducing his statue of Henry Ward Beecher. Borglum's response includes his personal critique of his own work, along with how he prices his art. The statue in question is showcased in Brooklyn, NY and depicts Henry Ward Beecher with ""Pink"", a slave child located at Beecher's feet, who was freed through auction by Beecher in the Plymouth Church. The letter states in full:""My dear Miss Sharp,Thank you for your letter regarding my statue of Henry Ward Richer in Brooklyn and your desire to reproduce it.That statue was produced under trying interfering conditions by the then chairman of the committee. The figure is very bad and I would not copy nor want it copied by anybody. The head is fine, I refused to change that and of course I'd be glad to let you make any use of it as far a my approval is necessary that you wish.Meantime It costs from ten to twenty thousand to create an heroic statue in bronze with suitable base. There are no plastic models left- Why not let me make a three quarter bust. I have all the material used for the statue except the plastic costs.Such a bust including the arms in Bronze…could be made completed and delivered for five thousand and made this year. I am working at Marietta Ohio … if you would like further information.Very sincerely,Gutzon Borglum""A fascinating look at how this well versed artist, who specialized in heroic monumental sculptures, both critiques and prices his own creations."

        Silent Traveller in London, The

1938. first edition. Publisher's Special BindingThe Silent Traveller (Chiang Yee) in LondonYEE, Chiang. The Silent Traveller in London. By Chiang Yee Author of the Silent Traveller in Lakeland, of The Chinese Eye and of Chinese Calligraphy. London: Country Life, [1938]. First edition. Specially bound by Leighton-Straker.Octavo (8 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 225 x 145 mm.). xix, [i, blank], 255, [1], [4, blank] pp. Thirteen plates including two in color.Specially bound by Leighton-Straker ca. 1938 (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in). Full red morocco, upper cover lettered in gilt with Chinese characters, smooth spine lettered in gilt and Chinese characters, publisher's decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine example.Chiang Yee (1903-1977), self-styled as "The Silent Traveller", was a Chinese poet, author, painter and calligrapher. In 1925 he graduated from Nanjing University (then named National Southeastern University), not only one of the world's oldest institutions of learning but also re-launched in 1920 as one of China's earlier modern universities. He served for over a year in the Chinese army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, then taught chemistry in middle schools, lectured at National Chengchi University, and worked as assistant editor of a Hangzhou newspaper. He subsequently served as magistrate of three counties (Jiujang in Jiangxi, and Dangtu and Wuhu in Anhui.) Unhappy with the situation in China at that time, he departed for England in 1933, to study for an MSc in Economics at the London School of Economics, focusing on municipal administration, leaving wife and family behind. From 1935 to 1938 he taught Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies (now School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London, and 1938 to 1940 worked at the Wellcome Museum of Anatomy and Pathology. During this period, he wrote and illustrated a well-received series of books entitled The Silent Traveller in? His first was The Silent Traveller: a Chinese Artist in Lakeland (1937), written from a journal of a fortnight in the English Lake District in August 1936. Others followed: The Silent Traveller in London (1938), the The Silent Traveller in the Yorkshire Dales (1941), and The Silent Traveller in Oxford (1944). Despite paper shortages and rationing, these books were kept in print. He wrote The Silent Traveller in Wartime (1939) and, after World War II ended, the series gradually ventured further afield, to Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and Boston, concluding in 1972 with The Silent Traveller in Japan (1972).The books characteristically bring a fresh 'sideways look' in a peaceful and non-judgemental way to places perhaps unfamiliar at the time to a Chinese national: the author was struck by things the locals might not notice, such as beards, or the fact that the so-called Lion's Haunch on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh is actually far more like a sleeping elephant. In his wartime books, Chiang Yee made it plain that he was fervently opposed to Nazism. His writings exude a feeling of positive curiosity, life-enhancing in a unique way. Some of his books have been re-issued in modern times, sometimes with fresh introductions. In this fine little book is a paragraph (pp. 126/127) which mentions my Great Uncle Sam Joseph. I shall quote in context: "Hannen Swaffer has written a passage in the Daily Herald under the title "Ye Olde Bookes." He says: "When the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association which has members in all the world's important cities, met for its annual dinner at the Café Monico in London, last night, it was grumbling. Business has fallen off; good copies of rare books are hard to find. The best specimens all went to America in the boom??" I hope that the Second-hand booksellers' Association, if any exists, would not grumble so much that the bad specimens all went to China in the boom! After all, simply to collect books is a great joy, and there is no need to buy the most expensive editions. Mr, Swaffer has also written Kleptomaniac."In Charing Cross Road," he says, "London's book-selling centre, Sam Joseph tells me, dealers have regular clients who turn up every day at one, read the books in the boxes outside, and at two o'clock, before going back to work, turn down the corner of a page to mark it for the next day! They still tell the story of the old gentleman with plenty of money and a passion for stealing rare copies. Every three weeks or so, he would do the rounds of the dealers' shops, "lifting" a book here and there. They knew him of course, and kept a check on the copies that disappeared. Regularly they sent the bill in to his secretary, who promptly paid. This suited everyone concerned, until somebody found out that one or two of the less honest dealers were sending in bills for books that he hadn't stolen, as well as for those he had?"The bookbinding firm of Leighton-Straker bound many fine editions. amongst the most notable are the signed limited edition of Churchill's Marlborough, Rex Whistler's illustrated edition of Hans Andersen, and many books for the Cresset, Golden Cockerel and Nonesuch Presses.

FÜHRER DURCH DEN BRÜHL UND DIE BERLINER PELZBRANCHE. JAHRGANG 1938. ADREßBUCH FÜR DEN RAUCHWAREN-HANDEL, DIE FELLVEREDELUNGS- UND PELZWAREN-INDUSTRIE, DAS KÜRSCHNER- UND MÜTZENMACHER-HANDWERK. [ADRESSBUCH]

Leipzig: Kuhwald, 1938. 1st printing of the 1938 edition. October, 1938. Original illustrated wrappers, 12mo (small) , 191 pages, including many, many period ads. Published just one month prior to Kristallnacht, this is a Name and Address Directory of the world?s leading Fur business district, the Brühl, and its counterpart in Berlin, both very heavily Jewish. Divided into 2 sections, one for the Brühl in Leipzig, and the other for Furriers in Berlin. In the 19th and early 20th Century, the ?Brühl? had become synonymous with the Leipzig fur and Tobacco trade. It was the name of the large street where the trade was concentrated (also including Nikolai- and Reichs-strasse) . The Brühl reached it?s highest density with 794 shops in 1928. Of these, about 58 percent were Jewish run and owned. In the period 1926-1930, the Brühl controlled about one third of the world market in furs. With the great depression, followed by the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the fur trade went into decline. For political reasons the fascist leadership limited the import quotas for goods from the USSR, such as raw fur. And, of course, increasingly, Jewish merchants in the Brühl were discriminated against and expelled. Many fled to England or the United States, where they established new fur businesses. Following Kristallnacht, which came only 1 month after the publication of this guide in October 1938, it became impossible for Jewish furriers to function. Some of the most famous Jewish fur traders included: Julius (Judel) Ariowitsch (1855-1908) ; Chaim Eitingon (1857-1932) , known as "Fur King from Brühl", founder of the Ez Chaim Synagogue and the Jewish hospital; the Frankel family; the Harmerlin Family; John B. (John [Joel] Berend) Oppenheimer & Company; F. Weiss (1893-1982) ; and Theodor Wolf (1833) . OCLC lists only one holding worldwide (German National Library) . Light wear, occational pencil scribbles, overall Very Good Condition. Quite rare and important. (holo2-125-28)

SALOMÉ. Drame en un acte. Illustrations par André Derain [with] SALOMÉ. A Tragedy in One Act. Translated from the French of Oscar Wilde by Lord Alfred Douglas and Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. With a New Introduction by Holbrook Jackson

Paris and London: Printed for Members of the Limited Editions Club, 1938. 2 volumes. Each volume is one of 1500 numbered copies. The French version is signed by André Derain. The French version features 10 gouache drawings on black paper by Derain reproduced in pochoir; the English edition reproduces the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley and includes the hermaphrodite plate. 4to, original black wrappers lettered and decorated in gray and pink, and original red cloth lettered and decorated like the first edition, respectively, in the original slipcase. 72; 106 pp. A very fine set, the books essentially as pristine, the slipcase also in nice condition and showing minimal age evidence. WITH BEARDSLEY’S DECORATIONS AND WITH THE HERMAPHRODITE TITLE PAGE. This was an early printing including the original version of the title page, which shows male genitalia on the hermaphrodite. Perhaps Beardsley's best work, SALOMÉ was the first book in which his grotesquerie was fully expressed. Ever controversial, Wilde’s play was banned in England before it even opened. The Lord Chamberlain thought the stage too lowly an art form to present a biblical subject. The play, written in French in 1892, was banned by the Censor while in rehearsal starring Sarah Bernhardt. This publishing of the work is an interesting approach to offering Wilde's play. Since it was originally written in French and published in Paris, it was decided to reproduce the French text as well as the English text. The French version was designed by René ben Sussan and features the striking pictures of Derain. The English version reproduces Beardsley's well-known illustrations, and includes four that were excluded from the first edition.

Tre Digtninger. Lykkens Kalosker. En rigtig Soldat. Det har Zombien gjort. [I.e. Three poetical Works: The Galoches of Furtune (fairy tale). The True Soldier (one act verse play). That was done by the Zobie (poem)].

Kjøbenhavn [Copenhagen], 1938. Bound uncut and with the exceedingly scarce original printed wrappers in an exquisite recent pastiche binding of red morocco with richly gilt spine (Anker Kysters Eftf.), also preserving the original end-papers. With red super-ex-libris stamp to inside of front board. With the original ownership-signature of F.L. Höedt to original front free end-paper, with the date that he was given the book by Andersen: "12! Aug. 1938", i.e. shortly after the publication of the work. With a six-line signed presentation-inscription to the front wrapper and, quite exceptionally, a four-line continuation of the inscription to the back-wrapper, also in Andersen's hand. P. 17 with a marginal note, presumably in the hand of Höedt. Som soiling and damp-staining and some inkspots here and there. But all in all a finely preserved copy of this magnificent piece. Rare first edition, in the extremely rare original printed wrappers (only known i a few copies), with a magnificent signed presentation-inscription from Hans Christian Andersen, exceptionally written on both front- and back-wrapper and to one of Andersen's close friends, Høedt. The "Three Poetical Works" contains the first printing on one of Andersen's most important fairy tales, "The Galoches of Fortune", which is in fact his very first fairy tale for adults, here in the original version (it was later re-written for publication in Andersen's collected fairy tales 1949-50). It appeared while Andersen was still publishing his first fairy tale-collection, namely as early as 1838, and constitutes the 18th fairy tale that he publishes, predating e.g. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier". "The Galoches of Fortune" is of the utmost importance to the development of Andersen's fairy tale writing and his style of writing. It is not only his first grown-up fairy-tale, it is also the first, in which he works with dividing a fairy tale into chapters, here bound together by the galoche-motive as the red line. This highly important fairy tale was so important that even though it differs in style from the other fairy tales for children that appeared during the same period, it needed to be included in the great collection of Andersen's fairy tales that appeared in 1849-50. But for this publication, the fairy tale needed re-writing, both linguistically and stylistically, and thus it is only in the present publication that we have it in its original version."The Galoches of Fortune" was very important to Andersen himself, who mentioned it in several letters while he was working on it. In a letter to Ms. Hanck, dated March 16 1938, he talks about his "Three new poetical works"; "The first (i.e. The Galoches of Fortune") is a fairy tale and I think the most satirical one I have written as well as some of the most phantastic that our literature holds." - Clearly showing the importance that Andersen himself bestowed upon the work. In a letter to Henriette Hanck, dated February 10 1838, he emphasized that "The Galoshes of Fortune" were "not for children". As the fairy-tale is more in line with the "Hoffmann-like imagination" that we also see in "A Walking Tour" than with the spirit and style of the Fairy Tales for Children, Andersen himself also had some anxieties about it, however, and wrote to Frederik Læssøe on February 23 1938 "I'm working on a fairy-tale, but now regret these juggling acts with the golden apples of imagination".His anxieties world prove not to be completely unfounded. The work was widely read, but it also caused quite a bit of controversy. Kierkegaard, for instance, hated the work and harshly criticized its satirical features. As "The Galoches of Fortune" appear in May 1838, Kierkegaard's first work, "From the Papers of one Still Living", appears in September the same year. That work constitutes his long, sharp critique of Hans Christian Andersen, in which he ridicules Andersen and the genre of fairy tales in general. Kierkegaard furthermore denies that Andersen has any aptitude as a novelist and accuses him of not having "philosophy of life". Andersen had already heard rumours of the book on 30th August and felt martyred at the thought of what lay ahead. The dramatic poem "A Real Soldier" was submitted to the Royal Theatre in April 1836, but returned in May of the same year. THE LONG PRESENTATION-INSCRIPTION READS: (Front wrapper:) "Til: Høedt./ Mit første Foraarsgrønne dette Aar,/ Af mig du faar,/ jeg haaber at engang i Livets Sommer/ En Blomster-Flor, der kommer/ Venskabeligst H.C. Andersen."(Back wrapper:) "En Tid gik forrest blandt røde Du/ Og spotted Despoter ret af Sjælen./ Din Pen for russisk Gud du solgte nu/ gid snart vi maa Dig se paa/ Lygtepælen."[Translation - a literal one. it is written in the form of a poem, so the poetical features and rhymes are somewhat lost: (Front wrapper:) "For: Høedt./ My first spring-green this year/ I give to you,/ I hope that some time in life's summer/ a flower bloom will come/ With friendship H.C. Andersen."(Back wrapper:) "For a while You walked in the front-line amongst the Red/ and mocked despots right from the soul./ Your pen you now sold for Russian God/ I hope we'll get to see you soon on /the lamppost."FREDERIK LUDVIG HØEDT (1820-1885) was one of the most noted contemporaries of Hans Christian Andersen. Although 15 years his junior, he became a close friend of Hans Christian Andersen. He was merely 18 years old, when he received the present presentation-copy from Andersen, but he was already in the midst of his theological studies at the University of Copenhagen. He later chose philosophy, aesthetics and drama and quickly became one of the most famous Danish instructors and actors of his time. The highly interesting presentation-copy alludes both to Høegh's poetical interests, to his budding activities as an actor, and to his political observations.Apart from his university studies, the young aesthetically minded Høegh spent his youth writing poetry and visiting the salons, always fashionably dressed. He was a brilliant socialite and was considered a great and witty speaker on subjects such as art and philosophy, as well as a brilliant satirizer. He was also an eminent reciter and interpreter of especially Hans Christian Andersen. Later, as an author and director, he completely altered the way that theatre was done in Denmark. Bringing back ideas from Parisian stage art and having himself modern views on acting, he caused a revolution in the Danish theatre, which was not well liked by all. BFN 320.

one page, 13 Court Oak Road, Harborne, Birmingham. n.d. [late 1938 - Addressed to "Dear Harold" [likely - but unprovably - Nicolson], asking him to consider giving a talk at Shrewsbury School: " . . . having boasted of knowing you, I must pay for it, by asking you to go. You will find the [staff - crossed through] boys intelligent and the staff charming, and - O how they drink." Auden spoke at the school on 30 October 1938; the Auden family moved to 13 Court Oak Road on or about 17 October; so all the evidence points to a date of early November 1938. Auden letters from before his move to the USA the following year are scarce. Folded for mailing else in excellent condition.

Birds And Beasts In Africa, and The Angler In South Africa.

London: Macmillan and Co, and Johannesburg: Hortors Ltd, 1938 and 1923.. Pair of Baden-Powell association copies, with a letter of authenticity from the scout association: 1) The Angler In South Africa. Inscribed "To The Chief Scout" by H.V. Marsh, the Assistant Commissioner of Natal during Baden-Powell's trip to South Africa in 1926. Octavo, pp.190. Bound in publisher's gray cloth over card boards, titles in black to upper and spine. With 34 photographic plate illustrations, and a fold-out appendix of fish, where they can be found, and what baits are most suitable for catching them. Binding shows some bumping to spine ends, case slightly shaken, spine sunned, rear joint showing a little gauze. Internally clean, with no signs of spotting. Marsh's ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf. 2) Birds and Beasts In Africa. Inscribed to "Miss Southey" from Baden-Powell, in thanks for work done for him in Nyeri, 1940. Octavo, pp.169. Bound in publisher's cream cloth, recased with top of spine laid down, black stamped African figure and titles in red to upper, titles in red to spine. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, seven other colour plates, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Cloth binding is a little tanned, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean, minor tanning to prelims, Baden-Powell's ink inscription to half title. An extraordinary pair of volumes, given to and given by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, adventurer and founder of the Scouts. H.V. Marsh was a prominent figure in the South African Scout movement, so much so that in 1963 the South African Scout Association founded the "The H V Marsh Award for Scout Journalism". The letter which accompanies the two volumes, from the Scout Association Archives, describes The Angler in South Africa as 'a most appropriate book' ? because 'if [Baden-Powell] had a spare moment during his busy life he liked to fish'. Without wishing to speculate too far, since Baden-Powell addresses Birds And Beasts In South Africa simply to "Miss Southey", there are several potential candidates amongst the descendants of Sir Richard Southey (1808-1901), first Treasurer and then Colonial Secretary in Natal. The dating of the gift is also interesting as Baden-Powell was to die in Nyeri the following year, in 1941. By this time, Nyeri had become associated with the Happy Valley set, which included Lady Idina Sackville, the infamous Jock Delves Broughton, and a number of other aristocrats.

Aldershot: Gale & Polden, Ltd., , 1938. The Problems of the North-West Frontiers of India and their Solutions. Octavo. Original sand textured card wraps, lettered in brown on the front wrap. Map to the text. A little rubbed on the wraps, a scatter of foxing, but overall very good indeed. First published in 1938, this is a pre-publication issue, designated "Private and Confidential" on the title page. The text is heavily annotated throughout on available blank spaces, and on extra leaves paper-clipped, or loosely inserted in place. These notes takes the form of a dialogue, with the comments of Sir John Coleridge, initialled at the end - whose opinion was evidently sought by Bruce - and Bruce's red-inked responses. Between them they constitute a full, and highly-informed, private debate between two serving officers with considerable experience of contemporary British frontier policy in the region in question. Bruce was educated at Wellington and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He joined the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers in 1896, transferring to the 24th Baluchistan Regiment in 1897. He saw service in the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, and in 1901 joined the Indian Political Department , in 1902 seeing action on the North West Frontier in operations against the Darwesh Khel Wazirs. He was Mentioned in Dispatches twice during WWI and was awarded the OBE for his war services. He served in Afghanistan in 1919, MID and awarded the CIE - Companion of the Indian Empire - going on to Waziristan, MID twice, and later awarded CBE and CSI - Commander of the Star of India. He was subsequently Chief Commissioner of Baluchistan through the 1920s, and retired in 1931. He wrote Waziristan 1936-37 and others on various tribes along the N.W.Frontier of India. Coleridge was a classmate of Bruce's at Wellington and Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Indian Staff Corps in 1898, transferring to the 8th Gurkhas in 1900, and accompanied the Younghusband Mission to Tibet in 1903. Coleridge served on the Abor expedition on the north-east frontier of India in 1911-12, MID. He served in World War I, in 1916 joining the General Staff of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He commanded the 189th Brigade from October 1917, and then the 188th Brigade from December 1917, and was awarded the DSO and bar, and CMG. Following the War he returned to India as a General Staff Officer, carrying out a review of internal security measures, and of the new Indian Defence Force. He served as Assistant Commandant at the Quetta Staff College,1923-5, Military Secretary Army Headquarters, India,1926-30, and became commander of the Kohat District in 1930. During the North West Frontier operations of 1930-1 he commanded, as a Major-General, the Peshawar District. He was Military Secretary to the India Office,1933-6, and General Officer Commanding Northern Command, India, 1936-40 for which he was MID twice, retiring shortly afterwards. A remarkable document, offering a unique, detailed and frank critique of British policy on the North West Frontier in the early part of the twentieth century.a\
