Unflinching A Diary Of Tragic Adventure

New York: Funk & Wagnalls 1938 - New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1938, 1st U.S. Edition. [Viii], 159 pp. Frontispiece of Edgar Christian, 2 ink sketches, 1 map. Publisher's blue cloth with silver lettering on spine Ñ complete with unclipped dustjacket. Dust jacket is in very good+ complete condition with fading to spine - all titles on spine legible. An unusually well-preserved copy in Near Fine condition. --Arctic Bibliography 3146 Published posthumously, Christian's diary is the only first-hand account of John Hornby's last expedition to the barren ground of Canada's northwest territories. As Canada's Department of was creating the boundaries of the Thelon game sanctuary deep in the tundra in 1926, Hornby decided to spend the summer and winter there, living off the land, and persuaded his 18-year-old cousin, Edgar Christian, and a young man named Harold Adler to accompany him. It was Christian's dream of a lifetime. He was a greenhorn, but knew how to handle a rifle. They started out by canoe in June from Fort Resolution on the Slave River with six months worth of grub, flour, pemmican, bacon, biscuits, etc., traps, rifles and 2000 rounds of ammunition. What happens next is captured in this diary account found two years later by the search party that set out to find the party after they failed to return as planned. Hornby died first. Christian was the last to go. "please don't blame dear jack," were the last words he wrote in his diary. A real no-nonsense account of three men pioneering their way in the vast, untamed sub-arctic wilderness of the barren-lands. This tragic account by Edgar Christian tells how they did it, and reveals the mistakes they made. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Spanish Earth

Cleveland: J. B. Savage Company, 1938 Introduction by Jasper Wood. Illustrations by Frederick K. Russell. First edition, first issue with pictorial endpapers. One of 1,000 copies. Publisher's tan cloth, with an illustration of a clenched fist and three small airplanes to the front board in orange, lettered in black, pictorial orange endpapers with illustrations of soldiers carrying a F.A.I. banner. Fine, with only a touch of creasing to the front free endpaper, else fine. A beautiful copy. Hanneman A15a. This first issue of The Spanish Earth is one of 50-100 copies of the first edition with the pictorial endpapers depicting marching soldiers carrying F.A.I. (Federacíon Anarquista Iberica) banners. Published by Cleveland high school student Jasper Wood, it contains a transcript of Hemingway's narration for the sound track for the film The Spanish Earth. Although he was persuaded to allow the teenager to publish his narration, Hemingway protested the F.A.I. banners as well as Woods' introduction to the text, which Hemingway argued gave him an undue amount of credit for the movie's production. Accordingly, the second printing of The Spanish Earth, which comprises the majority of the first edition, contains plain tan endpapers and a statement denying Hemingway's involvement with the publication process. The Spanish Earth is the transcript of Hemingway's narration for the propaganda film of the same name, which was directed by Joris Ivens, photographed by John Ferno, and presented by Contemporary Historians Inc. The film was intended to both raise support and funding for the Loyalists cause in the Spanish American War. Notably, in the same telegram that protested the F.A.I. endpapers, Hemingway insisted that his share of the profits for this text be paid directly to the widow of Dr. Werner Heilbrun, who was killed in action in Spain.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine.

        Our Town

New York: Coward McCann, 1938. First edition. The actor Tom Fadden's copy, inscribed to him by Thornton Wilder, signed by the entire cast, annotated by him for performance, and with an autograph postcard from Wilder laid in. 8vo. Original cloth; original pictorial dust jacket (some fraying and short tears at edges); cloth folding case. Tom Fadden's copy, with his ownership name and address on the verso of the half-title. Presentation copy, inscribed by Wilder to Fadden on the half-title: "For Tom: with the gratitude of Thornton Wilder / N.Y. May 1938." Additionally inscribed by star Frank Craven, and signed by the cast. Further enhancing this exemplary copy are penciled notes by Fadden on 39 pages of the text in which he remarks on performance subtleties or provides himself with visual cues. Tom Fadden originated the role of Howie Newsome, the young milkman and fixture of Grover's Corners. 'Our Town' was first performed at McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey on January 22, 1938. It moved to the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts on January 25, 1938 and made its New York City debut on February 4, 1938 at Henry Miller's Theatre. It won the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The present copy was inscribed to Fadden after the first performances of the play, and thus connects its early life on the stage via Fadden's performance notes to the moment of its great critical reception in New York. Laid-in is an autograph postcard from Wilder to Fadden, 12 July [1942], saying that he mentioned Fadden to Alfred Hitchcock but that it seemed the director had already filled his vacant role. He writes "I hope that you and I can work together on something again when the war's over." Also laid in are a promotional photo and a Playbill for the run at the Morosco Theatre. Tom Fadden (1895-1980) had a long career, performing on stage, vaudeville, film and television. Among his numerous roles, he is perhaps best remembered as the Tollhouse Keeper on the bridge in 'It's a Wonderful Life' for his reaction to the angel Clarence's explanation of who he is to George Bailey.

City of London from Waterloo Bridge

London, 1938. Very Good. C.R.W.Nevinson. A photogravure after C.R.W.Nevinson, signed in pencil to lower margin and within the print. Printed on heavy wove paper. A fox mark in middle of top plate mark, margins a little discoloured with handling folds and marginal creases, else very good and clean. Plate mark size 185 x 225mm (7.25 x 8.75 inches approx) Sheet size 275 x 360mm (10.75 x 14.75 inches approx) I have tried to do some research on this series by Nevinson with little success. However, The Museum of London Website does have these photogravures and their originals. The image for sale on their website is titled ?Waterloo Bridge from the West with St.Paul?s in Background? and is taken after a drawing from the late 1930?s. Quote: ?Nevinson?s use of brown wash in this drawing evokes the hazy, industrial atmosphere of London during the mid-1930s. This impression of industrialisation, together with the demolition of Rennie?s old Waterloo Bridge, suggests a city undergoing immense change. Nevinson may have taken this view from Hungerford Bridge or the north bank of the Thames in the City of Westminster.? Dated 1938. Sotheby?s did have one with an original envelope. It must be from a fairly limited edition as they were all signed. But unable to find out who the publisher is, the date, which now appears to be 1938. London Museum also have ?The Thames at Southwark? oil painting and the photogravure ? The Southwark riverfront at Blackfriars Bridge? both dated 1938; ?The Thames at Deptford? painting dated 1939, there was also a photogravure made after this oil; ?The Temporary Waterloo Bridge? painted in 1939 and the photogravure which they have titled ?The Temporary Waterloo Bridge with part of Southbank?, again dated 1938.

Sketches on the Nile: An Album of 43 Original Watercolors and Doggerel Verse Documenting a Nile Cruise in 1938

Black leather album containing 54 tissue-guarded leaves of watercolor paper, of which 43 have been used. 10 x 12 inches, stamped in gilt on the front "Sketches on the Nile / Alan Hinch / 1938." Leather scuffed, cloth tape reinforcement to inner hinges, all else very good. Alan Hinch was born in England c. 1881, but was living in the United States by 1920, when the federal census documents him working in Miami as pilot of a private yacht owned by socialite James Deering, an executive in International Harvester Company. He apparently embarked on this Nile cruise as companion to his next employer, Richard Flint Howe (1863-1943), another International Harvester executive who had married James Deering's sister, Abby. Passenger manifests show Hinch as traveling in the company of a "Mr. R. Howe," and the census of 1940 lists him as butler on Howe's estate. He was clearly more than a simple servant, however, as this charming and humorous album reveals. The album documents the journey from departure on the Italian Line passenger ship Conte de Savoia on January 15, 1938 to arrival home at Banksia, Howe's custom-built mansion in Aiken, South Carolina, on March 26, 1938. Each page includes an original watercolor (most measuring about 4.5 x 8 inches, but some larger), with a related original doggerel poem. Hinch's paintings are skillful. His poetry is markedly less so, but it is clever, observant, and skillfully captures the traveler's experiences. On a visit to Asyut, Hinch writes: Assuit the place they said would be warm/ Was 42 degrees at early morn/ If the like keeps on we will have to don /Earlaps, coonskins, as at a football game./ Rode through the quarters where the natives were/ Couldn't say lived, for it looked so bare/ They called out for bakscheesh/ Both old, and young/ They thought we came only to give to them./ Oh, what a place to be born and live./ Then through the bazaar narrow and crowded/ Maybe bargains galore/ But we passed through as quick as we could./ Oddments, and rubbish in hovels so poor./ Then to the tombs too high to climb/ And round the modern town we drove/ Back on board the "Memnon" to dine. A visit to the ancient cemetery at Beni Hasan is described from the perspective of the donkeys who labor under the weight of well-fed tourists. Other subjects include the ocean liners and streamers they traveled in, local people they encountered (a dragoman, a water carrier, a little girl in a red scarf), boats on the Nile, camels and water buffalo, the Pyramids, Sphinx, Panopolis, El-Balyyana, Abydos, Karnak, Kom Ombo, Wadi Haifa, Abu Simbel, and Luxor. There are also several views of the Mediterranean coast and one of Banksia in South Carolina. In all, a charming and lovely representation of the places and time.

British Government Group of Palestine Mandate. (Set of three works).

London H.M.S.O. -1939 1938 - A set of three works comprising: 1) PALESTINE PARTITION COMMISSION REPORT, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, October 1938: 15.2 x 24.5 cm, 310 pp., 1 printed map, 12 large folding maps at rear including 2 in the rear pocket. 2) PALESTINE STATEMENT BY HIS MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, 1938: (15.2 x 24.3 cm), 4 pp. 3)PALESTINE STATEMENT OF POLICY, Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty, 1939: (15.2 x 24.3 cm), 12 pp. In the middle of the 1930s, at the edge of the darkest times in Jewish history, the British Mandate for Palestine was receiving waves of Jewish immigrants fleeing the rise of Hitler. In 1936 the large number of immigrants ensued a six month-long strike by the Arab population of Palestine. A Royal Commission was organised the same year (also known as the "Peel Commission"), of which an official report was published on July 1937. It stated that, as the recent events had shown, the Mandate was not working anymore and should lead to a partition of Palestine. The Palestine Partition Commission (or "Woodhead Commission") thus took place in February 1938, and its report was published in November the same year (work no. 1). After a presentation of the geographical, economical and financial aspects of the partition, including three different plans of separation of the territories, the conclusion drawn was that it was not feasible. A statement of the government (work no. 2) published right after this report announced a Conference to come in London, that would gather both a Jewish and an Arab delegations from Palestine. The "London Conference" thus started in February 1939, in order to come to an agreement. After more than five weeks of negotiations, no settlement had been made between the two nations, leading the British Government to make the decisions. Published in the "White Paper of 1939" ("Palestine Settlement of Policy", work no. 3), they were: that an independent state would be established within ten years, before which Palestine would be neither a Jewish nor an Arab state; that a limit of 75,000 Jewish immigrants would be set for the five years to come, and that the rights of Jews to buy land from Arabs would be restricted. Less than ten years later, the Declaration of Independence would be signed on 14 May 1948, establishing the State of Israel. These three original copies attest to the evolution of the status of the British Mandate of Palestine in the last decade before Israel's independence. The two statements are the last two White Papers to be published during the Mandate. After the declaration of independence all the White Papers were declared invalid by the Israeli government. Decorative endpapers showing sketches of classic Disney style Rabbits, Birds and Deer, presumably Bambi was in the mind of the artists at this stage. Original beige coarse grain cloth with black lettering to the front panel. Aside from some light marks to the outer edge of the cloth boards and endpapers this is a very good, bright copy in the original colour illustrated, price clipped dustwrapper showing Snow white and the Seven Dwarves on the front and two Fawns on the rear panel. Closed tears to the top and bottom of the dustwrapper spine have been strengthened to the rear of the paper with archive tape but overall a very good example of this fantastic book.         Vertrag mit eigenh. U. O. O., 9. VI. 1938.

1938. 2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Folio. Auch neuerliche Anläufe Harraps zu noch großzügigeren Konditionen führten zu keinem Ergebnis, so daß Harrap schließlich im September 1944 sich eingestehen mußte, daß es, gleich ob sein Verlag nun im Recht sei oder nicht, unangenehm sei, einen Prozeß mit einem Mann zu führen, dem jeder von ihnen so viel schulde ("it is distasteful to us, whether we are right or not, to litigate this matter with a man to whom every one of us is so much indebted", zit. in: Reynolds, In Command of History, SS. 19-20).

Notated in black and red ink with some markings in blue crayon. Unsigned. Slightly worn; creased at central fold. Delvincourt, a French composer, was appointed director of the Versailles Conservatory in 1931 and of the Paris Conservatoire in 1941. "His most important decisions were the founding of the Orchestre des Cadets and a chorus (so avoiding the evacuation of his pupils to Germany), and his invitation to Messiaen, despite much comment, to teach the philosophy of music. After Debussy and Ravel, he was one of the most ardent of French composers in trying to recapture the spirit of the Middle ages and the Renaissance, as in the Danceries." Alain Louvier in Grove Music Online.

London: Victor Gollancz Limited,, 1938. Octavo. Original black cloth, calligraphic title to spine and front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Faint crease to spine, a few spots to edges and to margins of prelims first and last few text leaves. A very good copy in the entirely unrestored, slightly sunned jacket with a few insignificant nicks, a toned spine panel with a small faint splash-mark not affecting text, and a slightly rubbed and marked rear panel with a short closed tear to the foot of the rear flap. First edition, first impression. Du Maurier's staggeringly popular second novel is today of considerable scarcity in the dust jacket. Written during the author's unhappy sojourn in Egypt as an army wife, Rebecca "was meant to be a psychological study of jealousy and was based on her own feelings of jealousy towards a former fiancée of her husband's, Jan Ricardo, but it was hailed as a romantic novel in the tradition of Jane Eyre. [Du Maurier] was astonished by the success of Rebecca?hardback copies in Britain alone passed the million mark in 1992?and mystified by the readers' interpretation of the novel" (ODNB).

The War the Infantry Knew 1914-1919.A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium with The Second Battalion His Majesty's Twenty-Third Foot, The Royal Welch Fusiliers: founded on personal records, recollections and reflections, assembled, edited and partly written by One of their Medical Officers.

The First UK Printing published by P.S.King and Son Ltd in 1938.The BOOK is in near FINE condition. Original red cloth with gilt titling to the spine and the initials of the regiment gilt to the upper board.Covers are clean apart from a tiny black dot to the spine.Light pushing to the spine ends with a little fading and tiny splitting at the spine tips.A hint of toning to the text block.Free from inscriptions, erasures and markings. The endpapers are only very slightly tanned.27 leaves of sketch-maps bound in at the rear. The very scarce First edition, being one of just 500 copies privately produced by the author. As such this remains an extremely elusive title. The battalion included the authors of two of the most famous literary accounts of the Great War, Graves and Sassoon, with the latter contributing a chapter to the present work entitled "A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action," covering the period from March 12th to April 16th, 1917, which is described as, "An early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer." Graves offered to contribute, but Dunn was not an admirer of Goodbye to all that, and declined his offer. Graves is mentioned, disparagingly, a handful of times in the text. Dunn's is an extraordinary book, in the Face of Battle John Keegan described it as "one of the most interesting and revealing books of its type a genuinely truthful and fascinating picture of the war as it was for the infantry." Compiled in diary form from the reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion, it is without doubt the most authentic account of the experience of the Western Front at Battalion level.         Great Contemporaries

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1938. First revised and expanded edition. Hardcover. This is a superior copy of the British first revised and expanded edition, first printing, in dust jacket. This edition, published in 1938 soon after the first edition of 1937, added four new essays (Fisher, Parnell, Baden-Powell, and - of great interest - Roosevelt). As is the case with the first edition, first printing, the dust jacket for the 1938 revised edition is both elusive and desirable, and the binding quite prone to sunning and dulling in its absence. Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. Neville Chamberlain, perhaps Churchill?s most vexing political opponent at the time, wrote to Churchill on 4 October 1937 to say: ?How you can go on throwing off these sparkling sketches with such apparent ease & such sustained brilliance? is a constant source of wonder to me. But the result is to give great pleasure and entertainment?? There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives favorably contrast with many of today's more polemic writers. In the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals much of his own character and perspective. Churchill's portrait of T.E. Lawrence, published here just a few years before the Second World War, might well have been written about the author rather than by him: "The impression of the personality of Lawrence remains living and vivid upon the minds of his friends, and the sense of his loss is in no way dimmed among his countrymen. All feel the poorer that he has gone from us. In these days dangers and difficulties gather upon Britain and her Empire, and we are also conscious of a lack of outstanding figures with which to overcome them. Here was a man in whom there existed not only an immense capacity for service, but that touch of genius which everyone recognizes and no one can define." (Great Contemporaries, p.164) While some of the subjects of Churchill's sketches have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. This first printing of the first revised and expanded edition is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding proved particularly susceptible to dulling, affecting even some jacketed copies. This copy retains a bright and clean binding, with particularly strong blue color and vivid gilt. The binding is square and tight with only trivial wear confined to spine ends and corners. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the binding already testifies ? that this copy has always been jacketed. We note modest spotting confined to the page edges and light dust soiling to the top edge. The unclipped dust jacket features a bright and complete illustrated front face ? the hallmark feature of the jacket ? showing only minor wear to extremities and light surface scuffing. We note shallow chipping and short closed tears to the spine ends and upper rear face, the largest being a one inch by .5 inch deep triangular loss from the top edge of the rear face. Shelf presentation is quite good, with unfaded blue print and only light overall soiling. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover.         Homage to Catalonia

The First UK printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The lime green boards are very lightly soiled. Mild rubbing to the corners and lower edges. The spine is only very slightly toned and the gilt titling remains very bright. Light pushing at the spine ends. Small bump to lower front corner. The text block is toned and there is the usual moderate offsetting to the end papers. Mild toning to the page edges. Free from inscriptions, erasures and markings. NO wrapper. A very presentable copy and in much better condition than usually encountered. In 'Homage to Catalonia', Orwell recounts his experiences as a soldier and disillusionment with totalitarian regimes. Notably, Victor Gollancz, who had published the English editions of Orwell's earlier works, refused to publish Homage to Catalonia because of its radical political stance. Instead, it was published by Secker and Warburg, the firm that would go on to publish Orwell's best known works - Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).         Showa 23-nen Shina Jihen shussei kinen shashincho :Hokushi sensen hen [in Japanese: A photograph album in memory of soldiers at the front lines during the China-Japan Conflict of 1937-1938].

Tokyo: Nakatogawa Hiroyuki, March 20, , 1938. Landscape quarto. Original dark red textured paper-covered boards, green silk ties, die-cut image of the Great Wall to the front board, together with title gilt to the upper board. Illustrated title on yellow-tinted paper, 7 colour plates, numerous illustrations from photographs, some on tinted paper stock, all leaves with tissue guards, folding colour map, pictorial endpapers. Minor edge-wear, spotting to the tissue-guards, overall very good indeed. First edition of this uncommon Japanese propaganda piece recording the opening campaigns of the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Just three copies on OCLC, Manchukuo collection in the Harvard-Yenching Library, Stanford, and Princeton. Following Japan's successes in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) tensions had intensified, seeming to peak with the conquest of Manchuria in 1931 and the creation of the puppet state of Manchukuo, but continuing to rise steadily through the 30s. After a number of provocations in the summer of 1937. Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces joined with the warlords of Hunan and Szechwan provinces to fight the Japanese. Chiang believed that by attacking Japanese naval installations and troops in and around Shanghai, he would force the foreign powers to ally with China to fight against Japan to protect their considerable investments in southern China. For three months, the Nationalist Chinese armies held out in the face of an intense bombardment by Japan's Taiwan-based 'planes and ships on the Huangpu River, but were eventually forced to retreat to Nanking, under constant harrying attacks from Japanese reinforcements. The images in this "souvenir" album show the Japanese advance through Eastern and Coastal China; the build up of materiel; the destruction of Nanking; Japanese troops on the march, celebrating victories; the aftermath of the destructive bombardments.
