        Arms and the Covenant.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1938. Compiled by Randolph S. Churchill. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt within triple fillet gilt, rule to front board in blind, top edge blue. Portrait frontispiece. First edition, only printing. Presentation copy from Churchill to the celebrated journalist Hannen Swaffer, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Hannen Swaffer from Winston S. Churchill, January 1939" and almost certainly presented on or near 8 January, when "Churchill gave a long interview to the Daily Herald, during which he and Hannen Swaffer discussed the First World War. The lesson to be learned, Churchill told Swaffer, was that in peace and war 'it is the good cause that really matters'. In the first world war the people turned on the autocratic countries, Russia, Austria and Germany, whereas in 'haggard France' and in 'war stricken Britain', the people 'were more resolute at the end than they were at the beginning'. The same was true today, Churchill argued, telling Swaffer: 'If the Democracies are prepared to die rather than become slaves and to see the loss of all the fruits of the centuries, they will remain unconquered.' If the dictators realised this, Churchill added, the matter might never be put to the proof" (Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years, 2012, p. 246). Arms and the Covenant is an important collection of Churchill's speeches, warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany. A contemporary review in the journal of the Royal Institute for International Affairs remarked that "apart from their literary graces" Churchill's speeches were remarkable because of "the restraint of their language" in view of the "blunders and inaccuracies" of the Government and for his technical mastery: "There seems to be nothing from Naval Strategy to the jigs and tools in an aircraft factory... on which Mr. Churchill is not an expert." Swaffer (1879-1962) - an almost exact contemporary of Churchill - "often wrote wisely, sometimes like a wiseacre, and always in a clear, homely style. His habit of pontificating on many subjects led him to be termed, to his deep satisfaction, the Pope of Fleet Street. He did not look the part, his appearance suggesting an actor of Sir Henry Irving's day: he wore a wide-brimmed black felt hat, black stock, high collar, dark flowing locks, and a melancholy expression. A kind and witty man, he was known by close friends to be shy under his mask of defiant self-confidence. In his prime Swaffer was said to write nearly a million words a year. He was described at a gathering in his honour as the greatest reporter of the era and an immortal of his own time" (ODNB). Also included is a collection of contemporary and near-contemporary related correspondence to Swaffer that reflect his exceptional position at the nexus of politics and social life during the 40s and 50s: 16 autograph or typed letters signed (including one from Harold Laski) and one telegram (from Lord Beaverbrook) plus 4 other pieces (envelopes etc). The outstanding pieces among them being a short typed letter signed (one page, on 10 Downing Street stationery corrected to "Berlin", dated 30 July 1945, with integral envelope) from Clement Attlee: "My dear Swaffer, Very many thanks for your kind letter. We have an immense task before us, but I believe we can cope with it if we get the right spirit of comradeship in our great adventure. Yours ever, Clem". A brief but very evocative letter written only four days after the Labour landslide of 1945 that projected Attlee to Prime Minister (polling had taken place on 5 July but the results were counted and declared on 26 July, owing partly to the time it took to transport the votes of those serving overseas). Attlee was a senior member of the British delegation at the Potsdam Conference and his letter to Swaffer (himself a "man of the left") refers, with typical humility, to the Labour victory. The other is by Somerset Maugham (one page, on Villa Mauresque stationery, dated 24 December [no year]): "My dear Hannen, Thank you for your grand elegy. The last two lines are perfect. Clever old stick that you are! Yours always Wm. S". Maugham would have known Swaffer from the latter's time as drama critic of the Daily Express. A striking association copy that links Churchill and one of the foremost British journalists of the period set against the background of impending war.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) TO HIS DAUGHTER

8 Dec. 1938, New York - Superb and touching one-page letter in Kent's minuscule hand to his 25-year-old daughter Clara expressing his disappointment that she will not be spending Christmas with him. In full: "It was about 12 years ago when, out of consideration for your mother, I gave up claiming my family for Christmas Day and set New Years Day as our day for Christmas celebration. That this gave you children two Christmases we hoped was doubly nice for you; and that it gave us Christmas--though a week later--with my children was a happiness that we planned for and looked forward to. Only the absence far from home of Frances [his second wife whom he would divorce in 1939] or me or both of us has made a New Years' pass uncelebrated as the family Christmas. All this you know. And that, knowing it, you pass up your father's Christmas for a New Year at a friend's is something that I will not forget nor easily forgive. That Frances is deeply hurt at your 'previous engagement' when after two years of enforced absence she is at last home again and eager to make a Christmas for us all, is something I have read in her face as she read your letter. That is all I know about it. I will now wish you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." SIGNED "Affectionately Father." The mixture of sadness and restrained anger is quite evident in this scarce and very personal autograph letter by one of the most famous American artists of the twentieth century. The bulk of Kent's papers were donated to the Smithsonian. Normal creases from folding, about Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Document signed

1938 - ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Document signed. Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1938. Folio, single sheet (measures 9 by 13-1/2 inches) partially printed and completed in typescript on recto and verso, embossed red paper seal. $6500.Scarce 1938 official presidential pardon signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Attorney General Homer Cummings, granting a pardon to Louis Pettofrezzo (aka Louis Fritz), who pled guilty three times, from 1927-32, to charges of "possessing and selling intoxicating liquor in violation of the National Prohibition Act." Pettofrezzo's nephew by marriage, Albert Rosellini""a young "progressive cut from the same cloth as Franklin Delano Roosevelt""led opposition in Washington state to Prohibition-era 'blue laws' and was elected to the state's senate in 1938, the same year FDR signed this pardon, serving until he became the state's 15th governor in 1957.This scarce official presidential document, signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his second term of office, pardons Louis Pettofrezzo, "also known as Louis Fritz," for the crime of "possessing and selling intoxicating liquor, in violation of the National Prohibition Act" on three occasions: in 1927, 1929, and 1932. Having paid fines and costs, and served a prison sentence from 1932 to 1933, in 1938 FDR signed this official pardon, additionally signed by his Attorney General, Homer Cummings. In 1932, the same year Pettofrezzo committed his third infraction and began his prison sentence, he married Fine Gasperetti Rosellini, widow of Seattle restaurant owner Vittorio Rosellini, whose brother Giovanni was the father of lawyer Albert Rosellini. Albert "went to work as an attorney in 1933. In that role, he forged lifelong ties to liquor distributors and tavern owners by representing them in challenges to Prohibition-era restrictions known as 'blue laws" (Seattle Times). He "considered himself a progressive cut from the same cloth as Franklin Delano Roosevelt," and was a senator in the Washington State Senate for nearly two decades before serving as the state's governor from 1957-65 (Washington Business Magazine). This official signed document reads: (print) "Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States. To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting: Whereas [typescript] Louis Pettofrezzo, an alien, also known as Louis Fritz, pleaded guilty in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington to possessing and selling intoxicating liquor, in violation of the National Prohibition Act, and on October fourteenth, 1927, was sentenced to pay a fine of One hundred dollars ($100.00) and costs amounting to Twenty-one dollars ($21.00); and Whereas the said Louis Pettofrezzo pleaded guilty in the District aforesaid to possessing intoxicating liquor, in violation of the national Prohibition Act, and on May sixth, 1929, was sentenced to pay a fine of Five hundred dollars ($500.00) and costs amounting to Thirty-one dollars and twenty cents ($31.20 [sic]; and Whereas the said Louis Pettofrezzo pleaded guilty in the District aforesaid to possessing and selling intoxicating liquor, in violation of the National Prohibition Act, and on April eighteenth, 1932, was sentenced to imprisonment for eighteen months and to pay a fine of Seven hundred dollars ($700.00); and Whereas the said Louis Pettofrezzo paid his fine and costs in the first case and the fine in the second case; and Whereas the said Louis Pettofrezzo began his sentence in the third case on April twenty-second, 1932, at the United States Penitentiary, McNeil Island, Washington, was transferred on June seventh, 1937, to Federal Road Camp No. 5, Dupont, Washington, served his term, less good time allowances, and an additional thirty days due to his inability to pay the said fine, and was released on August third, 1933; and Whereas it has been made to appear to me that the said Louis Pettofrezzo since his release from imprisonment, had been conducted himself in a law abiding m.         Chi sono, quanti sono, come si chiamano. Gli Ebrei in Italia. Tutti i cognomi delle famiglie ebraiche

A.R.I.A. casa editrice, 1938. In 8, pp. 18.
