There is some speculation that the scarcity of this publication is in part due to enemy action; the publisher was badly hit by the fire in Paternoster Row, and copies of this delicate and influential work are uncommon.

In de eerste brief staat Roland Holst aan het eind van een persoonlijke crisis en het begin van een avontuur: om zijn sombere stemming te doorbreken was hij op 30 december 1937 aan reis door Italië begonnen.Hij schrijft vanuit een Italiaanse kustplaats dat de hem toegestuurde 'teekening van de hartenbrengende en gulgebibste engeltjes' zijn gemoed deed smelten, 'als alle wolken zooveel op bibsen leken als de jouwe, wat zou de beschouwing des heuvels dan een onrust in het bloed van den stilsten heilige teweeg brengen!' Serieus: 'Ik doof uit als het heimwee mij verlaat - tenminste, het heimwee, dat niet bepaald wordt door wat ook binnen den tijd. Dát was juist de reden van mijn vlucht - ik voelde, dat ik werd uitgehold en verschrompeld'. En: 'Gedurende die eerste twee weken van mijn onderweg zijn, liet eigenlijk alles wat ik deed of zag of ondervond mij leeg en onverschillig'.'Mocht je weer eens iets van jezelf naar dit nu zoo bar omstormde oord voelen uitgaan, scheep 't dan in op de inkt, tenzij je persé geen brief van mij meer wil krijgen, want die haal je er onvermijdelijk mee op je hals'.Over heimwee staat in de tweede brief meer: 'het heimwee (daar schreef je toen over) is nu eenmaal de alcohol in mijn levensdrank'. Vervolgens over de inrichting van zijn huisje (Roland Holst vond eindelijk een spiritusstel waarmee hij 'thee en scheerwater' kan verwarmen) en over het samenstellen van Uit zelfbehoud (1938) voor Stols ('wat nog een heel wikken en wegen eischte'). De dichter verheugt zich op de komst van een dichter-vriend: 'Over een week zoowat verwacht ik Marsman, die dan een dag of vijf bij mij wil blijven, waarna wij samen naar Sicilië hopen te gaan. Het zal mij vreemd zijn, eindelijk weer eens mijn eigen taal te spreken'. 'Ik voel nu ook heel sterk, dat dit zoo heeft moeten zijn - vandaar misschien, dat ik weg kon gaan, hoewel het letterlijk een losscheuren was'.In de derde brief complimenteert Roland Holst zijn schoonzus met haar nieuwe werk, waarvan hij enkele foto's heeft ontvangen: 'ik ben er verrukt van - het is verwonderlijk, dat je op een nog zoo nieuw gebied al dadelijk zooveel talent met een zoo intieme gevoeligheid kan doen samengaan!' Het gaat de dichter niet voor de wind: 'en langzamerhand ontwikkel je 'n soort koppigheid van "we zullen zien, wie 't langer uithoudt - de pech of ik"'.De vierde brief begeleidt een handgeschreven, ongepubliceerd gelegenheidsgedicht over 'Marjolijntje', een jonggestorven meisje. Roland Holst schreef het bij zijn ontbijt en is er blij mee: 'het lijkt mij ook uit katholiek standpunt heel aanvaardbaar - tot zelfs het woord "vroolijkheid", waar een protestant misschien tegen protesteeren zou'.In de laatste brieven geeft de dichter zich bloot. In de oorlogsbrief laat hij Annie weten dat hij het van haar moeder bijzonder lief vindt dat hem de wandelstok van haar vader wordt gegund, maar dit plaatst hem voor een dilemma: 'bijgeloof is nu eenmaal (en vooral in dézen tijd) erg dwingend in mij, al speelt mijn intelligentie

      Faber and Faber, London 1938 - First Edition. ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed in 1942 by Michael Powell: "For Roy Plomley / who knows all about desert islands / Michael Powell / 1942." The book was inscribed on the occasion of Powell's appearance on the BBC radio program Desert Island Discs, where he was interviewed by Plomley, the show's founder.Michael Powell re-appeared in the 1980s and 1990s under the auspices of Martin Scorsese, and examples of books he inscribed during that period turn up with some regularity. We have, however, only seen one other example of a contemporary inscription on this title, Powell's first book.A diary-like account of the making of his classic 1937 film, "The Edge of the World," a project that was very close to his heart and his first film to be shot in the beloved Scottish Isles (the next was I Know Where I'm Going, in 1945). The film's story was inspired by the evacuation of St. Kilda, and won the director an introduction to the great British producer Alexander Korda, followed, of course, by a decades-long teaming with Emeric Pressburger and a brilliant career. A Danish guide to the craft of printing with carved potatoes, which also includes examples of stories illustrated with potato prints. Instructions show how to carve the stamps and create characters, scenes, and action by combining and re-arranging basic geometric shapes. The stories are comic misadventures clearly intended to capture children's attention. In one, a boy and a rabbit outsmart a devilish troll, and in another, roving thieves meet their demise in various ways. The color illustrations show the full artistic potential of this humble medium; the final page is a Scandinavian landscape, in which three children hold the flags of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.         Important Collection of Designs and gilted wood study for the White House Steinway

      - An important archive of assorted studies on paper and wood as well as photographs and other ephemera related to the grand piano decorated by Dunbar Beck, presented by Steinway to Franklin Roosevelt in 1938, and which remains in the East Room of the White House to this day. The archive generally in very good condition, various sizes and formats, with scattered minor tears, smudges, and creases. From the Estate of the artist. Included here are two copies of a finely printed trifold Steinway brochure ("The Nation's Second Steinway") with a brief history of the instrument: "On December 10, 1938, Theodore E. Steinway, President of Steinway and Sons, and grandson of Henry Engelhard Steinway, the founder, stood in the White House before the President, and said: 'Some five and thirty years ago we had the distinguished honor of presenting the instrument which has found its home here since that time. Now, because of your graciousness and generosity, Sir, this great distinction comes to us again. The motives that impelled this presentation are the same that impelled the first one, namely, it is a paean of thanksgiving by a family who arrived on these friendly shores from abroad and here were permitted to seek and make their homes and their lives, and to pursue their work with happiness and contentment.' President Roosevelt accepted the instrument for the nation, saying he dedicated the New Steinway to 'the advancement of music in every city, town and hamlet in the country.' Visitors will see the instrument in the East Room of the White House. The case, of finest Honduras mahogany, was designed by Eric Gugler. Dunbar Beck executed the symbolic decorations, which represent elementary American music - the Virginia reel, the New England barn dance, the ceremonial chant of the American Indian, the Negro cotton-picker bursting forth into song and the cowboy singing beneath the prairie stars. The massive eagles, symbolic of freedom, which support the case are the work of Albert Stewart. This magnificent instrument was built in its entirety with loving solicitude at Steinway, L.I., by craftsmen who believe it is their destiny to make the finest piano in the world. All those who worked on this piano sought to create an instrument which would be a State piano, one that would be at home in the White House." The White House website features a short film about the piano ("Catching up with the Curator: The Steinway Piano"), including footage of it being performed at recent White House concerts, as well as archival footage of it being played by Harry Truman. The archive features 11 original studies by Beck, of various sizes and formats from approx. 6 x 12 to 11 x 14 inches. For the "Barn Dance" tableau, there are four drawings in pencil, ink and/or gouache plus a magnificent fully realized wooden maquette painted in gilt precisely as seen on the actual piano. For the "Native American" tableau, there are four original drawings, plus a photograph of the final panel, inscribed by Beck on the verso "Hard to find an Indian dance not connected to war or religion - Crow Indian social dance depicted." For the "Virginia Reel," one drawing included and there is a further drawing depicting two figures speaking with a man on horseback, illegibly inscribed below and perhaps a discarded earlier idea. A 24 x 18 inch printed diagram of a Steinway Model D ("Scale - 2 in = 1 ft"), features on the verso an expressively drawn male nude, evidently not related to the designs for the piano, though included because of its placement on the diagram. Also included is a 20 x 16 inch black and white doubleweight presentation photograph of the piano, a program from the "Preview Luncheon to the Creators of the White House Piano" (Lotos Club, NY - December 3rd, 1938), a 4-page Steinway News brochure about the piano (including a photograph of Beck), an original 1928 graphite portrait drawing of Beck by W. Christian, and a letter to Dunbar Beck on Steinway & Sons letterhead dated Janua

Ett unikt och svårslaget dubbeldedikationsexemplar av Ferlins genombrottsbok, med författarens dedikation till Signe [Koch] på förtitelsidan ovanför en nästan helsides akvarellerad bild av omslagskonstnären Roland Svensson, och med även dennes dedikation: "Hälsning till Martin Koch från Roland S". Enkelt halvfranskt band, ngt blekt rygg med fem upphöjda bind och titeltryck i guld, främre omslaget medbundet (med en prydlig lagning a tergo). Bandet ytligt ngt nött inkl. pärmkanterna, inlagan med något enstaka marginalriss, några streck av Roland Svenssons akvarell har slagit igenom på förtitelbldets baksida. Ett par små rättelser i bläck, säkert av författaren, på s.96 & 127. Första upplagan, med Roland Svenssons tidigaste bokillustration. Det är känt att Ferlin beundrade Martin Koch, en arbetardiktningens pionjär, och bl. a. hyllade honom med en dikt i proletärförfattarnas handskrivna hyllning på 50-årsdagen 1932. Tor Bonnier hade tagit initiativ till Goggles sommaren 1938 med ett brev till Ferlin, som vistades på Möja. Ferlin i sin tur föreslog att den då nästan okände konstnären Roland Svensson, med vilken han delade stuga, skulle få göra omslaget. Goggles var Ferlins tredje och till omfånget största diktsamling och blev en omedelbar framgång, första tryckningen sålde slut på en vecka. Roland Svensson målade även Ferlins porträtt och utförde också omslaget till En gammal cylinderhatt (1962).

        Garden: A Copper Lithoplate for Wedgwood

      A steel over copper lithoplate with the design for  a Wedgwood 10in plate.  Etched with a lady sat under an arbour feeding birds beneath a tree with a barrel of garden tools to her side, set in a wavy border with two variants of the Wedgwood mark and dated 19-12-38. Image  30.5cm x 30.5cm. In February 1936, Ravilious held his second successful exhibition at the Zwemmer Gallery, which led to a commission from Wedgwood for ceramic designs. His work for them included a commemorative mug to mark the abortive coronation of Edward VIII; the design was revised for the coronation of George VI.  Other popular Ravilious designs included the Alphabet mug of 1937,and the china sets, Afternoon Tea (1938), Travel (1938), and Garden Implements (1939), plus the Boat Race Day cup in 1938. Production of Ravilious' designs continued into the 1950s, with the coronation mug design being posthumously reworked for the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. Very good, some scratches, consistent with use.

        Important Collection of Designs and gilted wood study for the White House Steinway

      Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An important archive of assorted studies on paper and wood as well as photographs and other ephemera related to the grand piano decorated by Dunbar Beck, presented by Steinway to Franklin Roosevelt in 1938, and which remains in the East Room of the White House to this day. The archive generally in very good condition, various sizes and formats, with scattered minor tears, smudges, and creases. From the Estate of the artist. <br><br><br />Included here are two copies of a finely printed trifold Steinway brochure ("The Nation's Second Steinway") with a brief history of the instrument: "On December 10, 1938, Theodore E. Steinway, President of Steinway and Sons, and grandson of Henry Engelhard Steinway, the founder, stood in the White House before the President, and said: 'Some five and thirty years ago we had the distinguished honor of presenting the instrument which has found its home here since that time. Now, because of your graciousness and generosity, Sir, this great distinction comes to us again. The motives that impelled this presentation are the same that impelled the first one, namely, it is a paean of thanksgiving by a family who arrived on these friendly shores from abroad and here were permitted to seek and make their homes and their lives, and to pursue their work with happiness and contentment.' President Roosevelt accepted the instrument for the nation, saying he dedicated the New Steinway to 'the advancement of music in every city, town and hamlet in the country.' Visitors will see the instrument in the East Room of the White House. The case, of finest Honduras mahogany, was designed by Eric Gugler. Dunbar Beck executed the symbolic decorations, which represent elementary American music - the Virginia reel, the New England barn dance, the ceremonial chant of the American Indian, the Negro cotton-picker bursting forth into song and the cowboy singing beneath the prairie stars. The massive eagles, symbolic of freedom, which support the case are the work of Albert Stewart. This magnificent instrument was built in its entirety with loving solicitude at Steinway, L.I., by craftsmen who believe it is their destiny to make the finest piano in the world. All those who worked on this piano sought to create an instrument which would be a State piano, one that would be at home in the White House." The White House website features a short film about the piano ("Catching up with the Curator: The Steinway Piano"), including footage of it being performed at recent White House concerts, as well as archival footage of it being played by Harry Truman.<br><br><br />The archive features 11 original studies by Beck, of various sizes and formats from approx. 6 x 12 to 11 x 14 inches. For the "Barn Dance" tableau, there are four drawings in pencil, ink and/or gouache plus a magnificent fully realized wooden maquette painted in gilt precisely as seen on the actual piano. For the "Native American" tableau, there are four original drawings, plus a photograph of the final panel, inscribed by Beck on the verso "Hard to find an Indian dance not connected to war or religion - Crow Indian social dance depicted." For the "Virginia Reel," one drawing included and there is a further drawing depicting two figures speaking with a man on horseback, illegibly inscribed below and perhaps a discarded earlier idea. A 24 x 18 inch printed diagram of a Steinway Model D ("Scale - 2 in = 1 ft"), features on the verso an expressively drawn male nude, evidently not related to the designs for the piano, though included because of its placement on the diagram. Also included is a 20 x 16 inch black and white doubleweight presentation photograph of the piano, a program from the "Preview Luncheon to the Creators of the White House Piano" (Lotos Club, NY - December 3rd, 1938), a 4-page Steinway News brochure about the piano (including a photograph of Beck), an original 1928 graphite portrait drawing of Beck by W. Christian, and a letter to Dunbar Beck on Steinway & Sons letterhead dated January 25, 1947, signed "Th...Steinway," and letting Beck know that "we had to take the White House Piano to the factory for slight repairs. Luckily your lovely decorations are O.K., but there are so many visitors in the White House who finger the piano and brush their buttons on it, that some day someone may make an injury to your lovely work, in which case, as far as I am concerned, no one will touch it but you!"<br><br><br />Dunbar Dyson Beck was a muralist, teacher, interior designer and painter. In 1927, after receiving his BFA from Yale University, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome award for his painting Adoration. He spent the following three years studying at the American Academy in Rome. Upon his return, he taught at Columbia University and Cooper Union in New York. Commissioned works occupied much of his time during the 1930s and 1940s, ranging from murals, including for the World's Fair and Radio City Music Hall, New York, to ecclesiastical commissions, such as St. Roses' Chapel in Sacramento, California, and more uniquely, the present frieze for the case of the Steinway concert grand piano that was given to the White House by Steinway & Sons, which received by President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt with great pleasure.

      1938. Hi, This lot is an Original 1938 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the first of the new hardbacks. 1938 and 39 do tend to be quite poor this is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year slight fading to the spine if being picky, the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front (part cup of tea) and a hexagonal mark to the bottom of the spine but still nice boards. The internal pages are fabulous, slight eeakness to the hinges but far from breaking (which is common). By far superior to many of the same year. Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

      1938. This lot is an 1938 Original Hardback Wisden. In Poor Condition. 38s are never great but this has seen better days. The gilt and hinges are restored and the spine cloth is very worn to the edges, Cheap and cheerful.

      New York: The Museum of Modern Art,, 1938. With an Essay by Lincoln Kirstein. Quarto. Original black cloth, printed paper spine label. With the dust jacket. With 87 plates from photographs. An excellent copy in the jacket with chip to head of spine extending to panels, small puncture to centre of spine panel, shallow chips to tips, closed tear to fold of rear flap. First edition, first printing, in the scarce jacket, recording the first one-man show given to a photographer at MoMA. "American Photographs holds a well deserved place at the top of the pantheon, and should be studied assiduously by any photographer attempting the tricky business of compiling a coherent photobook. It is a complex, elliptical, hugely ambitious work, exemplifying all the qualities that Evans demanded from serious photography... [it] remains a great work of art, for it showed us all - including the photographer himself - just what might be accomplished by the photobook" (Parr & Badger).
