        The Flying Dutchman

London: Corvinus Press, [1938] One of 130 copies. Flexible vellum boards with gilt spine. . Quarto. Printed in Corvinus Light and Corvinus Light Italic on Barcham Green "Medway" paper, in black and red. German and English on facing pages. Slight bow to covers, as always. A fine copy. The Corvinus Press was the very private press of George Lionel Seymour Dawson-Damer, Viscount Carlow (1907-1944) in Red Lion Court, off Fleet Street, London. It operated from 1936 until Carlow was killed in an airplane crash in 1944 and produced some fifty books, including new work by T. E. Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, Edmund Blunden, Stefan Zweig, Walter de la Mare and H. E. Bates. Perhaps because many of its most important works were done in the early years of World War II, it has been one of the more neglected of the English private presses.

München, Verlag Knorr & Hirth GmbH, 1938 / 1939. - Vollständige Ausgabe in 2 Original-Verlags-Handeinbänden der Zeit: feingenarbtes Ganzleder / GLdr / Leder im Format 16 x 21,5 cm mit Rückentitel und Deckel-Liniendekoration in Goldprägung sowie Kopfgoldschnitt, beide Bände mit jeweils ganzseitiger Frontispiz-Fotoabbildung "Der Schirmherr des Hauses der Deutschen Kunst Adolf Hitler." Band 1 mit 143 (Text) + 72 (Abbildungen) Seiten, Band 2 mit 168 (Text) + 64 (Abbildungen) Seiten, die Fotoabbildungen jeweils auf Kunstdruckpapier, mit Verzeichnissen der ausgestellten Werke (Architektur, kunsthandwerkliche Gegenstände) und der Aussteller von kunsthandwerklichen Gegenständen (Adler / Berchtesgaden - Zwengauer Marie / München). - "Warum handgebunden? Journals of John D. Lee, 1846-7 and 1859

Salt Lake City, UT: Privately printed for Rolla Bishop Watt by Western Printing Company, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. 244pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] Green cloth with gilt stamped titles on the spine and front cover. Very good. The edges of the covers are faded and lightly rubbed and bumped. There are numerous barely perceptible stains on the rear cover. The endsheets are slightly soiled, the rear endsheet more so than the front endsheet. There is a contemporary owner's name and address on the front free endsheet. The text block is just beginning to crack at the title page. The pages are ever so slightly yellowed. Number 218 of 250 copies. Charles Kelly was the first to wade into the murky water of John D. Lee. Kelly acquired the diaries form the Lee family and from Rolla Watt who was nephew of W.W. Bishop, the Nevada lawyer who represented Lee at trial. For all of Kelly's spite, he was surprisingly fair to Lee and paved the way for other historians, most notably Juanita Brooks. Volume was printed by Kelly's Western Printing.

Over his lifetime he built up a substantial collection of books (16,000 volumes at the time of his death) and literary emphemara amongst which were materials by and about R. M. Ballantyne, the Victorian adventure story writer. Quayle's own work was mainly related to the themes of collecting books but he also produced a noted biography on Ballantyne (1967) and two books of folk tales: one of Cornish Tales (The Magic Ointment) and one of Japanese Tales (The Shining Princess). These were both illustrated by the prolific Michael Foreman. Quayle died in a fall from the cliffs at Zennor Head near to his home, Carn Cobba; a house noted for its cliffside gardens.'. Housed in a custom solander box with gilt tiling. Scarce with such attributes as signed copies of this title very rarely appear on the market. Collectible.

        American Photographs (in Dustjacket)

New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1938. Cloth. Very Good +/Good. The 1938 1st edition of this seminal title in American documentary photography. A very solid copy but with a Good only dustjacket, 10% of which is missing. The book itself is tight, clean and VG+, with just a touch of light soiling at the rear panel's bottom-edge. The dustjacket though has some issues: a sizeable section of the front flap-fold is gone and both the front and rear flaps are detached and laid-in. This is an ideal "starter" copy of the original printing, moderately priced in any kind of dustjacket and still somewhat presentable. Octavo, 5,000 copies issued. Evans's crisp, epoch-defining black-and-white photos along the rectos.
