Scoop - Signed and Inscribed by the Author with the rare wrap-around band

A first edition, first printing published by Chapman and Hall in 1938. A very good+ book with some rubbing to the edges and to the spine tips one small spot to the front board. SIGNED to Elizabeth Herbert by Evelyn Waugh on the front endpaper. In the rare first issue dust wrapper with 'Daily Beast' headline to the front panel. The wrapper is unclipped and has benefitted from some restoration to the edges and to the spine. Complete with the rare wrap-around band denoting the book as being the Book Society choice. It is possible that Elizabeth Herbert was a family member of Waugh's second wife, Laura Herbert. The family famously did not get on with Waugh (to say the least), and the lack of a warm inscription would suggest that she was related to Laura Herbert. Rare signed and especially so in the first issue dust wrapper with the wrap-around band.

        Arms and the Covenant

1938. First Edition . Signed. CHURCHILL, Winston. Arms and the Covenant. Speeches by The Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill. Compiled by Randolph S. Churchill. London: George G. Harrap, (1938). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket; housed in a custom clamshell box. $20,000.First edition, presentation/association copy, of this collection of ChurchillÂ’s speeches on foreign affairs and national defense, inscribed in the month of publication to Churchill's uncle and aunt, “To Bertram & Nellie from Winston. June 1938.”All but two of the speeches collected here were delivered by Churchill in the Commons in the years leading up to the Second World War. Collected by Churchill's son, Randolph, and revised a second time by Churchill, these represent some of the best written by a man who ""devoted more time than any other modern orator to the preparation of his speeches"" (Langworth, 190). ""The finest (and most ominous) pre-war warning of Winston Churchill occurs on [its] penultimate pageÂ… Available in no other Churchill bookÂ… the last four paragraphs of that famous speech on 24 March 1938Â… summarize the theme of this volume, a precursor to the official theme of The Gathering Storm: 'How the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness, and good nature allowed the wicked to re-arm"" (Langworth, 190). With a photographic frontispiece portrait. Churchill's son Randolph was the editor of this volume. Dust jacket, supplied from another copy, with publisher's sticker on spine indicating that it was intended for the Australia and New Zealand market. Cohen A107. Langworth, 191. Woods A44(a). This volume is inscribed to Churchill's maternal aunt, Margaret Nellie Ogilvy Hozier, and her husband, Bertram Henry Samuel Romilly.Occasional light scattered foxing to preliminary leaves, as often seen. Light fading to spine. Rare dust jacket extremely good with foxing, toning to spine, a bit of wear to sticker on spine. A desirable copy with exceptional provenance.

Calendar of Annual Events in Oklahoma

Works Progress Administration in the State of Oklahoma 1938 - First edition. Stapled orange pictorial wraps with clear spiderweb tissue guards. Illustrated. Very Good condition overall. Small chip to upper corner of front cover and another on back cover that effects the tissue-guard. Cover worn at bottom staple. In much better shape than usually found as wraps are quite brittle. Before any of his well-known hard-boiled suspense novels, Thompson wrote and edited this guidebook for the Federal Writers' Project of Oklahoma. He was a Communist Party member at the time and his writing here, stylistically, is far removed from his comparatively-apolitical, suspenseful pulp novels of the pulp era.         Addresses upon the American Road. 1933-1938, 1941-1945, 1945-1948. WITH: Two typed letters signed.

1938. First Edition . Signed. HOOVER, Herbert. Addresses upon the American Road. 1933-1938. WITH: Addresses upon the American Road. World War II 1941-1945. WITH: Addresses upon the American Road. 1945-1948. New York / Toronto, New York, London: Charles Scribner's Sons / D. Van Nostrand, 1938, 1946, 1948. Three volumes. Octavo, original cloths, original dust jackets. $3250.First editions of three major volumes in President Hoover's series of Addresses upon the American Road, spanning the Great Depression, WWII and the postwar years, each inscribed by Hoover to leading editor and publisher Malcolm Johnson, a co-founder of Armed Services Editions, with the volumes for 1933-1938 and 1941-45 each inscribed, ""To Malcolm Johnson, With the good wishes of Herbert Hoover,"" and the volume for 1945-48 inscribed, ""To Malcolm Johnson, With the devotion of Herbert Hoover,"" accompanied by two laid-in typed letters signed by Hoover to Johnson. These volumes document Hoover's writings from the years of the Great Depression to post-WWII. It is a major collection that demonstrates how Hoover's ""enthusiasm for efficiency in government and his passion for reduced costs made him a vigorous, exacting, and yet tactful leader"" (Berdahl, Western Political Quarterly). The volume spanning 1933 to 1938 ""contains the texts of many of his critical speeches of the time, showing what was at stake electorally in the face of New Deal Policies… In doing so, Hoover laid the framework for what has become, essentially, modern American conservatism"" (Postell, Toward an American Conservatism, 249-50). The second volume, covering the years of WWII, includes his statement on the Declaration of War, the seminal April 1943 article, ""An Approach to a Lasting Peace,"" the Japanese surrender and much more. The final volume, which features writings from 1945 to 1948, won praise on publication as both ""interesting and important… On our list of our ex-Presidents, Hoover holds a shining place; for no predecessor has been a more anxious watcher over the nation's welfare or a more conscientious participant in activities for the good of the world"" (New York Times). Accompanying the three inscribed volumes are two typed letters on Hoover's personal letterhead, signed by Hoover to their recipient, Malcolm Johnson, a top editor and publishing executive with Doubleday, Doran and D. Van Nostrand, who served on the executive committee of the Council on Books in Wartime, and was one of the key founders of Armed Services Editions, which arranged for printing millions of free books for America's soldiers. The first letter reads (typescript): ""The Waldorf-Astoria Towers, New York 22, New York, October 5, 1948. My dear Malcolm: I have your letter to Miss Miller about the book on the Government reorganization. When these reports are filed with Congress (which they will be), they are open to any kind of public analysis and reprinting that anyone wants to do. Yours faithfully, [signed] HH [typescript] Mr. Malcolm Johnson, Vice-President, D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 250 Fourth Avenue, New York 3, New York."" The second letter reads (typescript): ""The Waldorf-Astoria Towers, New York 22, New York, May 6, 1951. My dear Mr. Johnson: Thank you very much indeed for your letter of May 1st and its enclosure. I am very glad to have that book and I deeply appreciate your sending it. Yours faithfully, [signed] H.H. [typescript] Mr. Malcolm Johnson, D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 250 Fourth Avenue, New York 3, New York.""Faint soiling and light expert restoration to jackets. A very scarce inscribed presidential collection.

        Lad and the Lion

1938. First Edition . BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice. The Lad and the Lion. Tarzana, California: Edgar Rice Burroughs, (1938). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of Burroughs’ adventure about a shipwrecked boy and his friendship with a ferocious lion, basis for the 1917 silent feature film—one of the very few works to be adapted to the screen by Burroughs himself—this first edition in book form contains Burroughs’ extensive revisions and additions, featuring a color dust jacket and four full-page black-and-white illustrations by Burroughs’ son, John Coleman Burroughs. A fine copy.Burroughs first began working on the story of Lad and the Lion in February 1914. Serialized in All-Story Weekly (June-July 1917), this is the tale of a young European heir who is lost in Africa and “washes ashore, after years of cruel captivity, in the company of a friendly though ferocious lion…. [A] palace conspiracy, an arranged marriage and a forbidden courtship” are only a few of the story’s twists and turns (Taliafrerro,110). One of his first works to be adapted to the screen, in December 1914 Burroughs was approached by Selig Polyscope Company, which turned down Tarzan of the Apes in favor of Lad and the Lion. Burroughs’ screenplay for Selig is one of the very few scripts he wrote of his own stories. Released in 1917, no copies have been found of the silent film Lad and the Lion, which was directed by successful Hollywood director Alfred E. Green. First edition, written in August 1937 by Burroughs, who rewrote “and added another 20,000 words to the original 1914 story, and it became his 50th published hardcover book” (Teuschner 235). With full color dust jacket and four full-page black-and-white illustrations by Burroughs’ son, John Coleman Burroughs. Issued with either laminated or non-laminated (as here) dust jackets, no priority established. Currey, 89. Lupoff, 264. Owner inscription with trace of small plate removal.A fine copy.

        Photograph. Signed Mat

1938. Signed. (STIEGLITZ, Alfred) JACOBI, Lotte. Photograph. Signed mat. Alfred Stieglitz. New York, circa 1938. Vintage gelatin silver print (measures 8 by 10 inches), signed on recto of mat, entire piece measures 17 by 15 inches. $7800.Vintage gelatin silver print of Stieglitz, with a large mat signed in the lower corner by Jacobi in her trademark pencil, from a photograph taken at Stieglitz’ New York gallery in 1938, this wonderful portrait capturing the warmth of the legendary American photographer whose work vitally encouraged Jacobi “to develop her personal style and artistic voice.”“The personalities whom Lotte Jacobi captured with her camera were among the most influential of their times” (Otto Steinert). This rare vintage gelatin silver print of renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz, with its mat signed in the lower corner by Jacobi, was one of several taken at his gallery “An American Place in 1938. In them he is a relaxed, untidy, somewhat self-indulgent, wise visionary” (Wise, 25). In this wonderful portrait Jacobi’s respect for Stieglitz is both profound and engagingly offhand. While crafting her art in Berlin during the 1920s, Jacobi had “found artistic kinship in… Stieglitz, whose work she devotedly studied.” It was through her immersion in Berlin’s vibrant art world and her contact with “those whose work Stieglitz published in Camera Work that Jacobi began to develop her personal style and artistic voice” (Sundstrom, 5). Jacobi visited Stieglitz not long after fleeing Germany in the late 1930s, and “remained dedicated to Stieglitz” throughout her life, once dismissing those who belittled his work by commenting: “That doesn’t tell us anything about Stieglitz. It only says something about the people” (Moriarty, 44). Here, as in much of her finest work, “Jacobi’s spontaneous approach allows us to appreciate the appeal of her subjects as singular personalities. Such a method, relying on intuition and improvisation, requires considerable self-assurance… Jacobi was most playful in her photography when the subject’s vitality challenged her to overcome the static nature of the medium” (Eskilden & Stein). Wise, 112. White 145. From the estate of Lotte Jacobi.A fine vintage print, with scarce signed mat.

Original black cloth lettered in white to spine, preserved in the original black dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-338 + [i]; with a few simple sketches in the text by the author; externally and internally fine and clean with a slightly blistered early bookplate to front pastedown, protected by a near fine, and exceptional, unclipped dustwrapper (8s. 6d.) in rich black with none of the usual toning to the spine, 2 short closed edge tears (longest 10mm), and a couple of very small nicks to head with one corresponding tiny area of loss (5mm wide by 1mm deep); extremely scarce in this condition in such a bright jacket. First edition. A classic of children's literature, described in Carpenter & Pritchard's Oxford Companion to Children's Literature as "one of the finest children's books of its period". White weaves an enthralling tale around a few lines from Malory's Morte d'Arthur, describing the life of the boy Wart in the castle of Sir Ector, in medieval England. He and Kay, Sir Ector's son, are given a tutor, Merlyn, who takes Wart on adventures, transforming him into various creatures to allow him to experience life outside the human. The boy subsequently reveals his true identity as King Arthur when he draws a sword fixed magically in a stone.

        Stars to Windward

A very good minus copy of the first edition, first printing, in a good plus dust jacket. Inscribed by the authors. Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1938.Book's spine has a 1/8 inch closed tear at the top. Mild dampstain on lower right/left corners of most pages. Previous owner's inscription on rear free endpaper. Hinges are tight and strong. The unclipped, mylar-covered dust jacket has edge chipping and small missing portions at top and bottom of spine (see photo). Authors' inscription on front free endpaper appears to read: "To Brenay C Itery {?} from three salts -- three dogs who love you -- Bruce, Sher & Tethai". Inscription appears to have been written by Bruce Fahnestock. The book was closed before the ink had dried and thus ink blotted on to the front endpaper and fold of jacket cover (see photos). The end papers show a map of voyage. Previous owner's penciled inscription on rear free end paper (see photo). The book tells the true story of the Fahnestock brothers, Bruce age 22 and Sheridan age 21, who set sail in 1935 for the South Pacific in their sixty-five-foot schooner Director. The "Fahnestock South Seas Expedition," as their adventure was known, made ethnographic studies of Pacific cultures, discovered the unknown stones of Ndakunimba in Fiji, dove for pearls and dodged poison arrows in the jungles of the Big Nambas. When World War II broke out the brothers served in the U.S. Army's Small Ships Section. This collection of sailboats, trawlers and freighters, which inspired the film The Wackiest Ship in the Army, ferried troops and supplies into battle. Sheridan survived the war, but Bruce, while aboard a fishing trawler, was killed in 1942 when an American aircraft mistakenly attacked the vessel.
