Dörfler.Anton
Nürnberg, 24.11.1937 DIN A4. Original Brief in Tinte von Anton Dörfler an Hanna Röhr, ein Blatt, zweiseitig beschrieben. - Der Brief ist datiert: Nürnberg, Winklerstr. 33, den 24.XI. (19)37 und trägt die Anrede: "Liebe Hanna Roehr!" (Autorin u. a. von: "Frühzeit deutscher Dichtung". [Click Below for Full Description]

Eckartshausen, Karl von
Shanghai: Slovo, 1937. First edition thus. Second edition, with a facsimile title page of the 1803 edition published by the Imperial Printer in St. Petersburg (translated by Aleksandr Labzin). Octavo (20 × 14 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 71 pp. Wrappers very slightly dust-soiled; owner inscription inside front wrapper; else very good. The scarce third edition of this Russian translation of part of "Die wichtigsten Hieroglyphen für's Menschenherz," a work by the German Catholic mystic Karl von Eckartshausen (whose first name initial is here and in the original edition erroneously transliterated). This translation by A. F. Labzin first appeared in 1803 and again in 1817. An example of Russian émigrés' turn to mysticism in search for answers to contemporary problems. A new one-page preface states: "This book was apparently written in response to the trend of denying spirituality and the interest in positivistic knowledge which already began at the time [in 1803]... Let this reprint once again go out into the world as a White warrior to continue the fight with dark powers. After all, books are now the same as warriors! The battle is waged everywhere." The book also played an important role in Masonic circles of the Russian emigre community. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at Madison-Wisconsin and Princeton.

[Pushkin centenary]
Riga, Daugavpils, and Liepaja: Puskina Komiteja, 1937. Very Good. Lithographed posters in two colors, in Latvian; 91 × 60; 94 × 60; and 99 × 66 cm. Faint horizontal and vertical fold lines. The celebration of the centenary of Alexander Pushkin's death in 1937 by the Russian diaspora would become one of the biggest symbols of its effort to uphold Russian culture and values in exile. An international phenomenon, the centenary resulted in special issues of journals and newspapers, illustrated editions of Pushkin's works and Pushkiniana, as well as a host of lectures, readings, musical and theatre performances. These three posters advertise a representative sampling of such events, organized under the auspices of the Pushkin Committees of Daugavpils, Liepaja, and Riga, the three most populous cities of Latvia. The production of such posters in Latvian and in the provinces speaks to the high degree of identification of Latvians with Russian culture and with the large émigré community in Latvia of the 1930s.

KITAO Harumichi
1937. 20 volumes (complete). Numerous plans, architectural drawings, and photographic illustrations. Text in Japanese and English. 4to. Original decorated boards in glassine jackets and slipcases. Overall a close to fine set. Tokyo, Koyosha, Showa 10-12, i.e. 1935- Kitao Harumichi (1896-1973) was born in Osaka. His father specialized in the construction of temple buildings which clearly influenced his future path: Having studied architecture at the Tokyo Advanced Institute of Technology (Tokyo Koto Kogyo Gakko) Kitao opened his own office in Marunouchi in 1925. In the late 20s he moved to Kamakura where most of his projects were built. At a time when most architects aspired towards modernist architecture using western methods and styles, Kitao was engaged with traditional Japanese building styles and techniques. The present is his first publication giving an overview of the Sukiya style and its adaptation to modern needs. Sukiya is an elegant style of domestic architecture which was developed in connection with the tea ceremony. Initially it was the domain of those with power and money, but in the early 20th century it also became popular with the new prosperous middle class. Vol. 1 (The Higashiyama & Momoyama periods); 2 (The Tokugawa period - 1st Part); 3 (The Tokugawa period - 2nd Part); 4 (The Meiji & Taisho periods); 5 (A selection of Sukiya-zukuri homes from various schools); 6 (Sukiya homes for feudal lords, poets and scholars); 7 (Sukiya homes for tea masters); 8 (Gardens and lighting of Sukiya homes); 9 (Gardens in detail); 10 (Ponds); 11 (Modern Sukiya homes); 12 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eckartshausen, Karl von
Slovo, Shanghai 1937 - Second edition, with a facsimile title page of the 1803 edition published by the Imperial Printer in St. A new one-page preface states: "This book was apparently written in response to the trend of denying spirituality and the interest in positivistic knowledge which already began at the time [in 1803]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
