(Roosevelt, Eleanor) Roosevelt, Eleanor
Washington, D.C., 1937. 1p. with postscript in holograph, on White House letterhead. 8vo. Old folds, else fine. 1p. with postscript in holograph, on White House letterhead. 8vo. "I HOPE THAT WHEN 1940 COMES I CAN BE A PRIVATE CITIZEN" Described as a "friendly, though not very close, acquaintanceship," Eleanor Roosevelt and Louise Lazell, none the less, carried on regular correspondence between 1933 and at least 1941. In this letter, written during FDR's second term, Eleanor Roosevelt hints at her desire to be free of her role as first lady when the term is over. Reading: "Thank you very much for your letter, but I certainly have no desire to lead anything, except as I get involved in things which I cannot avoid! [Exclamation mark in holograph.] You are most kind to feel that I have so much influence and I hope that when 1940 comes that I can be a private citizen again and entirely off the record." Postscript in holograph, reading: "Your last letter came t-day & I will write Mrs. Jones" At Eleanor Roosevelt's behest, Louise Lazell was hired as a speech writer for the women's division of the Democratic National Committee in 1935. She was later employed at the Good Neighbor League, which was incorporated in 1936, to aid in the re-election campaign of President Roosevelt by emphasizing social and economic progress achieved under the New Deal, before being hired by Ellen Woodward, head of the Women's and Professional Division of the Federal Writers Project, as a Policy Reader, where she devoted herself to censoring actual or potential Communist propaganda, particularly in the W … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sotheby & Co. (London)
London, Sotheby & Co., 1937. (25.5 cm), 206 pp., 38 leaves of plates (2 plates in colour, some folding). Lots numbered 1-1478. Morocco-backed boards, a collector's binding (original wrappers bound-in). - Contains an extensive collection of the works of William Blake, numerous bindings from the library of Sir Thomas Wotton, a complete run of the Daniel press, and illuminated manuscripts. Moss was especially interested in English bindings of the sixteenth century and he wrote and himself printed books on the bindings executed for Robert Dudley and for Wotton. Most of the Blake rarities were bought by Rosenbach; "the Duke of Rutland, who was present, gave £215 for a copy of the Bible... bound for Matthew Parker (1504-75), Archbishop of Canterbury, in his private bindery at Lambeth" (saleroom report, in The Times, London, 3 March 1937, p.17). Two English bindings were bought for the Victoria & Albert Museum Library: one binding, on a folio Greek Testament of 1550, is decorated by gilt strapwork ornament and painted arms of Edward VI (now Special Collections, Drawer 20, catalogued as a Parisian binding by Wotton's Binder B); the other was made in the bindery of the religious community at Little Gidding, Huntingdonshire (Special Collections, Drawer 17a). Cf. Strickland Gibson, "Colonel William Moss" in Bodleian Library Record, volume 5 (1955), pp.156-166. ¶ Fine, well-presented copy. No Price list.

Very good, clean copy complete with the scarce typographic d/w that discusses T.E. Lawrence. Goff, Ivan (screenwriter); Henry Blanke (supervisor)
Warner Brothers, Burbank, CA 1937 - Temporary draft script for an unproduced film called "The Great Lie," written by Ivan Goff under the supervision of Henry Blanke. Not to be confused with the 1941 Emund Goulding film starring Bette Davis. Owner name in holograph pencil on the front wrapper. File Copy, rubber-stamped on the front wrapper.Set in England, a prolific playwright is accused of murder, and only the mysterious woman at the scene of the crime can prove his innocence. If the woman wasn't of nobility, the playwright could easily give her name as an alibi. Intent on maintaining silence, an in-law of the mysterious woman poses as the playwright's alibi. To avoid scandal, the playwright and the new "alibi" are married in a rush, and the woman has second thoughts, ultimately discovering her true passions for the playwright.Ivan Goff (1910-1999) was a house screenwriter for Warner Brothers, his first film credit being the Curtis Bernhardt film, "My Love Came Back" (1940). Prior to this, Goff was a staff writer at Republic Pictures, and this script would mark perhaps his earliest entry with Warner, even though the film went unproduced. Notably, Goff also created the television series, "Charlie's Angels" (1976-1981), writing over 100 episodes. His other TV credits include "The Rogues," "Mannix," "Logan's Run," and "Nero Wolfe."Gray titled wrappers, noted as TEMPORARY on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 32. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, dated 12/3/37, with credits for screenwriter Goff and supervisor Blanke. 177 leaves, with l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stout, Rex Rex Todhunter (1886-1975)
Farrar and Rinehart, Inc, New York and Toronto. [iv]+298+[5 introducing The Rubber band pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound original publisher's gray cloth, front cover and spine printed with red, rear cover blank in original second printing jacket. (April 2006, Firsts) First edition which has the publisher's monogram logo on the copyright page. The Red Box is the fourth Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout. Prior to its first publication in 1937 by Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, the novel was serialized in five issues of The American Magazine (December 1936 – April 1937). Adapted twice for Italian television, The Red Box is the first Nero Wolfe story to be adapted for the American stage. Wolfe and Archie investigate the death of a model who ate a piece of poisoned candy. One of the suspects begs Wolfe to handle his estate and especially the contents of a certain red box. Wolfe is at first concerned about a possible conflict of interest, but feels unable to refuse when the man dies in his office before telling Wolfe where to find the red box. The police naturally think that he told Wolfe somewhat more before dying. This novel presents the series' first instance of a murder taking place in Wolfe's office. Condition: Spine leaning slightly with shallow ridge down the back-strip; back-strip faintly dulled; corners gently bumped; spine ends, corners and joints lightly worn. Text block sagging very slightly; binding a little shaken; a few faint splashed to the top stain; end-papers lightly discolored; faint marginal foxing to first few leaves. Jacket spine panel lightly dull … [Click Below for Full Description]
