        A Long Way From Home

New York: Lee Furman, 1937. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first issue binding. Octavo. Original yellow textured cloth with red and orange filaments, bronze and black foil labels. Slight wear at the spine ends, very good or better in attractive, very good Aaron Douglas-illustrated dustwrapper with some splitting at the front spine fold and small nicks and tears. McKay's recitation of his experiences during his self-enforced exile abroad, published upon his return to Harlem. This is the publisher's file copy, signed by McKay and many of the guests at that dinner and publication party including the creator of the jacket art Aaron Douglas, his wife, Alta Douglas, author and Civil Rights pioneer Walter White, journalist (and cousin of Chester Himes) Henry Lee Moon, Socialist and author Max Eastman, Civil Rights figure Roy Wilkins, author Mary Graham Bonner, Faith Maris Loving, Louis T. Wright, Corinne Wright, Nathan Hale, Alice Thomas, Edna Thomas, Mollie Lewis, New York Times writer, author and music critic Ross Parmenter, author Vincent McHugh, Ted and Miriam Poston, Civil Rights pioneer Hubert T. Delany, and about 35 others.According to Wayne F. Cooper in Claude McKay, Rebel Sojourner in the Harlem Renaissance. A Biography: "Despite his self-enforced isolation, McKay never lacked friends in Harlem, and after completing A Long Way from Home, he began to be more actively involved in the social and intellectual life of the Harlem community. In February his reemergence received a big boost with the appearance of A Long Way from Home. On May 4, 1937, Lee Furman hosted a reception and dinner for McKay at Sardi's for which invitations were extended to many of McKay's friends and acquaintances in Harlem and New York literary circles. After all he had experienced since his return to the United States, his dinner at Sardi's must have been for McKay a sweet triumph. He had dedicated A Long Way from Home 'To My Friends Everywhere', and truly, despite his occasional outbursts of ill-temper and spite, he did appreciate them. They had, he realized, had made it possible for him to continue his literary career."Provenance: from the files of publisher Lee Furman / Sheridan House. A significant and iconic copy.

März 1832 in Weimar. TOURIST LIBRARY: A Complete Set of Forty [40] Volumes. [Individually Bound in Or

[Tokyo 1937-42].Stiff wrs.,color paste-on, many color & b.w. plates, complete set 40 vols.,a few minor blemishes, several in glassine dj., 3 vols. re-backed, else as publisher issued a nice set, mixed dates, all solid & firm copies.40 VOLUME SET *** *** *** . . A SUPERB COMPLETE SET OF 40 INDIVIDUAL MONOGRAPHS . . . ON ALL ASPECTS OF JAPAN, ART & CULTURE . . . EXCELLENT PRIMARY RESOURCE BY LEADING SCHOLARS & EXPERTS . . . A FASCINATING PRE-WAR SET PUBLISHED FROM 1934-1942 . . . COMPLETE AS ISSUED, EACH UNIFORMLY BOUND . . *** THE SUBJECT & THE SET: This set was published by the Board of Tourist Industry, under the sponsorship of the Japanese Government Railways system. . The Japanese government, in an effort to attract foreign visitors to come to and tour Japan, serially produced this group of exceptionally scholarly, accurate and beautifully illustrated monographs. The government sought out the leading exponents and eminent scholars to introduce all aspects of Japanese art, culture, history, customs and traditions to the western world. The results were an impressive success in publishing nicely illustrated, uniform size volumes, each with a color illustration pasted on to the front cover. . The complete set consists of 40 separates monographs [each on a specific subject], all issued prior to WWII, the last five volumes were issued at the start of WWWII in 1941-1942. . Many of these eminent scholars & authors continued to write more exhaustive works on their specialty subjects after the war. . *** NOTE ON THE ROMANIZATION OF PRE-WORLDWAR II JAPANESE: Note the Romanization of Japanese in the 1930's. In an effort to avoid 'western culture' during the pre-World War II period, Japan abandoned the "Hepburn" method of Romanization of Japanese, in favor of a 'native' method which turned out to be very difficult for westerners to read. After the war, Japanese returned to the 'standard' way to Romanize. The below names are spelled in the old [strange] way. . *** THE COMPLETE LIST OF ALL TITLES & AUTHORS: This set is seldom found complete. . 1. TEA CULT OF JAPAN. Yasunosuke Fukukita 2. Each volume is nicely translated into English. . *** ILLUSTRATIONS: COLOR WITH BLACK & WHITE: Each book has a color front cover printed illustration tipped down. There is also a color frontispiece in each/most volumes, followed by profuse b.w. collotype photographs. . During the mid-1930's the world was beginning to illustrated printed articles like books, magazines and newspapers with more and better illustrations or photographs. Color printing was still in its infancy and was used sparingly being a complex printing process and costly. . Some of the later issues had color photos and folding color illustrations. . *** MIXED EDITIONS/MIXED DATES: This set consists of 'mixed' dates, some are First Editions, others are second or later editions, however all are early pre-1940, except those published after that date. . *** CONDITION: The set is bound in the original stiff wrappers, some are trimmed to the edge of the contents size, others are deckle edge, issued in varied format. By and large each volume is clean, some in the original glassine dust jacket [therefore the covers are exceptionally clean], a few may have some usual: minor stains, dusty covers, a few with former owner's name/ signatures, old Hanko [seal/chop], names or rubber stamped names, penned numbers on the spine or other places, a bit of minor mild foxing here or there. Some may have their spines reinforced with another stiff paper to keep their binding firm, other minor and typical issues for books 82+ years old. . *** COLOR SCANS POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE: Please review the color scans posted to our website, some volumes may look a bit "dull" due the original "glassine" dust jackets. These are 'stock' photos for individual volumes, the 'title.jpg' is an actual photo of this set, the balance are from copies we have had in the past to give you the 'flavor' of each volume and its appearance. Please ask questions. *** .

A worn copy with a tape repair to the binding and dampstaining to the leading edges of both the front and back boards, internally the book is about fine, in near fine dustwrapper with a couple of small nicks and tears at the extremities. The jacket was almost certainly "married" to the book at some point, although not during our stewardship. Why do we have it you ask? Because this copy is very nicely Inscribed by the author to his parents: "To my dear Mother and Father -- Alan." Prospectors Bug Eye and Hank embark on a series of adventures.

        STUDIES IN HAND-READING

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1937 - Large 8vo. Original blue cloth in printed dust-jacket. Very good in like DJ. Jacket spine mildly toned. Light edgewear. Unclipped. Cloth a bit soiled here and there. Some faint foxing to prelims. Else bright, sound, and clean. pp. xvi, 153, [1]. with errata slip bound in between xiv and xv. Rare work from the pioneering psychoanalyst. Wolff fled Germany (where she was friends with Walter Benjamin) in 1933 for France after the Nazi's took power. There she met Ravel, Duchamp, Man Ray, and others. She ultimately settled in London, however, where with the help of Aldous Huxley, she undertook this book to raise cash to support herself. Huxley provides an admiring introduction; Man Ray a frontis of the author from his photo. Includes numerous plates showing the hand-prints of many of her friends and their circle: Huxley, Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Max Ernst, Balthus, Cecil Beaton, Ravel, Artaud, Breton, Nijinsky, John Gielgud, and others - along with Wolff "readings" of each. Palmistry and chiromancy enjoyed a popular resurgence during the uncertain and tumultuous years of the Depression and outbreak of the War. And Wolff was one of its most respected proponents, taking a decidedly scientific approach to a decidedly questionable pastime. She subsequently went on to write several important works on homosexuality and she remains an important figure in gay history. Translated from the German by O.M. Cook. Very scarce, especially in jacket. This edition printed from the London plates (Chattam, 1936). [Bromer B46.1.2]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Photographie n'est pas L'Art

1937 - MAN RAY. La Photographie n’est pas L’Art. [Paris]: Éditions GLM, 1937. Slim octavo, 17 loose leaves in original flexible blue cloth portfolio, original black die-cut wrapper. $5800.First edition of this landmark treatise, with 12 full-page halftones of Man Ray’s distinctive photographs, "regarded by some as amongst the greatest of the 20th century" (Parr & Badger).Jean Cocteau called him "the poet of the darkroom." "It was with Man Ray’s arrival in Paris in the summer of 1921, when Dada was at its height, that photographic experimentation, temporarily leaderless after the disastrous war, took a decisive new direction" (Frizot, 442). "Man Ray’s work introduced a particular note [to Dadaism], since he used photography and recognized early on that this medium could reproduce the effects of object-based art in two-dimensional form. Photography was in a position to preserve the ordinary and to unleash surreal effects" (Icons of Photography, 26). "Although he incorporated photography into his Dadaist practice, much of his photographic activity was given over to conventional portrait and fashion commissions. This rankled with him, and ‘photography is not an art’ was a constant theme in his work. La Photographie n’est pas L’Art is one of the most enigmatic yet advanced of all his books It can be taken as a summation of his experiments in photography, and might be said to be his photographic swansong" (Parr & Badger, 108-09). With text by André Breton. See Roth, 80-81, 86-87. Interior and images fine. Only light sunning to cover through aperture in wrapper. A fine copy. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition]
