La Galerie Historique du Palais de l'Air à l’Exposition de 1937

Paris 1937 - A scarce, beautiful commemorative souvenir of the aviation pavilion at the 1937 Paris World Exposition and of French aviation up to that point. Oblong folio, 31.5 by 41.5 cm. 16 photographic plates (mostly photographs of artwork), each on a heavy card, and each protected by tissue guards. Scarce. OCLC has listing for this book, but notes no instituional holdings. The pavilion celebrated French inventors, aviators and manufacturers, with nary a nod to even the Wright Brothers. The historical paintings begin with the launch by the Montgolfiers of their balloon in 1783, and figures honored include Francois Ader, who managed to get a machine heavier than air off the ground in 1897, Eiffel, Henri Farman, Bleriot, Francois Garros, Pegoud, etc. And of course the war pilots from the First World War received a great amount of attention. Be that the exhibit was chauvinistic, it is undeniable that the large panels were unquestionably dramatic and striking, with not a few depicting planes flying over colonies with awed natives looking up. The final plate in the album shows a rendering of the then new airport at Le Bourget, which opened in November of that year. Another plate reproduced four photos of the French airplanes on display in the Palace. The paintings reproduced on the other plates are, it should be pointed out, all representational artworks, and not the abstractions produced by artists such as Sonia and Rober Delaunay, whose work was also on display in the pavilion. Hardcover. Pebbled cloth. (Faux leather). Screws used to bind boards. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

L'Incoronazione di Poppea [no title issued with this facsimile] (Facsimile of manuscript It.Cl.4.N.439 della Biblioteca Nazionale di S. Marco in Venezia)

(Milano): (Fratelli Bocca). Very Good+. 1937. Facsimile. Hardcover. 108 ff. & colophon pages; An oblong quarto volume bound in full brown morocco leather, elaborate decorative tooling around the edges of the covers and all over flat spine, lightly and irregularly gilt, in imitation of the mid-17th century original, edges of the leaves gilt and gauffered. This is a rare and special facsimile -- one of five copies printed in 1937 -- of one of the two known early musical scores of one of the most important operas -- Claudio Monteverdi's masterpiece: L'incoronazione di Poppea. There are still unknown features about this landmark opera's history and Monteverdi's intentions for its performance. "L'incoronazione di Poppea" was first performed at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, as part of the 1642–43 carnival season; and while we know the opening date of the carnival, the date of the first performance of "Poppea" is not known. Remarkably, there is documentary proof of an early revival of L'incoronazione, in Naples in 1651. The survival of any work from this period years after a first production (and after Monteverdi's death in 1643) is most unusual. This manuscript score was rediscovered in Venice in 1888, and performances throughout Europe slowly multiplied from that point forward. This manuscript score entered the Biblioteca Nazionale di S. Marco in Venezia (shelf mark Cl.4 - N.439) -- as part of the large and important collection of books and manuscripts donated as the legacy of Girolamo Contarini (1770-1843). Most likely, it had been one of the 120 musical codices which once belonged to the Attorney Marco Contarini (1632 - 1689), a passionate lover of music. The 1888 "rediscovery" refers to the date of publication of scholar Taddeo Wiel's 'I codici musicali contariniani del secolo XVII della R. Biblioteca di San Marco in Venezia illustrati da dr Taddeo Wiel." [Venezia: Fratelli Visentini, 1888.] To say that this facsimile is made with care is a significant understatement. There are 108 leaves, with the score on staves appearing on both versos and rectos of the leaves. The first - "Prologo" is trimmed at the bottom (like the original); the verso of the leave marked "108" is blank. There is only one printed page in this volume -- the colophon at the end, which states that the production was finished on 20 December 1937 by the Casa Editrice Fratelli Bocca, Milano. The edition consisted of 300 numbered copies, with the specific note that copies numbered 1-5 were specially bound - ( "La tiratura e` di soli 300 esemplari numerati da 1 a 300. Gli esemplari da 1 a 5 sono presentati in elegantissime artistiche legature"). Indeed, this copy is press-numbered "5." (The remaining 295 copies were issued by Fratelli Bocca in marbled boards and dated 1938, with a 16 pp. "Introduzione di Giacomo Benvenuti.") This specially bound copy, one of only five, remains as it was issued -- with neither title page nor the introductory text. See OCLC Number: 638299219 [the regular 295 copies are represented by OCLC Number: 4231806]. Yale's Beinecke Music Library has another of the special copies, [Esemplare N. 2. Binding stamped: Ernest Newman. From the Albi Rosenthal Collection of Monteverdi and the birth of opera. Yale also has copy n. 21 of the "regular" issue]. The "other" manuscript score, usually called the "Naples" manuscript, was discovered in 1930, and is preserved in the Conservatorio di Musica S. Pietro a Majella -- MS Rari 6.4.1). The long-lived composer Monteverdi wrote one of the earliest operas, 'L'Orfeo' -- but most modern critics would agree that L'incoronazione di Poppea was the culmination of Monteverdi's achievement, a benchmark in the transition between Renaissance style in music and the Baroque. "Poppea" is based on historic figures, rather than mythological characters. It combines scenes of tragedy, comedy and romance; and it concentrates on its main characters, with a less prominent role for the chorus -- all firsts for opera. And while it has been the subject of almost continual study and speculation by musicologists since this early manuscript score was rediscovered in 1888, L'incoronazione di Poppea is not just a an important benchmark in the history of opera, but has re-entered the repetoire as a living, breathing work of art. .

Clipperfregatschip met hulpstoomvermogen "Utrecht", kapitein A. Hoogenstraten.London, William Foster, 1869. Double-tinted lithograph, finished in colour (ca. 48 x 66.5 cm) in a passepartout and framed (ca. 67.5 x 88.5 cm).

Archibald, Dictionary of sea painters of Europe and America, p. 149; Holdsworth, Mail and passenger steamships of the nineteenth century, pp. 288-289; The Lloyd mail VII (1937), p. 509; Maritiemdigitaal (1 copy). Rare portrait of the ship Utrecht , a full-rigged clipper with auxiliary power and screw propellers, built in 1868 for the firm of Van Zeylen & Decker in Rotterdam and capable of carrying 2009 tons. During the subsequent years, the ship made several voyages between Rotterdam and Batavia (Jakarta) and Semarang, carrying passengers and goods. Although the ship was equipped with an auxiliary steam engine, this system proved a failure and was removed in 1870-1871. After being sold to the firm of Voorhoeve & Jelier in Rotterdam, the ship sailed between Rotterdam, The United Kingdom, Ireland, the Dutch East Indies and San Francisco. The ship was sold in 1888 to the firm of C.M. Matzen in Hamburg and afterwards possibly to a firm in Norway. The British lithographer Thomas Goldsworth Dutton was "not only the finest 19th century lithographer of shipping scenes and ship portraits but happily the most prolific" (Archibald). During his career he produced numerous portraits of ships, including mercantile vessels of international companies, a large number of war ships of the Royal Navy and several yachts, as well as naval actions during the Crimean War.In fine condition, with only a few spots.

        Of Mice and Men

Covici Friede, New York 1937 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with all first issue points accounted for, as follows: contains the bullet (or dot) between the 8's on page 88 which was removed in all later printings. With nine words to bottom of page 9 including the word "pendula". Lines 20 & 21 read "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula". These nine words were removed in later printings & the entire page reset. The second state has "loosely" instead of "pendula" on page 9. Top edge of book block is stained blue, as issued. Later issues were unstained. This copy printed by J.J. Little & Ives Co. Later issues (& all book club copies) were printed by Haddon Craftsmen. Finally, the first issue (as in this copy) does not list St. Katy the Virgin in the titles "Also by John Steinbeck" opposite title page. Apparently an oversight, as St. Katy was previously released by Covici Friede in 1936. The title was added to the list in the second printing. Bound in original tan cloth, titles & design to spine & front board in orange & black. This copy of the actual book with ALL FIRST ISSUE POINTS. The dustjacket is a curiosity: Firstly, it should have original price ($2.00) printed on inner front flap (no price on this copy), plus shallow beveled corners on all flaps as published (which this copy has). This copy of the dustjacket has a curious misprint: in the last line of the second paragraph on the rear inside flap the word "is" is misprinted as "it". The full sentence reads: "She holds an uncanny fascination for these men, a fascination against which Lennie's simple mind it not able to set up adequate controls". Apparently the contemporary (also 1937) book club edition of the dustjacket contained the misprinted "it". NOTE: All things considered, this copy appears be a first edition of the book married at some point with a nice copy of the 1937 book club dustjacket. Firsts Magazine (February 2003, Vol.13, No.2) spells it all out in an in-depth 6-page feature article regarding complexities of the various issue points (see for full details), however there still appears to be some (justified) confusion among many dealers & collectors. From Firsts Magazine (in part): "The problems with first issue copies begin with price-clipped jackets. The large majority of jackets have shallow, beveled corners, which collectors sometimes confuse for price-clipping. At first glance, a clipped book club jacket looks very much like a first edition jacket. In fact, some collectors say you can't tell the difference. Many book club jackets can easily be distinguished by a misspelling on the rear flap. At some point 'it' replaced the correct 'is'. In a perfect world that might be the end of the matter. But not all book club edition jackets have the misprint. Some book club jackets have a blurry 's', indicating that the type was damaged or deteriorating, & the error crept in during an attempt to solve the problem. But not all book clubs have the blurry 's', & genuine jackets also have a slightly irregular 's'. Some dealers point out that the book club jackets have deeper colors - particularly a darker blue. But, here again, the book club jackets are not consistently more colorful" [the article continues at length]. Covici Friede published Of Mice & Men on 25 February, 1937. By way of illustrating this volume's scarcity, 2500 copies of the first issue were printed, versus 50,000 for The Grapes of Wrath, & 78,000 for Cannery Row. Overall condition is NF/VG. The book is slightly cocked, small light stain to top corner of spine, mild marginal toning, original blue staining to top edge faded, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. The dustjacket is lightly rubbed, small closed tears to upper edge of rear panel, slight wear to spine ends & extremities, mild toning, otherwise a bright clean & complete jacket. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear Bro-dart cover. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE in a scarce misprinted book club dustjacket in nice condition. RARE. Size: 19 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[MAKE A PARK FOR CHILDREN YOURSELF] Detskie sady i parki: Prakticheskie materialy po oborudovaniu, oformleniyu i organizatsii dosuga v detskikh parkakh, sadakh, skverakh i na ploshchadkakh [i.e. Children's Gardens and Parks: Practical Materials on Equipment, Decoration and Organization of Children's Leisure Time in Parks, Gardens, and Playgrounds]

[Moscow]: izd. i f-ka iunosheskoi knigi izd-va «Molodaia gvardia», 1937. 114, [6] pp.: ill. 27x17 cm. In original illustrated cloth binding with blind and faded gilt lettering. Near fine, some light rubbing, a couple of pencil underlinings. First and only edition. One of 10000 copies. Rare. This a remarkable book about creation of children's parks intended for organizers and workers of such parks, playgrounds, 'organizers of children in squares and boulevards', etc. Most of attractions and constructions from the book can be build in the city and village, even in pioneer summer camp. The edition is richly illustrated with drawings and plans for visibility providing us with an amazing material to study. The book consists of several chapters: Planning of children's park, Equipment of the park, Attractions, Decoration, Sports, entertainment and games. At once the author says «All sorts of planning and standard projects of children's parks will only be harmful. On the site it is always clearer what can be more interesting for children, what and where to build...» (which sounds unusual for 1937 in Soviet Union where everything should be planned and according to the rules of the mighty). The idealism of this book («At every step in the park kids should meet wonderful surprises») echoes the idealism of the era. People were still very enthusiastic about building communism, for example the Stakhanovite movement just appeared in 1935. Soviet people were eager to build and organize themselves and their children. Besides lacking entertainment in the past people used to invent things. This book continue the tradition. First thing to build in a park is a stadium for sports which can include anything - football field, solarium, tennis and volleyball courts, crocket field, etc. A pool should be build if there is no natural water reservoir. The second place in author's hierarchy take attractions which are better to install in one place in a shape of horseshoe. Next step is building areas for quiet games and reading. Laboratories, shooting galleries, theatre, preschool playgrounds are also described in the planning section along with service blocks (canteen, buffet, first-aid post, restrooms, etc.). Chapter 'Equipment' provides plans and algorithm of building sporting grounds including track, skating ring, basketball court, bowling alley; among attractions to build are pole for walking by plumb, swings, 'steep slide', 'flamethrower', 'spiralball' and other unusual and easy-tobuild entertaining activities. On designing park's decoration the author again declares that standard project of decoration is unnecessary because there are many of ways to do it and one can invent whatever they like. He gives examples on how to do it with illustrations of slightly bizarre objects like an alcove in a shape of big scissors, or green sculpture of a dragon, or geographical flowerbed. This was supposed to give inspiration and ideas. Probably the most interesting and valuable part of this book is description of games: Chinese billiards 'biksi', pushball, 'belki' [i.e. squirrels] - national game of the north regions, pioneerball and many others. Amazing how this book includes all kinds of drawings and designs for constructing next to very attractive drawings which are actually part of the book design. There are also a few photographs, including a rare shot of Archimedes Club in Gorky park. No copies at the Worldcat.

        Autograph letter signed ("Freud").

Vienna, 10. IX. 1937. - Folio. 2 pp. Addenda. To Dr R. L. Worrall, in German, thanking him for his interesting letter, from which he has learned much, and answering some of the points raised: "I know that my comments on Marxism are no evidence either of a thorough knowledge or a correct understanding of the writings of Marx and Engels. I have learnt since - very much to my satisfaction - that both in no way denied the influence of ideas and superego-structures. That invalidates the main contrast between Marxism and psycho-analysis which I had believed to exist. As to the 'dialectic', I am no clearer, even after your letter./ For the evidence of the hypothesis of the human primal horde I must refer you to my sources, Darwin and Atkinson. I have no other arguments than theirs. Naturally I accepted from psycho-analytical experience and what it would have led one to expect"; adding that "I do not quite grasp the bearing of your question about the nature of Id. As far as I understand it I should answer in the affirmative" (translation by Ernest Jones). - Worrall had written to Freud querying his statement in New Introductory Lectures that Marxism attributes social change solely to economic forces, whereas he believed Marx and Engels took full account of social history and psychological factors; he also raised the subject of Hegel's Absolute Ideal, and enquired whether Freud's concept of an 'old man of the tribe' relationship in prehistory, as giving rise to the Oedipus Complex, derived from Atkinson's interpretation of Darwin - and specifically if the mental qualities characteristic of the Id are of prehuman rather than of human origin (see the copy of Worrall's letter to Ernest Jones, included along with Jones's translation; also included is correspondence between Worrall and K. R. Eissler of the Sigmund Freud Archives, New York). When he wrote this letter, Freud was already suffering from the cancer that was to kill him: he tells Worrall that his letter "deserve[s] a comprehensive answer" but explains that "to do that by hand would be too great an effort for my eighty-one years" and that "a personal discussion would be a pleasure for me". Six months later, Austria was absorbed into the German Reich, and three months after that Freud escaped to England, where he was to die in September 1939. - On headed paper ("Prof. Dr. Freud"); smudge to ink, tape-stains at edges especially overleaf, weak at fold.

MAKE A PARK FOR CHILDREN YOURSELF] Detskie sady i parki: Prakticheskie materialy po oborudovaniu, oformleniyu i organizatsii dosuga v detskikh parkakh, sadakh, skverakh i na ploshchadkakh [i.e. Children's Gardens and Parks: Practical Materials on Equipment, Decoration and Organization of Children's Leisure Time in Parks, Gardens, and Playgrounds]

      - [Moscow]: izd. i f-ka iunosheskoi knigi izd-va «Molodaia gvardia», 1937. 114, [6] pp.: ill. On the site it is always clearer what can be more interesting for children, what and where to build.» (which sounds unusual for 1937 in Soviet Union where everything should be planned and according to the rules of the mighty). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[ANTI-NAZISM; CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT] Eine Mauer um uns baue.

[Germany, circa 1937]. Calligraphic manuscript. Small folio (320 x 230 mm), original quarter cloth over papered boards with onlaid manuscript title to front 'Ernst Wiechert. Eine Mauer um uns Baue'; stitch bound; pp 44, calligraphic manuscript in red and black inks; scattered mild foxing, confined to the margins of the leaves; else fine. Ernst Wiechert (1887-1950) was a German teacher, poet and writer whose humanist ideals and outspoken criticism of the National Socialist Party throughout the 1930s would result in his incarceration in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1938. He secretly kept a memoir of his imprisonment and buried the manuscript, which was published in 1945 as Der Totenwald (Forest of the dead). Wiechert's reflective essay addressed to youth,Eine Mauer um uns baue (Build a wall around us), was a Dankaufsatz written to mark his fiftieth birthday, and was publishedin the sympathetic Frankfurter Zeitung on 19 May 1937. It appears certain that the present calligraphic manuscript by an anonymous admirer of Wiechert's philosophy was copied from this edition of the Frankfurter Zeitung soon after its publication, as the first separately published edition that appeared the following year included an additional phrase at the beginning of the title (Vom Trost der Welt. Eine Mauer um uns baue. Mainz : Werkstatt für Buchdruck / Adalbert Eggebrecht Presse, 1938). The complete text of Eine Mauer um uns baue is available online at ernst-wiechert.de. Wiechert's significance as a moral philosopher and figure of resistance under the Nazi regime is widely recognised, and his actions and writings continue to be an important subject of scholarship and debate. The calligraphic manuscript we offer here, created in homage to an inspirational work, is documentary proof that - in 1937 at least - Wiechert's Germany was not without like-minded citizens.

The papers of Richard Norman Vyvyan, Marconi's Chief Engineer, comprising over 30 letters by Guglielmo Marconi, letters by other correspondents including Sir Ambrose Fleming, and Vyvyan's journal recording their trial operations.

Mostly London and New York, but including Mullion, Cornwall, Newport, R.I., etc., 1902-1909, with addenda to 1937. - 8 ALS (6 March 1902-1 July 1905, 4to and 8vo, 41 pp.) and 23 TLS (29 Aug. 1907-10 June 1909, 4to, 36 pp., plus one fragment of a letter signed) by Marconi. 1 ALS by Marconi's wife Beatrice (n. p. o. d., "Friday", 6 pp.). Also includes Vyvyan's illustrated autogr. ms. "Notes on Long Distance Wireless Telegraphy and The Design and Construction and Working of High Power Wireless Stations" (1900-1904; folio; 108 ff. on squared paper, pages numbered to 215; some leaves written on both sides; half calf). And: 8 ALS and 1 TLS by Vyvyan's co-worker Sir Ambrose Fleming (4to, 19 pp.) , and some 70 pp. of additional correspondence, mainly by Alldin Usborne Moore and Godfrey C. Isaacs, as well as 4 photographs and a quantity of printed ephemera and news clippings. A major archive relating to the early years of transatlantic telegraphy. The engineer Richard N. Vyvyan was to a large measure responsible for both the construction and operation of the transmitting station at Poldhu in Cornwall, from where the first ever transatlantic signal was sent to Newfoundland on 12 December 1901, and in charge of the station at Cape Breton the following year when the first signal was sent the other way and a regular service established. His 1933 book "Wireless over 30 Years" remains an important source for the history of wireless. - Marconi's autograph letters, written at the time of the first transmission of telegraph signal from Canada to England, are almost all to Vyvyan, but one it to the engineer's wife, informing her that he has been "working very hard to try and find out what are the somewhat occult causes which make signals good one night and unobtainable the next, and also the reason of the great difference in distance over which signals can be sent by day compared to night. For this purpose I have had to carry out a very great number of tests between [Poldhu] and other stations on the east coast and in Scotland, and I believe I have found if not very clearly the cause of the effects noticed at least the means by which to obtain signals across the Atlantic by day as well as by night" (5 Aug. 1903). On 15 May 1904, in a "Private" letter of eight 4to pages, he provides Vyvyan with "a statement of the results obtained from the working of the Poldhu station during the last voyage of the S. S Campania, from Liverpool to New York [.] I have undertaken to carry out a series of tests to war ships stationed at different points, the receiving apparatus being taken in charge of by our assistants. I shall try various sending arrangements at Poldhu [.]". Other letters cover more domestic matters, such as Marconi's marriage ("It seems rather strange that I should have got married - doesn't it? but I am so glad that I have and we are very happy."), their respective children (Marconi standing as godfather to the Vyvyan's daughter Mildred), and their life together in a shared house at Cape Breton. - Marconi's typed letters to Vyvyan constitute a more formal series, written in Marconi's capacity as Managing Director to Vyvyan at Glace Bay, discussing personnel and equipment: "Since my return here from London a few days ago I have been carrying out some interesting work. We are at present using only about half the available power of the plant, and the results of the programme, according to latest reports, are satisfactory in the light of the arrangements which we are using at this end. I hope that, by the time this letter reaches Glace Bay, you will have received the discs which were sent in charge of the operator of the 'Empress of Ireland' last Friday" (29 Aug. 1907). - Of especial interest are Vyvyan's illustrated autograph "Notes on Long Distance Wireless Telegraphy", beginning in 1900 with their work on the first transatlantic transmission ("In March of 1900 Mr Marconi after his invention of transmitting jigger decided that wireless telegraphy across the Atlantic was possible") and running on up to February 1904. A continuation volume is lacking. - The remain [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        STUDIES IN HAND-READING

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1937. First American edition. Cloth. Very good/very good. Large 8vo. Original blue cloth in printed dust-jacket. Very good in like DJ. Jacket spine mildly toned. Light edgewear. Unclipped. Cloth a bit soiled here and there. Some faint foxing to prelims. Else bright, sound, and clean. pp. xvi, 153, [1]. with errata slip bound in between xiv and xv. Rare work from the pioneering psychoanalyst. Wolff fled Germany (where she was friends with Walter Benjamin) in 1933 for France after the Nazi's took power. There she met Ravel, Duchamp, Man Ray, and others. She ultimately settled in London, however, where with the help of Aldous Huxley, she undertook this book to raise cash to support herself. Huxley provides an admiring introduction; Man Ray a frontis of the author from his photo. Includes numerous plates showing the hand-prints of many of her friends and their circle: Huxley, Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Max Ernst, Balthus, Cecil Beaton, Ravel, Artaud, Breton, Nijinsky, John Gielgud, and others - along with Wolff "readings" of each. Palmistry and chiromancy enjoyed a popular resurgence during the uncertain and tumultuous years of the Depression and outbreak of the War. And Wolff was one of its most respected proponents, taking a decidedly scientific approach to a decidedly questionable pastime. She subsequently went on to write several important works on homosexuality and she remains an important figure in gay history. Translated from the German by O.M. Cook. Very scarce, especially in jacket. This edition printed from the London plates (Chattam, 1936). [Bromer B46.1.2].
