MAKE A PARK FOR CHILDREN YOURSELF] Detskie sady i parki: Prakticheskie materialy po oborudovaniu, oformleniyu i organizatsii dosuga v detskikh parkakh, sadakh, skverakh i na ploshchadkakh [i.e. Children's Gardens and Parks: Practical Materials on Equipment, Decoration and Organization of Children's Leisure Time in Parks, Gardens, and Playgrounds]

      - [Moscow]: izd. i f-ka iunosheskoi knigi izd-va «Molodaia gvardia», 1937. 114, [6] pp.: ill. 27x17 cm. In original illustrated cloth binding with blind and faded gilt lettering. Near fine, some light rubbing, a couple of pencil underlinings. First and only edition. One of 10000 copies. Rare. This a remarkable book about creation of children's parks intended for organizers and workers of such parks, playgrounds, 'organizers of children in squares and boulevards', etc. Most of attractions and constructions from the book can be build in the city and village, even in pioneer summer camp. The edition is richly illustrated with drawings and plans for visibility providing us with an amazing material to study. The book consists of several chapters: Planning of children's park, Equipment of the park, Attractions, Decoration, Sports, entertainment and games. At once the author says «All sorts of planning and standard projects of children's parks will only be harmful. On the site it is always clearer what can be more interesting for children, what and where to build.» (which sounds unusual for 1937 in Soviet Union where everything should be planned and according to the rules of the mighty). The idealism of this book («At every step in the park kids should meet wonderful surprises») echoes the idealism of the era. People were still very enthusiastic about building communism, for example the Stakhanovite movement just appeared in 1935. Soviet people were eager to build and organize themselves and their children. Besides lacking entertainment in the past people used to invent things. This book continue the tradition. First thing to build in a park is a stadium for sports which can include anything - football field, solarium, tennis and volleyball courts, crocket field, etc. A pool should be build if there is no natural water reservoir. The second place in author's hierarchy take attractions which are better to install in one place in a shape of horseshoe. Next step is building areas for quiet games and reading. Laboratories, shooting galleries, theatre, preschool playgrounds are also described in the planning section along with service blocks (canteen, buffet, first-aid post, restrooms, etc.). Chapter 'Equipment' provides plans and algorithm of building sporting grounds including track, skating ring, basketball court, bowling alley; among attractions to build are pole for walking by plumb, swings, 'steep slide', 'flamethrower', 'spiralball' and other unusual and easy-tobuild entertaining activities. On designing park's decoration the author again declares that standard project of decoration is unnecessary because there are many of ways to do it and one can invent whatever they like. He gives examples on how to do it with illustrations of slightly bizarre objects like an alcove in a shape of big scissors, or green sculpture of a dragon, or geographical flowerbed. This was supposed to give inspiration and ideas. Probably the most interesting and valuable part of this book is description of games: Chinese billiards 'biksi', pushball, 'belki' [i.e. squirrels] - national game of the north regions, pioneerball and many others. Amazing how this book includes all kinds of drawings and designs for constructing next to very attractive drawings which are actually part of the book design. There are also a few photographs, including a rare shot of Archimedes Club in Gorky park. No copies at the Worldcat. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[ANTI-NAZISM; CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT] Eine Mauer um uns baue.

[Germany, circa 1937]. Calligraphic manuscript. Small folio (320 x 230 mm), original quarter cloth over papered boards with onlaid manuscript title to front 'Ernst Wiechert. Eine Mauer um uns Baue'; stitch bound; pp 44, calligraphic manuscript in red and black inks; scattered mild foxing, confined to the margins of the leaves; else fine. Ernst Wiechert (1887-1950) was a German teacher, poet and writer whose humanist ideals and outspoken criticism of the National Socialist Party throughout the 1930s would result in his incarceration in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1938. He secretly kept a memoir of his imprisonment and buried the manuscript, which was published in 1945 as Der Totenwald (Forest of the dead). Wiechert's reflective essay addressed to youth,Eine Mauer um uns baue (Build a wall around us), was a Dankaufsatz written to mark his fiftieth birthday, and was publishedin the sympathetic Frankfurter Zeitung on 19 May 1937. It appears certain that the present calligraphic manuscript by an anonymous admirer of Wiechert's philosophy was copied from this edition of the Frankfurter Zeitung soon after its publication, as the first separately published edition that appeared the following year included an additional phrase at the beginning of the title (Vom Trost der Welt. Eine Mauer um uns baue. Mainz : Werkstatt für Buchdruck / Adalbert Eggebrecht Presse, 1938). The complete text of Eine Mauer um uns baue is available online at Wiechert's significance as a moral philosopher and figure of resistance under the Nazi regime is widely recognised, and his actions and writings continue to be an important subject of scholarship and debate. The calligraphic manuscript we offer here, created in homage to an inspirational work, is documentary proof that - in 1937 at least - Wiechert's Germany was not without like-minded citizens.

The papers of Richard Norman Vyvyan, Marconi's Chief Engineer, comprising over 30 letters by Guglielmo Marconi, letters by other correspondents including Sir Ambrose Fleming, and Vyvyan's journal recording their trial operations.

Mostly London and New York, but including Mullion, Cornwall, Newport, R.I., etc., 1902-1909, with addenda to 1937. - 8 ALS (6 March 1902-1 July 1905, 4to and 8vo, 41 pp.) and 23 TLS (29 Aug. 1907-10 June 1909, 4to, 36 pp., plus one fragment of a letter signed) by Marconi. 1 ALS by Marconi's wife Beatrice (n. p. o. d., "Friday", 6 pp.). Also includes Vyvyan's illustrated autogr. ms. "Notes on Long Distance Wireless Telegraphy and The Design and Construction and Working of High Power Wireless Stations" (1900-1904; folio; 108 ff. on squared paper, pages numbered to 215; some leaves written on both sides; half calf). And: 8 ALS and 1 TLS by Vyvyan's co-worker Sir Ambrose Fleming (4to, 19 pp.) , and some 70 pp. of additional correspondence, mainly by Alldin Usborne Moore and Godfrey C. Isaacs, as well as 4 photographs and a quantity of printed ephemera and news clippings. A major archive relating to the early years of transatlantic telegraphy. The engineer Richard N. Vyvyan was to a large measure responsible for both the construction and operation of the transmitting station at Poldhu in Cornwall, from where the first ever transatlantic signal was sent to Newfoundland on 12 December 1901, and in charge of the station at Cape Breton the following year when the first signal was sent the other way and a regular service established. His 1933 book "Wireless over 30 Years" remains an important source for the history of wireless. - Marconi's autograph letters, written at the time of the first transmission of telegraph signal from Canada to England, are almost all to Vyvyan, but one it to the engineer's wife, informing her that he has been "working very hard to try and find out what are the somewhat occult causes which make signals good one night and unobtainable the next, and also the reason of the great difference in distance over which signals can be sent by day compared to night. For this purpose I have had to carry out a very great number of tests between [Poldhu] and other stations on the east coast and in Scotland, and I believe I have found if not very clearly the cause of the effects noticed at least the means by which to obtain signals across the Atlantic by day as well as by night" (5 Aug. 1903). On 15 May 1904, in a "Private" letter of eight 4to pages, he provides Vyvyan with "a statement of the results obtained from the working of the Poldhu station during the last voyage of the S. S Campania, from Liverpool to New York [.] I have undertaken to carry out a series of tests to war ships stationed at different points, the receiving apparatus being taken in charge of by our assistants. I shall try various sending arrangements at Poldhu [.]". Other letters cover more domestic matters, such as Marconi's marriage ("It seems rather strange that I should have got married - doesn't it? but I am so glad that I have and we are very happy."), their respective children (Marconi standing as godfather to the Vyvyan's daughter Mildred), and their life together in a shared house at Cape Breton. - Marconi's typed letters to Vyvyan constitute a more formal series, written in Marconi's capacity as Managing Director to Vyvyan at Glace Bay, discussing personnel and equipment: "Since my return here from London a few days ago I have been carrying out some interesting work. We are at present using only about half the available power of the plant, and the results of the programme, according to latest reports, are satisfactory in the light of the arrangements which we are using at this end. I hope that, by the time this letter reaches Glace Bay, you will have received the discs which were sent in charge of the operator of the 'Empress of Ireland' last Friday" (29 Aug. 1907). - Of especial interest are Vyvyan's illustrated autograph "Notes on Long Distance Wireless Telegraphy", beginning in 1900 with their work on the first transatlantic transmission ("In March of 1900 Mr Marconi after his invention of transmitting jigger decided that wireless telegraphy across the Atlantic was possible") and running on up to February 1904. A continuation volume is lacking. - The remain [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Light edgewear. Unclipped. Cloth a bit soiled here and there. Some faint foxing to prelims. Else bright, sound, and clean. pp. xvi, 153, [1]. with errata slip bound in between xiv and xv. Rare work from the pioneering psychoanalyst. Wolff fled Germany (where she was friends with Walter Benjamin) in 1933 for France after the Nazi's took power. There she met Ravel, Duchamp, Man Ray, and others. She ultimately settled in London, however, where with the help of Aldous Huxley, she undertook this book to raise cash to support herself. Huxley provides an admiring introduction; Man Ray a frontis of the author from his photo. Includes numerous plates showing the hand-prints of many of her friends and their circle: Huxley, Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Max Ernst, Balthus, Cecil Beaton, Ravel, Artaud, Breton, Nijinsky, John Gielgud, and others - along with Wolff "readings" of each. Palmistry and chiromancy enjoyed a popular resurgence during the uncertain and tumultuous years of the Depression and outbreak of the War. And Wolff was one of its most respected proponents, taking a decidedly scientific approach to a decidedly questionable pastime. She subsequently went on to write several important works on homosexuality and she remains an important figure in gay history. Translated from the German by O.M. Cook. Very scarce, especially in jacket. This edition printed from the London plates (Chattam, 1936). [Bromer B46.1.2].

The Unknown War: The Eastern Front

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1937. Hardcover. Here is the scarce Keystone Library issue of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War in the original dust jacket. In originally proposing this book to his U.S. publisher, Charles Scribner, Churchill wrote: "In the previous volumes of the World Crisis I have described only in a few pages the course of events in the Eastern theatre. They have merely been the background of our main drama of the war. But now I think I might write a volume called 'The Eastern Front', which would be separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." The British first edition, first printing, is the scarcest volume of the six. Respectable copies are in particularly short supply and copies with the original dust jackets extravagantly rare. The publisher's Keystone Library edition offered here was produced six years after the first British edition, had only a single printing, and is nearly as scarce as the first edition, particularly in the dust jacket. Thornton Butterworth's Keystone Library series was intended as a lower priced series for titles which had run their course as trade editions. Today these Keystone Library editions are increasingly prized by collectors, particularly when accompanied by their original dust jackets. Thornton Butterworth printed the "Keystone Library" issue of The Unknown War using their first edition plates. Consequently, the contents are identical, with the addition of a Keystone Library list of publications in the prelims, the Keystone Library device on the title page, and notation of this later issue on the copyright page. Even the first edition's folding color map of the first edition is retained at page 368. The binding size and style are the same as for the British first edition of 1931. The only difference in style is that, for this issue, the publisher decided to use the same title as the U.S. first edition, using the original British first edition title as a subtitle instead. The binding cloth, though similar in color to the first edition, is coarser and did not wear quite as well. The dust jacket is quite different, printed black and red on heavy, scored, pale greenish paper decorated with the Keystone Library logos. This first and only Keystone Library issue approaches near fine in a better than very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with bright spine gilt. We note only a touch of wrinkling and hint of toning at the spine head, corresponding to wrinkling and tiny closed tears at the spine head of the dust jacket. The contents retain a crisp feel with no previous ownership marks. A trivial hint of spotting appears confined to the page edges, which show mild age toning. All maps and illustrations are present and in perfect condition, including the color folding map at p.368. The dust jacket is complete, with some toning and light staining to the spine, modest soiling to the flap folds, and the aforementioned wrinkling and tiny closed tears at the spine head. On the rare occasions that we encounter these Keystone Library dust jackets, a later bookseller has typically affixed a new price sticker to cover the original prices. In this case, the original price, printed at the lower spine and twice on the lower front panel, remains unobstructed. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Title vignette and 15 hand-coloured etchings by Leon Courbouleix. Title page printed in blue and black. Original wrappers printed in blue and with a hand-coloured etching by Courbouleix, card slipcase. FIRST EDITION of this fine example of a rare fetish: domestic bliss. One of 295 numbered copies (300 in total). WorldCat locates just one copy, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Slipcase staines, inside light foxing. The present copy appears to be a variant not recorded by Dutel: the title page and wrappers agree with his description of the first edition, but it is one of 295 on Arches with 36 leaves, instead of one of 285 on Arches with 33 leaves. But it is identical with the copy described by Christies, Fekete-Auction 2014, lot 64. Dutel 2251. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Out of Africa

London: Putnam, 1937. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine. First Edition ("First Published November 1937" on the copyright page), preceding all other English-language editions, including the more common American first printing of 1938, of Dinesen's best-loved work, published under her pseudonym. Original coarsely woven, claret-colored cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. 8vo: x, 416pp. A Fine, bright copy, apparently unread, the binding tight and square, the spine gilt brilliant, the pages spotless. Just superb. Blixen's second book, part novel, but mostly memoir of her 19 years in Africa-"I had a farm . . . at the foot of the Ngong Hills." The Oscar-winning film (1985), starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, was based more on Judith Thurman's biography of Blixen than the book, in which Blixen's romance with Denys Finch-Hatton is mentioned only obliquely. Out of Africa is unusual as the work of a colonial writer in placing Africans, rather than white settlers, in the foreground, along with descriptions of the glorious landscape. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Clipperfregatschip met hulpstoomvermogen "Utrecht", kapitein A. Hoogenstraten.London, William Foster, 1869. Double-tinted lithograph, finished in colour (ca. 48 x 66.5 cm) in a passepartout and framed (ca. 67.5 x 88.5 cm).

Archibald, Dictionary of sea painters of Europe and America, p. 149; Holdsworth, Mail and passenger steamships of the nineteenth century, pp. 288-289; The Lloyd mail VII (1937), p. 509; Maritiemdigitaal (1 copy). Rare portrait of the ship Utrecht, a full-rigged clipper with auxiliary power and screw propellers, built in 1868 for the firm of Van Zeylen & Decker in Rotterdam and capable of carrying 2009 tons. During the subsequent years, the ship made several voyages between Rotterdam and Batavia (Jakarta) and Semarang, carrying passengers and goods. Although the ship was equipped with an auxiliary steam engine, this system proved a failure and was removed in 1870-1871. After being sold to the firm of Voorhoeve & Jelier in Rotterdam, the ship sailed between Rotterdam, The United Kingdom, Ireland, the Dutch East Indies and San Francisco. The ship was sold in 1888 to the firm of C.M. Matzen in Hamburg and afterwards possibly to a firm in Norway. The British lithographer Thomas Goldsworth Dutton was "not only the finest 19th century lithographer of shipping scenes and ship portraits but happily the most prolific" (Archibald). During his career he produced numerous portraits of ships, including mercantile vessels of international companies, a large number of war ships of the Royal Navy and several yachts, as well as naval actions during the Crimean War.In fine condition, with only a few spots.

The South Wales Borderers 24th Foot 1689-1937

Solid original 1937 volume in full green leather binding with gold motifs plus XXIV in a garland. This is a splendid book with no expense spared in its production.  It shows very little sign of wear.   Endpapers are (front) map showing the war services of the regiment, and (rear) chart showing movements of the regiment.Wonderful illustrations, on a variety of papers using different techniques,  some in colour, including the arms of sir Edward Dering, and original etchings with tissue guards  including a frontis of Sir Edward Dering, image of Daniel Dering, the Prince of Wales,  and of the Zulu War Colours of 1892. The Colours of the regiment are printed in full colour including silver and there are many other colour reproductions and black and white photos, a splendid colour reproduction of a map drawn by Capt Symons in 1879 of Isandhlwana, and reproduction map of Rorke's Drift, double spread calligraphed roll of officers and non com officers at Rourke's Drift, and many black and white text illustrations.   In pencil on the front free endpaper is "MBS Stratton Audley, Nov 1937" in pencil, with a smudge at the bottom.  Intro by Maj Gen Morgan Owen.  2 Appendices, roll of officers and war memorials.   Flaws: although the binding is generally excellent, the back board is faded and marked in a pattern of stripes, as it appears to have been leaned against something in its lifetime and there is also very slight wear to the corners and a small amount of fading and wear to the top of the spine.   Some scattered light foxing.  A Daily Telegraph article of 1994 which mentions the regiment, has been tipped in with two dabs of glue.   Very heavy book which will need to be sent insured, so postage overseas will need to take account of this and extra charges will be incurred for overseas purchasers.

Although Kurt Schwitters was one of the most influential artists of international modernism, only select portions of his immensely varied body of pictorial work have been investigated thoroughly. And what a body of work it is, unlike one ever seen before or after, combining bits of found detritus into compositions of tight, unexpected melodies and startling tunes. Schwitters was constantly sighting scraps of handbills, train tickets, newspapers, clothing, and more on the city streets, pocketing them for later use in one of his Merz collages. His intense body of found object constructions stands as one of the premier examples of the ultimtate modern form, assemblage, of which he has been called the "grandfather." After extensive research worldwide and a complete examination of his artistic estate, Schwitters's oeuvre has finally been properly acknowledged, documented, and prepared for public presentation. The comprehensive Kurt Schwitters Catalogue Raisonna, of which the present volume is the third installation, includes more than four thousand works from the period between 1905 and 1948, many of them published for the first time. Lost and destroyed works are documented whenever possible. For ease of reference, the survey is ordered chronologically within each year, works are sub-divided according to genre. In this third volume are presented creations spanning Schwitters's years in exile, 1937 to 1948, when he escaped Nazi Germany to live first in Norway and then in England. Though artworks are primarily reproduced in black-and-white, each volume of the catalogue also presents color reproductions of representative works Zusatzinfo 1312 Abb., davon 119 farbig Sprache englisch deutsch Maße 265 x 308 mm Gewicht 4830 g Einbandart Leinen Kunst Musik Theater Kunstgeschichte Kunststile catalogue raisonne catalogue raisonné classical modern art Dada Sachbücher Kunst Literatur Bildende Kunst Sachbücher Künstler Literatur Bildende Kunst Klassische Moderne Schwitters, Kurt Schwitters, Kurt Werkverzeichnis Werkverzeichnisse ISBN-10 3-7757-0989-4 / 3775709894 ISBN-13 978-3-7757-0989-7 / 9783775709897 Kurt Schwitters Catalogue raisonné Band 3 1937-1948/ Volume 3 1937-1948 (Gebundene Ausgabe) von Karin Orchard (Autor), Isabel Schulz (Autor)

Of Mice and Men [First Issue]

New York: Covici-Friede, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. First Printing, First Issue, with "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula," lines 20-21, p. 9, and bullet between the eight's on p. 88, one of only 2500 copies (in subsequent printings, the nine words on p. 9 and the bullet between the eight's were removed and the entire page reset). Chosen as a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, accounting for the many copies now on the market in clipped "unpriced" dust jackets masquerading as the genuine article. Small 8vo: 186pp. Publisher's beige cloth, spine and upper cover lettered within orange title block between thick black rules, top edge stained blue, pictorial dust jacket printed in black and priced $2.00. A spectacular copy, square, tight, clean, unmarked and probably unread, marred only by fading of blue top-stain; about Fine jacket, completely free of tears and edge wear, but spine panel lightly sunned (black lettering and design undiminished). Truly, one for the vaults. Goldstone-Payne A7a. "Of Mice and Men (the title is drawn from Robert Burns's poem “To A Mouse”: “The best laid schemes o' mice and men / Gang aft a-gley / An' leave us naught but grief an' pain / For promised joy”) marks a deliberate change from Steinbeck's previous work, In Dubious Battle (1936). In this new project, Steinbeck chose to work within a narrower framework . . . concentrat[ing] on a small number of characters as Steinbeck tells the story of migrant ranch laborers in carefully detailed settings. . . . From the very beginning, not only are readers given a call to social reform (the plight of the migrant worker is bleak and unlikely to change), but they also see that such men possess an American dream shared by all levels of society. Even though George and Lennie are different in size, although one is mentally sharp and the other retarded, they both have their dream of ownership and independence." (The Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Case of the Palestine Arab

1937. First Edition . BECK, Frank H. The Case of the Palestine Arab. [London]: (W. & J. Rounge, 1937). Slim octavo, staple-bound as issued, original blue-gray paper wrappers respined and reinforced; pp. 28. $1500.First edition of this compelling work written a decade before Israeli statehood arguing that the British government had an obligation to be loyal to the Palestinian Arab community.Written right before the outbreak of World War II, this concise and forceful work enumerated the reasons why Britain should have placed its support behind the Arab nations and, specifically, the Palestinians. It attempted to show the economic and social disadvantages of the Palestinian population in a region that was being subjected to heavy Jewish immigration (particularly following the new racial policies in Europe). Beck objected to the justifications underlying Zionism and asserted that Britain had showed favoritism and excessive leniency toward the Jewish community. He argued that Palestinian Jews and Jewish immigrants to Palestine were overtaking the Palestinian population economically and turning the Palestinians into “half-serfs,” a situation he predicted would eventually result in catastrophe. Thus, Beck stated, the only choice was to uphold the original promises Lawrence had made to the Arab community and to stop becoming mired in the mess of Balfour, the White Paper, and the promises made to the Jewish community. A few tiny spots of soiling to interior, a bit of toning and soiling to extremities of wrappers and paper reinforcement. A very good copy.

Führer durch die Ausstellung Entartete Kunst

Cover title: Entartete "Kunst" : Ausstellungsführer. [=Degenerate Art : exhibition guide]. Berlin : Verlag für Kultur- und Wirtschaftswerbung, [1937]. First edition, first printing, with the original text on page 21 and page 29 which was subsequently altered by Göring. Royal octavo, original pictorial wrappers (some mild creasing, short split at head of spine), staple bound, pp 30, [2], illustrated with black and white plates, internally clean and sound. Text in German, in Fraktur. "Die Ausstellung wurde zusammengestellt von der Reichspropagandaleitung, Amtsleitung Kultur. Sie wird in den größeren Städten aller Gaue gezeigt werden. Verantwortlich für den Inhalt:: Fritz Kaiser, München." A rare original copy of the first version of the exhibition guide published to accompany the Nazi Party's infamous Degenerate Art exhibition, which opened at the Haus der Kunst, München, in July 1937. The exhibition featured 650 works of art confiscated from 32 German museums. The term "Degenerate art" was applied to any work which did not conform to the NSDAP's ideals of artistic taste and beauty, which essentially meant any work by Expressionists, Impressionists, Dadaists, Surrealists, Cubists or Fauves. Works by artists such as George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Ernst and Paul Klee were included in the exhibition, where they were ridiculed as examples of sick, Jewish-Bolshevik art. The text alterations demanded byGöring concerned page 21: originally, as here, "Drei Kostproben von jüdischer Plastik und Malerei ... die Juden heißen: Meidner, Freundlich und Haizmann", but changed in the second printing to "Drei Kostproben entarteter Plastik und Malerei ... Die Titel lauten: Selbstbildnis des Juden Meidner ... Kopf von Haizmann"; and page 29, originally "das Judengeschöpf wiegt ...", changed in the second printing to "das Machwerk wiegt ...". The present copy's pagination also differs from the standard 30 pages: it has two unnumbered pages with illustrations after page 30. Copies are recorded in two Australian collections (University of Melbourne Library; Art Gallery of New South Wales Research Library).
