On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem.

London: C.F. Hodgson & Son, 1936-1937. A fine set, not ex-library, of arguably the single most important theoretical work in the history of computing. In this paper Turing introduced the concept of a 'universal machine', an imaginary computing device designed to replicate the mathematical 'states of mind' and symbol-manipulating abilities of a human computer. Turing conceived of the universal machine as a means of answering the last of the three questions about mathematics posed by David Hilbert in 1928: (1) is mathematics complete; (2) is mathematics consistent; and (3) is mathematics decidable. Hilbert's final question, known as the 'Entscheidungsproblem', is concerned with whether there exists a definite method, or 'mechanical process', that can be applied to any mathematical assertion, and which is guaranteed to produce a correct decision as to whether that assertion is true or not. The logician Kurt Gödel had already in 1931 shown that arithmetic (and by extension mathematics) could not be both consistent and complete. Turing showed, by means of his universal machine, mathematics is undecidable. To demonstrate this, Turing came up with the concept of 'computable numbers', which are numbers defined by some definite rule, and thus calculable on the universal machine. These computable numbers would include every number that could be arrived at through arithmetical operations, finding roots of equations, and using mathematical functions like sines and logarithms - every number that could possibly arise in computational mathematics. Turing then showed that these computable numbers could in turn give rise to uncomputable ones, ones that could not be calculated using a definite rule, and that therefore there could be no 'mechanical process' for solving all mathematical questions, since computing an uncomputable number was an example of an unsolvable problem. Turing's idea of a 'universal machine' was given the name "Turing machine" by Church. The concept of the Turing machine has become the foundation of modern computer science. Origins of Cyberspace 394. Richard Green Library (Christie's sale 2013, lot 326). Erwin Thomas Library T61 and T62. 8vo (249 x 168 mm).         Munkásgyülés. 1937. szeptember 26-án, [?] Tompa-utca 14 sz. alatt. [Workers' Congress. September 26, 1937. (?) at Tompa Street 14.]

György Kapus (Budai-nyomda), [Budapest] 1937 - Original, vintage poster. Printed on green paper. Illustrated with the emblem of the Party. 475 × 315 mm. Original program poster of the United Hungarian National Socialist Party, a call for a workers' congress, and the announcement of the speakers. The poster announces the date and the place of the congress and lists the speakers, who were among the most important figures of the Hungarian Nazi movement, like Ferenc Kassai who later became the Minister of Propaganda of the Arrow Cross Party in 1944. The word "Bárorság!" (Braveness!, or Be Brave!) is printed to the lower left corner, because the congress was held just a few days after their gathering which was attacked and smashed by young Communists on September 16, 1937, as a response to the assault happened on May Day when a member of the Communist movement was shot by the National Socialist. The Egyesült Magyar Nemzeti Szocialista Párt (United Hungarian National Socialist Party) was one of the earliest Hungarian Nazi parties, existed from 1933 until 1940 when it merged into Ferenc Szálasi's Arrow Cross Party. Its leader Fidél Pálffy, Ferenc Kassai and Szálasi were executed in 1946 after a trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Folded. With the contemporary vignette of the Party's archive. Small tears at foldings in the center. Another small tear at the lower edge to the right. Torn with loss near to upper right corner. Slightly discolored at edges due to aging. Otherwise in fine condition. Original, vintage poster. Printed on green paper. Illustrated with the emblem of the Party. [Attributes: First Edition]

Approximately 50 Jindyworobak (and related) publications from the collection of Kenneth Gifford, editor in Victoria of Jindyworobak Publications and author of 'Jindyworobak. Towards an Australian Culture' (the first publication of the Victorian office of Jindyworobak Publications in 1944). There are 13 books by Rex Ingamells, nine of which are inscribed and/or signed copies; these include Gumtops (1935), Forgotten People (1936), Sun-Freedom (1938) and Memory of Hills (1940)

There is a rare complete set of the six issues of the periodical 'Venture', with all copies signed by Rex Ingamells: Volume 1, Number 1, July 1937 (the only number in the first series) plus Volume 1, Number 1, April 1939 to the unnumbered fifth issue of May 1940. Other authors represented are Gina Ballantyne (two books); Flexmore Hudson (four books, all signed - one inscribed, one with manuscript corrections); Gifford (one book, signed); William Hart-Smith (two books); 'Ricketty Kate' (one book); Ian Mudie (three books) and Colin Thiele (two books); John Ingamells is represented as editor of 'Cultural Cross-Section' (1941). There is an unbroken run of the Jindyworobak Anthology from the first issue in 1938 to 1950 (two are signed by Rex Ingamells, one is signed by Gifford), as well as a copy of Jindyworobak Review 1938-1948 (but the last three annuals to 1953 are not present). Apart from insignificant chipping to the overlapping edges of a few wrappers, the condition is uniformly fine (although of the seven cloth-bound volumes in the collection, only 'Gumtops' retains its dustwrapper). Fine copies of two essential reference works have been added to the collection; these are 'The Jindyworobaks' by Brian Elliott and 'Australian Little Magazines, 1923-1954' by John Tregenza. With this collection as a foundation, there is the very real possibility of gathering the complete published works of the seminal Jindyworobak movement. To quote Brian Elliott (who was personally involved with the early stages of the movement) in his reappraisal of the real value and effect of the Jindyworobak poetical institutions: 'My conclusion is not that they were a product of exceptional genius, but that the movement was spontaneous, natural and inevitable, and that it had an effect upon the nation - upon the national literature, but also upon the nation itself - that went beyond what was obvious in the poetry. In Judith Wright's words, the Jindyworobaks have taught us all to know ourselves a little better'.

The High Commissioners in London for the Dominions and for India and Ambassadors to the Court of St James. Portraits specially taken for Publication in the 'Daily Telegraph' by J. Dixon-Scott. Coronation Year 1937

London, 'Daily Telegraph', 1937. Large oblong octavo (205 x 300 mm), [iv] (title leaf, index of High Commissioners, both versos blank), [ii] (index of Ambassadors) pages plus 25 mounted gelatin silver portrait photographs (each approximately 150 x 200 mm). A photograph album in full light blue calf, lettered in gilt on the front cover; leather a little marked, sunned and scuffed, with the front top edge a little abraded in three spots; uncut deckle edges a little dusty or sunned, with a few trifling signs of handling; in very good condition, with the photographs in fine condition (albeit with uniform silvering-out around the thin unprinted borders). The High Commissioners are: The Honourable Vincent Massey, Canada; The Right Honourable Stanley Bruce, Commonwealth of Australia; W.J. Jordan, New Zealand; C.T. Te Water, Union of South Africa; J.W. Dulanty, Irish Free State; and Sir Firoz Khan Noon, India. The Ambassadors are: Dr Paul Regis de Oliveira, Brazil; Baron de Cartier de Marchienne, Belgium; Dr Manuel E. Malbran, Argentine; Count Grandi, Italy; Ivan Maisky, Soviet Union; Robert Worth Bingham, USA; Charles Corbin, France; Bey Fethi Okyar, Turkey; Count Edouard Raczynski, Poland; Quo Tai-Chi, China; Augustin Edwards, Chile; Shigeru Yoshida, Japan; Pablo de Azcarate, Spain; [Joachim] von Ribbentrop, Germany; Dr Armindo Monteiro, Portugal; and Dr Hafez Afifi Pasha, Egypt. 'In the late 1920s, the photographer John Dixon-Scott became concerned at the way the rural and urban environment of Britain was changing. He drove around the country with his camera intending to preserve through his pictures what he saw as a vanishing landscape, in a photographic project that took him years. The result was a collection of over 14,000 images which in 1946 he sold to the Central Office of Information, the British government's communications agency. Eventually these prints passed into the collections of The National Archives' (NA website). This commissioned album of portraits is unrepresentative of his life's work, which is surely our loss. The title of the album and the subjects in this series, worthy men all, do not, at first glance, suggest that a second glance is called for. But John Dixon-Scott has eschewed the time-honoured formality of the traditional head-and-shoulders treatment, and placed his men of mark in their offices or studies. The results are sublime - they are as much portraits of national character as of individuals. We'll save ourselves the trouble of writing the next thousand words by directing you to look at just two of the results, that of The Right Honourable Stanley Bruce of the Commonwealth of Australia (and her former Prime Minister), and Count Grandi of Italy.

Ponsin on Conjuring. Translated & Annotated by S.H.Sharpe.

George Johnson, The Magic Wand, London 1937 - 176pp. Strong association copy. Signed by Sharpe to half-title, and inscribed to George Johnson, the editor of The Magic Wand. Ex-Libris J.B. Findlay, a noted magic historian and collector. *** Bound in crushed green morocco featuring geometric gilt tooling around front and rear covers and gilt floriated tooling on all board edges. Spine in six raised compartments with gilt gadrooned dividers, and stamped gilt floriated design. Title compartment in red with gilt title. All text block edges gilt. Condition: Near Fine with some wear to corners and to the head of the spine, and a couple of tiny indentations to front cover. *** Jean Nicholas Ponsin (1801-1863), born Charles Eduard Ponsin, was an elementary-school teacher, drawing master, as well as an amateur magician in Reims. This book is based upon an earlier title by Ponsin entitled Nouvelle Magie Blanche Devoilee published in 1853, described by Sharpe, in the Translator’s Preface, as “the first practical treatise on conjuring produced in any language.” Material was used from the 1853 title by the famous Professor Hoffman in his notable work, “Modern Magic “ in 1845. What remained was considered by Sharpe, himself another amateur magician, as also worthy of publication. This volume then, translated from the original French, with Sharpe’s annotations and original illustrations by Wilfred Huggins, uses hitherto unused material. Subjects include: Card Effects, Coin Tricks, Cups and Balls as well as various other illusions with suggestive names such as "The Vanishing Lady", "The Dead and Revived Bird" and "The Kind Bullet". *** Publisher George Johnson (1877-1962) was a writer, collector and amateur magician, best known for his editorial direction of "The Magic Wand" magazine, published from 1914 to 1945 in Britain. *** The bookplate of another noted magic scholar, and collector of works on magic, J.B. Findlay, appears on the inside front cover. A Scot originally from Glasgow, Findlay wrote a large number of titles on the history of magic, and had a vast collection of over 6000 volumes on the topic. A magical book whose powers are no doubt enhanced by the many sets of famous conjuring fingers through which it has passed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sketches].

1937 - 2 sketches; 1 pencil and 1 conte pencil on paper. Mounted. Maxa Nordau was born to a middle class Parisian family. Her father, Max Nordau, was a physician and one of the founders of the International Zionist Organisation together with Theodor Herzl. She became an artist, studying oil painting, acrylic painting and sketching, before first exhibiting her work in 1924 in the official Salon in Strasbourg. During World War II, she left France and moved to the United States, where she displayed her work in several exhibitions in New York. Whilst there she took the opportunity to continue studying painting at the New York City College. When she returned to Paris in 1946, Nordau continued painting and began presenting her work in private galleries. Most of Nordau's paintings are portraits, particularly of women. Nordau travelled many times, and visited Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece, Morocco and other countries. The influence from her many journeys to the Middle East and to other Arabic countries is evident in the characters in her paintings. The Orient fascinated Nordau, and she paints the Arab women in her paintings in a very vivid and colourful manner. Nordau wasn't the only artist who had an interest in the Orient. This theme was very common amongst Jewish artists in the beginning of the 20th century, specifically amongst artists from Zionist families who had visited Palestine. Some of this group even left Europe and went to live and work in the growing Jewish state. When Nordau died in 1991, she left a large number of portraits and several illustrations. Although she was indeed French, Maxa Nordau is considered to be a part of what is called the 'School of Paris', a group of non-French artists, who worked in Paris before and during World War II.

Hunter printed side papers in gold and red inks on brown, persimmon juice-dyed Japanese paper; an old Chinese woodblock of a five-clawed dragon (used for ceiling decoration in the Imperial Palace in Peking) is superimposed on an overall "endless world" pattern in red. The illustrations are printed on Hunter's own handmade papers from both the Marlborough and the Lime Rock mills. Baker, By His Own Labor pp. 279-280. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Zürich, Fretz 1937 - 58 x 45 cm, Min knickspurig, tadell.
