Autograph Typed Letter, Signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" to Louise Lazell, Policy Reader for the Women's Division of the Federal Writers Project

Washington, D.C., 1937. 1p. with postscript in holograph, on White House letterhead. 8vo. Old folds, else fine. 1p. with postscript in holograph, on White House letterhead. 8vo. "I HOPE THAT WHEN 1940 COMES I CAN BE A PRIVATE CITIZEN" Described as a "friendly, though not very close, acquaintanceship," Eleanor Roosevelt and Louise Lazell, none the less, carried on regular correspondence between 1933 and at least 1941. In this letter, written during FDR's second term, Eleanor Roosevelt hints at her desire to be free of her role as first lady when the term is over. Reading: "Thank you very much for your letter, but I certainly have no desire to lead anything, except as I get involved in things which I cannot avoid! [Exclamation mark in holograph.] You are most kind to feel that I have so much influence and I hope that when 1940 comes that I can be a private citizen again and entirely off the record." Postscript in holograph, reading: "Your last letter came t-day & I will write Mrs. Jones" At Eleanor Roosevelt's behest, Louise Lazell was hired as a speech writer for the women's division of the Democratic National Committee in 1935. She was later employed at the Good Neighbor League, which was incorporated in 1936, to aid in the re-election campaign of President Roosevelt by emphasizing social and economic progress achieved under the New Deal, before being hired by Ellen Woodward, head of the Women's and Professional Division of the Federal Writers Project, as a Policy Reader, where she devoted herself to censoring actual or potential Communist propaganda, particularly in the WPA's state guide books. In 1938, Lazell gave damning testimony against her boss, Henry Alsberg, and other national editors, naming states that turned in Communist and inflammatory material and claiming that Alsberg shaped propaganda that incited class hatred, condemned buiness and industry and were blatantly pro-labor.

        Ornament of Honour

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1937 - A very good copy in the important d/w 131 pp;and with author's handwritten stanza; A significant association copy, in original binding, paper label, brick red cloth spine, tan boards, spare label still inserted at rear, tight clean copy. This is the memorial poem to T E Lawrence penned by Ernest Altounyan whose family was the inspiration to the Swallows and Amazons stories of Arthur Ransome. Presentation copy with signature and a stanza from one of the poems in Altounyan's hand on fep. Also with two letters, one long dated 1955 and discussing TE Lawrence and the publication of Aldington's biography. Very good clean copy complete with the scarce typographic d/w that refers to T.E.L. Ernest Altounyan, was the son of an Armenian father and an Irish mother and had been educated in England at Rugby, Arthur Ransome's own school. He then studied medicine before returning to his father's hospital in Aleppo to work as a doctor. He had married Dora Collingwood, who had been a friend of Arthur Ransome's, Ransome had proposed to both her and her sister Barbara earlier. The children of the marriage were the real children behind the Swallows and Amazons stories. They had five children, Taqui, Susie, Mavis, known as Titty, Roger and Brigit. In 1928 - 1929, while the Altounyans were on holiday with the Collingwoods, Ransome helped to teach them to sail. In return, they gave him a pair of red Turkish slippers. Ransome was touched by the gift and when he wrote Swallows and Amazons, he named most of the Walker family after the Altounyans. He also gave some of the Altounyans character traits to the fictional children which later led to conflict between the Ransomes and the Altounyans when people started identifying the Walkers too closely with their Altounyan originals. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Winifred Earl Lefferts, 1937., N. P. - [Stout, Rex]. Original publisher's mock-up by Winfred Earl Lefferts, for advertisement of Rex Stout's forth Nero Wolfe novel. Signed as "Lefferts." Beautifully executed in post-deco style. Original publisher's mock-up for advertisement of the fourth Nero Wolfe novel by Rex Stout. The mock-up utilizes a silkscreen print of artist-designer Winfred Earl Lefferts' jacket art against white board with a tiny "Printed in the USA" logo at the bottom left. Wolfe is portrayed in silhouette (as was the tradition on the first few jacket designs), a mug of frothing beer to his right, with a red box lying amidst the great man's orchids. Art size is 8 1/2" x 11." Attractively and archivally double-matted, in a beautiful 19" x 17" wooden frame. Wikipedia says "Winifred Earl Lefferts (October 9, 1903, Newtonville, Massachusetts â€" November 1995, Blandford, Massachusetts), also known as Winifred Lefferts Arms, was a painter, designer and philanthropist. A member of the Lefferts family, early settlers of Brooklyn, she studied and exhibited art, and designed for New York book publishers prior to her 1937 marriage to Carleton Macy. Following her marriage to Robert A. Arms in 1952 she painted as Winifred L. Arms. After the death of her second husband she became known for philanthropy and for founding a private residential treatment center in Carmel, New York, named Arms Acres. The daughter of Oscar Leffert Lefferts and Winifred Wood, Winifred Earl Lefferts was born into a socially prominent family. Her mother was descended from Francis Fauquier, Colonial lieutenant governor of Virginia, and Major Nathan Peters of Connecticut, aide to General George Washington. Through her father Lefferts was descended from Oliver Wolcott, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence; Matthew Griswold, governor of Connecticut; and Pieter Lefferts, an early Dutch settler of Brooklyn. Winifred Lefferts studied at the Pratt Institute Art School and the National Academy of Design in New York. She won a fellowship from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation in 1925, and received prizes from the National Arts Club in 1931, 1933 and 1936. She held membership in the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the New York Watercolor Club, the American Watercolor Society and the Allied Artists of America. Lefferts illustrated books and designed dust jackets for American book publishers in the 1920s and 1930s. Books that credit her as illustrator include Elaine Sterne Carrington's The Gypsy Star (1928) and Laura E. Richards' 1935 book of children's verses, Merry-Go-Round. Lefferts' name or her distinctive "W.E.L." signature appears on many book jackets, including the U.S. edition of W. Somerset Maugham's The Casuarina Tree (1926), DuBose Heyward's Angel (1926) and M. P. Shiel's Dr. Krasinski's Secret (1929). She designed covers for Rex Stout's How Like a God (1929) and Seed on the Wind (1930), and for three of Stout's early Nero Wolfe novels â€" The League of Frightened Men (1935), The Rubber Band (1936) and The Red Box (1937).         To Have and Have Not.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. First edition of Hemingway's classic novel about smuggling, intrigue, and love. Octavo, bound in full brown morocco, gilt titles and ruling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. To Have and Have Not was Hemingway's first since A Farewell to Arms was published eight years earlier, follows the life and adventures of Harry Morgan from rum-running to revolution. "In To Have and Have Not, Hemingway for the first time showed an interest in a possible solution of social problems through collective action" (Hart, 327). Basis for the Howard Hawks film co-scripted by William Faulkner and featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

The Red Box: A Nero Wolfe Mystery

[iv]+298+[5 introducing The Rubber band pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound original publisher's gray cloth, front cover and spine printed with red, rear cover blank in original second printing jacket. (April 2006, Firsts) First edition which has the publisher's monogram logo on the copyright page. The Red Box is the fourth Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout. Prior to its first publication in 1937 by Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, the novel was serialized in five issues of The American Magazine (December 1936 - April 1937). Adapted twice for Italian television, The Red Box is the first Nero Wolfe story to be adapted for the American stage. Wolfe and Archie investigate the death of a model who ate a piece of poisoned candy. One of the suspects begs Wolfe to handle his estate and especially the contents of a certain red box. Wolfe is at first concerned about a possible conflict of interest, but feels unable to refuse when the man dies in his office before telling Wolfe where to find the red box. The police naturally think that he told Wolfe somewhat more before dying. This novel presents the series' first instance of a murder taking place in Wolfe's office.Condition:Spine leaning slightly with shallow ridge down the back-strip; back-strip faintly dulled; corners gently bumped; spine ends, corners and joints lightly worn. Text block sagging very slightly; binding a little shaken; a few faint splashed to the top stain; end-papers lightly discolored; faint marginal foxing to first few leaves. Jacket spine panel lightly dulled, edges lightly worn with some minor chipping to the spine ends, rear panel faintly soiled, light offsetting to flaps. Still, a very good copy in like jacket.

        Autograph Letter Signed

Princeton: np, 1937. AN EXTRAORDINARY LETTER BY EINSTEIN TO HIS SON OFFERING LIFE ADVICE AND DISCUSSING FREUD, SHAKESPEARE, AND SCHILLER. Addressed to his son Eduard "Tetel" Einstein and signed "Papa", the letter, written in ink on both sides of one sheet, reads in full (translated from the original German):

Dear Tetel,

I hope by now you've received Freud's lectures from Vienna. I've read most of them myself in the past. They really made me admire the Author, but they didn't convince me that his theories were correct.

I must admit however that, based on my personal experiences, my conviction about those theories is weakening -- I feel now that he was onto something, at least in regards to the main theses.I would have written to you sooner, but work is keeping me very busy. Even though they say that the work of a single person will not have much of an impact in the big picture, it does not diminish the passion in which we pursue our interests, and that is a good thing.

Although personal illusions may bring warmth and joy into one's life when young, they don't last a lifetime. Life would be bleak if the work and the passion for discovery did not exist. In my free time I am currently reading Schiller's poems, which I have neglected since my youth.

They feel a bit pompous, but at the same time they are enthralling in their choice of words and grammar. I am really happy that I picked them up again.

I would have liked to send you another book on the top of the Freud, but didn't know which one to send -- especially because I don't get a lot of German writings anymore.

When I have some extra free time, after finishing Schiller, I really want to start reading Shakespeare, everything from him I can get my hands on. If you like to read it too, perhaps we could discuss it at some later time?

Albert is a real delight -- he has been traveling up and down the country for the past 6 weeks and will have seen and experienced many interesting things. I really hope he has followed my advice and kept a journal, but I am not holding high hopes. When it comes to talking and writing he seems to be chronically constipated. With my warmest regards,

PapaEinstein's life advice, underscoring one of his core beliefs:Einstein often stated that his main goal in life was the quest for truth, no matter how difficult and painstaking the quest. He advises Eduard in this letter that it is the pursuit and the work in attaining the goal that brings satisfaction and sustains one throughout life, even if "the work of a single person will not have much of an impact in the big picture". This, he notes, is critical to understand after the illusions of youth have succumbed to reality.Einstein, Eduard, and Freud:Eduard Einstein (nicknamed "Tete" or "Tetel"), born in 1910, was the second son of Albert and his first wife Mileva. From an early age, he became enamored with the teachings of Freud, even hanging a picture of famous psychiatrist on his bedroom wall. By the age of twenty he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and consequently was institutionalized several times throughout his life.Einstein's views of Freud's teachings were somewhat more nuanced than those of his son. Initially, Einstein did not show much interest in Freud's theories and after their first meeting in 1927, Freud famously remarked "He understands as much about psychology as I do about physics."Over the years, however, Einstein began studying Freud's works. After corresponding with Freud somewhat regularly throughout the 1930s and even collaborating with him on a project sponsored by the League of Nations ("Why War?", 1932), Einstein began to move from a deep skepticism to - as indicated in this letter - a growing acceptance.By 1936 - just before this letter was written - Einstein sent birthday greetings to Freud, acknowledging:"Until recently I could only apprehend the speculative power of your train of thought, together with its enormous influence on the Weltanschauung of the present era, without being in a position to form a definite opinion about the amount of truth it contains. Not long ago, however, I had the opportunity of hearing about a few instances, not very important in themselves, which in my judgment exclude any other interpretation than that provided by the theory of repression. I was delighted to come across them, since it is always delightful when a great and beautiful conception proves to be consonant with reality."
In this letter to Eduard, Einstein admits to Eduard that he now believes Freud "was onto something, at least in regards to the main theses."Einstein, Shakespeare, Schiller:Einstein's fondness for music is well-known, but not as much has been recorded about his literary tastes. It is not surprising (and has been previously documented) that Einstein had a fondness for the great German poet Schiller, but we can find no other references to Shakespeare by Einstein in any other letters or manuscripts. His words to Eduard, "I really want to start reading Shakespeare, everything from him I can get my hands on" imply that Einstein has recently "discovered" Shakespeare and is excited at the discovery.
Note: Although the letter is not dated, we can assume that it was written late (November - December) in 1937, when Einstein's son Albert was visiting the United States (a trip he refers to in the letter).[Princeton]: [November - December], 1937. One 8.5x11 inch leaf, written on both sides. In German. Usual folds, otherwise fine.A LONG, REMARKABLE, AND REVEALING LETTER UNITING THE INTELLECTUAL GIANTS EINSTEIN, FREUD, AND SHAKESPEARE, AND SHARING ONE OF HIS CORE BELIEFS WITH HIS SON. Very Good.
