        Earthly Discourse

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1937. New York: The Vanguard Press,, 1937. Octavo. Original light brown cloth, titles to spine and upper board in blue, blue top-stain. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece. Bindings lightly rubbe and marked, spine a little tanned, endpapers tanned, contents toned. Inscribed by the author "To John & Carol Steinbeck in sorrow for their un-social thought and behavior, 'The Cats', Los Gatos California, November 11 1938". He has also autographed the frontispiece. Wood (1852–1944) was a writer, lawyer, and prominant supporter of radical causes, and Earthly Discourse is a collection of satirical stories in this vein. Wood was friendly with many activists and writers, including John Steinbeck, whose Of Mice and Men was published the year before this book was inscribed. "The Cats" was the name of Wood's house: the name of the town means "the cats" in Spanish.

[Original Art]: Black Mother Goose: Eight Murals or Friezes Depicting African-American Children as Characters from Nursery Rhymes

, [Circa 1937] [Circa 1937]. Eight murals or friezes depicting African-American children as characters from nursery rhymes. Meant to be hung or in a continuous pattern, the mural consists of eight oil paintings on canvas, each of which measures 19" x 82", and if hung together, they would total about 55 feet long. Each canvas is currently gently rolled, with a protective tissue wrapper. There are small cracks in the paint, with no loss and they are overall fine. A remarkable and enigmatic mural illustrating African-American children in themes from various nursery rhymes including the Mother Goose rhymes, (especially from "There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe"), themes from Alice in Wonderland, Little Black Sambo, and others. Some of the panels are signed and/or dated in 1937 by Marion Mackenzie Heywood, a Philadelphia based artist, of whom we know little. .

George Allen & Unwin, London 1937 - The book is firmly bound in the original green cloth, lettered and decorated in black, there is some minor damage to the cloth at the corners and spine ends and one or two tiny marks, the spine is a little cocked. The text block is a touch age toned and there is a neatly written gift inscription to the first blank page, but it is free from foxing.         IMAGES OF JAPANESE CAVALRYMEN IN THE LATE-1930'S, AS COLLECTED IN A PHOTO ALBUM.

[ca.1937-38] - Oblong black cloth photo album, bound with cord, blind embossed illustration of a bird on the front cover. 18 x 26 cm.; 24 leaves. A group of 95 photos, most 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches (a handful larger or smaller), laid down on stiff black leaves of paper. Approximately 65 of the images are portrait photos of particular cavalrymen. Their collar insignia indicate most of the men are part of the 25th Cavalry Regiment of the 4th Cavalry Brigade, Imperial Japanese Army. Their rank insignia are present on the shoulders of their uniforms, consistent with military practice in Japan from 1911-1938. The uniforms also show the scalloped pocket flap on the tunic, introduced for all ranks by 1930. The remainder show the cavalrymen in both official and casual groupings. Two are large group photos of the troop. All of the photos are clear and sharp, with the exception of two or three slightly over-exposed. The 25th Cavalry Regiment, from 1937 until "the outbreak of the China Incident," [a reference to the Second Sino-Japanese War] was based in the city of Toyohashi, in the eastern Aichi Prefecture. One photo shows the gates to a compound, now part of the Aichi University, which had been used in the late 1930's as the army reserve officer school of the 4th cavalry brigade. There are also two photos of what we have been able to identify as the Toyokawa Inari, a Buddhist Temple in the city of Toyokawa, a short distance from Toyohashi. One of the two images shows soldiers gathered with their children in front of the temple. It was the custom to go to the shrine with families before going off to war, for good luck. There are also several photos of the soldiers who had care of the horses for the troops, and one of what appears to be a sort of 'commissary' with two soldiers sitting stiffly behind a counter, protecting the goods which include cans and bottles, plus a few boxes of "breakfast cocoa" (so labelled in English). The more casual photos include one of a group of Japanese men in both traditional and western dress enjoying a meal. They are posed seated on the floor which is strewn with many dishes of food and bottles of drink. There is another casual photo of eight men, one in uniform, one in traditional dress, the rest in western clothes (four of these men wear panama-style hats) posed with a pair of kewpie dolls. This may be a reference to the traditional Japanese celebration of the "Doll's Day," celebrated on March 3. The dolls were believed to be able to contain bad spirits, perhaps added protection to a soldier about to go to war? An unauthorized version of the kewpie doll was manufactured in Japan in the 1920's. A window into Japanese military life just prior to World War II. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A very good, bright copy. First edition, first impression. William Gosse Hay (1875-1945), an Australian author and essayist, was born into a South Australian family, to the colonist Alexander Hay and his second wife, Agnes Grant Gosse, a novelist.         THE LATE GEORGE APLEY: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir

Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1937.. Boston:: Little, Brown and Co.,. 1937. First edition of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. INSCRIBED, "For Henry T. Brown Jr with kindest regards, John P. Marquand." Also includes two typed letters to Brown signed by Marquand: one saying he can send the books, and one apologizing for getting his name wrong. Brown, a famous book collector, always went by H. Tatnall Brown. The letters are tipped to the endpaper and verso of half-title page (across from title page). First printing, with "Lovely Pearl" on the first line of page 19, as we think it is in all first printings (changed to "Pretty Pearl" in later printings, as outlined in the current edition of our Collected Books). Faint vertical lines on some pages, as usual for this title, otherwise very good to fine in dust jacket with small professional repair at top of spine and to a few tiny chips. A very nice copy of an unaccountably scarce book, and particularly so with what would appear to be an early inscription, as both letters are dated in April 1939.

THE COMMON SENSE OF DRINKING

BOSTON, MASS: Little, Brown & Co., 1937. Fifth Printing. Hardcover. NEAR FINE / No Dustjacket. Peabody, of the Boston blueblood scions, was an alcoholic who helped pioneer the philosophy that alcoholism was an actual disease, rather than merely a weak constitution manifesting poor behavior. He went on to provide counseling services to many in NYC. It is generally regarded that some of his phrases ("Half-way measures were to no avail"; "Once a drunkard always a drunkard..." and even the step program were liberally made use of by Bill Wilson, who went on to found that famous recovery organization whose initials are the first letter of the alphabet, doubled. Silver-dollar-sized blemish in lower right corner of front board, no doubt from a drink (water we hope!) spilled at least a half-century ago, if not more. Extremely scarce in any edition.

. 61 Bl. / 43 Bl. + 14 w. Bl. (Seite a 21 Linien), Orig. linierte Schulhefte mit Rotschnitt, guter Zustand.. Weltkrieges. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl. VAT/TVA (only Switzerland) & postage.
