THE SUSSEX EDITION of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF RUDYARD KIPLING

, 1937. 1937. [in original paperboard cases] [In 35 Volumes.] London: Macmillan and Co., 1937-1939. Original full orange-brown Niger leather, in original ochre paperboard slipcases. This is the magnificent Sussex Edition of Kipling's Complete Works -- the most important and the scarcest edition of Kipling's Works. It is the most important for two reasons: because it contains so much new material not previously published in book form (two entire volumes, plus many additional pieces scattered among the other 33 volumes), and because it constitutes the "definitive edition" of all of Kipling's work, completely revised by Kipling during the final years before his 1936 death. It is the scarcest because only 525 sets (500 for sale) were created in the first place, and because "a substantial portion of this edition was destroyed in unbound sheets during the bombing of London in 1941" [Stewart]; it is quite likely that no more than 150 or 200 sets survive today, and many of those are in institutional collections.~The Sussex Edition was produced "on a lavish scale in order to provide a worthy monument to the genius of a great writer" [from the Prospectus]. The text was printed on handmade paper, with the first sheet of each signature bearing Kipling's ganesha watermark; those copies that survived the Blitz had earlier been bound in full "real Native Tanned Niger leather," natural orange-brown in color, with double gold frame rules on each cover, with lettering and rules in gold on the spines, and with gilded top edges of the leaves. The endpapers are hand-brushed marbled paper, surrounded by gold and blind fillets. In each set Volume I bears Kipling's signature, done on sheets for Macmillan before he died. The volumes were produced two per month, starting in mid-1937, but were sold only in sets at the price of two pounds ten shillings per volume.~This is set #221 and is in remarkably fine, bright condition -- virtually flawless other than a few trivial rubs. Some sets, over the years, have become much darker in color due to improper application of oil to the natural Niger leather bindings; however this set remains bright orange-brown, as it was issued. Furthermore, this set is still in the 35 original ochre-colored paperboard slipcases in which the volumes were issued; it is apparent that these slipcases, delicate and unprinted, were not intended still to be around seventy-five years later (the cases do have occasional minor edge-wear and damp-marking). Finally, loosely inserted into Vol I is the eight-page Prospectus for the Sussex Edition, issued while the volumes were being produced; it is folded and has some edge-wear. In all, one could not hope to acquire a more complete set or a finer set of the most important edition of the Works of Rudyard Kipling.

        The Trial

London: Victor Gollancz, 1937. London: Victor Gollancz, 1937. First English Edition; first edition in English; translated by Edwin and Willa Muir. This unfinished novel was published in German in 1925. An exceptional copy; very slight foxing; fine in a dust jacket with a little spine fading and minute wear; in a custom clamshell box. In our experience, this is, by far, Kafka?s scarcest English issued novel to find in anything approaching decent condition.

Movie Humor - April, 1937 Issue / George Quintana Good Girl Cover art, "Okay Toots"

Ultem Publications, Inc., New York 1937 - New York: Ultem Publications, Inc., 1937. April, 1937 Issue, Volume 3, No. 9. "Good Girl" pin-up cover art by George Quintana, "Okay Toots", signed by Quintana in the cover illustration as well. Contents are illustrated from photographs. Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 66 pp. Very modest age toning. traces of light soil at the covers, tiny amount of damage at the bottom of the spine, though the spine is complete. See scans. A high grade Near Fine copy, unusual in this fragile and inexpensively produced line of publication. A scarce and iconic issue from the pin-up pulp world of the 1930's, the covers of which, when executed by the likes of George Quintana, Enoch Bolles and Earle Bergey, would currently be dubbed "Good Girl" art. And, that they are. While Bolles covers are scarce enough, Quintana, about which very little else is known but that he painted such covers as these (see scan) is a harder find. Contents are mostly Hollywood studio-produced photos of leggy entertainers who are generally not dressed for the arctic, with plenty of rumor-mill type text as well. The humor derives from the quippy editor-inserted captions next to the photos, mostly cinematic stills. A genre classic for both cover and content- and condition. Report of the committee that opposed President Roosevelt's unsuccessful bill to expand the membership of the Supreme Court to include justices who would support his New Deal proposals. "Roosevelt lost the legislative battle, but won the war. His reforms were thereafter upheld by the Supreme Court. The ramifications on the court-packing controversy were significant. It shook the New Deal coalition that FDR had created costing him the support of some Democrats, many in the middle class and some Republicans as well. It augured an end to the social and economic reforms Roosevelt had begun. It reinforced the American people's understanding that law and politics should be separated, and that although the Supreme Court was not wholly above politics, it must not be converted into a political institution" (Hall). The inscriptions to the front free endpaper are by Marvel Mills Logan [1874-1939], a senator from Kentucky, and Lewis B. Schwellenbach [1894-1948], a senator from Washington. Both were Democrats who supported Roosevelt's plan. Logan writes: "My friend Joseph C. O'Mahoney [a Wyoming senator who opposed the Plan] thinks brochure is good and should be preserved. I think it is not worth 'hell-room' so I gladly give it to him with condemnation and compliments." Schwellenbach replies: "This work has attracted my complete admiration as to its form. Film Fun / November 1937 / George Quintana cover

New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937. New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937 New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937. August, 1937 issue. "Good Girl" cover art by George Quintana; contents are illustrated with photographs. Pictorial wrappers, 11 14/" x 8 1/2", 80 pp. Without doubt the highest-grade pulp of the "girlie" era I've ever seen. Very bright and colorful cover; minor rubbing at its far left; spine is complete, with a tiny nick at bottom; interior pages are lightly age-toned and almost without damage; still very supple. Near Fine, rather spectacular for an era pulp. A very rare and iconic survivor from the pin-up pulp world of the 1930's, the covers of which, when executed by the likes of George Quintana, Enoch Bolles and Earle Bergey, are now referred to as "Good Girl" art. And, that they are. While Bolles covers are scarce enough, Quintana, about which very little else is known but that he painted such covers as these (see scan) is a particularly hard find. Contents are mostly Hollywood studio-produced photos of stars, anchored by those of fetching female stars. Plenty of rumor-mill type text as well, and a few short blurb-reviews of films. Quippy and/or light-hearted editor-inserted captions accompany the photos, mostly cinematic stills. A rare genre classic for both cover and content. l-g2
