Adverse Report of The Committee on the Judiciary on a Bill to Reorganize the Judicial Branch of the Government. Stamford: The Overbrook Press, 1937. 46, [1] pp. Octavo (9-3/4" x 7"). Schwellenbach to front free endpaper, signatures of all ten committee members at end of report, signatures of fifteen other senators to rear endleaves. Text printed on wide-margined leaves and enclosed in scarlet double rules. A handsome book. * Privately reprinted from the U.S. Senate Calendar; Number 734. Report Number 711: June 7th 1937. Report of the committee that opposed President Roosevelt's unsuccessful bill to expand the membership of the Supreme Court to include justices who would support his New Deal proposals. "Roosevelt lost the legislative battle, but won the war. His reforms were thereafter upheld by the Supreme Court. The ramifications on the court-packing controversy were significant. It shook the New Deal coalition that FDR had created costing him the support of some Democrats, many in the middle class and some Republicans as well. It augured an end to the social and economic reforms Roosevelt had begun. It reinforced the American people's understanding that law and politics should be separated, and that although the Supreme Court was not wholly above politics, it must not be converted into a political institution" (Hall). The inscriptions to the front free endpaper are by Marvel Mills Logan [1874-1939], a senator from Kentucky, and Lewis B. Schwellenbach [1894-1948], a senator from Washington. Both were Democrats who supported Roosevelt's plan. Logan writes: "My friend Joseph C. O'Mahoney [a Wyoming senator who opposed the Plan] thinks brochure is good and should be preserved. I think it is not worth 'hell-room' so I gladly give it to him with condemnation and compliments." Schwellenbach replies: "This work has attracted my complete admiration as to its form. My deep affection for the senator from Wyoming causes me to withold [sic] my opinion as to

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Film Fun / November 1937 / George Quintana cover

New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937. New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937 New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937. August, 1937 issue. "Good Girl" cover art by George Quintana; contents are illustrated with photographs. Pictorial wrappers, 11 14/" x 8 1/2", 80 pp. Without doubt the highest-grade pulp of the "girlie" era I've ever seen. Very bright and colorful cover; minor rubbing at its far left; spine is complete, with a tiny nick at bottom; interior pages are lightly age-toned and almost without damage; still very supple. Near Fine, rather spectacular for an era pulp. A very rare and iconic survivor from the pin-up pulp world of the 1930's, the covers of which, when executed by the likes of George Quintana, Enoch Bolles and Earle Bergey, are now referred to as "Good Girl" art. And, that they are. While Bolles covers are scarce enough, Quintana, about which very little else is known but that he painted such covers as these (see scan) is a particularly hard find. Contents are mostly Hollywood studio-produced photos of stars, anchored by those of fetching female stars. Plenty of rumor-mill type text as well, and a few short blurb-reviews of films. Quippy and/or light-hearted editor-inserted captions accompany the photos, mostly cinematic stills. A rare genre classic for both cover and content. l-g2

Belaney was born in Hastings, on England's south coast, in 1888 and emigrated to Canada in 1906.:

        The Works

London: Macmillan and Company, 1937. London: Macmillan and Company,, 1937. [Including Plain Tales from the Hills; The Phantom Rickshaw; The Light That Failed; Gunga Din; The Jungle Book; The Second Jungle Book; Captains Courageous; Kim; Just So Stories.] 35 volumes, large octavo (250 x 167mm). Original full brown niger morocco, titles to spines gilt, raised bands, double line rule to boards gilt, top edges rough gilt, other edges uncut as issued. Internally nice and clean, a modicum of the usual entirely organic variation in colour and slight fading to the spines and some minor wear to a few board edges and spines. An excellent set. The Sussex Edition, the definitive edition of Kipling's works; one of a limited edition of 525 numbered sets signed by the author on the limitation leaf. During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, with a view to having them published in Britain (as here) and in America (the Burwash edition). In both cases, he signed sheets for the editions before his death and the editions appeared posthumously. Although 525 sets of sheets for the Sussex edition were prepared, far fewer were bound and many were lost to enemy action as they lay in the publisher's warehouse. This set is in particularly nice condition in the publisher's original binding.

        Espana en el Corazon

Ediciones Ercilla, Santiago de Chile 1937 - A worn, but complete copy of this scarce publication by one of Latin America's most prominent poets. Original self wrappers printed in red, gray and yellow, spine cracked and professionally reattached (lacking a small chip), wrappers soiled, and a dampstain affects the top edge of leaves throughout. Rare in the original wraps, most first edition copies have been rebound. Posted in Spain as a diplomat during the Spanish Civil War, Neruda became an ardent communist. This collection of left-leaning political poems is his reaction against Franco, exposing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and its fascist regime. Just two thousand copies of this original edition were produced, each containing 16 black and white photographic reproductions, as here. Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

        THE METAMORPHOSIS

Parton Press , 1937. Parton Press , 1937. First English language edition. Original blue cloth backed black boards with black titles on the spine and blue title label on the upper cover. A fine copy with just a touch of rubbing to the spine ends but a very bright, crisp example. Originally published under the title of Die Verwandlung in Leipzig in 1915, it was translated into English for this edition by A. L. Lloyd. Its perceptions make it one of the most significant works in the development of twentieth century consciousness. Vladimir Nabokov, who ranked The Metamorphosis second only to Ulysses in his critique of twentieth century prose, described Kafka as, "the greatest German writer of our time. Such poets as Rilke or such novelists as Thomas Mann are dwarfs or plaster saints in comparison to him." Born and brought up in Prague at a time when Czechoslovakia was trying to come to terms with the modernism of the surrounding world, Kafka was the son of a loud, robust, bourgeois father. This relationship was an uneasy one for the thin, academic and often awkward Kafka, and paternal themes permeate a lot of Kafka's work particularly this, his most famous work. It tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, a young travelling salesman who lives with his father and sister. He wakes up to find he has changed into a beetle, and cannot move easily or communicate with his family, who consequently turn their backs on him. Partly autobiographical, in an allegorical sense, it expresses Kafka's uneasy relationship with his family and is a reaction to a bourgeois and materialistic society in which the intellectual is regarded as 'vermin' to be restricted and crushed by economic and social demands.
