BLACK LEGION (156pp Original Mimeographed REVISED FINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY from the 1937 Humphrey Bogart Crime-Noir)

Burbank: Warner Brothers, 1937. (Bogart, Humphrey) Original 156pp mimeographed FINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY (complete with blue revision pages) for the 1937 Warner Brothers film BLACK LEGION starring HUMPHREY BOGART -- the story of an average guy who finds himself lured into joining a secret organization called the "Black Legion" modeled on the Ku Klux Klan with deadly consequences; it is based on the true story taken from the headlines of the day. THE BLACK LEGION served as a plum lead role for Humphrey Bogart during the era in which he was usually 2nd or 3rd billed and might have been a breakout role had Warner Brothers promoted the movie -- instead Bogart would have to wait four more years until THE MALTESE FALCON and HIGH SIERRA to achieve fame. The film was directed by Archie L. Mayo (with some assistance from Michael Curtiz...who later directed Bogart in CASABLANCA) and co-starred Ann Sheridan, Dick Foran, and Erin O'Brien-Moore. It was written by Abem Finkel and re-written by novelist William Wister Haynes. This original 1937 mimeographed script is housed in brad-bound pale blue original Warner Brothers covers which although labeled "Part 1" actually also contain within it parts 2 and 3 -- which were bound into the covers later as was often normal practice in that era of movie-making. Part 4 is a staple and paper-clipped 'added-last' separate section which follows on in the pagination perfectly but clearly no-one at the time bothered to remove the original brass brads and officially insert it...instead it was just stuck inside the back of the script -- which is how we found it. The screenplay is dated 8/1/36, with blue revision pages (dated 8/4/36) interspersed throughout. Contains studio perforated cover page used to keep track of the distributed scripts (receipt extracted here as is the norm). This final section is dated 8/25/36 and contains pages 141-156. The last two pages however are not stapled -- rather they are paper-clipped (old rust marks serve as evidence) and are ragged in appearance and the last page has unfortunately gone missing. Despite lacking the final page, it remains true that this is an exceedingly rare opportunity to own an original Bogart film script from the 1930s. After looking at auction records and library databases, there seems to be no other examples of this script to be found and this may be the only example to survive...not surprising as THE MALTESE FALCON (1941), a far-more-famous and high profile Warner Brothers script released at roughly the same time and looking extremely similar in appearance to this one, is known only by a few surviving copies. . Signed. Printed Wrappers. Very Good.

        Their Eyes Were Watching God

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1937. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. A lending library copy, with light stamps to the rear endpaper in the rare original dust jacket which has been adhered to the book and appears to have been trimmed at the bottom. Rare in the original dust jacket. For me, Their eyes were watching God is one of the very greatest American novels of the 20th century. It is so lyrical it should be sentimental; it is so passionate it should be overwrought, but it is instead a rigorous, convincing and dazzling piece of prose, as emotionally satisfying as it is impressive. There is no novel I love more" (Zadie Smith).

On the Mathematical Description of Light Nuclei by the Method of Resonating Group Structure" (Wheeler) WITH "Field Theory of Nuclear Interaction," (Kemmer) WITH "Visible Radiation Produced by Electrons Moving in a Medium with Velocities Exceeding that of Light" (Cherenkov) "Note on the Radiation Field of the Electron" (Bloch) WITH "The Low Frequency Radiation of a Scattered Election" (Nordsieck) in Physical Review 52, July to December 1937, pp. 54-59; pp. 59-62; pp. 378-379; pp. 906-910; pp. 1107-1122

FIRST EDITION VOLUME 52 OF THE PHYSICAL REVIEW HOUSING 5 IMPORTANT PHYSICS PAPERS. In "On the Mathematical Description of Light Nuclei by the Method of Resonating Group Structure" contains Wheeler's important introduction of the S-Matrix. In "Field Theory of Nuclear Interaction," Nicholas Kemmer proposes the first of two alternative currents required for electroweak synthesis. In "Visible Radiation Produced by Electrons," Pavel Cherenkov describes the theory of Cherenkov radiation, the effect wherein light emitted by a transparent medium when charged particles pass through it at a speed greater than the speed of light in the medium. "Cherenkov observed the emission of blue light from a bottle of water subjected to radioactive bombardment. This phenomenon, associated with charged atomic particles moving at velocities greater than the speed of light in the local medium, proved to be of great importance in subsequent experimental work in nuclear physics, and for the study of cosmic rays" (Wikipedia). In "Note on the Radiation Field of the Electron," Bloch and Nordsieck point out the limitations of QED at that time. Their work "shows how in field theory to avoid the infinity associated with the 'infra-red catastrophy' -- the emission of low frequency photons which tends to infinity in quantum theory (Hartman, A Memoir on the Physical Review," 168). Following this, Nordsieck then uses this new technique in calculating the radiative scattering of electrons in "The Low Frequency Radiation of a Scattered Electron." CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, July to December 1937. Quarto (10 x 8 inches; 250 x 203mm). Entire volume handsomely rebound in half black cloth over aged marbled paper boards. Gilt ruled and lettered at the spine. Ex-libris bearing only a small perforated stamp on the title page, a number on the publication page, and a stamp on the rear blank flyleaf; no other library markings whatsoever. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and very clean throughout. Near fine condition.

        FORBIDDEN ADVENTURE (ca. 1937)

Mapel Pictures / Roadshow Attractions 1937 - Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 105 cm.) one sheet poster, USA This is the USA release poster for the 1935 UK exploitation film ANGKOR. The film was a documentary in the "Mondo" style and initially consisted of a basic travelogue of footage shot in Cambodia supposedly during WWI telling the story of the sacred monkeys. The footage was actually stock footage, which the film makers spiced up by traveling to Los Angeles and hiring prostitutes from the well-known Selma Street brothel to cavort topless, the footage which was then inserted (they were menaced by a Gorilla in the "story.") Later USA reissues of this film used the titles FORBIDDEN ADVENTURE IN ANGKOR and THE GORILLA WOMAN. One of the finest posters in this tradition. On linen, VERY GOOD-FINE.

Dream Symbols of the Individuation Process

Bailey Island, Maine [1937] - First Edition. Quarto. A nearly verbatim transcript of C.J. Jung's 1936 seminar Dream Symbols of the Individuation Process at Bailey Island, Maine, based on the dreams of nuclear physicist and Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Pauli. From the library of noted photographer and patron of the arts, Dorothy Norman, with her (brief) notes in pencil throughout. The presentation was originally given in 1935 at the Eranoc conference in Ascona, Switzerland, and was later reworked in Jung's 1944 publication Psychology and Alchemy. Divided into a series of six lectures, given between September 20 and 25, 1936, the Bailey Island seminar was conducted in English in front of approximately 100 American analysts and was repeated in New York the following year. A valuable document on the development of Jung's theories of dreams, providing insight into his presentation techniques and thoughts on the relationship between physics and psychology. With eight loose typed pages, relating to the lectures, laid in. Short former owner's inscription (not Dorothy Norman), binding cracked but holding; a good copy in somewhat stained and mottled boards. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Original Book Illustration Art

This east coast book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet," "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears," "Whitetail: King of the Forest," "The Three Puppies," "The Small One," "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," "The Bluebird," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Enchantment of Santa Claus," "The Christ Child," "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens," "Polly Parrot," "Piccolino," "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko," written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book, from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages. Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards, most with the text blocks, pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page, these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present, and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature, though many contain pencilled coloring instructions, etc. Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century, and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years, from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s, etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George," which debuted in France in 1939. It's the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner, an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own, Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join, but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. Most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period.

The Nonesuch Dickens. The Complete Works of Charles Dickens

London: Bloomsbury, The Nonesuch Press, 1937-1938. Limited edition of 877 copies. Tall octavo. 23 volumes + an original etched steel plate. Printed on hand-made linen rag paper specially made for this edition. Copiously illustrated and hand-pulled from the original plates and blocks. The Nonesuch Press managed to purchase from Chapman and Hall, all the plates from which the original illustrations were printed and included one plate with each set. "Of these there are no more than 877 of major importance; and the edition has therefore been limited, not artificially but of necessity, to 877." Every one of these illustrations was made under the supervision of the author himself, often from his own suggestions. The steel plate included with this set is entitled "The Ghost's Walk", engraved by H.K. Browne ('Phiz') and numbered 698. It appears opposite p.512 in "Bleak House". Housed in its original custom made clamshell box with the binding uniform to the set, along with a letter of authenticity, signed by Arthur Waugh on Chapman & Hall letterhead. Linen buckram, with gilt stamped, black morocco-leather labels. From "The Nonesuch Dickens. A Note on the Format" by Francis Meynell: "... It is, of course, the general habit to give a set strict uniformity in its binding. But ... these volumes will be chosen from the shelves and read as books, not as numbered items of a set; why, therefore, should they not have their own individuality? ... All the volumes are bound in a uniform style and material and have similar labels, as befits a set: but each binding has been given a different colour, as befits a separate entity. The drabness of repetition is avoided, the principle of unity is maintained." Meynell chose buckram over leather for its range of colours and its durability. With this set, he has proved to be correct. Aside from some small minor scratches to the front cover of "Edwin Drood & Christmas Stories", and a very light stain to the front cover of "Oliver Twist", the set is fine, clean and bright without the usual fading. Unquestionably, one of the most complete and beautiful editions of Dickens' works. Podeschi, The Gimbel Collection, D212, Nonesuch Dickensiana 'Prospectus', Nonesuch Dickens. A Note on the Format.. Limited Edition. Hardcover.

BLAUE LICHT, DAS [BLUE LIGHT, THE] (1932; 1937 reissue)

Germany 1937 - Vintage original 9 ¼ x 11 ¾" (23 x 30 cm.) double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, Germany. Leni Riefenstahl, Mathias Wieman, Beni Fuhrer, Max Holzboer, Martha Mair, dir: Leni Riefenstahl; Sokal. A beautiful character portrait of the legendary actress, director, writer, editor and producer, Leni Riefenstahl. Riefenstahl performed all these creative tasks on this film for her own production company. This is the story of Junta, a woman hated by the people of her village, who suspect her of being a witch. She is the only person who can climb the nearby mountains and has discovered the mysteries of the blue light during her climbs. She is cast out of the town and goes to live in the mountains. She shares the secret of the blue light with one man, but he betrays her. Groundbreaking filmmaking at the time, it was an early sound film (though a silent version was also made) to be shot on high mountain locations and employed the people who lived in the mountains as the supporting players. Riefenstahl had made a series of mountain films with director Arnold Fanck in the years prior and was now ready to make her own films. So impressed by this film was Adolf Hitler that he asked Riefenstahl to make TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. Riefenstahl was a master in lighting and black-and-white photography, evident even in the still photography for this film. Her studio logos are at the bottom left and right margin edges, the title at center and a German blind stamp is at the lower right corner of the image. Slight corner edge wear only. This is still number 32. FINE.

Autograph Letter Signed, in French, 4to, n.p., n.d.

      - Pagnol most likely refers to his 1937 film "Regain" ("Harvest,") for which Swiss composer Arthur Honegger composed the music. The Marius trilogy (Marius, Fanny and Cesar), filmed between 1931 and 1936, are viewed as Pagnol's most important cinematic contribution. To Mr. E. Fasquelle, editor, Pagnol writes about film. "I had two parts in my film. One, where I had my characters speak. The other, where I left that to the cinematography and to Honnegger's [sic] music. The musical segments are very boring, I am told. I am in the process of cutting out as many as I can but it is a delicate thing because of Honnegger [sic], who is a charming lad." He signs in full, "Marcel Pagnol," then adds a note about having received payment.

[Culver City]: Selznick International, 12 June 1937.. [1],65,[1] leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in canary yellow stencil-printed studio wrappers. A few stray smudges and minor marks to wrappers, otherwise near fine. Denoted the "final shooting script" of Hecht's adaptation of a story idea by James H. Street, but in fact, an early draft in terms of the film's genesis. A number of notable script doctors were called in after Hecht disassociated himself from the production, allegedly over Selznick's refusal to cast John Barrymore in the lead. Among those contributing to the film's final script were Moss Hart, Sidney Howard, George S. Kaufman, Ring Lardner, Jr., and Budd Schulberg. Carole Lombard (in her only Technicolor film), Frederic March and Charles Winninger starred, under the direction of William Wellman. The film featured a score by Oscar Levant, Max Steiner, and others, and employed then innovative use of color process effects, montage and rear screen projection. Duplicate from the Selznick Archives.
