John Lane, The Bodley Head, London, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. John Goss (1894-1953), British singer, socialist, writer, scholar, and musicologist. He was well known as a singer and broadcaster on BBC radio in the 1920's and 30's. This was his only novel, written in Japan in the 30's where his wife was stationed at the British Embassy there. The central character in the novel is Albert Pumphrey who has been drafted to the foreign office & with many colourful & quirky characters and Goss's rich language and with his knack of bringing characters to life, it is a must read. This was his first and only novel. Book - in Good green boards with gilt lettering - some marking to the boards and slight bumping to the extreme corners and some bumping and slight wear to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, Book Plate of Geoffrey Garnier - See Note Below* - slight marking to the occasional page otherwise clean and tightly bound. *This is one of a collection of books from the estate of Jill & Geoffrey Garnier of Newlyn. Both Jill & Geoffrey became central figures in the later Newlyn School. The couple settled in Orchard Cottage, Newlyn, where they each had large studios built in the garden.         The Trial

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1937. Translated by Edwin and Willa Muir. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in dark blue. With the dust jacket. A superb copy in the jacket with faded spine. First edition in English, first impression, first published in German in 1925 as Der Process. The Muirs were instrumental in the publication of Kafka in English, and it was at their suggestion the Martin Secker undertook The Castle in 1930. In 1936 Secker went bankrupt and it was Victor Gollancz who issued the Muirs's version of the text that truly introduced the kafkaesque to the anglophone world, and it is their, perhaps questionable, rendering of the opening line, "Someone must have been telling lies about Joseph K …" that is widely considered as one of the greatest first lines in literature. An uncommon book, perhaps as few as 1000 copies having been sold. From the publisher's archive.

        La photographie n'est pas l'art *

G.L.M. Paris 13.5.1937.

        Serenade

Knopf 1937 - A fine first edition in a brilliant, fine dust jacket, inscribed in 1938 by James M. Cain to actress and dancer Lillian Powell. Lillian Ruth Powell (May 29, 1896 – May 31, 1992) was a Canadian-born American Denishawn- trained dancer who performed in early experimental silent film musicals. She would later teach dance and physical education before embarking on a nearly two decade career in television at an age when many are contemplating retirement. A review for one of her appearances described her as follows: Miss Lillian Powell, formerly of the big-time Eastern circuits, proved not only one of the most exquisite girls in physical charms, but also the most salient example of dancing grace ever seen in a West Coast theater here. Her numbers include an Oriental nautch dance, and later a famous Grecian balloon number, which the gifted young woman danced for Prince George of England recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks at Beverly Hills, when the son of King George visited Pickfair. Housed in a custom-made slipcase. One may assume that the 46 year old author inscribing this book would have had some interest in the famous dancer six years his junior, although the inscription is politely restrained.         The Normal Encephalogram. SIGNED BY LEO M. DAVIDOFF AND CORNELIUS D. DYKE.

Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger 1937. - 224 pp; 149 figs. Original cloth. Front cover unevenly sunned. First Edition. SIGNED BY LEO M. DAVIDOFF: "To our good friend/ Dr. C. A. Elsberg with/ compliments of/ Leo M. Davidoff/ and Cornelius D. Dyke." Inscription by Leo M. Davidoff, with signatures of both Davidoff and Cornelius G. Dyke. In the Preface, Davidoff and Dyke write: "Our thanks are due to Drs. Frederick Tilney, Charles A. Elsberg and Henry A. Riley for their valuable criticism and advice in preparation of the book" (p.7). "One of the greatest contributors to the development of neuroradiology was the neurosurgeon Leo M. Davidoff. . . . He was a surgical resident at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1924, and began his neurosurgical training there the following year. 'Davey' was one of Cushing's favorite disciples, and he is considered among the most skilled. After a period of study abroad, Davidoff joined the staff at The Neurological Institute of New York in 1927. He soon befriended and collaborated with Cornelius Dyke, a radiologist who had been trained by Sosman. Sparked by Dyke's interest in neuroradiology, Davidoff became a superb neuroradiologist. Their monograph, The Normal Encephalogram, published in 1937, remains a classic publication in the field of neuroradiology. The follow-up monograph, The Abnormal Pneumoencephalogram was published in 1950 with Bernard Epstein after Dr. Dyke's untimely death. These two classic publications changed the face of neuroradiological interpretation and education in this country. . ." (Dean J. Gobo, in Greenblatt (ed.), A History of Neurosurgery, pp. 231-32).         Film Fun - August 1937. George Quintana Cover, "Easy to Get Stuck On!"

Dell Publishing Co., New York 1937 - New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1937. August, 1937 issue. "Good Girl" cover art by George Quintana; contents are illustrated with photographs. Pictorial wrappers, 11 14/" x 8 1/2", 72 pp. Very remarkable condition for a softcover pulp of the era, clean and bright despite it's white cover, and with very little spine wear. Minor rubbing, toning to the pulp-paper contents, which are still quite supple. About near fine, for the genre. Sharp. A very scarce and iconic issue from the pin-up pulp world of the 1930's, the covers of which, when executed by the likes of George Quintana, Enoch Bolles and Earle Bergey, are now referred to as "Good Girl" art. And, that they are. While Bolles covers are scarce enough, Quintana, about which very little else is known but that he painted such covers as these (see scan) is a particularly hard find. Contents are mostly Hollywood studio-produced photos of stars, anchored by those of fetching female stars. Plenty of rumor-mill type text as well, and a few short blurb-reviews of films. Quippy and/or light-hearted editor-inserted captions accompany the photos, mostly cinematic stills. A rare genre classic for both cover and content. LBB-G [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

MacKenzie King typed signed letter (TSL ) marked "personal"

1937 - September 15, 1937, 8 x 6 1/4 inches, 4pp., Letter, is two (2) typed pages with MacKenzie's handwriting inserted, originally folded now flat, with 3/8 inch tear on top edge and 1/4 inch tear on bottom edge, otherwise very good condition. Typed signed letter (TSL) with MacKenzie King signature and mention of Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940 as well as WLMK's family roots connections.Dated September 15, 1937 on Laurier House, Ottawa letterhead where Mackenzie King resided as Prime Minister. Personal signed letter from Prime Minister Mackenzie King to Mary (Mrs. R.F. Scott) Toronto Ontario.Hand written salutation: My dear Mary:Typed body of letter: The last time I saw you was in the Gallery of the House of Commons on the day that Mr. Neville Chamberlain took his seat for the first time as Prime Minister. I was indeed sorry not to be able to have a word with you, either at that moment , or at any other in the course of our stay in London. My time , however, as you know was far from my own throughout the whole of that period .You may have seen that I visited Scotland before Going to the Continent and returning to Canada. While in Scotland, I visited the home in which my father ' s father , John King, was born. It is at Ladysford, near Tyrie , which is near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire . Mrs. Mary Scott, Toronto, Ont. A friend of MacKenzie's parents and whom he had ongoing personal correspondence with after this. WLKM had very few friends or family and rarely showed his private side in public which makes these type of personal communications insightful and rare. Highly collectable. This visit has caused me to gather together what information I can concerning my father's people. There was no one living, so far as I know who had the same knowledge of my father's father and mother as your own mother. I have always been under the impression that your father's people or your mother's people had been friends of my grandmother Macdougall through the Kings in Scotland .Among the records I have secured, there is one of an Alexander Thom who , in 1863, married a Jane King. As my father had a cousin named Jane , I am wondering whether this marriage might not, in some way have served to link our families . On the other hand, I run not at all sure that the Jane relationshipdid not come in from the Macdougall, rather than the King side, and it is quite possible thatyour mother s friendship my grandmother family was through the Macdougalls rather thanthrough the Kings.Do you by any chance recall anything Mrs . Thom may have told you concerning my father'sfather's people , or of my father ' s mother's people? Perhaps there is something your mother may havetold you that would be of interest, and would help me to trace further along the road of the past , thefamilies that have an immediate association. I shall not be surprised if you have no information or if I should find it difficult to secure much more than I already have. It is amazing how quickly the memories of those who have gone fade into oblivion.I hope you are keeping very well. With my kindest remembrances , Believe me , as always, MacKenzie King signature:Mrs. R. F. Scott, 5 Rosedale Road, Toronto, OntarioWilliam Lyon Mackenzie King, PC, OM, CMG (December 17, 1874 - July 22, 1950) was a Canadian lawyer, economist, university professor, consultant, civil servant, journalist, teacher, and politician. He served as the tenth Prime Minister of Canada from December 29, 1921, to June 28, 1926; September 25, 1926, to August 6, 1930; and October 23, 1935, to November 15, 1948. With over 21 years in the office, he was the longest-serving Prime Minister in British Commonwealth history. He is commonly known either by his full name or as Mackenzie King. His Grandfather was William Lyon Mackenzie, a journalist, politician and leader of the Upper Canada Rebellion. [Attributes: First Edition]
