        A Modern Jezebel

New York: Henry Holt and Company. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1937). First American Edition. Hardcover. [light bumping to top corners, slight fading to cloth at edges, spine a little turned; jacket well-worn at edges, with some paper loss at spine ends (just barely brushing the "A" in the spine title) and at a few corners, 1-1/2" closed tear and associated diagonal crease at bottom of front panel, internal tape-repair to section of front hinge]. Rare novel by the recently-rediscovered author, who perished at Auschwitz in 1942, about the life of a woman who, as the book opens, is on trial (at the age of 60) for the murder of her 20-year-old alleged lover. Described on the jacket blurb as "one of the most distinguished Russian writers of today," the author was indeed Russian by birth (1903), but her family left the country following the Revolution and soon settled in Paris, where she lived and wrote (in French) for the rest of her life. (She had been exposed to French as a child, through a governess, and also attended the Sorbonne.) She turned out fourteen published novels during her lifetime, but only two (this being the second) were published in the U.S., and her modern reputation is founded -- rather oddly, when you think about it -- entirely on "rediscovered" works that were published long after her tragic death. (Arrested during the Occupation by the French police as "a stateless person of Jewish descent" -- although she herself had converted to Catholicism in 1939 -- she was packed off to Auschwitz, where she promptly died of typhus.) .

        Serve It Forth

Harper & Brothers, New York 1937 - First edition, stated. Very good or better in a very good price-clipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing slight overall edgewear, an area of soiling to the upper front jacket panel at fore edge, slight toning to the jacket spine. Negligible offsetting to the front pastedown at the gutter. Boards slightly soiled, spine dulled. No markings or inscriptions. Sounds worse than it looks; all in all an appealing and entirely servicable copy of the author's first book, an auspicious debut that presaged a long and honored career. Quite a nice copy.         REX - CONTE DI SAVOIA. Die Touristenklasse "ITALIA" SCHIFFAHRTSGESELLSCHAFT-GENUA. Herausgegeben vom Propagandadienst der Schiffahrtsgesellschaft "ITALIA".

Milano (Mailand), Studio Editoriale Turistico, 1937.. Mehrfach gefaltetes, tls. farb. gedrucktes Plakat (ca. 59 x 89,5 cm).

Columbia Pictures Corp., 1937., 1937. Original color half-sheet movie poster for the 1937 film, based on the 1935 novel of the same name by Rex Stout. The second film adaptation to feature Stout's beloved character, Nero Wolfe. The first adaptation was MEET NERO WOLFE, in 1934, where Wolfe was played by Edward Arnold. Arnold did not wish to become identified with one character, and the role was handed to Walter Connolly for the second film, with Lionel Stander as Wolfe's cohort, Archie Goodwin. Alfred E. Green was the film's director; Guy Endore and Edward Chodorov were the screenwriters; and also starring in the film were Eduardo Ciannelli and Irene Hervey. The colorful sheet has one horizontal and one vertical fold crease with some light and faint old water stains along the outer margins of the right and left sides. None of the stains affect the art work and would be covered by a mat when framed. Quite presentable copy in very good condition.

        Original Van Vechten Portrait Photograph

New York: , 1937. Original sepia-toned silver gelatin print (226 × 164 mm). Presented in corner mounts behind double window mount. One or two tiny surface marks, slight surface rolling at the corners, but overall very well preserved with deep velvet tone. Thoughtful portrait study, signed and dated by Van Vechten verso in red ink in his characteristic minuscule handwriting; "photograph by Carl Van Vechten/ March 28, 1933-XII c: 4". Despite the variance in dating, the image appears to be number four of a series listed in the Library of Congress' collection as dating from March 28, 1937. The name "George Gershwin" is also pencilled across the back in signature style, this is in the handwriting of Irene Gallagher. Gallagher was Girl Friday to music publisher Max Dreyfus - the president of Chappell & Co., and publisher of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and Lorenz Hart - and knew all of the up-and-coming young composers of the day. This photograph is from her estate. Van Vechten met Gershwin in 1919 and was instrumental in his rise to fame, bringing the young composer together with adventurous Canadian-American mezzo Eva Gauthier whose annual concert at the Aeolian Hall for 1923 was entitled "Recital of Ancient and Modern Music for Voice", and featured songs by Byrd, Bellini, Bartok and Berlin, Hindemith, Schoenberg, Kern, and of course Gershwin; "Mr. Gershwin, at the piano, provided accompaniments which were something like works of art in their own genre, and in Mme. Gautheir's encore - his own Do it Again - raised a gale of laughter by slyly inserting a phrase from Scheherazade at an appropriate moment" (Musical America, November 10 1923). This was Gershwin's first appearance on a New York concert platform. In February 1924, Rhapsody in Blue was premiered at the same venue as part of the concert "An Experiment in Modern Music" featuring Paul Whiteman's Palais Royal Orchestra, it was reviewed by Van Vechten in Vanity Fair in an article entitled "George Gershwin: An American Composer Who Is Writing Notable Music in the Jazz Idiom", describing Rhapsody … as "the finest piece of serious music that had ever come out of America". This was the first and most important review that Gershwin was to receive, he had arrived.
