Contemporary blue half morocco by Brian Frost & Company, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands, blue cloth sides, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. 21 photographic plates. First edition, first impression of this collection of keenly observed biographical sketches of Victorian statesmen, Great War notables, and key political figures of the 1930s, including T. E. Lawrence, Trotsky, and Hitler; "We cannot tell whether Hitler will be the man who will once again let loose upon the world another war in which civilization will irretrievably succumb, or whether he will go down in history as the man who restored honour and peace of mind to the great Germanic nation and brought it back serene, helpful and strong, to the forefront of the European family circle." On receiving his advance copy, Neville Chamberlain wrote to Churchill immediately: "How you can go on throwing off these sparkling sketches with such apparent ease & such sustained brilliance, in the midst of all your other occupations is a constant source of wonder to me."         Savage Civilisation

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, , 1937. Octavo. Blue sand-grain cloth binding of the Times Book Club, title gilt to spine, their ex-libris supralibros to the upper board. Frontispiece and 31 other plates, numerous line-drawn illustrations to the text, 9 maps and plans, most full-page, the folding map not bound in and supplied from another copy. Just a little rubbed, light toning, some discolouration of the front endpapers from the inclusion of the Times obituary of Harrisson, turn-ins from the jacket loosely inserted. First edition. Uncommon, Harrisson's first book of anthropology based on the work of the Oxford expedition to the New Hebrides, for which he was officially the ornithologist; "When the rest of the Oxford party left Santo Island for home in 1934, Harrisson got to Malekula, where cannibalism was still widespread. Unarmed, barefoot, with no money, he made friends with the cannibals and took censuses that helped to disprove the then popular thesis that the islanders were dying out from a morbid despair caused by culture shock; he found instead that their numbers were increasing. Harrisson's focus had shifted from birds to people." (ODNB) On his return he installed himself in Bolton, which he disguised as Worktown in his publications, "to practise his birdwatching and 'cannibal-watching' techniques on the working poor of the north of England." In 1937 he joined forces with the poet Charles Madge and film-maker in the making Humphrey Jennings to do 'anthropology at home,' forming the highly influential Mass-Observation. This copy inscribed by Harrisson to George Hutchinson, a war-time M-O Observer, "hoping we may work together again in 1946(!) (war over?)" Described in his ODNB entry as "best-selling", and by the Times obituary as "well-received," this is a surprisingly difficult book to find, particularly as attractively provenanced as this.

A large spot on the front board, pencil and ink numbers on the rear fly (possibly from a private library) thus not quite very good in very good or better dustwrapper with faint wear. A fascinating travel book: in the winter of 1935-36, the Russian humorists Ilf and Petrov, authors of The Little Golden Calf and The Twelve Chairs, crossed the United States by Ford automobile and reported their findings back to the Russian people. The journey was re-created in 2008 by Vladimir Posner, Ivan Urgant and Brian Kahn fo rtheir travel documentary One-Storied America. A funny and insightful book, and the only the second copy we have seen in dustwrapper. .

        The Road To Wigan Pier

London: Gollancz,, 1937. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in yellow. With the dust jacket. 32 photographic plates. An excellent copy in the nicked and sunned dust jacket, somewhat dusty and with minor loss at the top of the spine panel and a couple of light ring marks to the upper panel. Exceedingly scarce in the dust jacket. First edition, first impression, trade issue. One of just 1000 published in this format. A review copy with the publisher's slip laid in. The other versions are in the familiar limp orange cloth of the Left Book Club. Copies of this seminal work of reportage in this state and condition are deeply uncommon. Probably more than in any of Orwell's other non-fiction, it is in these pages that large portions of his masterpiece 1984 first took form: most obvious perhaps the recurring image of womanhood as seen from a passing train, a woman grown huge from childbirth, up to her elbow in cabbage-odoured water, making a futile attempt to unblock a drain.

Esemplare ben conservato. Raro.

Enchanting Beauty (With A Print From The Book)

New York: Swan Publications, 1937. First edition. Fine in a near fine example of the publisher's pictorial box. A trace of soiling, one slight stain to the front of the box, otherwise bright and clean. Although not marked as such, this is one of the photographer's own copies, obtained from his estate. This copy accompanied by an untitled, unsigned gravure print, presumably hand-pulled, of the photograph reproduced on page 85 of the book, with the paper measuring 14 3/4 by 18 inches, the circular image 7 inches in diameter with a 1/4 inch margin. The print is in near fine condition, a few slight surfaces smudges, some very slight wear to the right hand edge. A sequence of production numbers in pencil to the lower left hand quarter. No information has come to light regarding the print, its origin or its intended end-use; apparently it was part of an unfinished and/or abandoned project, more than likely a portfolio produced some years after the book's publication. In any event a near fine example of the book, with a remarkable provenance, and an uncommon gravure print of one of the loveliest images in the book.

        Bibliography Of Cricket

privately, by the Author 1937 - Joe Goldman was the pre-eminent collector of cricket books and cricketana during the middle of the twentieth century. Part of his vast collection was dispersed in 1966 at Hodgson's Auction rooms in Chancery Lane, Holborn, fittingly some thought as Goldman was a solicitor. Quite apart from the list of items, which makes fascinating reading, the eye is drawn to approximations of values, which Goldman's makes a stab in some instances. 4to. 211pp. Black cloth with a colophon of the Goldman book-plate embossed on upper board, title in gilt lettering to spine. Dust-wrapper, torn in places, edges tatty, spine soiled. Presentation copy No.14 of a Limited Edition of 125, numbered and signed by the author.  [Padwick, 20]   [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Poems

Frensham Press, [Mittagong, NSW] 1937 - [30]p. Original cloth-backed, patterned boards featuring a lino-cut designed by Dobson with her initials, red paper label title on upper board. Moderate wear to the black cloth spine lacking several pieces but overall a lovely copy. The author's scarce first book restricted to 200 copies and published when she was only 17. Unrecorded by Farmer, Miller/Macartney and The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature and restricted to 200 copies. The Press was established by the Australian children's author Joan Phipson after she visited some private presses in England and consulted Leonard and Virginia Woolf at their Hogarth Press. Leonard Woolf was later to praise Dobson's book as equal to any of the initial efforts by the Hogarth Press. Dobson assisted Phipson in the book's production but was not fond of her first book. Her first commercially published work, In a Convex Mirror, did not appear until 1944. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
