        The Revolution Betrayed.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.,, 1937. What is the Soviet Union and Where is it Going? Translated by Max Eastman. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt and black on a red ground, top edge red, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Spine of price-clipped jacket sunned, some old tape repairs on verso, nicks, chips and tears. A very good copy. First US edition, first printing. Signed by Trotsky on a specially prepared sheet tipped in before the half-title: "Leon Trotsky, Coyoacán, 1 Apr 1937". One of a very small number of copies of an unnumbered limited edition, each signed and dated in the same manner. There is no formal statement of limitation for this issue, but copies do not appear frequently and Trotsky's popularity in the America of the New Deal was far from strong. We find it hard to believe that more than 150-200 copies were so issued. The Revolution Betrayed is Trotsky's major critique of Stalinism, and marked the end of the American intelligentsia's romance with Russian communism. Trotsky was living in exile in the Coyoacán district of Mexico City and in April of 1937 an independent "Commission of Inquiry" into the charges made against him and others at the "Moscow Trials" was held in Coyoacán, with the American philosopher John Dewey as chairman.

[Photo Album]: Navy World War II

South Pacific, Connecticut, and New Jersey. [circa 1937- early 1940s]. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". String-tied cream leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped on the front cover. A collection of 136 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 5" x 7" affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Near very good, the album has a detached front board with very good or better photographs, some with tape repairs. A photo album kept by a Navy seaman while serving in the Pacific in World War II featuring portraits and photos of his comrades. The photos show men working on ships including a nice amateur photo of sailors staring into the sunset. Two photos show a Navy baseball game on the beach likely somewhere in the South Pacific. A few photographs from the attack on Pearl Harbor are included but they appear to be contemporary reprints. The second half of the album shows photos of the sailor back in the United States in 1945 visiting people in Danubury, Connecticut, many times while still posing in uniform, as well as a trip to the Atlantic City beach with his girlfriend as well as Lake Oberst in Glassboro, New Jersey. An interesting collection of a sailor's wartime memories including friend's portraits and his joyous return home. .

The Commerce Clause Under Marshall, Taney and Waite, Inscribed by FF.

Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1937. 114 pp. Lightly shelfworn cloth in moderately worn and lightly edgeworn and moderately soiled dust jacket, faint dampstaining to rear panel. "Bob" is probably Robert H. Jackson [1894-1954], one of Frankfurter's closest friends. In 1936 Jackson was the assistant attorney general heading the Tax Division of the Department of Justice. He was attorney general from 1937 to 1941 and an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1941 to 1954.

1937. 1st Edition . No Binding. Good. TYPED & HANDWRITTEN LETTER by GEORGE GROSZ. TWO PAGE LETTER, addressed to AMERICAN ARTIST MARSHALL GLASIER, dated October 10, 1937. Typed and Handwritten on both sides of a single 8.5" x 11" sheet of "Douglas Manor" stationery, with the letterhead: "202 SHORE ROAD - DOUGLAS MANOR - LONG ISLAND - N.Y." (Douglas Manor hosted a thriving colony of various artists, including George Grosz.) The letter is typed on the front side and on half of the back side, is hand signed at the end of the typed portion, then handwritten for half a page beneath the signature. The handwritten portion is in Grosz's beautiful calligraphy, written with a fountain pen. The handwritten portion is significant both in size and subject matter, 19 lines, discusses artists, reason for his quitting teaching, and touches on the Spanish Civil War by mentioning fellow artists who went to Spain to fight with the Loyalists. The front typed side of the letter has a pencil margin note that is clearly in Grosz's hand, and a red pencil circling of one section. It also has a number of small, handwritten corrections, also in Grosz's hand.

        The Road To Oxiana.

London: Macmillan and co., 1937., 1937. First Edition. Octavo, pp.341 + 2 (advertisements). Bound in publisher's blue cloth, with gilt titles to spine. Illustrated with maps and photographs. Minor wear to extremeties, some fading to spine. Internally clean, including the photographs. Byron, who died young in the Second World War, was one of the Brideshead set immortalized by Evelyn Waugh, but he was also the foremost travel writer of his age. He is best known for The Road to Oxiana, a description of his journey in 1933-34 through modern Iran and Afghanistan. Paul Fussell recently suggested that what Ulysses is to the novel and what The Waste Land is to poetry, Byron's book is to travel writing.         Icy Hell.

London: Constable, 1937. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. 308. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, titled in gilt to spine, in the scarce photographic dustjacket. Cloth shows very minor edgewear, gilt remains neat and bright, superficial indentation to rear board, otherwise a fine example. Top edge coloured dark blue (a little sunned towards spine), fore edge age toned, tail edge roughly trimmed. Dustjacket is excellent, priceclipped, not typically included. A little soiled to the white rear panel with some light chipping and edgewear, but in the main: clean and bright. A rare early autobiography of a news reel cameraman of the twenties and thirties as he documents Eastern Siberia, and more. Illustrated with full page photographic plates (which are fantastic), and a folding map to the rear. A truly fascinating and uncommon item, from the other side of the lense.

Strain on hinges with sellotape repairs attempted between title pages. Foxed. Minimal interior red colour run to rear ep. Inscriptions on inside front cover. Sound content. Technically Poor. X. 1936).

London, Macmillan and Co. 1937 - 2 vols. First Edition. 8vo. Fine in publisher's bright red cloth, light bumping to spine ends. In near fine wrappers, price clipping to volume 2, slight sunning to spine panel. A scholarly application of Keynes' theories to a number of different questions. Published in the same series as his General Theory, which is in fact advertised on the spine panel; a most important work from Britain's leading female economist of the twentieth century . Joan Violet Robinson FBA [1903-1983] was a post-Keynesian economist who was well known for her knowledge of monetary economics and wide-ranging contributions to economic theory.
