On the interaction of elementary particles II [- IV]. 3 parts

1937-38 1937 - First Japanese Physicist to Win the Nobel Prize in Physics Yukawa, Hideki (1907-81). (1) [with Shoichi Sakata] On the theory of the -disintegration and the allied phenomenon. Offprint from Proceedings of the Physico-Mathematical Society of Japan, 3rd series, 17 (1935). 467-479pp. Original printed wrappers. Presentation Copy, inscribed "With the compliments of the authors" on the front wrapper. (2) [with Sakata] On the theory of internal pair production. Offprint from Proceedings of the Physico-Mathematical Society of Japan, 3rd series, 17 (1835). 397-407pp. Original printed wrappers. Presentation Copy, inscribed "With the compliments of the authors" on the front wrapper. (3) On a possible interpretation of the penetrating component of the cosmic ray. Offprint from Proceedings of the Physico-Mathematical Society of Japan, 3rd series, 19 (1937). [1], 712-713pp. 271 x 195 mm. (4) [with Sakata, Taketani and Minoru Kobayasi] On the interaction of elementary particles II [-IV]. Parts II and IV are offprints from Proceedings of the Physico-Mathematical Society of Japan, 3rd series, 19 (1937) and 20 (1938); Part III is a mimeograph typescript bound similarly to the other two offprints. Original printed wrappers. Together 4 items in 6 parts. 260 x 188 mm. Spine of no. (4), Part III split at extremities, light vertical creasing. Light browning, but very good. First Editions, Offprint Issues; First Separate Edition (?) of no. (3), Part III. In October 1934 Yukawa, then a lecturer in physics at Osaka Imperial University, proposed a unified theory of nuclear forces in which a set of hypothetical particles—now known as mesons—was responsible for the force binding positively charged protons and neutral neutrons together in atomic nuclei. The following year Yukawa published his paper "On the interaction of elementary particles" (not offered here), in which he set forth his meson theory, calculated the mass of the proposed particle (about 200 times that of the electron) and suggested that these particles might be present in cosmic rays. In 1936 Anderson and Neddermeyer reported anomalous cosmic-ray tracks made by particles intermediate in mass between the electron and proton; their observations were confirmed in early 1937 by several other cloud-chamber groups. In June 1937 Oppenheimer, Serber and Stueckelbert sent letters to the Physical Review calling attention to Yukawa’s meson theory, and from then on its success, and that of its author, was assured. In 1949 Yukawa received the Nobel Prize for physics for his prediction of the existence of the meson. Despite its later success Yukawa’s meson theory attracted almost no attention in the two years following its announcement, largely because physicists were reluctant to accept the possibility of a new particle without direct observation confirmation. During this fallow period Yukawa published several joint papers with his student Shoichi Sakata on electromagnetic and nuclear phenomena. We are offering the first two of these joint papers in rare offprint form with even rarer presentation inscriptions. The paper on beta disintegration (no. [1] above]) is remarkable in that it contains the only other published reference to the meson prior to 1937. This paper includes "an important calculation of the inverse beta-decay process: the absorption of an orbital electron by a nucleus with the emission of a neutrino. [The paper] was noteworthy, not only because it was the first to call attention to a new effect but also because it was the first additional application of the meson theory [emphasis ours] and thus showed that Yukawa and Sakata had faith in it" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography [Supplement]). In 1936, heartened by Anderson and Neddermeyer’s discovery of a new unidentified particle in cosmic rays, Yukawa returned to meson theory. (It should be noted that Anderson and Neddermeyer’s particle, although widely assumed at the time to be the one predicted by Yukawa, is in fact a decay product of t [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        An Essay on Flecker

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran, 1937. First American Edition. Softcover. Very good. 4 pp, in stapled wrappers with light handling wear, a few tiny spots to front wrapper. Compliments slip from the Keeper, Department of Printed Books at the Bodlein Library, Oxford, laid in. According to O'Brien (A199), this essay was written in 1925 for publication in a periodical, but did not appear in print until 1937. The English edition published by Corvinus Press was limited to 30 copies, while "56 copies were printed to secure American copyright." It later appeared in Men in Print (1940). Lawrence met poet and British civil servant James Elroy Flecker and his wife in Lebanon in 1911. He visited them several times, and in 1913 worked with Flecker in smuggling some rifles from a British ship in Beruit harbor to the British consulate in Aleppo (Tabachnick, p. 58-59).

0 gr.

Qué Haces tú para Evitar Esto? Ayuda a Madrid. [Cartel original de la Guerra Civil Española.]

Ministerio de Propaganda, s.l. (Madrid) 1937 - 39.5x27.5.

The Late George Apley: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir

Little, Brown & Co. 1937 - First printing (cr: P date). With "Lovely Pearl" at top of p. 17 although the significance of that alleged point of issue is unclear. Blue cloth, gilt titles to spine and front board. Red topstain. Book very good with faint vertical streaks to a number of pages evidently caused by a malfunction on press and common to this title. Topstain shows some evidence of waterspotting. Inscribed by Marquand and dated 01/37 on a tipped-in leaf that has come unbound from ffep. DJ essentially whole but with a brown paper backing applied to reverse; evidently for preservation as it also shows evidence of waterstaining, small holes/wear at spine, esp front spine fold. Also age-discolored with several small surface tears to front panel. Price of $2.50 however is intact. Rare, both in first and signed. 354 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America, November & December 1936

[Washington, D.C.]: United States Printing Office, 1937. First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 4to. Bound in full light bown pigskin, with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover, now with a fine patina, pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book, commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain, though undoubtedly strictly limited, number, with two issues--in full pigskin, as seen here, and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies, with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved (cf. Horowitz, "Carmichael Collection") and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin - See more at:

On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem' [with:] 'On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem. A correction.' [in:] Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, series 2, vols 42-3

London, C.F. Hodgson and Son, [1936-] 1937 - Two vols, 8vo (253 x 165 mm), I pp 230-265 (the entire vol [iv] 559 [1, blank] with folding table); II pp 544-546 (the entire vol [iv] 546); fine, clean copies in contemporary or near-contemporary brown buckram, one corner slightly bumped, no institutional markings, slight discolouration to the loweer front cover of the second volume. £18,500First edition of the journal appearance (there was also a very rare offprint) of Turing's great paper, the conceptual foundation of modern computing. In this paper Turing proved that there were uncomputable numbers, in other words that there were existed mathematical problems that were unsolvable and therefore that mathematics was undecidable. In so doing he also established that the 'Turing machine' (a name coined by Church) would be able to compute all computable numbers. In 1928 David Hilbert had posed the Entscheidungsproblem, the outstanding problem of mathematical logic at the time. This asks whether there is an algorithm that can determine whether any given mathematical statement is true or not. 'Inspired by the human computer (i.e., the human engaged in computation), Turing described a notional machine that could read and write symbols along a segmented tape. The machine itself would be capable of assuming various internal states that, together with the input of a single symbol along the tape, could lead to a few primitive atomic actions. Based on the state and the current symbol, each configuration specifies a change (or not) of symbol, a move right or left, and a next state. Working under some straightforward assumptions about the finite and discrete nature of the machine, Turing was able to demonstrate the wide range of numbers (equivalently, the wide class of functions) that could be computed and, moreover, able to specify a single machine, the universal machine, that would be capable of simulating the computations of any such machine. Turing's characterization has come to be seen as a more compelling account of what it means to be effective, mechanical, or algorithmic than any of the various extensionally equivalent formulations offered by his contemporaries' (New Dictionary of Scientific Biography v 7 p 83).The Correction was published in order to remove some formal errors made in the first paper which had been spotted by the Swiss mathemtician Paul Bernays.Origins of Cyberspace 394; Tomash and Williams T61, T62

An important relic of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, collected by the chief boatswain in charge of the mooring lines at Lakehurst?who was also a survivor of the Shenandoah

[Lakehurst, NJ], [May 6, 1937]. 27". "A 27"" length of rope, recovered from the wreck of the Zeppelin airship, Hindenburg, after it crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. Expected wear. One theory behind the start of the blaze that so rapidly engulfed the Hindenburg, was that when the mooring ropes made contact with the ground, they completed a circuit allowing a buildup of positively charged ions to make ground which initiated a spark. However, this, like many theories surrounding the airship disaster, remain inconclusive to this day.The rope was recovered by Frederick J. ""Bull"" Tobin (1892-1978), one of the chief boatswains managing the mooring lines at Lakehurst, New Jersey when the Hindenburg caught fire and crashed to the ground in flames. Tobin became famous for ordering the fleeing ground crew back to their posts in order to assist the survivors. Twelve years earlier , Tobin survive the crash of the airship U.S.S. Shenandoah in southeastern Ohio. He had been asleep near the tail of the airship at the time, and managed to escape just as the rear section crashed to Earth (John Toland, The Great Dirigibles: Their Triumphs and Disasters, 1957, p. 140-141, 328)."

Large and striking relic of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, collected by the chief boatswain in charge of the mooring lines at Lakehurst?who was also a survivor of the Shenandoah

[Lakehurst, NJ], [May 6, 1937]. 9" x 3" x 4". "A section of struts, constructed of aluminum alloy, 9"" x 3"" x 4"", recovered from the wreck of the Zeppelin airship Hindenburg after it crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. Expected wear consistent with exposure to fire. This girder section is strikingly light being made of Duralumin, an age-hardenable aluminum alloy developed by Alfred Wilm. Its primary use was for airship frames and all of the great airships of the 1920s and 1930s used this material. The strut section was recovered by Frederick J.

Kyskhet. Ett spel för teatern i prolog och fem akter.

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1937. Originalupplaga. 19,5x13 cm. 194 s.

Two volumes of uncollected prose and much verse are here collected for the first time. This de luxe, signed edition was published after the author?'s death by Macmillan & Co. and is limited to 525 sets of which 500 are for sale. Unfortunately, a substantial portion of the edition was destroyed in unbound sheets during the bombing of London in 1941.?" (Stewart. Rudyard Kipling a Bibliographical Catalogue, Toronto, 1959, p. 577.) The Sussex Edition was envisioned by his long-time publisher Macmillan as a monument to Kipling.Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honors, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism".Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "He [Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with."Stewart, p. 577.
