Exceedingly Rare and Important Typed Letter Signed as "Eliahu Epstein

Jerusalem, 1937. unbound. 1 page on "Palestine Review" letterhead, 10.25 x 8 inches, Jerusalem, May 3, 1937. Written to fellow Zionist Heinrich Margulies, Director of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, Tel Aviv, in part: "I am glad you are giving us your co-operation, for I am anxious to make our paper not only an interesting but also an authoritative journal. In regard to the subject we discussed in our editorial 'East of Suez', we did not lay down permanent principles but rather referred to passing winds. It is our purpose to keep our readers both here and abroad well abreast of movements affecting the welfare of this country and we believe that we should not conceal facts which may not be palatable.I think also that you will agree that British policy, not only in regard to Zionism, has not always been consistent but is liable to fluctuation. In regard to Alexandretta, our comment has been on the lines which you suggest. I shall certainly be glad to take advantage of your suggestion to meet and discuss this and similar matters in person. I wonder why you wrote your article in German, since your English letter shows that you have a command of this language too." Note: Alexandretta was an area traditionally considered part of Syria that came under Turkish control in 1938. Israeli archives offer interesting insight into Epstein / Eilat's conduct with the posting of the following: "Eliyahu Epstein visited Iraq in February, 1937, pretending to be a journalist. Epstein was concerned about the Pan-Arab and pro-German spirit among the youth." Another document states: "Eliahu Sassoon and Eliahu Epstein, two officials of the Jewish Agency's Political Department, paid an eight-day visit to Iraq. Epstein was in touch with British political circles." There is little doubt that Epstein / Eilat was more concerned with intelligence gathering rather than journalistic endeavors. Natural folds and light creasing; two holes punched in the left margin with tearing. Otherwise in very good condition. A champion of the Zionist cause who helped found the State of Israel. In 1934 he became the head of the Political Department of the Jewish Agency, which itself was the precursor to the Israeli Government that was created at the nation's independence in 1948. It was Eilat who sought and received President Truman's recognition of Israel's establishment as a state. He was also Israel's first Ambassador to the United States upon its founding.

        Great Contemporaries

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a fine British first edition, first printing in a first printing dust jacket. Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals some of his own character and perspective. Churchill's portrait of T.E. Lawrence, published here just a few years before the Second World War, might well have been written about the author rather than by him: "The impression of the personality of Lawrence remains living and vivid upon the minds of his friends, and the sense of his loss is in no way dimmed among his countrymen. All feel the poorer that he has gone from us. In these days dangers and difficulties gather upon Britain and her Empire, and we are also conscious of a lack of outstanding figures with which to overcome them. Here was a man in whom there existed not only an immense capacity for service, but that touch of genius which everyone recognizes and no one can define." (Great Contemporaries, p.164) While some of the subjects of Churchill's sketches have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. This is as engaging a read today as it was in 1937. Here is a collector-grade copy, fine in a very good, unclipped first printing dust jacket. Collectors should note that the first printing dust jacket is unique, with changes to the front flap on the second and subsequent printings. The binding is beautifully square, clean, bright, and tight, with vivid gilt and sharp corners. We note only a touch of wrinkling at the spine heel. The contents are likewise notably bright and clean. We find no previous ownership marks. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The blue-stained top edge is clean and retains uniform, unfaded color. A trace of spotting appears confined to the bottom edge of the text block and a single, tiny spot on the fore edge. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price. The vivid orange color remains very good, just slightly darkened on the jacket spine. Losses are quite modest, confined to fractional loss at the corners and spine heel, a .5 x .5 triangular loss at the upper rear hinge, and just a little loss accompanied by some wrinkling associated with a one inch closed tear at the upper front hinge. A few other short closed tears at the extremities show no loss. There is vintage brown tape reinforcement on the backside of the jacket at the spine ends. A 2 x 1.5 inch semi-circular stain at the front panel fore edge is the only blemish of note. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Marquand on the front free end paper, and again on the title page. Bump to top of boards and bottom of spine. Stain to top and edge of page block, affecting text on several pages. Occasional streaked browning to pages, which appears to be a common issue with this title on account of the acidic paper stock used. Hinge at title page lightly exposed.         Sandpaintings of the Navajo Shooting Chant

J.J. Augustin, 1937. 1st. Bound in a heavy-weave orange burlap, this is the 1937 1st trade ed. With 35 gorgeous color plates silkscreened on Japanese paper. Some of the orange from the binding has bled onto the upper part of the last 10 plates. Also, some fraying to the top and bottom of the spine. The binding though is still very sturdy. This was a fragile book even when issued and, no doubt, even the very best copies must be treated gingerly. With this copy two prospectuses have been laid in, one from the autographed edition of the same title(only 250 autographed copies) and the other from "Navajo Medicine Man: Sandpaintings and Legends of Miguelito", another title published by J.J. Augustin and written by Gladys Reichard. Signed by Author(s).

Manuscript] Statement regarding Franklin D. Roosevelt's attempt to enlarge the Supreme Court.

1937 - written in black ink on 'Long Key Fishing Camp' headed paper, a few deletions, corrections and insertions by the author, including two false starts at head, pp. [2], 4to, a few creases to corners and light handling marks, good condition. Grey is here responding to a request from C.K. Gregg, of the Society for Preservation of American Ideals and Form of Government, soliciting the author's opinion on this matter - a photocopy of this letter and the George Ade article that accompanied it are included here. Grey writes: 'The constitution is, and has always been, in spite of changes in our ways of living [.], the bulwark of our national liberty; our defense against dictatorship and radicalism. With the fight being waged by labor at present, which to me is none less than a miniature scale of what is happening in Europe - of course, minus a good deal of the bloodshed - the Supreme Court is the one check in the complete freedom of government that could well be filled with more radicalism or desire towards dictatorship than it is today. It is not only what President Roosevelt might do with more freedom, it is what future men might do under the stress of the stronger conflict of ideas [.]'. An impassioned response to an important question, otherwise unpublished - Roosevelt's initiative was well-opposed and ultimately unsuccessful at this time. (Plus VAT in the EU)

        Medieval English Pavingtiles

Shakespeare Head Press Saint Aldates, Oxford 1937 - A fascinating look at what was, and remains, a neglected area of Medieval decorative arts. 4to. 26 by 20 cm. 327 pp. Red over the cream paper illustrations on most pages -- well over 225 illustrations. Most pages with two tile specimens and a caption, sometimes long, explaining where the specimen is located and occasionally more background about the specimen. The specimens show the wide range of Medieval or Gothic creativity, all the time while working within some conventions. Also examples of lettering, which may be a topic of particular interest. The paper used in the book was a luxuriant stock with a high linen count. The cloth on the boards has moderate soiling. Foxing on the endpapers. A few minor rub spots on the leather. Nonetheless, this is a very handsome copy which overall we would consider near fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Towards Armageddon The Defence Problem and its Solution

Lovat Dickson, London 1937 - Beautifully preserved copy of this very scarce first edition. The dust jacket has only very minor edge wear and a touch of fading to the spine. See pictures. Not price clipped. The book is in very clean and fresh condition. Most importantly the book is inscribed to "Boney" Fuller's mother from the author and reads: "To Mother with love from the author, her son, John. 29.4.37. It is further later inscribed in light pencil by Fuller's brother, AWF Fuller who was famous in his own right, "AWF Fuller from Mother" then there is a further note/annotation from AWF Fuller commenting on how unworthy the comments in a newspaper article (laid in) were about his brother. In essence he defends his brother in the notes. This is a truely exceptional copy and an important piece of military history. Boney Fuller was at the forefront of armoured and tank warfare, when many around him were doubters of its capabilities. Some say that if the First WW had gone on another year the Boney would have been more famous than Montgomery later was due to the massive tank battle which was planned for 1919. J.F.C was also a colourful character because of his early dabblings in esoteric matters and the occult, particularly in his association with Aleister Crowley. Later he is said to have been a Nazi sympathizer and Oswald Moseley supporter in the 1930s. Part of a collection obtained from family members. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
