1937 - CAIN, James M. Serenade. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1937. Octavo, original black cloth decorated in silver, original dust jacket. $2000.First edition of Cain’s bold second novel, book and striking dust jacket designed by W. A. Dwiggins, warmly inscribed by the author, “To Dora Einzig, with love and kisses, James M. Cain, July 15, 1938.”Exploring many of the same themes as his acclaimed first novel The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), this novel was “daring for its period in its presentation of a bisexual hero” (Encyclopedia of Literature, 196). Cain would recall, “This story goes back to my try-to-be-a-singer days… It cooked until 1937, when I went to Mexico and got it over with” (University of Maryland, Cain Collection). “A complex and bravura blend of exotica, opera and murder… Serenade was well-reviewed and remains widely admired. Some people consider it Cain’s best book” (Smiley & Bell, 41). nfluential book artist William Addison Dwiggins designed both the volume and its dust jacket, which on this copy is printed with red as the dominant color; no priority established. “Only rarely was Dwiggins involved with dust wrappers, and this was one of his best efforts” (Smiley & Bell, 41). Owner signature.Faintest foxing to front free endpaper. Small and light marginal staining to several leaves, seldom affecting text. A few minor abrasions to fresh, bright boards, gilt decorations quite bright and attractive. Fragile original dust jacket with mild edge-wear and modest toning. A very good copy, scarce inscribed.         [George VI in Scottish Regimental Uniform]

1937. Mezzotint. Proof before letters. Signed in pencil in bottom left corner of plate. Title space uncleaned. Printed on thick wove paper. In excellent condition. 23 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches. A striking mezzotint portrait of King George VI in traditional Scottish dress by Henry Macbeth-Raeburn's, the celebrated Scottish engraver. This superb portrait of the King appears to have never been published. It is a strong depiction of the king greatly honored for his leadership and example through World War II and an excellent example of Macbeth-Raeburn's mastery of the art of mezzotint portraiture,as practiced in the late 18th century. Henry Macbeth-Raeburn was a noted Scottish painter and mezzotint engraver active in Edinburgh during the 1920's. He was a member of the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers, and Engravers. He is known today for his stylish mezzotints after celebrated eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, which reproduced with accuracy and finesse the glory of these earlier masters. He had a penchant for the paintings of Reynolds, Gainsborough, and Sargent and produced many fine prints after their celebrated works.       SEUSS, DR.. SEUSS,DR. AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET. NY: Vanguard Press (1937 Second printing). 4to (8 1/2 x 11"), pictorial boards, Fine in dust wrapper (Marco's shorts are blue on dw and book). This is a remarkable copy with none of the edge wear usually found and with just a touch of toning on the white paper spine. The dust wrapper has minimal soil and a few small tears but is one of the nicest we've seen. This was Seuss' first book for children, brightly illustrated in full color and this copy is SIGNED BY SEUSS (on verso of free endpaper). It's interesting that by the second printing the price on the dust wrapper had already gone up to $1.25 from the original $1.00. If you can't buy a first printing, this is a great alternative to add to a Seuss collection.

Marcel Pagnol on the set of "Le femme du boulanger" [The Baker's Wife] (1938)

N.p.: N.p., 1937. Vintage double weight photograph from the 1938 film. A candid, on-the-set photograph by the film's credited still photographer, Roger Corbeau, of a cafe scene featuring the film's principal character (actor Raimu), with the camera crew just to the left, in the shadows, the borders of the studio set clearly visible. With Roger Corbeau's photo credit ("PHOTO ROGER CORBEAU") at the bottom left of the frame. On the verso is a rubber stamp for the Cinémonde Archives. An extraordinary "fourth wall" shot, demonstrating at once the method and the magic of Pagnol's filmmaking, as well as his relentless interest in provincial life in France. In this film, a new baker, Aimable (Raimu) settles down in a small French village. His wife Aurelie is beautiful and much younger than he. She departs with a shepherd the night after Aimable produces his first breads. Aimable is so afflicted that he cannot work anymore. The villagers, who initially laugh at his cuckoldry, soon take the matter very seriously (they want the bread), and organize a plan to find Aurelie and to bring her back to the bakery and her husband. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.25 by 7 inches. Four tiny single pinholes at the corners, within the white marginal border. Near Fine overall.

1930's concept car design

1937. Mixed media on paper. Exquisite drawing of a 1930's concept car The old, established Willoughby firm of Utica, New York had a reputation for conservative, quality coachwork in 1930 when Viennese born Hoffmann was hired as draghtsman/designer. He quickly moved the company's design philosophy to the forefront of the streamline school, translating traditional luxury car body types such as this touring car into the modern idiom. Willoughby designed bodies for all the major luxury car firms. We have attributed this drawing to Hoffman on the basis of a very similar drawing of the period that was acquired in 1985 from Hoffmann's widow, clearly done by the same hand and exhibiting the same exquisite touch and sense of proportion.

        Federal Theatre Bulletin / Magazine

New York, New York: Federal Theatre Project / Works Progress Administration, 1937. Hardcover. Good (Ex-lib., heavy markings; Some pages worn around edges; Cloth worn at extremities). Red cloth library binding; Approx. 200 pp.; Profusely illustrated in bw. Seven bulletins of the Federal Theatre Project, a Works Progress Administration New Deal project designed to employ out-of-work artists, writers, and directors while providing art and entertainment for poor families; The FTP became most well known (and in some cases reviled) for their Living Newspaper plays--plays based on newspaper articles, often with a leftist bent; Includes articles about current projects and issues within the FTP, including creating plays, ballets, and the like, costuming, audience reactions, and more; A fascinating look at an early twentieth century government program. Includes several colored lithographs. Contained in this bound volume (labeled Vol. 1 NO. 1-6; Vol. 2 NO. 1-5 on the spine) are the following issues: Vol. 1 No. 1, third printing Feb. 25, 1936; Vol. 1 No. 2 Dec. 1935; Vol. 1 No. 3, no date cover broken off towards spine; Vol. 1 No.4 (beginning the larger format of this publication) March 1936; Vol. 1 No. 5 May 1936 (may be missing front cover if issued); Vol. 1 No. 6 [no date but eighth month, may also be missing front cover if issued). Vol. 2 No. 1 no date, may be missing a front cover if issued; Vol. 2 No. 2 no date but library stamp from Nov. 1936, may be missing front cover if issued; Vol. 2 No. 3 no date but appears to be circa January 1937; Vol. 2 No. 4 may be missing front cover if issued, no date, but library stamp of March 1937; Vol. 2 No.5, no date by library entered date of June 1937, may be missing front cover if issued. It is possible that each cover of these later issues was a colored ithograph, and thus removed by this particular library for archival purposes, but this seems unlikely. However, each of these issue does have a rear cover of thicker, sturdier paper which is usually matched with a similar type of cover material on the front cover, hence the statement that front covers *may be missing* from these issues. The first three issues of Volume 1 are very cheaply produced on what could be guessed to be a mimeograph machine, and the sheets are fragile and exhibit minor loss here and there.Though the masthead on the top of the front page says this is a Bulletin, the rear cover of the later issues state that this is a magazine available for sale at many listed locations.
