        The Works.

London: Macmillan and Company,, 1937. [Including Plain Tales from the Hills; The Phantom Rickshaw; The Light That Failed; Gunga Din; The Jungle Book; The Second Jungle Book; Captains Courageous; Kim; Just So Stories.] 35 volumes, large octavo. Original full tan niger morocco by James Burn & Co. for Macmillan, titles to spines gilt, raised bands, double line rule to boards gilt, top edges rough gilt, other edges uncut as issued, marbled endpapers, twin gilt and blind rules to turn-ins, printed on handmade paper, the first sheet of each signature bearing a Ganesha watermark. Volumes individually housed in orange paperboard slipcases as issued. A fine set with just a modicum of the usual entirely organic variation in colour; slipcases slightly worn and with the occasional dampstain or minor split. The Sussex Edition, the definitive edition of Kipling's works; number 221 of a limited edition of 525 numbered sets signed by the author on the limitation leaf. During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, with a view to having them published in Britain (as here) and in America (the Burwash edition). In both cases, he signed sheets for the editions before his death and the editions appeared posthumously. Although 525 sets of sheets for the Sussex edition were prepared, far fewer were bound and many were lost to enemy action as they lay in the publisher's warehouse. Laid in in the first volume is the publisher's eight-page prospectus, which gives a detailed description of this superb edition. This is the first set we have handled to come complete with the original slipcases.

Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1937. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung, which was renamed Volks-Illustrierte from 1936 to 1938. Many of these astonishing images are masterpieces of the art of caricature, and resulted in Heartfield having to flee for his life. This issue has the photomontage depicting a nazi soldier inspecting a battery of guns with the captions "At a dead end", and "Making guns from butter, that worked... but now I'd like to know: how do you change guns back into butter?".         Original Book Illustration Art.

      - This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet," "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears," "Whitetail: King of the Forest," "The Three Puppies," "The Small One," "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," "The Bluebird," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Enchantment of Santa Claus," "The Christ Child," "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens," "Polly Parrot," "Piccolino," "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko," written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book, from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages (front board graphic, frontispiece, pages 21 and 31). Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards, most with typeset text blocks, pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page, these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present, and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature, though many contain pencilled coloring instructions, etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form (two 22" X 15", two 15" X 18½"). Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century, and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years, from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s, etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George," which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner, an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own, Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join, but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Reklame, Werbung

        Their Eyes Were Watching God

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 286 pp. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Original orange cloth lettered in black. Corners bumped, fraying to base of spine, light soiling to cloth.Small ink inscription to front free endpaper. Without the scarce dust jacket. In a protective cover. First edition of Zora Neale Hurston's lyrical account of a poor black girl's transformation into an independent woman. Their Eyes Were Watching God received mixed reviews upon publication, and remained out of print for decades, until Alice Walker's 1975 essay "Looking for Zora" sparked a revival of interest in Hurston's work. Their Eyes Were Watching God is now the most widely reprinted novel by any Harlem Renaissance writer, occupying a unique place in discussions of modernist fiction, feminist writing and African-American folklore. A very good example of a fragile book, much nicer than usually found.
