        Sketches].

1937 - 2 sketches; 1 pencil and 1 conte pencil on paper. Mounted. Maxa Nordau was born to a middle class Parisian family. Her father, Max Nordau, was a physician and one of the founders of the International Zionist Organisation together with Theodor Herzl. She became an artist, studying oil painting, acrylic painting and sketching, before first exhibiting her work in 1924 in the official Salon in Strasbourg. During World War II, she left France and moved to the United States, where she displayed her work in several exhibitions in New York. Whilst there she took the opportunity to continue studying painting at the New York City College. When she returned to Paris in 1946, Nordau continued painting and began presenting her work in private galleries. Most of Nordau's paintings are portraits, particularly of women. Nordau travelled many times, and visited Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece, Morocco and other countries. The influence from her many journeys to the Middle East and to other Arabic countries is evident in the characters in her paintings. The Orient fascinated Nordau, and she paints the Arab women in her paintings in a very vivid and colourful manner. Nordau wasn't the only artist who had an interest in the Orient. This theme was very common amongst Jewish artists in the beginning of the 20th century, specifically amongst artists from Zionist families who had visited Palestine. Some of this group even left Europe and went to live and work in the growing Jewish state. When Nordau died in 1991, she left a large number of portraits and several illustrations. Although she was indeed French, Maxa Nordau is considered to be a part of what is called the 'School of Paris', a group of non-French artists, who worked in Paris before and during World War II.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1937 - 1937 Wisden Original Hardback

1937. Hi, This lot is an Original 1937 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the era of 1933 to 1937 were not the best of hardbacks as Wisden swapped materials in 1933, it resulted in poorer quality Wisdens but I am pleased to say that this 1937 is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year and the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front but still nice boards. The pastedowns are fabulous and very yellow, the hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. Some spotting to the page block else would be a 9. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

Original mimeographed manuscript screenplay signed by Cecil B. DeMille, Anthony Quinn, and others

1937. paperback. good. Paramount Films, 200 pages, July, 1937, bound in two staples, no cover (as issued), signed in ink on the cast page by director Cecil B. DeMille and actors Anthony Quinn, Frederic March, Franciscka Gaal, Akim Tamiroff, Beulah Bondi, and Jack Hubbard. Note: Cecil B. DeMille's swashbuckling film was a fictionalized account of General Andrew Jackson's recruitment of the pirate Jean Lafitte to fight for America during the War of 1812. In 1958 DeMille attempted a remake of the film starring Yul Brenner and Charlton Heston but became seriously ill on the set, delegating the task of "directing" to his son-in-law, Anthony Quinn, who had starred in the original. It was the only time in his career that Quinn ever received a motion picture credit for directing. It was also the very last film made by DeMille, who died four weeks after the film's release. Condition: usual toning (as should be expected) with dark bold signatures. Loosely placed inside a leather binder for safer handling.

When Crime Pays Off: A volume written after a continuous lesson learned in that always-existent institution, the School of Experience

Press of Heiter-Starke Printing Co, [Mobile, AL 1937 - Memoirs of a former member of the Pensacola, Florida, police force, and the crimes and criminals he has encountered, generously illustrated with photographs, including mugshots. Herrington joined the police force of the coastal city of Pensacola in 1907, and was shortly thereafter nominated as a mounted man, riding his beloved and trusted horse (and later motorcycle) on his rounds. Over the course of his career, Herrington "arrested hundreds of boys and girls," (p. 17) of whom the vast majority were under the age of 24. The pattern of juvenile delinquincy which the author witnessed during his thirty years as a police officer led to his publishing this collection in the hopes of addressing and educating a more youthful readership--among the anecdotes are "Trio of Young Bandits," "A Youthful Law Breaker," "The Reform School," "Wild Youth," and many others. The book begins with the murder of 19-year-old farmer's daughter, Lola Canady, presumably at the hands of Claude Neal, a black man. Neal was overtaken by a mob before he could be captured by the police, and was mutilated and lynched. Additional anecdotes include that of young men "hoboing" on freight trains with the resultant loss of legs; "A Terrifying Squirrel Hunt"; "Colored Killers"; "Two Death Cars"; and the electrocution of a "Negro Giant." Concludes with biblical advice, a promotion of the Boyscouts, and advice to children and parents on juvenile delinquency. Quite scarce: OCLC locates 2 copies as of April, 2016, none outside Florida. Octavo (23.5cm.); original red card wrappers, photo-illustrated belly-band; 124pp.; photographic illus. throughout. Wrapper extremities a bit rubbed and worn, long closed tear to belly-band touching text and image without loss, rear cover of belly band quite rubbed with loss to text and image with some minor loss of meaning. Still, Very Good overall in a Good or better example of an exceedingly ephemeral band. Perforated subscription card bound in rear. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Hornpipe (The Sailor)

Rexroth dated the painting 1937, indicated the orientation (top), and the palette: "red, yellow, blue, black, grey, white." The title, "Hornpipe" is written in the artist's hand on the verso of the painting. Rexroth also notes that another version exists in the collection of Sergei Chermayeff. For a 1973 exhibition of his works at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Rexroth retained the same dating and assigned the title "The Sailor." In the 1981 University of California at Santa Barbara Rexroth Retrospective, it was dated 1925-27. It is reproduced in letterpress on the cover of Excerpts from a Life (1981) and is dated "ca. 1929 Wax, silica, and pure decorator colors on Masonite, 15 5/8" wide x 19 7/8" high, ca. 1937, framed. Some tiny chips, and/or flecks, in the paint, perhaps the result of a bit of abrading, otherwise the painting is in near fine condition.

Murder à la Richelieu (Signed First Edition)

Doubleday, Doran, Garden City 1937 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by the Blackmon to author Peggy Gaddis (Erolie Pearl Gaddis Dern, 1895-1966) on the front endpaper, in the year of publication: "Affectionately, to the Best of Friends / Peggy Gaddis / From the author / Anita Blackmon (Mrs. Harry Pugh Smith) / August 29, 1937."Blackmon wrote extensively as Mrs. Harry Pugh Smith, with notable titles like "Handmade Rainbows" (1936), "Happy-Go-Lucky" (1938), and thousands of short stories, many of which were published in romance magazines in the 1930s. This is the first of two "Adelaide Adams" mysteries, the other being "There Is No Return" (1938). Her relationship to Peggy Gaddis is so far undocumented, but the two did publish titles under the Arcadia House and William Godwin publishing firms (as well as a number of shared magazine appearances), where it is likely the two crossed paths. This association of the two writers is unique, given the relative obscurity of their prewar publications.Very Good plus lacking the scarce dust jacket. Slight spine lean and light bumping to the spine ends, light foxing to the top page edges and endpapers, and light fading to the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Toscanini's Hooded Cape

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A black hooded cape with red lining, owned and worn by one of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and of the 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his photographic memory.  He was at various times the music director of La Scala Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937â??54), and this led to his becoming a household name (especially in the United States) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire.         Of Mice and Men.

New York: Covici-Friede, 1937. First edition, first issue, with the words "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula" printed as lines 20 and 21 on page 9, and bullet between the eights on page 88. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by John Steinbeck on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light rubbing to the extremities. The author began Of Mice and Men as a children's story. "Although the finished novelette does not seem appropriate for children--that intention was obviously abandoned--the simplicity of its style and the clarity and precision of its imagery may well have been prompted by this original purpose... " (Benson, 326). The result is "a sophisticated and artful rendering of the basic conflict between two worlds: between an idealized landscape and the real world with its pain and anguish" (Literary History of the American West). "A thriller, a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick" (The New York Times).

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
