Original artwork for the covers of Gee's Hunting Diary

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1937. 1 vols. 1 vols. The Derrydale Press printed Ernest R. Gee's "Gee's Hunting Diary" in 1937; the text, consisting of pages for data entries, was unillustrated, but both the upper and lower covers carried Henry Alken's design of a fox mask and other hunt trophies which had been used as the frontispiece to Fore's Hunting Diary, with "Fore's" changed to "Gee's". Offered here is the original artwork for this, consisting of a sepia photostat of the Fore's design, with minor retouching, and with the name "Fore's" obliterated and "Gee's" painted in its place with white and black ink, which has also been used to delineate the words "Hunting Diary". Although it does not show in the published form, the word "Fore's" can still be seen under the retouching. The area around the design has been whitened by airbrush, and the whole is surrounded by a thin line in black ink. The design measures 6-1/2" high x 12-3/8" wide; in the margins are pencilled notations concerning the size and colors to be used in the published version. The artwork is mounted on slightly worn backing board, and is in fine condition. A unique and fascinating Derrydale relic. Siegel 117; Frazier G-3-a. Provenance: Duncan Andrews

Autograph letter signed. Berlin, 7. XI. 1937.

1937. Large 4to. 2¾ pp. on bifolium. Comprehensive letter to the German artist Irmgard Hasenbach-Tavolato (née Seeling, 1899-1978), on financial worries: "Now, after my return to Berlin, I have learned of many things which also concern myself and which make it necessary for me to decide how I shall plan my further life so as to take care of myself and my family, for this I can no longer do by working as a painter [...] Is it possible that I exhibit in Italy, and may I sell my works, should someone wish to buy them? My savings would last for a little while, as I would be staying at a cheap fishing village. Here, my very existence consumes everything! and I can see when I will have reached the end [...]".

        Great Contemporaries

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptional British first edition, first printing in dust jacket, perhaps the finest example we have offered. Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. This copy is magnificent. The vivid orange dust jacket is unclipped, unusually clean, and highly complete, with only fractional loss to the flap and hinge corners. Spine presentation is excellent, with only barely discernible color shift between the faces and spine, a faint dark mark at the upper spine between title and author, and a tiny, barely perceptible moisture stain on the lower spine. The book beneath is nearly pristine. The blue cloth binding is flawlessly bright, tight, clean, and square with perfectly sharp corners, vivid gilt, and no appreciable wear. The contents are equally magnificent ? crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Faint differential toning to the endpapers corresponds to the dust jacket flaps. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. The character sketches herein offer remarkable portraits of both their subjects and the author. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals some of his own character and perspective. Churchill's portrait of T.E. Lawrence, published here just a few years before the Second World War, might well have been written about the author rather than by him: "The impression of the personality of Lawrence remains living and vivid upon the minds of his friends, and the sense of his loss is in no way dimmed among his countrymen. All feel the poorer that he has gone from us. In these days dangers and difficulties gather upon Britain and her Empire, and we are also conscious of a lack of outstanding figures with which to overcome them. Here was a man in whom there existed not only an immense capacity for service, but that touch of genius which everyone recognizes and no one can define." (Great Contemporaries, p.164) While some of the subjects of Churchill's sketches have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. This is as engaging a read today as it was in 1937. Bibliographic Reference: Cohen A105.1.a, Woods/ICS A43(a.1), Langworth p.178

Housed in a green morocco box with gilt title on spine. The box is partly faded to brown. From the library of Swedish publishers Gerard and Peggy Bonnier. An excellent, fresh copy in the jacket with slightly faded spine and short closed tear to head of spine. First edition, first printing. A superb presentation copy, "To Jean – who writes 'em for me.       ORIGINAL HAND COLOURED IMAGE ON CELLULOID. Image is 6.6 x 4.5 inches. Mounted glazed and framed to give a full size of 13.1 x 10.8 inches. A rare original hand-painted sheet of Celluloid from Disney's first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, showing Bashful. This cell was actually used in the filming process and is an original studio illustration. The image is mounted over a blue background with silver stars and with the character's name in black below the image. The black lettering is a little lost on the dark background but still readable. The colour image is in fine and bright condition, the colours still vibrant. The film was issued in 1937 but not many cells were released for commercial purposes over the following decades. This is one of a number that Disney released for sale during the 1970's. A label from the Disney offices states that this painting on celluloid was actually used in the filming and that only a very limited number have been placed on the market. The image is glazed using 99% UV protection Tru Vue Museum Glass. Fine condition.

IN PARENTHESIS seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu

Faber 1937 - First edition. Original buff cloth printed in blue on the spine, in grey printed dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the title to Eric Gill's brother, Evan, "David Jones for Evan Gill July 29th 1964". With the author's corrections to the Welsh on the dedication page. A near fine copy with Gill's bookplate to the front pastedown, and a contemporary cutting tipped in to the front blank announcing this book as the winner of the Hawthornden prize, in a very good dustwrapper indeed which shows a little wear to the head of the spine but is generally clean and crisp. Three black and white plates, two reproductions of designs for etchings and one map, all by the author. The author's first book and most celebrated work, which takes the form of an epic prose poem set in the first world war, based on the author's own experiences in the trenches. It was ten years in the making and was eventually helped to publication by T.S. Eliot, who hailed the book as "a work of genius". It won the 1938 Hawthornden prize. "This work of a poet-painter has its every word chiselled out of experience, and it is probably the World War I monument most likely to survive." - Stephen Spender (review in the NY Times). David Jones began his long association with the Gill family in 1922, when he became an early pupil of Eric Gill and was briefly engaged to Gill's daughter, Petra, shortly afterwards. In Parenthesis was itself printed by Gill's printing firm Hague and Gill. Jones will have known Evan through Eric and helped him with his bibliography of his brother's work.       1937. (Large) 4to. Altogether (1½+2+2=) 5½ pp. on 4 ff. With one autogr. envelope. To the American film director George Cukor (1899-1983) whom Beaton met in the 1930s, and most famously worked with him on the 1964 musical "My Fair Lady" for which Beaton won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction and Costume Design. I am hoping that Mrs. Higgins' set will be finished in a very few days. Is there anything else you would like me to do as I am quite anxious to get back to where I belong - particularly in view of the unhappiness of the last weeks. I would like to thank you for all the brunches & entertainment at your house & for the many kindnesses you showed me until things went wrong between us [...]". - From the Estate of Charles Williamson and Tucker Fleming. - Each letter on stationery with printed letterhead, including one by Warner Bros.
