Fine content Margaret Mitchell signed letter on the result of her recently published novel Gone With the Wind : "these days there are not enough hours in the twenty-four ... I have often wondered during this last strange year how any writer who produces a successful first novel ever finds time to write a second one!"

Atlanta, Georgia, October 14, 1937. 7" x 10.5". "Typed letter signed ""Peggy Mitchell Marsh"" in blue ink, 1 page, 7"" x 10.5"", October 14, 1937, on her personal letterhead, Atlanta, Georgia., addressed to ""Dear Doctor Boland."" Minor handling marks and creases, expected horizontal mailing folds, otherwise near fine condition.Mitchell writes, in part: ""I thank you and Mrs. Harper for your compliment in thinking that I could write a scenario of Dr. Long's achievements. But I am not the person to do it, as I know less than nothing about the technique of movie writing ... Realizing my complete ignorance, I refused to have anything to do with the scenario of my own novel ... To be quite honest, if it lay in my power to write scenarios I would not be able to do one about Doctor Long, because these days there are not enough hours in the twenty-four for me to attend to all the pressing business matters, foreign contracts, mail, editors et cetera which crowd in upon me. I have often wondered during this last strange year how any writer who produces a successful first novel ever finds time to write a second one!""Ironically, Mitchell never did publish a second book. She was struck by a speeding car as she crossed a street on her way to see the British film, ""A Canterbury Tale"" in August of 1949. She died five days later from her injuries without regaining consciousness. "

MARKED WOMAN (1937)

Warner Brothers 1937 - Vintage original 12 x 8" (30 x 20 cm.) midget/mini window card, USA. Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Lola Lane, Isabel Jewell, Mayo Methot, Jane Bryan, dir: Lloyd Bacon; Warner Brothers. Brilliant tale of hostesses told with as much candor as post-Production Code Hollywood was allowed. Working girl Bette Davis displays herself in one of her most glamorous gowns on this fine Warner Brothers poster of the period. The beaded gown (represented in red on this card) was made for her by Orry-Kelly. This is the film which marked Bette Davis' return to Warner Brothers after she walked out on the studio, fed up with the weak roles they were giving her. She got her wish in this role. Here she plays Mary Dwight, the cynical, world-weary hostess of a club run by gangsters. Living with the other hostesses of the club, her kid sister comes to visit and the truth of their means of living must be hidden. The woman are constantly being hauled into headquarters and questioned about their bosses. Davis' character is beaten by them to keep quiet. But then her kid sister is murdered, and she unravels to the district attorney (Humphrey Bogart). A classic crime melodrama. Wonderful rich colors. Very minor creases. Tow tears at the right side of the card have been reinforced with archival tape. One is in the lower area of her hair and the other just below her arm. Pin holes at each of the four corners have been filled in and reinforced with archival tape. Two small tears at the bottom have also been reinforced with archival tape. The top blank area of the card has been trimmed. NEAR FINE

LA GRANDE ILLUSION [GRAND ILLUSION] (1937)

RAC 1937 - Vintage original 15 x 19 ½" (37 x 49 cm.) photo, France. Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Julien Carette, Marcel Dalio, dir: Jean Renoir; RAC. This is the first foreign film to be nominated by the Academy for Best Picture (in 1938). It was awarded the Best Foreign Language Film by National Board of Review, USA, and the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for 1938. Renoir's brilliant study of class system played out amongst prisoners of war set during World War I, it is the prison escape film which all aspire to. Goebbels made sure that the Germans seized the film when they occupied France, referring to Renoir as "Cinematic Public Enemy Number 1". It was thought lost in a 1942 air raid, but a German archivist managed to smuggle out the original negative and took it back to Berlin. When the Russians entered Berlin, the film made its way to Moscow. Later, when Renoir was attempting to restore the movie, he had only muddy prints to work from. A film exchange between the Moscow and Toulouse archive included the original negative, which eventually was realized for a full restoration. Miraculously, we have this classic film to enjoy and here is an original 1937 country-of-origin theatrical advertising piece. In the image are Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay. Small chip at top right edge. There are pin holes and light creasing to the four corners. Item is a heavy cardboard. ABOUT FINE
