        Folklore of Capitalism

1937. First Edition . ARNOLD, Thurman. The Folklore of Capitalism. New Haven and London: Yale University Press and Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1937. Octavo, original red cloth gilt, original dust jacket. $1500.Scarce first edition of ArnoldÂ’s “exciting and stimulating” case for a revitalized American economic and political “creed,” the copy of New Deal economist Alan R. Sweezy. In 1930, Arnold joined the legal faculty at Yale, where he ""wrote two influential books, The Symbols of Government (1935) and The Folklore of Capitalism (1937), which catapulted him to the forefront of the national intellectual arena. In Symbols, Arnold argued that laws were not collections of immutable truths but rather mental representations of symbolic thinking. Arnold refashioned that argument and carried it a step further in Folklore, wherein he asserted that social progress was possible only through a pragmatic (rather than experimental) approach to government. Reassuring the nervous brokers on Wall Street that his was essentially a conservative diagnosis of America's economic and social ills were Arnold's assurances that there was no reason to root out capitalism; what civilization needed was fresh folklore for the common man and new vitalized myths."" Shortly after Folklore's publication Arnold was appointed assistant Attorney General. ""Many historians and commentators have referred to Arnold's tenure at Justice as the most effective of antitrust enforcement in U.S. history"" (ANB). ""Every reader will find it exciting and stimulatingÂ… No student of the theory of government can afford to ignore its novel approach to fundamental problems"" (LQR 54:603). NYU, 931. Ownership signature of economist Alan R. Sweezy, who in the 1930s helped establish Social Security and later worked at the Federal Reserve Board. Publisher's reply card laid in.Book fine with spine gilt bright. Original dust jacket with mild toning to spine and light edge-wear. A desirable and very nearly fine copy, with notable economic provenance.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1937 - 1937 Wisden Original Hardback

1937. Hi, This lot is an Original 1937 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the era of 1933 to 1937 were not the best of hardbacks as Wisden swapped materials in 1933, it resulted in poorer quality Wisdens but I am pleased to say that this 1937 is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year and the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front but still nice boards. The pastedowns are fabulous and very yellow, the hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. Some spotting to the page block else would be a 9. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

März 1832 in Weimar.

Case of the Palestine Arab

, 1937. 1937. First Edition . BECK, Frank H. The Case of the Palestine Arab. [London]: (W. & J. Rounge, 1937). Slim octavo, staple-bound as issued, original blue-gray paper wrappers respined and reinforced; pp. 28. $1500.First edition of this compelling work written a decade before Israeli statehood arguing that the British government had an obligation to be loyal to the Palestinian Arab community.Written right before the outbreak of World War II, this concise and forceful work enumerated the reasons why Britain should have placed its support behind the Arab nations and, specifically, the Palestinians. It attempted to show the economic and social disadvantages of the Palestinian population in a region that was being subjected to heavy Jewish immigration (particularly following the new racial policies in Europe). Beck objected to the justifications underlying Zionism and asserted that Britain had showed favoritism and excessive leniency toward the Jewish community. He argued that Palestinian Jews and Jewish immigrants to Palestine were overtaking the Palestinian population economically and turning the Palestinians into

        Metamorphosis

1937. First Edition . KAFKA, Franz. The Metamorphosis. (London): Parton, 1937. Slim octavo, original half blue cloth, blue paper label; pp. 74. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $5000.First edition in English of one of KafkaÂ’s most important works.""While critics have interpreted this chilling story variously as a description of despair in a meaningless world, as a reaction to institutional authoritarianism, and as an expression of conflict between the author and his father, its power seems to rest in its resistance to explanation. W.H. Auden has said of it, 'Had one to name the author who comes nearest to bearing the same kind of relation to our age as Dante, Shakespeare and Goethe bore to theirs, Kafka would be the first one would think of"" (New York Public Library's Books of the Century, 13). ""Kafka published few works in his lifetime and left a testamentary direction that his unpublished writings should be destroyed, which was disregarded by his friend and executor Max Brod,"" who published The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926) after Kafka's death in 1924 (Garland & Garland, 466). Kafka himself published The Metamorphosis in German in 1915. Translated by A.L. Lloyd. Without scarce original glassine. Owner signature.A fine copy.

Liquid Gems, A Book of Drinks for the Fastidious Drinker [Cocktail Recipes]

John R. Iverson [San Francisco] (1937) - First Edition. Original soft suede printed 'wrappers', 121 pages, 7 by 5 inches. Attractive post-prohibition cocktail guide, including recipes for such drinks as: American Flag, Waldorf Fizz, Paree Cocktail, Blinker, etc. An article in a contemporary Santa Cruz newspaper muses about this title thusly: "Cocktail hour visitors to the restful St. George hotel tap room are talking about John R. Iverson, recently 'discovered' by them as not only a modest, sincere and friendly bartender, but as an author of merit and one of the country's outstanding authorities on drinks and how to make them. Hiddin for almost the entire two months he has been at the St. George, his prominence under a natural screen of self-effacement, the young but serious-browed Mr. Iverson stood today revealed as the author of a deluxe 'cocktail manual, "Liquid Gems." A highly different but thoroughly authoritative book of drink recipes accepted as "tops" in its line by leaders of the beverage industry. Mr. Iverson, formerly of the world-famed Savoy hotel, London, compiled and published his novel work while at the California Golf Club in San Francisco. Beautifully printed and bound". Scarce, WorldCat locates two copies, both at the University of California. Almost Near Fine, old gift inscription at front pastedown. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
