This printing is in the "new 2/6 uniform edition of the detective novels of Agatha Christie". The latest title listed on the rear panel is Dumb Witness first published in 1937. This specific edition is not commonly found. The collection includes one of her most famous stories "The Witness for the Prosecution", the basis of the 1957 film and a two-part BBC drama for Christmas 2016.

Leaf and Bemelmans' project was inspired by Dutch-American historian and children's book author Hendrik van Loon's dachshund. Bemelmans' large, beautiful original drawing, executed in black ink and brown crayon—signed by the artist and titled, in his hand, ""Sketch for Noodle""—depicts the dog stretched out atop a ruler.       (Fratelli Bocca), (Milano) 1937 - 108 ff. & colophon pages; An oblong quarto volume bound in full brown morocco leather, elaborate decorative tooling around the edges of the covers and all over flat spine, lightly and irregularly gilt, in imitation of the mid-17th century original, edges of the leaves gilt and gauffered. This is a rare and special facsimile -- one of five copies printed in 1937 -- of one of the two known early musical scores of one of the most important operas -- Claudio Monteverdi's masterpiece: L'incoronazione di Poppea. There are still unknown features about this landmark opera's history and Monteverdi's intentions for its performance. "L'incoronazione di Poppea" was first performed at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, as part of the 1642–43 carnival season; and while we know the opening date of the carnival, the date of the first performance of "Poppea" is not known. Remarkably, there is documentary proof of an early revival of L'incoronazione, in Naples in 1651. The survival of any work from this period years after a first production (and after Monteverdi's death in 1643) is most unusual. This manuscript score was rediscovered in Venice in 1888, and performances throughout Europe slowly multiplied from that point forward. This manuscript score entered the Biblioteca Nazionale di S. Marco in Venezia (shelf mark Cl.4 - N.439) -- as part of the large and important collection of books and manuscripts donated as the legacy of Girolamo Contarini (1770-1843). Most likely, it had been one of the 120 musical codices which once belonged to the Attorney Marco Contarini (1632 - 1689), a passionate lover of music. The 1888 "rediscovery" refers to the date of publication of scholar Taddeo Wiel's 'I codici musicali contariniani del secolo XVII della R. Biblioteca di San Marco in Venezia illustrati da dr Taddeo Wiel." [Venezia: Fratelli Visentini, 1888.] To say that this facsimile is made with care is a significant understatement. There are 108 leaves, with the score on staves appearing on both versos and rectos of the leaves. The first - "Prologo" is trimmed at the bottom (like the original); the verso of the leave marked "108" is blank. There is only one printed page in this volume -- the colophon at the end, which states that the production was finished on 20 December 1937 by the Casa Editrice Fratelli Bocca, Milano. The edition consisted of 300 numbered copies, with the specific note that copies numbered 1-5 were specially bound - ( "La tiratura e` di soli 300 esemplari numerati da 1 a 300. Gli esemplari da 1 a 5 sono presentati in elegantissime artistiche legature"). Indeed, this copy is press-numbered "5." (The remaining 295 copies were issued by Fratelli Bocca in marbled boards and dated 1938, with a 16 pp. "Introduzione di Giacomo Benvenuti.") This specially bound copy, one of only five, remains as it was issued -- with neither title page nor the introductory text. See OCLC Number: 638299219 [the regular 295 copies are represented by OCLC Number: 4231806]. Yale's Beinecke Music Library has another of the special copies, [Esemplare N. 2. Binding stamped: Ernest Newman. From the Albi Rosenthal Collection of Monteverdi and the birth of opera. Yale also has copy n. 21 of the "regular" issue]. The "other" manuscript score, usually called the "Naples" manuscript, was discovered in 1930, and is preserved in the Conservatorio di Musica S. Pietro a Majella -- MS Rari 6.4.1). The long-lived composer Monteverdi wrote one of the earliest operas, 'L'Orfeo' -- but most modern critics would agree that L'incoronazione di Poppea was the culmination of Monteverdi's achievement, a benchmark in the transition between Renaissance style in music and the Baroque. "Poppea" is based on historic figures, rather than mythological characters. It combines scenes of tragedy, comedy and romance; and it concentrates on its main characters, with a less prominent role for the chorus -- all firsts for opera. The book covers the first two of the four Iranian expeditions Stein undertook from 1931 to 1936, and is a sequel to his earlier book On Alexander’s Track to the Indus (1929), the main focus of which was to study the contacts between the Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations and to trace the western terminals of the Silk Road. In these expeditions, Stein and his team succeeded in uncovering hundreds of valuable artifacts and manuscripts from different sites along the route, which contributed hugely to Indian and Iranian studies, and to the historical geography of the region. Brimming with criticism directed at American capitalism and the bureaucracy of the Roosevelt administration, the novel explores social circumstances and situations in Key West, "that paradise of the 'haves' and purgatory of the 'have nots."       Random House. New York 1937 - First printing. 269pp. Signed by Auden and MacNeice in pencil to the title page and very scarce thus. The first North American edition of Auden and MacNeice's 'unconventional' pre-war travelogue. The narrative's jocular tone is a little forced at times, but the book closes quietly with MacNeice's Epilogue: "Our prerogatives as men / Will be cancelled who knows when / Still I drink your health before / The gun-butt raps upon the door." Auden then travelled to Spain and the civil war, whilst MacNeice followed in the footsteps of Dr Johnson and went to the Hebrides with Nancy Coldstream. This copy in very good condition; text-block tight and sound with some age-toning to the edges of the leaves. "An enquiry into the origins of Islamic art presented in the form of one of the most entertaining travel books of modern times" (ODNB). In his introduction to the 1981 re-issue, Bruce Chatwin confessed to considering it "a work of genius" which he had elevated to the status of "sacred text". He stressed that it remained an important book, as in between the "bravura passages" Byron expounds a serious thesis about the significance of Afghan influence on Persian civilization.       - A rare original photograph of the notoriously awful soprano, taken at a party at her Manhattan apartment in the Seymour Hotel in 1937. Photographed by Margaret Bourke-White for Life magazine, for a projected story, "Life Goes to a Party," which was never published. In front of the piano and her own portrait, Jenkins is shown delightedly offering her hand to a gallant younger man. Some staining to the right edge and corner creases; overall in very good condition. 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.5 cm).The American photographer and documentary photographer Margaret Bourke-White is best known as the first foreign photographer permitted to take pictures of Soviet industry, the firsthand American female war photojournalist, and the first female photographer for Henry Luce's Life magazine, where her photograph appeared on the first cover.Florence Foster Jenkins, an American girl born in 1868 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to a well-to-do family, has become a legend as "the world's worst opera singer."  She made some vanity 78 rpm records for the Mel-o-tone label during World War Two, and in October 1944 hired Carnegie Hall for a recital.  The bad reviews that resulted from that recital were said to break her heart and she died a few weeks later at age 76, but the recordings have kept her name and her art alive.  In recent years there have been several plays about her, and this year there are three full-length movies.  The first, a French comedy-drama titled "Marguerite," was released earlier this year.  A second, produced in Britain and starring Meryl Streep as Jenkins, is being released in the USA in August, 2016, and later this year a German docu-drama starring soprano Joyce di Donato as Jenkins will premiere.  Two different full-length biographies of Jenkins have appeared within the last weeks in England, one by Darryl Bullock and the other by Jasper Rees. However, autograph material and other historical memorabilia of Jenkins is of the utmost rarity.

",,,Todt hatte Anfang Juli 1937 von Willy Hof, einem der frühen Verfechter und ausgezeichneten Kenner der Autobahnidee in Deutschland, ein Manuskript von Kurt Kaftan mit dem Titel "Autostraßen im Europa" erhalten. Dieses Manuskript, auf Kaftans Schrift "Europa braucht Autobahnen" basierend und ins Italienische übersetzt, hatte Hof auch an Puricelli in Mailand gesandt. Sowohl Todt als auch Puricelli, sind empört über Kaftans Schrift, beiden gingen augenscheinlich die Positionen in der Schrift Kaftans zu weit. Der Generalinspektor und der Senator reklamieren in dem nun folgenden Schriftverkehr, ihren und den Anspruch ihrer "Führer" auf die geistige Urheberschaft an den Autobahnen. In verschiedenen seiner Schriften hat Kaftan immer wieder die italienische Vorreiterrolle und die der HAFRABA in Deutschland betont, was Todt natürlich ein Dorn im Auge war. Schon zu dieser Zeit maßregelte Todt, verbunden mit einer offenen Drohung, den Schriftsteller Kaftan: "Die Reichsautobahnen, wie wir sie jetzt bauen, haben nicht als von der 'HAFRABA' vorbereitet zu gelten, sondern einzig und allein als 'Die Straßen Adolf Hitlers'" (Vgl.BArch, R 4602/729, Bl. 79, Aufzeichnungen von Theodor Krebs). Andererseits galt Kaftan auch als Kritiker von Puricellis Planungen und bezeichnete dessen im Jahre 1935 veröffentlichte Fassung eines internationalen Autobahnnetzes auf Grund des nur peripher berücksichtigten Nordeuropa als unausgegoren. Kaftan selbst wurde daraufhin offenbar von Todt und Puricelli unter Druck gesetzt, die aus ihrer Sicht "großen" Fehler in seinem Manuskript zu beseitigen. Anderenfalls wollte Puricelli mit einer "Publikation den wahren Hergang" schildern. "Ich nehme an, dass Herrn Dr. Todt ich selbst einen Gefallen tun werde, wenn ich damit zur Kenntnis bringe, was in der Autostraßenplanung und im Autobahnenbau alles geleistet wurde, bevor er die Ehre und das Glück hatte, vom Führer an die erste Stelle gesetzt zu werden." Kaftan bezeichnete Hof einmal (in: Die Autobahn 7/1933) als "den Frontkämpfer". In Ober-Ramstadt, wo Hof 1956 starb, wird er als der "Vater der Autobahnen" bezeichnet.

Having joined the Royal Air Force during the Second World War with his younger brother Tony, Michael was tragically killed when his Mosquito malfunctioned and crashed near Chichester in 1944. The book itself tells the story of the genesis of the tank, constituting the first word on the matter from the man who directed the initial project. Gestating at first as an armoured car for the Royal Naval Air Service, the tank was first referred to as a caterpillar landship.

Old dampstain causing slight discolouration at head of images, "May" slightly frayed at bottom edge, otherwise in very good condition. Coloured lithograph cover (reproducing the design for March) and 12 similar images by "Sim"; with descriptive letterpress for each month in Spanish, French and English. Rare Republican calendar from the Spanish Civil War, the images striking and the colour fresh and bright: Copac cites only the copy at the V&A among British and Irish institutional libraries; no location recorded by OCLC or KVK, not in the extensive Southworth Spanish Civil War Collection at UC San Diego or the Biblioteca del Pavelló de la República of the University of Barcelona. The calendar's rarity may be accounted for by the fact that each month is separated by a perforation from its accompanying illustration, so that the lithograph could be detached and kept. It was issued by POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista), the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification, forever connected with the name of George Orwell and Homage to Catalonia. The Southworth Collection has a poster - for Setmana de l'infant (Week of the Child), issued in 1936 - designed by "Sim", a pseudonym "used by the painter [José Luis] Rey Vila [1900-1983]. He received his artistic training in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona. An unsigned text in an album of images which he executed during the war (12 Escenas de Guerra) states that during his military service in the Spanish territories in northern Africa, which coincided with the defeat of the Spanish troops at Annual (July 21, 1921), Sim 'became aware of the moral turpitude of politicians and of the military, and he became a firm defender of the people. For that reason, his drawings have an improvisational character, agile and nervous, emotional and revolutionary.' In the first months of the war, Sim arrived at the headquarters of the artists' trade-union in Catalonia, the Sindicat de Dibuixants Professionals, 'with an album of drawings under his arm' which he offered for publication (this album is probably Estampas de la Revolución Espa§ola, 19 de Julio de 1936). Sim was refused, partly because drawings were not seen as adequate means of propaganda, and also because he lacked personal references, an important liability in a climate of intense suspicion caused by the war. This poster [for Week of the Child] is evidence that Sim found other means to collaborate with the war effort, working for the Generalitat (publisher of this poster), and also for anarchist organizations (the aforementioned album Estampas de la Revolución Española was published by the Spanish Anarchist Party, FAI, and by the CNT)". "Sim" was the focus of a recent exhibition and conference at the Biblioteca del Pavelló de la República of the University of Barcelona, who possess a copy of a 1938 calendar with his designs. A conspicuous survival and a memorable record of the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War.

Original black sand-grained cloth cord-backed binder, red silk tie, large gilt block to the front board showing Shanghai under assault by Japanese 'planes, ships and tanks, large images of bombs and shells superimposed on the silhouette of the skyline of the Bund; the 12-page index, stitched in printed grey wraps, lettered in black on the front panel. The first with 201 tipped-in silver gelatin photos, all numbered in white ink above the image keyed to the printed index, frontispiece photo (88 x 127 mm) of dead and burned soldiers is unlisted in the index, nearly all of the rest are 63 x 83 mm, a number of night scenes colour-tinted in vivid red, two panoramic photos, one in red, sized 83 x 203 mm. Album slightly rubbed, and with minor edge-wear, remains very good; the front panel of the wraps to the index has a soft crease, minor toning to fore-edges, and the ownership inscription of "J. D. Willmouth, Shanghai, China, August, 1937 - January, 1938" to the front panel. First edition of the complete set of 200 silver gelatin photographs issued by the Ah Fong Photography Studio, recording the brutal siege and conquest of Shanghai by the Japanese at the opening of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan's failure to defeat China in this war became the key dynamic for what happened in Asia during the Second World War. In his award-winning study of the conflict - China's War with Japan, 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival (2013) - Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the Institute for Chinese Studies at Oxford, refers to the Battle of Shanghai as turning "China's most open, lively and cosmopolitan centre... into a charnel house". Extremely uncommon, OCLC records a copy with just 100 prints at Cornell, and another similar in the National Library of Australia, IWM have listings for three copies within individual archives, but none with an image count, the presence of the folded index mounted inside the front boards, rather than the loosely inserted stitched index as here, suggesting that they are copies of the shorter version. BL has a copy of the 200-item index in the India Office Collection. Following the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) in which Japan had conquered and absorbed Manchuria into their empire, hostilities had sporadically flared and intensified in the region. After a number of provocations in the summer of 1937 Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces joined with the warlords of Hunan and Szechwan provinces to fight the Japanese. Chiang believed that attacks on Japanese naval installations and troops in and around Shanghai would force the hand of foreign powers to ally with China in the fight against Japan to protect their investments in southern China. The Nationalist Chinese managed to hold out for three months against ferocious bombardment by the Japanese from 'planes based in Taiwan, and ships on the Huangpu River. These attacks inflicted terrible casualties on the Chinese, eventually forcing them to retreat from Shanghai to Nanking under constant attack from Japanese reinforcements. The sometimes shockingly brutal images gathered here include a panorama of the Bund with the USS Augusta and HMS Cumberland in port evacuating foreign nationals, the burning of Chapei in October, 1937, Japanese Marines in action, casualties from the Pantheon Theatre, Chinese troops in combat with tanks, cremated bodies, corpses floating downstream, Chinese snipers, bombing on Paoshan Road, Markham Road, the burning of Chapei, Pootung, and Kiangwan, Japanese heavy bombers, Red Cross transporting the wounded, American Marines, the Japanese "Victory March" through the International Concession with the photos taken outside of the British Consulate. The Ah Fong studio was established in Hong Kong in 1859 by Lai Afong, a commercial photographer who was trained by early western photographers in China. "The most significant Chinese photographer of the nineteenth century" (Terry Bennett in Hannay, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography (p.815) Afong subsequently opened studios in Canton, Shanghai, and Wei-Hai-Wei, "gaining his success mainly in western community residing or travelling in China" (Shi Chen, Early Chinese Photographers from 1840 to 1870, University of Florida, 2009, p.7). It seems that the studio maintained its reputation when his son took over around the turn of the century. An excellent copy of this extremely elusive and historically important publication.
