Berlin, Weltkunst Verlag, 1927 - 1937. - Pag. OBrosch. The High Commissioners in London for the Dominions and for India and Ambassadors to the Court of St James. Portraits specially taken for Publication in the 'Daily Telegraph' by J. Dixon-Scott. Coronation Year 1937

'Daily Telegraph', London 1937 - Large oblong octavo (205 x 300 mm), [iv] (title leaf, index of High Commissioners, both versos blank), [ii] (index of Ambassadors) pages plus 25 mounted gelatin silver portrait photographs (each approximately 150 x 200 mm). A photograph album in full light blue calf, lettered in gilt on the front cover; leather a little marked, sunned and scuffed, with the front top edge a little abraded in three spots; uncut deckle edges a little dusty or sunned, with a few trifling signs of handling; in very good condition, with the photographs in fine condition (albeit with uniform silvering-out around the thin unprinted borders). The High Commissioners are: The Honourable Vincent Massey, Canada; The Right Honourable Stanley Bruce, Commonwealth of Australia; W.J. Jordan, New Zealand; C.T. Te Water, Union of South Africa; J.W. Dulanty, Irish Free State; and Sir Firoz Khan Noon, India. The Ambassadors are: Dr Paul Regis de Oliveira, Brazil; Baron de Cartier de Marchienne, Belgium; Dr Manuel E. Malbran, Argentine; Count Grandi, Italy; Ivan Maisky, Soviet Union; Robert Worth Bingham, USA; Charles Corbin, France; Bey Fethi Okyar, Turkey; Count Edouard Raczynski, Poland; Quo Tai-Chi, China; Augustin Edwards, Chile; Shigeru Yoshida, Japan; Pablo de Azcarate, Spain; [Joachim] von Ribbentrop, Germany; Dr Armindo Monteiro, Portugal; and Dr Hafez Afifi Pasha, Egypt. 'In the late 1920s, the photographer John Dixon-Scott became concerned at the way the rural and urban environment of Britain was changing. He drove around the country with his camera intending to preserve through his pictures what he saw as a vanishing landscape, in a photographic project that took him years. The result was a collection of over 14,000 images which in 1946 he sold to the Central Office of Information, the British government's communications agency. Eventually these prints passed into the collections of The National Archives' (NA website). This commissioned album of portraits is unrepresentative of his life's work, which is surely our loss. The title of the album and the subjects in this series, worthy men all, do not, at first glance, suggest that a second glance is called for. But John Dixon-Scott has eschewed the time-honoured formality of the traditional head-and-shoulders treatment, and placed his men of mark in their offices or studies. The results are sublime - they are as much portraits of national character as of individuals. We'll save ourselves the trouble of writing the next thousand words by directing you to look at just two of the results, that of The Right Honourable Stanley Bruce of the Commonwealth of Australia (and her former Prime Minister), and Count Grandi of Italy.         Vive la Revolution Chinoise! - Chinese Communist Revolution Poster

1937. (MAO ZEDONG). Vive la Revolution Chinoise! [French poster supporting the Chinese Communist Revolution]. Paris: Imprimerie S.I.M., [1937]. Poster (30-1/2 by 22 inches), printed on recto in red and black. $1500.Large French poster advertising a 1937 meeting to support the Chinese Communist Revolution, featuring the iconic image of Mao during the Long March of 1934-35.The poster, advertising a meeting for Tuesday, September 21 at 8:30, 1937, includes Mao's famous quote: ""The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history."" The Communist Party and other left-leaning parties rose to power in France in the 1930s, culminating with the Popular Front winning the general election in May 1936—Léon Blum became the first Socialist Prime Minister of France as well as the first Jew to hold that office. The international focus of Communism is clear from this poster, which calls for a meeting in Paris to discuss and support the Chinese Communist Revolution, which had recently experienced a major setback: the Long March, which was only later heralded as a victory and a crucial formative period for Mao and his fellow communists. More pressing concerns would soon overtake both the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang (the Chinese Nationalists), when the Japanese launched their full-scale invasion of China, leading to the capture of the Chinese capital Nanking by the end of 1937, and forcing the CCP and the Kuomintang into an uneasy alliance to resist the invaders. By the time of this poster's printing, the incredible events of the Long March would have highlighted Mao's leadership and his fellow marchers' legendary perseverance, while news of the recent Japanese aggression would certainly have been reaching France as well. Text in French. Faint fold lines and creases, pinholes in corners. An extremely good copy, scarce.

Large quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4"). 252, [2]pp. Original quarter brown cloth over photo-illustrated paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine, and red and black lettering to front cover. Profusely illustrated with numerous annotated sepia-toned photogravures glorifying life in the Third Reich, McClatchie's "Sieh: Das Herz Europas" remains to this day the most powerful pro-Nazi photobook ever published by an American citizen. Stanley McClatchie was a native of Los Angeles who had lived in the Weimar Republic during the depression in the early 1930's. When he returned to Germany for the 1936 Olympics, he was so impressed with the 'positive changes' under Hitler's regime that he tried to convince other countries such as Spain and France to adopt a similar political system. The photographs featured in this book intend to depict a hard-working German people united behind their fuehrer, and pleased with the industrial, social and technical changes that had taken place since the Nazis gained power.Binding slightly foxed along edges, and rubbing to corners. Minor foxing to endpapers. Title page missing. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition.

"Otte Wallish (1903–1977) was an emigre to Israel who established himself as a graphic designer and contributed to the symbolic self-representation of the Jewish state . In 1936, Wallish set up a design studio in a building in Nahalat Binyamin, Tel Aviv, that had been chosen as a national landmark. His design studio doubled as a kind of front for SHA'I, the Haganah's secret service . Wallish was responsible for the calligraphy and design of the scroll for Israel's Declaration of Independence. In addition, Walisch handled the preparation of the exhibit hall in which the State's Independence was announced. In 1948, too, Wallish took the lead in designing Israel's first postage stamps. He chose a design based on ancient coins, found in archaeological research on the First Jewish-Roman War and the Bar Kochba Revolt . Wallish continued to be a leading designer of Israeli stamps . Israel's first coins were designed from a proposal submitted by Israel Numismatic Society proposal, put together with Leo Kadman, Hanan Pavel, and Wallish. He also designed paper currency for Israel . Over the years, Wallish also designed posters. For instance, one poster shows the Jewish immigration by ship and another promotes the ZIM shipping line. His posters have been featured in exhibition and the 1997 ‘Selling Zionism’ exhibit at the Israel Museum. In 2006, a Wallish poster was shown at ‘The New Hebrews: 100 Years of Art in Israel’ exhibit, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin . His posters are displayed as well at the Central Zionist Archives and the Tel Aviv Museum" (Wikipedia 2015) . Subjects: Keren Hayesod; Jewish National Fund; United Israel Appeal. After seeing a Cuban get his head blown off with a Luger, Morgan reacts with typical Hemingway understatement: "I took a quick one out of the first bottle I saw open and I couldn't tell you yet what it was. The whole thing made me feel pretty bad." Still feeling bad, Harry heads out in his boat on a charter fishing expedition for which he is later stiffed by the client. With not even enough money to fill his gas tanks, he is forced to agree to smuggle some illegal Chinese for the mysterious Mr. Sing. From there it's just a small step to carrying liquor--a disastrous run that ends when Harry loses an arm and his boat. Once Harry gets mixed up in the brewing Cuban revolution, however, even those losses seem small compared to what's at stake now: his very life. -Amazon.
