Petrus Abraham Samuel VAN LIMBURG BROUWER (1829 - 1873), Author: Julia ISBRÜCKER - J. R. G. ISBRÜCKER – J. ZIERMANS; Translators.
8°, 215 pp., original hard cover blue and tan linen binding with gilt embossed title on the cover and spine (Very Good, corners hardly noticeable bumped). Den Haag: Internacia Cseh-Instituto de Esperanto 1936. An Esperanto translation of a Dutch novel 1872 Akbar. Oosterse roman in a stunning art deco binding, was translated by Julia Isbrücker and J. R. G. Isbrücker in Cseh method in 1936. - This is a second end improved translation to Esperanto of a Dutch novel by Petrus Abraham Samuel van Limburg Brouwer (1829 - 1873), about Abu'l-Fath Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar (1542– 1605), popularly known as Akbar or Akbar the Great, the third Mughal emperor, who reigned from 1556 to 1605. The first edition of the novel in Dutch was published in 1872 and the first Esperanto translation was made in 1923 by Jan Ziermans. This is a second, improved and shorter translation from 1936. The translation was made by Julia Isbrücker and J. R. G. Isbrücker, who in 1930 founded the International Cseh Institute of Esperanto together with Andreo Cseh (1895-1979). The institure moved to the Hague in 1933 and is today known as Andreo Cseh House. The Isbrückers and Cseh were one of the founders of 1930 learning and translation techniques of Esperanto. In 1942, during WWII, when Esperanto was forbidden by the Nazis, they founded an underground group Universala Ligo. We could only trace seven examples in libraries worldwide. RIDING, Laura, and GRAVES, Robert (edit and contribute)
The Seizin Press, Deya, Majorca, and Constable, London., 1936-1937. First editions. Three volumes, plus The World and Ourselves (Chatto & Windus, London, 1938) which was the informal fourth and final volume. Laura Riding contributes extensively throughout, with solo articles and in collaboration with Robert Graves and others. Graves contributes in his own right more than once to each volume. Madeleine Vara, Len Lye, John Aldridge, Harry Kemp, Kenneth Allott, Katherine Burdekin, James Reeves, Honor Wyatt, Ward Hutchinson and others also contribute. Essays, fiction, verse, the general ethos of the project being one of collaboration. The design on the front covers is from an engraving by John Aldridge. The World and Ourselves (octavo, pp xii, 529) comprises mainly responses from 65 people prominent in their fields to a letter from Riding concerning the ''world situation''. These include Christina Stead, Naomi Mitchison, Edward Marsh, Lord Gorell, Norman Cameron, as well as almost all those listed above as contributors to Epilogue. On the front free endpaper is the ownership signature of Mary Somerville who after the war became Controller of Talks at the BBC. Some rubbing to covers and bumps to edges of covers. Signs of damp to tail of second volume. The fourth volume is spotted on the edges and endpapers, very good in very good, slightly nicked dustwrapper rubbed at the edges. A very good set. Becoming elusive.

FULLER, J. F. C.
London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1936 - Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine. With the dust jacket. With 2 laid-in autograph letters signed, both single sheets (177 x 137 mm), respectively blind-stamped "'The Manor', hotel and country club, Duddleswell, Sussex", and "West Poundgate Manor, Crowborough, Sussex". Crease to spine, tips lightly bumped and rubbed, mild spotting to edges, free endpapers browned. A very good copy in the chipped and torn dust jacket with extensive tape-repair verso. The letters both faintly creased where once folded, and a little dog-eared at corners, a few trivial marks. Folding plate containing 2 sketch maps. First edition, first impression of Fuller's important study of the Italo-Abyssinian War. With two autograph letters signed from the author to a Mr Fontaine, apparently an academic or journalist. In the first, dated 8 February 1951, Fuller thanks him for an article he has sent and discusses the balance of power between the trade unions and the British government: "Power is now with the Trade Unions or rather in the hands of those they represent, & responsibility remains with the Government. A government without power leads directly towards dictatorship, power being regained with the pistol". Fuller was probably responding to the Freedom of Association and Right to Organise conventions, which in Britain were ratified in 1949 and 1950 respectively. In the second letter, dated 22 April 1952, Fuller thanks Fontaine for a leaflet and declines an invitation to write a piece on food ("I am not an expert on it, and at the time I have so much … [Click Below for Full Description]

There are no captions, but two easily identifiable ships appear in some images - HMS Furious and HMS Gallant (a destroyer commissioned in 1936). Furious was a Courageous-class battlecruiser, laid down in June 1915 but modified to become an aircraft carrier while under construction; she was reconstructed with a full-length flight deck in the early 1920s. There is an excellent view from the air of Furious among these photographs.

Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Canada, USA, 1936. Two albums of photograph taken and compiled by an English couple's adventure, first making a voyage to exotic South Pacific Islands, then crossing North America by rail from the west coast to the eastern seaboard as far as New York City and Quebec. Together containing 274 gelatin silver print photographs, both snapshot images and professional works, mounted onto cardstock leaves, most with either manuscript captions or embedded typescript captions. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 6 cm, and the largest 11 x 6,5 cm. Two oblong 8vo. string-tied brown paper board albums measuring approximately 29 x 21 cm, containing 203 photographs, and 71 photographs, respectively. Some creasing to boards, mild fading to a scant few images, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a fascinating reminiscence of bygone days. This two-part journey, which was designed for the travellers to witness primitive tropical island life and also to traverse and explore a mountainous continent, provides us today with the real sense of how very much has changed in 80 years, for tribal communities and urban centers alike. Lovely photographs are taken on a Pacific Islands voyage, with uncommon views from the especially historic Fijian town of Levuka and the capital city Suva, including photographs of the indigenous people. One of these is purported to be of a group of cannibals. A traditional Fijian dwelling called 'bure' is shown, made of thatched wood and straw. Iconic views in and around Honolulu in Hawaii include the Royal Hawaiian H … [Click Below for Full Description]

Miller, Henry
The Obelisk Press, Paris. One of 1,000 copies. Octavo (19.25cm); illustrated wrappers with French flaps; 267,[5]pp. Inscribed by the author two months following publication on the first blank page: "To Huntington Cairns / with all best wishes - in rememberance of pleasant days in Paris. Henry Miller / 8/36." Light wear and toning to spine and extremities, along with some mild dust-soil to wrappers; clean internally; Very Good+. Superb copy of Miller's second novel inscribed to Huntington Cairns, a young Baltimore lawyer who in September 1934 was appointed official U.S. Censor by the Secretary of the Treasury. It was Cairns who declared Miller's 1934 novel Tropic of Cancer (and subsequently, Black Spring, Tropic of Capricorn, and The Rosy Crucifixion) obscene based on the laws of the day, despite his admiration for Miller as an author and artist. His decision led to a 25-year correspondence and friendship between censor and author. In May 1936, Cairns received a letter from Miller, who had been corresponding with H.L. Mencken, to whom he had sent a copy of Tropic of Cancer that had eluded the U.S. Customs Bureau. Mencken told Miller of Cairns's "interest and bewilderment" in the book. Miller assured Cairns, "I appreciate your position and the attitude you have taken." He offered to send Cairns a copy of his second book, Black Spring, which Obelisk had recently issued. Cairns, no doubt concerned lest Miller try to mail another obscene book directly to him, the censor, wrote back to tell Miller that he would be in Paris in August and would pick up a copy of the book while ther … [Click Below for Full Description]
