Sholok, Edvard and A. N. Komarov, illustrator
Harbin: Izdanie Izd-va "Mirok", 1936. Quarto (26.3 × 17.5). Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. Five full-page drawings by A. N. Komarov and numerous vignettes. Two tiny tears to front wrapper; light soil to rear wrapper; else a very good copy of a fragile title. Rare illustrated children's book, published for children of the Russian émigré colony in the Far East (Harbin, Shanghai, and Tiantsin). Due to the development of the Russian Far-Eastern Railroad, Russia had a strong presence in Northern China in the early twentieth-century, especially in Manchuria. After the October Revolution, both Harbin and Shanghai became home to thousands more who fled the Bolshevik regime and who quickly established a series of Russian-language publishing ventures throughout the region. Little is known about the author; a first edition of this work appeared in Moscow in 1923, and he appears to have authored a Yiddish book published in Minsk in 1933. It is possible that he fled the Soviet Union via the Far East in the mid-1930s, or that the book was simply reprinted based on the Moscow edition. Not in KVK, OCLC. One of 1000 copies printed. Polansky 1199.

[Click Below for Full Description]

TURING, Alan Mathison.
London: C.F. Hodgson and Son, 1936-37. First edition, journal issue in the original printed wrappers (main paper). "'On Computable Numbers' is regarded as the founding publication of the modern science of computing. It contributed vital ideas to the development, in the 1940s, of the electronic stored-programme digital computer. 'On Computable Numbers' is the birthplace of the fundamental principle of the modern computer, the idea of controlling the machine's operations by means of a programme of coded instructions stored in the computer's memory. In addition Turing charted areas of mathematics lying beyond the scope of the Turing machine. He proved that not all precisely stated mathematical problems can be solved by computing machines. One such is the Entscheidungsproblem or 'decision problem' ... In this one article, Turing ushered in both the modern computer and the mathematical study of the uncomputable" (Copeland, The Essential Turing, p. 6). The outstanding problem of mathematical logic at the time, the Entscheidungsproblem, posed by David Hilbert in 1928, asks whether there is an algorithm that can determine whether any given mathematical statement is true or not. "In the long view of intellectual history, I believe universal computation will stand as the single most important idea to emerge in the twentieth century. And this paper is where it first appeared with clarity" (Stephen Wolfram, in Alan Turing. His Work and Impact, p. 44). "Inspired by the human computer (i.e., the human engaged in computation), Turing described a notional machine that could read and write … [Click Below for Full Description]

Europewith all its culture is now seriously imperilled and stands no smallchance of being destroyed by its own internal disruption; and all thisis ultimately the fruit of the great religious revolution which beganfour hundred years ago." The portrait drawings by French emigre artist,Jean Challot, were printed in the Carman Process by the Cane Press, NewYork. Lukash, Ivan Sozontovich (1892-1940)
[Germany], 1936. Contemporary tan cloth binding (30 × 21.5 cm); gilt title to front board; typescript to rectos only (a few ribbon, but mostly carbon copies); [1], 2-239 leaves. Occasional annotations and corrections in ink by at least one hand, possibly by a native Russian speaker, judging from the cursive shapes. Spine extremities and corners slightly rubbed; else very good. Bound corrected typescript of an unpublished translation into German of Ivan Lukash's novel V'iuga (The Blizzard, written in approximately 1933-36), by an unidentified translator. With numerous small corrections and annotations in ink. The typescript appears to have been bound in Germany, judging from the typeface employed on the front board, most likely with the intent of finding a potential publisher in Berlin. To date, the only novel by Lukash to appear in German was Moscow in Flames (Berlin, 1931), translated by writer and musicologist Oskar von Riesemann (1880-1934). Lukash wrote V'iuga for an international literary contest announced in 1933 by the Catholic Academy of Social Education and Cooperation in Paris, which required authors to depict the psychology of Bolshevism and to capture the damage it had wrought to family, country, and society. He chose to set the novel in his native St. Petersburg; V'iuga depicts the tragic effects of WWI, the February and October Revolutions, and the ensuing Civil War on the inhabitants of an apartment building in the city center. In his preface to the first Russian edition of the novel, Lukash notes that along with one other Russian writer, he was initially aw … [Click Below for Full Description]
