N.P. [London]: Oxford Clarendon Press, 1936. First Edition; first printing. Octavo. Very good condition unfaded dark navy blue clothbound hardcover with bright gold titles and publisher's device, without dust jacket. Lightly bumped corners; very slight rubbing at head and foot of spine, and on bottom edge of the cloth-covered boards. Binding firm. Front pastedown endpaper has what appears to be the word "Boston" written in ink, just below two erased ink lines, each 2-3 inches long, (the erasure has abraded some of the paper of the endpaper - but only in the limited area of the erased lines - and left tiny specks of whatever was formerly written there.) Previous owner's last name and first initial written neatly and compactly in ink on the upper right corner of the front free endpaper. 1936 printing date on title page just beneath the publisher's name. No additional printings noted. "Printed in Great Britain" statement on the verso of the title page, which is otherwise blank. No marks to text. No foxing on any of the pages. Thurston, Lorrin A.; Sanford B. Dole; Andrew Farrell (ed)
Honolulu: Advertiser Publishing Co., Ltd. 1936. Octavo. Limited to 600 sets published for subscribers. A set of the memoirs of Sanford B. Dole and Lorrin A. Thurston published by the Advertising Publishing Company. This set is numbered 187 with the limitation slip mounted on the lining papers of each volume. Originally written for joint serial publication with Lorrin A. Thurston's memoirs in the Honolulu Advertiser. Thurston's chapter begins with Jack London's arrival on his yacht Snark in 1907. Thurston provides interesting details about London's fixed writing routine, his despising of what today would be called "political correctness" on the racial issues inherent in Hawaii, followed by Thurston's defense. The set is comprised of: Vol. I, Writings of Lorrin A. Thurston, 166p. index; Vol. II. Lorrina A. Thurston, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 664p.; Vol. III Sanford Dole, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 188p. index. From the controversy of Queen Lili'uokalani's authorship of Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen to the issue on the annexation of Hawaii (and even statehood [as Mahan advocated as an early proponent of geopolitical issues], this is an essential set for understanding the History of Hawaii from President Harrison to the period just before the Second World War. Although the three volumes has nearly 1,000 pages of text, the margins are wide and the print is large so that it is eminently readable. Bound in red patterned cloth letrtered in gilt, within blind stamped frame. A very good set with rubbing to joints and gilt fading.
[Click Below for Full Description]

ARNOLD, Thomas W., & J. V. S. Wilkinson (eds.)
Oxford: Privately printed by John Johnson at the Oxford University Press and published by Emery Walker, 1936. Oxford: Privately printed by John Johnson at the Oxford University Press and published by Emery Walker,, 1936. A vast survey of the Indian miniature artform 3 volumes, large folio. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges trimmed, others untrimmed. With 19 plates in colour and 84 in monochrome. Spine ends a little bumped, some markings to covers, discolouration to front cover of vol. I. A very good set. First edition, first impression. An enormous and finely illustrated production detailing the collection of Indian miniatures of Alfred Beatty (1875-1968), a copper mining tycoon who built up one of the world's greatest collections of western and oriental manuscripts. The cataloguing of Beatty's collection of Indian miniatures was originally undertaken by Thomas Walker Arnold. Upon his death in June 1930 the project was delayed, until James Vere Stuart Wilkinson resumed the process, including new additions to the collection. The manuscripts and miniatures detailed represent some of the finest products of the Mughal court painters from the 16th century onwards, alongside some of the work of artists from the provinces of the Mughal empire.
