October 14, 1936. Typed Letter Signed <I>"Edgar Rice Burroughs,"</I> on his corporate letterhead, one page, 8.5" x 11", Tarzana, California, October 14, 1936, to Walter Popek of Garfield, New Jersey. Light folds, else fine condition.<br /><br /> Burroughs writes to an autograph collector apologizing that he has <I>"no suitable photograph to autograph for your collection. I am, however autographing the card enclosed with your letter [not present], and am returning it herewith."</I> Burroughs adds, <I>"It is rather difficult to answer your last paragraph as, of course, my boyhood idols appear rather silly to me now, and none of my ambitions was along the writing line."</I> <br /><br />Burroughs had started life in the military, but failing the entrance exam for West Point, he ended up as an enlisted soldier in the 7th Cavarly stationed in Arizona. After being diagnosed with a heart problem, he was judged ineligible for military service and discharged in 1897. After a string of odd jobs without much direction, Burroughs began writing pulp fiction. After he made nearly $400 (roughly $8,800 today) from his selling his first story, "Under the Moons from Mars" in 1912, he soon quit his day job and began writing full-time. He remarked in 1929: "...if people were paid for writing rot such as I read in some of those magazines, [then] I could write stories just as rotten. As a matter of fact, although I had never written a story, I knew absolutely that I could write stories just as entertaining and probably a whole lot more so than any I chanced to read in those magazines."<br /><br … [Click Below for Full Description]

Deutsche Arbeitsfront (Herausgeber):
Berlin, Verlag der Deutschen Arbeitsfront, 1936. (noch zu Nr.13163:) ". . . [Click Below for Full Description]

MANN, Thomas.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, , 1936. Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Octavo. Original oatmeal cloth, titles to spine and front board in brown, rules in green, top edge green. With the typographical dust jacket designed by George Salter. An excellent copy in the jacket with lightly toned spine panel. First edition in English, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Mr Eric Estorick with my best wishes. New York, April '37. Thomas Mann". Estorick (1913–1993) was an American art dealer and sociologist, who studied and taught at New York University, becoming a lecturer in sociology in 1938. He interviewed Mann for his article "Thomas Mann: The Artist as Citizen" ( The Washington Square College Review, Vol. 1, No. 7, 1937), which likely brought him this inscribed copy of Stories of Three Decades. In 1939 Estorick collaborated with Mann's eldest daughter, Erika, on a paper ("Private and Governmental Aid of Refugees"). Estorick moved to London after World War II, where he founded the Estorick Collection of modern Italian painting in north London. The dust jacket, designed by George Salter, was the first design for Mann he had executed under Knopf, and it was the start of a successful partnership between the designer and publisher: "the titles for Knopf set him on course to become the premiere designer of Mann's works in America" (Thomas Hansen, Classic Book Jackets: The Design Legacy of George Salter, 2005. p. 33).

T.E.LAWRENCE
The Golden Cockerel Press, London(1936). The first publication of Lawrence's Oxford thesis (originally entitled 'The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture to the end of the Twelfth Century'). Limited to 1,000 numbered copies (this being #594) printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff into half morocco, gilt lettered at spines with five raised bands to each and cream cloth sides. 4to. Top edges gilt, other untrimmed. With over 150 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, but lacking the two folding maps which should be housed in a separate envelope at the rear. Cloth sides a little marked with just a touch of light tanning to extreme margins of the first four or five leaves of the first volume. Not a fine set, but really very good. O'Brien A118 & A189. "A first typewritten text of the thesis served as a draft for a corrected version, also typewritten, which was bound with numbered illustrations and submitted to the examiners. The author then began to revise the rough copy again in pencil, apparently with a view to publication, altering the wording and writing comments in the margins. The title 'Crusader Castles' appears only in this version. After the examination (in which he was placed in the First Class), one of the judges of the thesis urged the University Press to publish it in book form, saying however that not one of the illustrations could be spared; the cost was considered prohibitive." - from A.W.Lawrence's foreword.. MINKOV, Svetoslav

Reade, Rolf S. [Alfred Rose]
Privately Printed for Subscribers, London. 4to. Two volumes, pp. xii+398, pagination continuous. 1936 was important for two reasons. It marked the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, and the publication of this work, the most complete general bibliography of erotic literature yet attempted, listing over 5000 separate works. Until the publication of Kearney's The Private Case in 1981, it was the only guide to the erotica holdings of the British Museum Library. It is still of value, however, for information on the books in other collections, including the Vatican. This edition was limited to 200 hand-numbered copies, printed on hand-made paper. Original black cloth, leather labels, gilt, t.e.g. Some slight staining to front cover of volume 2, otherwise a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

MANN, Thomas.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1936 - Octavo. The dust jacket, designed by George Salter, was the first design for Mann he had executed under Knopf, and it was the start of a successful partnership between the designer and publisher: "the titles for Knopf set him on course to become the premiere designer of Mann's works in America" (Thomas Hansen, Classic Book Jackets: The Design Legacy of George Salter, 2005. p. 33). Gill, Eric
Pigotts, North Dean, High Wycombe: June 9, June 17, and July 2, 1933; and May 13, 1936. 1 p. each, annotations in another hand at bottom of one. 8vo. To the secretary of the Men's Dress Reform Party. Three letters to Dr. Alfred Charles Jordan (1872-1956), British radiologist, co-founder of the New Heath Society, and Honorary Secretary of the Men's Dress Reform Party. In the letter of June 9, Gill agrees to present a copy of his book, Clothes (1931), at the upcoming revel of the MDRP, and says he's asked his publisher Cape to send a copy for him to autograph. In the letter of June 17, he encloses the book and thanks Jordan for tickets to the event, saying he will "certainly come ... unless run over or in jug." In the letter of July 2, he writes, "I did enjoy the evening at Suffolk St. very much. But I was sorry so many of the men were merely in 'fancy' dress." He also accepts Jordan's invitation to have his name added to the organization's permanent committee. Accompanying the group is a Typed Letter Signed of Gill, dated May 13, 1936, in which Gill requests four issues of the MDRP publication. The subtitle of Gill's "Clothes," is "An essay upon the nature and significance of the natural and artificial integuments worn by men and women." In it Gill presents many ideas on dress reform for both men and women, among which was his advocacy the skirt or tunic by both men and women, a style that Gill himself adopted. The Men's Dress Reform Party was active from 1929-1940, and grew out of discussions within the Clothing Subcommittee of the New Health Society, which had been co-foun … [Click Below for Full Description]
