Margaret Mitchell
MITCHELL, MARGARET. Gone with the Wind. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition, first printing with "Published May, 1936" on the copyright page and "1936" on the title page, gray cloth lettered in blue, 1037 pages, measures 8.75" by 6", and in very good condition with rubbing on the boards, minor tearing on the top and bottom of the spine, the spine curving, minor toning to the endpapers, and an ownership signature written in pencil on the front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF GONE WITH THE WIND SIGNED BY MARGARET MITCHELL Signed by Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) on the front free endpaper in black ink. When Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind, the popular novel on the American Civil War and Reconstruction era in the deep South, she had no idea of the sensation it would become. It was an instant bestseller, selling over 1,000,000 copies within the first six months of its publication. In addition, it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and was given a motion picture in 1939 to much acclaim. Mitchell's life was tragically cut short when she was accidentally struck by a speeding car while crossing Peachtree Street in Atlanta on August 16, 1949. A SOUGHT-AFTER COPY OF THIS 20TH CENTURY CLASSIC, PARTICULARLY ELUSIVE IN UNINSCRIBED EXAMPLES Mitchell became so overwhelmed by the countless requests that she received to autograph copies of her novel that less than a year after its publication she vowed not to sign any more, not even for close friends or relatives. A sought-after copy of this 20th century classic, particularly elusive in uninscribed examples. [A … [Click Below for Full Description]

SUMMERS, Lt. Commander Toson O.
China, Southeast Asia, and Japan, 1936. Oblong quarto. Measuring 15" x 11". Full decorative embossed leather album bound with steel rivets. 102 pages interleaved with tissue containing 846 mostly black and white gelatin silver photographs; measuring between 1.25" x 1.5" to 7.75" x 9.75", with most measuring between 2.5" x 3.75" to 3.75" x 5". Approximately three-quarters of the photos are captioned and a few items of ephemera tipped in. Approximately 25-30 are commercial images or real photo postcards, but the vast majority are well-composed snapshots. Album is very good or better with some scuffing and loss to the lower corner of rear cover and lacking the clasp; contents are generally fine. This massive album was compiled by Lt. Commander Toson O. Summers, the medical officer of the USS *Augusta* which was the flagship of the Asiatic fleet. The path of the *Augusta* in 1936 is well-documented. Summers went to great lengths to map his tour of duty and this album reflects that concern. It is artfully designed (the album itself handmade by an artist in Chefoo (now Yantai), very well-captioned, and filled with an extraordinary amount of interesting images. Summers visited many cities in China including Shanghai, Amoy, Nanking, Soochow, Tsingtao, Peiping, and Chingwantao. Additionally Summers compiled many images from Japan, Bali, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia. Summers was an inveterate photographer with a keen eye for street imagery as well as native peoples and their cultures. Though an amateur, he artfully captured dozens of street scenes and markets; businesses … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is #837 of only 1,000 copies printed on Japon Vellum Paper. A hard to find edition of Joyce's classic work. Synopsis Ulysses is a novel by James Joyce, first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2, 1922, in Paris. Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, June 16, 1904. The title parallels and alludes to Odysseus , the hero of Homer's Odyssey. Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate June 16 as Bloomsday. Since publication, the book attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual "Joyce Wars." Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose--full of puns, parodies, and allusions--as well as its rich characterisations and broad humour, made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. ---------- About the A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marshall, George (director); Gene Fowler, Hal Long
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1936. First Draft Continuity [pre-production] script for the 1937 film, "Nancy Steele Is Missing!," seen here under its working title, "The Lost Nancy Steele." Producer Darryl F. Zanuck's working copy, with his name and extensive notations in holograph pencil on the title page and rear wrapper recto, and brief notations throughout. Additionally, the script also includes fourteen typed pages, on onionskin stock, headed "NOTES ON 'THE LOST NANCY STEELE'", presumably also written by Zanuck. On the title page, Zanuck reveals his dissatisfaction with Fowler and Long's first draft of the script: "What should have been a powerful box office smash melodrama with a dynamite situation has turned into a dull gloomy uninteresting tragedy that will scare even adults away / the whole flavor has been lost completely / the punch and fire has been cast aside / this is a sure box office flop as well as a very dull sappy picture / the character of Chadwick is OK / but the only bright spot / not only have we killed the flavor and real essence of the story but the story is also lost / the main character is a combination of lunatic -- I.W.W. Red -- Communist -- Radical -- Jean Hersholt and the most stupid man I've ever met / he is disgusting and kills the whole idea / the entire idea of regeneration is gone / I do not think we can save one scene or anything but Chadwick / the story was so simple, sound and now it is a lot of nothing / we must start over from scratch / why change plot? / we had a great idea / wonderful opening and a powerful theme / it could be a combinatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Wisden
1936. Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate.

Editors include Asa G. Randall, Nellie M. Nelson, William W. Lawson, Edgar F. Mills & Esther L. Wisewell. Scarce limited edition artist album, example #31 of 35 total. Signed at top of front cover by editor A. G. Randall who has several signed works within as well. Black cloth taped spine, card covers with large central printed title. Appears complete, c. 27 full page works of art, many wood-cuts or wood engravings plus some lithographs, most signed in pencil by the artist who made them. Paper used as backing sheets for the art is quite brittle, the artwork is printed on normal art paper which is much sturdier. By virtue of the limitation, undoubtedly rare. Bill Brandt (1904-1983)
First edition of Brandt's first book, belonging to friends of Brandt and his first wife, Eva Boros. The English at Home was published less than two years after Brandt arrived in London and after two unsuccessful approaches to other publishers. Brian Batsford, who had published an English edition of Brassai's Paris de Nuit in 1933, took on the project. 'Brandt enlivens even the more unconventional formula of The English at Home with his individualistic vision. His continental upbringing hamde him an insider and an outsider, and he thus casts a broader eye than usual on the Britain of the 1930s.... The images of cramped working-lass life in The English at Home must have shocked readers who expected a cosy, conventional look at the old country' (Parr & Badger, The Photobook, I, p. 138).
