Synopsis Ulysses is a novel by James Joyce, first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2, 1922, in Paris. Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, June 16, 1904. The title parallels and alludes to Odysseus , the hero of Homer's Odyssey. Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate June 16 as Bloomsday. Since publication, the book attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual "Joyce Wars." Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose--full of puns, parodies, and allusions--as well as its rich characterisations and broad humour, made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. ---------- About the A … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1964 the 'first' volume was published posthumously in Bonn by the Alexander Koenig Stiftung under the title Alexander Koenigs Reisen am Nil. Koenig had first published his studies on Egyptian birds of prey in the Journal für Ornithologie during the course of many years (1907-1932) under the title Avifauna Aegyptiaca, with some plates. All these were brought together and enlarged with additions and plates in Die Vögel am Nil. The plates that were also published in the journals are marked with 'Avif. Aeg.'. Contains 121 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 0.5" and 6" x 3" with captions. The front board is detached but present with some pages detached from the spine with tears, very good with near fine, lightly faded photographs. Vera Richards' scrapbook from South Dakota compiled between 1914 through 1936. The album is titled, "School Memories", and is a collection of photographs, paper cutouts, postcards, and other ephemera during different times in the woman's life jumping from school to working as a teacher after graduating. Richards is spoken of as, "a girl of excellent character of good appearance," and, "would be a great addition to any school and community" in a recommendation letter from one of the girls superiors to a potential job. There is a loose newspaper cutout talking about Richard's family hosting a dinner party for friends. In the beginning of the album, Richard's fellow classmate's names, birthdates, and address are written. The book is sectioned off starting with athletics after the empty student autographs section; however there are some teacher's autographs, "Yesterday is gone, today is your opportunity, tomorrow may never come to you." The next section has pictures of several men wearing football uniforms with their names and some information captioned below each player, "Wait till Mac gets mad! Then watch him make a touchdown!" LUCE, Henry R.)
1936. Large nearly square folio. Approximately 13.5" x 14.5". Full black morocco gilt, red morocco doublures, moire silk endpapers. Minor rubbing at the extremities, very near fine. The interior images are immaculate. Longwell was the editor of *Life* magazine beginning with its inception in 1936. This was presumably the only other copy of the magnificent "going-away-present" given to him when he left the magazine in 1954. After the title page is a typed letter on *Life* letterhead addressed to Longwell: "Dear Dan, We made this album for you because we thought you would like to see and keep a few of the many pictures in *Life* which will always remind us pleasantly of you. ." This is followed by 41 painstakingly printed full-page gelatin silver photographs, with a single page containing four smaller portrait images (for a total of 45 images) mounted on thick card leaves. Most of the larger images are a close variant of 7.5" x 9.25". The first three images, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, are of Longwell in swimming trunks, drinking and playing croquet with Luce. The rest of the images are beautifully printed images, several of them iconic, from the first two decades of the magazine, many with the photographer neatly identified in pencil below the image. Among the images are nine by Eisenstaedt, three by Hansel Mieth (the second woman photographer to join *Life*, and including her image of a male Macaque monkey in the water seeking escape from the island of Santiago near Puerto Rico), two by Peter Stackpole, two by Robert Capa (one of D-Day), one by Margaret Bourke-White of a b … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORWELL, George
Gollancz, 1936. First edition. Publisher's blue cloth with dark blue lettering. Signed by the author for fellow novelist Anthony Powell, "Geo. Orwell" on the front end paper, with Powell's bookplate to the front pastedown. A very good copy, light soiling with a little wear to the spine ends and rear joint and the faint remains of a Boots label to the front cover. The book which "would eventually produce one of his [Orwell's] most substantial adult friendships" (Taylor - Orwell The Life). Powell recalls buying this book and the friendship with Orwell which followed in the first volume of his autobiography, Infants of the Spring (1976). "When Down and Out in Paris and London appeared in 1933, someone recommended it . I read the book, and was impressed by its savagery and gloom. At the same time, I cannot claim to have immediately marked down Orwell as a writer of whom one would obviously hear more. However, a year or two later, when I saw a copy of Keep the Aspidistra Flying in a secondhand bookshop, I bought it. Again, I liked the novel for its violent feelings and presentation of a young man at the end of his tether, rather than for its form or style, which seemed strangely old fashioned in treatment . I spoke of the book dining with Cyril Connolly. Connolly then told me Orwell was one of his oldest friends . He urged me to write a fan letter. This I did, thereby making my first Orwell contact, in 1936" Powell included a copy of his recently self published Caledonia, and received a friendly, if hesitant, reply from Orwell. It was not until some five years later that they me … [Click Below for Full Description]

S.P.B. Mais had been Alec Waugh's influential English master at Sherborne. It is believed that Mais encouraged Alec to publish his controversial novel The Loom of Youth, in which the character of Ferrers is based on Mais. Malraux, Andre; Andre Gide; David Seymour (photographer
N.p. Vintage borderless photograph from an anti-fascist meeting in Paris in 1936, featuring novelist Andre Malraux speaking on a microphone with Nobel Prize winner Andre Gide seated at a table next to him. Photographer's rubber stamp to the verso, accompanied by holograph annotations in pencil, black ink, and red felt ink. Likely a photograph from a meeting of the Popular Front, a French alliance of various left-wing movements including communists and socialists during the interwar period. Andre Malraux was a widely-noted novelist and anti-fascist, who joined the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War on behalf of France. He later became Charles de Gaulle's Minister for Information, and later his Minister of Cultural Affairs, and would be remembered for his challenging viewpoints about the role of art in society. Andre Gide, as well, was a well known French novelist and staunch supporter of Communist Russia, until a trip to that country around the time of this photograph disillusioned him to that particular brand of communist thought. Photographed by Magnum Photos cooperative member David "Chim" Seymour, with his rubber stamp on the verso. As Magnum was not formed until 1947, it is likely Seymour added the stamp at a later date to a print in his collection. Magnum, which included early members like Robert Capa, Maria Eisner, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, was created as an international cooperative owned and administered entirely by the photographers themselves, and was one of the first of its kind. 10 x 6.5 inches. Very Good condition, with mild professional restoratio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marshall, George (director); Gene Fowler, Hal Long
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1936. First Draft Continuity [pre-production] script for the 1937 film, "Nancy Steele Is Missing!," seen here under its working title, "The Lost Nancy Steele." Producer Darryl F. Zanuck's working copy, with his name and extensive annotations in holograph pencil on the title page and rear wrapper recto, and brief annotations throughout. Additionally, the script also includes fourteen typed pages, on onionskin stock, headed "NOTES ON 'THE LOST NANCY STEELE'", presumably also written by Zanuck. On the title page, Zanuck reveals his dissatisfaction with Fowler and Long's first draft of the script: "What should have been a powerful box office smash melodrama with a dynamite situation has turned into a dull gloomy uninteresting tragedy that will scare even adults away / the whole flavor has been lost completely / the punch and fire has been cast aside / this is a sure box office flop as well as a very dull sappy picture / the character of Chadwick is OK / but the only bright spot / not only have we killed the flavor and real essence of the story but the story is also lost / the main character is a combination of lunatic - I.W.W. Red - Communist - Radical - Jean Hersholt and the most stupid man I've ever met / he is disgusting and kills the whole idea / the entire idea of regeneration is gone / I do not think we can save one scene or anything but Chadwick / the story was so simple, sound and now it is a lot of nothing / we must start over from scratch / why change plot? / we had a great idea / wonderful opening and a powerful theme / it could be a combinatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

From the library of the Fujii Shôten. String-bound, Japanese- style, fukuro-toji. Each volume has a table of contents page and 12 large color woodblock prints of insects in nature, tipped onto the folded page. A lovely production in an explicitly neo-Rimpa style (Kôrinfû means "Kôrin-style"). The printer/publisher Uchida was responsible for several wonderful books in color woodblock in the 1930s. Many consider this work their masterpiece and the beautiful prints have been broken up and sold separately through the years so a complete set like this has become very scarce. Also, even the individual prints one might find are usually foxed and discolored but in this example the prints themselves are in good condition. Though there is occasional foxing to the marginal backing paper, it does not extend to the prints themselves. Capp, Al (artist); Ed Dodd (cartoonist
N.p. Original four-panel artwork by Al Capp, dated June 25, 1936, of his seminal comic strip Li'l Abner. INSCRIBED to fellow cartoonist Ed Dodd in holograph ink on bottom margin: "To Ed Dodd / with good wishes / Al Capp." Holograph notation in pencil along top margin: "4. It'll Do - Plenty!" and "6-25" in blue holograph pencil under first panel. A tremendous association between two of the most beloved and prolific comic strip artists of the twentieth century. An early strip by Capp, this features Hattie Haggle,"richest woman in New York," having her nurse randomly picking a county directory to find someone to spitefully give her money away to. It is, of course, Dogpatch County, Kentucky, home of Li'l Abner. Alfred Gerald Caplin (Al Capp) was born in New Haven, Connecticut, where, at the age of nine, he was struck by a trolley car, requiring his left leg be amputated. He'd been in a coma and awoke to discover his leg removed. "I was indignant as hell about that leg," he'd say years later. Capp's notably dark, sardonic humor, as compared to his contemporaries, was likely, largely influenced by the young tragedy. Having never received a high school diploma, Capp attended three art schools, only to be thrown out of each one for inability to pay the tuition - the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Designers Art School in Boston. In 1932 he moved to Greenwich Village and worked turning out advertising scripts. A year later he was working on his first single panel "Colonel Gilfeather." In 1933 and 1934 Capp worked for Ham Fisher as a ghos … [Click Below for Full Description]

SARRE, Friedrich and Hermann TRENKWALD.
, . . 21, [3], [29]; [31]; 43, [28]; [32] pp.First and only edition of "the most important recent publication with wonderful reproductions of the best known carpets" (Ettinghausen 1936), here in very good condition, rebound in 4 high quality half calf volumes. The project was initiated by the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry, that previously published two other works on carpets: Orientalische Teppiche (1892) and Altorientalische Teppiche (1908). The present work by Sarre & Trenkwald has far more and better illustrations than the earlier works, with 120 fine collotype plates. The authors were highly regarded authorities in the field of Islamic art, especially Friedrich Sarre (1865-1945), "without doubt, one of the most influential figures regarding the scholarly formation of Islamic art" (Kadoi & Szanto). He was the director of the Museum für Islamische Kunst in Berlin and responsible for the formation of the "most comprehensive collection of Islamic art outside the Islamic world".The work is characterized by an emphasis on the technique of production. The plates that depict carpets in colour and black & white are preceded by a descriptive page that is sometimes illustrated with a schematic explanation of the knotting technique used for making the carpet. The first part, by Hermann Trenkwald, with 60 plates, is entirely devoted to carpets in the world-renowned collection of the Austrian Museum,. The second part, by Friedrich Sarre, also with 60 plates covers the greatest carpets in other collections throughout the world, including private collections such as that of Bar … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. New York: The Macmillan Company. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped, but read on) [a good solid copy with only light wear and a small stain at the bottom front gutter, affecting the first couple of leaves only; note, however, that the book's covers have a kind of mottled "sheen" to them, and I can't tell if this was part of the original design or whether it represents some later owner's misguided attempt to coat or laminate the covers in some fashion; either way, it's the sort of thing you won't be bothered by unless you actually decide to remove the dust jacket; the jacket itself is moderatedly edgeworn, with small bits of paper loss at seveal corners, miscellaneous creasing here and there (mostly at bottom right corner of the front panel), and some fading to the spine; the upper corner of the front jacket flap has had the original printed price clipped off, but replaced by a rubber-stamped price ($3.50) at the upper left corner (according to multiple contemporary reviews of the book, its original sales price was $3.50, so presumably this corner-clipping represents the publisher's last-minute decision (or correction)]. A landmark in American musicology. John Lomax, in his introduction, relates how and he and his son Alan first met Huddie Ledbetter (aka Lead Belly, later usually rendered as Leadbelly) at Louisiana's notorious Angola State Penitentiary in 1933, during their two-year ramble through nine Southern states, recording folk songs for the Library of Congress. Hiller, Karol (ed.)
Zwi?zek Zawodowy Polskich Plastików w ?ódzi, ?ód?, 1936. Illustrated with 24 black-and-white reproductions. 18 p. FORMA was a journal issued by the Association of Visual Artists and the Union of Polish Artists, both in ?ód?, and edited by Karol Hiller for the first four issues from 1932 to 1936; it was edited by Wegner with Strzemi?ski for the next three issues (the last, number 7, was destroyed by the Germans before it was released). Hiller designed the journal and this layout persisted through the remaining issues after he left. The journal had limited distribution but held a prominent place in the dialogues of contemporary art in Poland, especially regarding the debate in constructivism with Strzemi?ski and Hiller, with the issues of a pure orthodoxy vs a looser heterodoxy and the lines which were promoted or discouraged with the chief protagonists of ?ód? (W?adys?aw Strzemi?ski, Katarzyna Kobro, the associates of a.r., and Karol Hiller). Hiller (1891-1939) is renowned as a painter, printmaker, photographer and art critic, a representative of constructivist trend in the 20s and biomorphic abstraction in the 30s, the creator of heliographics. He is recognized as one of the major artists of 20th century Poland. This publication, both during Hiller's tenure and beyond, is a treasure trove of theories, polemics and the exchange of the working artists in the supportive environment found in interwar ?ód? for the visual avant-garde. The contributors embraced and promulgated an international perspective while adhering to a very individual expression. Extremely uncommon, copies a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hikmet, Nazim (1902-1963) and Ali Suavi (Suavi Sonar, 1910 or 1913-1994), designer
[Istanbul]: Kader Basimevi 1936. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers by Ali Suavi; 96 pp. With pink errata slip. Light soil and discoloration to wrappers and spine; else about very good. In this nonfiction work based on Western sources, Hikmet fiercely attacks Hitler and the rising Nazi regime. The book was published shortly before his repeated arrest and sentencing in 1938, after which no more works were able to appear in his native Turkey. With a striking cover designed by Ali Suavi (1910 or 1913-1994), who Suavi designed most of the avant-garde-inflected covers of Hikmet's books. Little is known about Suavi, who was a famous designer of books and later became known as a photographer. Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963) is considered the founder of modern Turkish poetry, who transcended Ottoman versification and absorbed the influence of Russian futurist writers such as Sergei Esenin, but above all Vladimir Mayakovsky. Aside from the "step-ladder" form of verse, he shared with Mayakovsky his sociopolitical engagement, as well as Esenin's love for the simple folk and his origins. Impressed by the 1917 October Revolution in Russia, he resisted the occupying powers in Constantinple and fled to the countryside, where he sought to connect with various socialist and libertarian organizations. In 1920s, he traveled to Russia twice for extended periods of time, where he studied in Moscow and was in close contact with Soviet Futurist poets. Upon his return in 1928 he was subject to imprisonment and harsh repressions, including a ban on publishing, but nevertheless garnered success with reade … [Click Below for Full Description]

The publication was first printed in 1930, as a projected yearbook, however, only three issues seem to have been published in 1930, 1935 and 1936, with this last issue being the most scarce. As of May 2020, KVK and OCLC show no copies of this issue outside of Poland.
