Miami and Suburbs - 1936 - Miami Beach Sheet 1 - (Miami Beach - area bound by 7th St., South end of Miami Beach/South Beach, Biscayne Bay, and Atlantic Ocean)

1936 - This very detailed map is from an early twentieth century fire insurance atlas for Greater Miami, FL., “Plat Book of Greater Miami Florida and Suburbs from official records, private plans and actual surveys…”, published by G.M. Hopkins Co. Fire insurance atlases are famous for providing the most complete and accurate cartographic record available for the time period. Much of Miami and vicinity depicted here has been dramatically altered or has completely changed. The map is drawn on the grand scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet. Every existing building is shown, with many color coded to indicate building material (brick, frame, stone or concrete, etc.). Apartment houses, stables, electric railways, steam railroads, house numbers, street widths, lot numbers, and a wealth of other details are indicated. Map has pasted down overlays that contain additions or corrections. This map is very desirable for anyone interested in the history of Miami and Miami Beach.

Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York 1936 - First Printing. Octavo; green cloth, with titles stamped in black and orange on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 292pp. Inscribed by Burnett opposite the title page to director Jean Negulesco: "For Jean Negulesco - a good director and a good guy. W.R. Burnett." Previous owner's initials discreetly blind-stamped on preliminary and terminal pages, else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, lightly rubbed, with some shallow chipping to extremities, a bit of the usual light discoloration to spine, and partial separation to front flap fold; Very Good. More than likely this copy was inscribed during the filming of 'Nobody Lives Forever' in 1946, a film directed by Negulesco and based on a book and screenplay by Burnett. A novel about an Ohio Governor named Read Cole, whose initial concerns for real issues become subsumed by political forces as he rises to the top of the heap. An important cautionary tale on the dangers of the political machine, preceding Robert Penn Warren's 'All The King's Men' by nealy a decade. A scarce, early Burnett title, and a tremendous association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Crusader Castles. Complete in two volumes comprising 'The Thesis' and 'The Letters'. With forewords by A.W.Lawrence and Mrs [Sarah] Lawrence.

The Golden Cockerel Press, London, 1936. The first publication of Lawrence's Oxford thesis (originally entitled 'The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture to the end of the Twelfth Century'). Limited to 1,000 numbered copies (this being #594) printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff into half morocco, gilt lettered at spines with five raised bands to each and cream cloth sides. 4to. Top edges gilt, other untrimmed. With over 150 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, but lacking the two folding maps which should be housed in a separate envelope at the rear. Cloth sides a little marked with just a touch of light tanning to extreme margins of the first four or five leaves of the first volume. Not a fine set, but really very good. O'Brien A118 & A189. "A first typewritten text of the thesis served as a draft for a corrected version, also typewritten, which was bound with numbered illustrations and submitted to the examiners. The author then began to revise the rough copy again in pencil, apparently with a view to publication, altering the wording and writing comments in the margins. The title 'Crusader Castles' appears only in this version. After the examination (in which he was placed in the First Class), one of the judges of the thesis urged the University Press to publish it in book form, saying however that not one of the illustrations could be spared; the cost was considered prohibitive." - from A.W.Lawrence's foreword.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1936. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, two line border to head and foot of covers in blind, top edge brown. Spine rolled, head and tail of spine creased, some barely visible marks to rear board, top edge foxed, an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade-cycle … in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economics to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM). His conclusion, namely that "the regulation of the trade-cycle - that is to say the control of booms and slumps, the level of employment, the wage-scale and the flow of investment - must be the responsibility of governments", permanently altered the terms of economic debate and considerations of the role of government in managing the economy (or not).

First edition. A presentation copy from one ghost story writer to another with signed inscription by Wells on the half title page to Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) who lived in Regent's Park from 1935 until after the end of World War II: "To Elizabeth Bowen / with warmest regards / H. G." "This story is a satire written in the form of an allegory. In its symbolism it has close affinities with THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU (1896) and MR. BLETTSWORTHY ON RAMPOLE ISLAND (1928)." - Hammond, p. 44. "In some ways a more mature telling and redirection of 'The Red Room,' or hauntings as due to mental fragments that have assumed a power beyond their immediate origin. It is also a symbolic statement of the psychosis emergent within Western culture just before World War II. 'A sickness in the very ground of our lives, breaking out here and there and filling men's minds with a paralyzing irrational fear.' The ghost story as a statement of the spiritual breakdown of society ... One of Wells's better late works." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1683. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1224. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-360. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 225. Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 174. Bleiler (1978), p. 205. Reginald 15020. Hammond B18.         Gone With the Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936. First edition of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by Margaret Mitchell on the front free end paper. First printing, with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. First issue dust jacket, with Gone with the Wind listed in the second column of the booklist on the back panel, with $3.00 cost on the front flap. Near fine in the original dust jacket with some light professional restoration to the extremities. A very nice example. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents ... it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. ... " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.
