        DIE PROPHETIE [INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR]

Krakow. Komisja Orientalistyczna. Krakow: Nakladem Polskiej Akademji Umiejetnosci, 1936 - 1st Edition. Later boards. 8vo. Vi, 194 pages; 25 cm. 6 word initialled inscription by the author. In German. Title translates to "Prophecy. " Bibliographical footnotes. Extremely rare first edition of Abraham Joshua Heschel’s (1907-1972) dissertation on the Hebrew prophets, the work that became key to his close relationship with Martin Luther King, jr as King’s closest Jewish colleague. Martin Luther King, jr, and Heschel "initially bonded over the prophets. King was drawn to Heschel’s intimate knowledge of the topic (Heschel’s masterwork, in a body of masterworks, was his book The Prophets) , and Heschel in turn admired King’s devotion to the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites, adapted to the narrative of the civil rights struggle in the 1950s and ’60s.Heschel.can also be considered a kind of prophet himself. The main job of the prophets of the Bible, after all, is to hold their people’s feet to the fire. Moses railed at the weak and foolish Israelites who strayed from the path the minute their leader ascended to the mountaintop to commune with God. King fulminated against the war in Southeast Asia as well as against the injustices rampant in white American culture toward those whom it had enslaved for hundreds of years. Heschel supported both these causes, incurring the disapproval of some Jewish leaders when he did not hesitate to vigorously excoriate U. S. Involvement in Vietnam, preaching widely on the subject, writing letters to presidents, and being a spokesman for other religious leaders in meetings with high-level military strategists like Secretary of State Dean Rusk.Heschel, like King, had the charisma a prophet needs. He was impossible to dismiss, even when his message stung. The consummate gadfly, he shined a bright light on the ills of American society and also on those of American Judaism in the mid-20th century, which he saw as stultifying, airless, soulless, moribund. He was an outlier on one crisis we face today: how to make Judaism not only appealing but actually indispensable for Jews of future generations. His words were bracing and his exhortations powerful, but, rendered in such breathtakingly poetic language (as well as expressed verbally in his disarming Polish accent) , they seem like a loving gift from a benevolent elder, not a rebuke: He even warned warmly. He was a Jew who had suffered and seen too much suffering, and who, unlike the rest of us, was capable of vision on a greater scale, the prophetic scale. He knew what he was talking about, and, like King, he believed people could rise up, be their best selves, and behave with righteousness and even with holiness. Heschel died in 1972, four years after his friend King was shot dead. It’s a long time ago now. The prophets we have today don’t speak in King’s mellifluous rhetoric or write in Heschel’s enchanting prose. Maybe we have murdered or hounded to death those with the capacity to make our hearts soar with their words of justice and compassion; we’ve gotten pretty cynical, maybe too cynical for those kinds of voices" (Sian Gibby in Tablet Magazine, 2016) . Abraham Joshua Heschel (January 11, 1907 – December 23, 1972) was a Polish-born American rabbi and one of the leading Jewish theologians and Jewish philosophers of the 20th century. In late October 1938, when Heschel was living in a rented room in the home of a Jewish family in Frankfurt, he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Poland. He spent ten months lecturing on Jewish philosophy and Torah at Warsaw's Institute for Jewish Studies. Six weeks before the German invasion of Poland, Heschel left Warsaw for London with the help of Julian Morgenstern, president of Hebrew Union College, who had been working to obtain visas for Jewish scholars in Europe.Heschel believed the teachings of the Hebrew prophets were a clarion call for social action in the United States and worked for African Americans' civil rights and against the Vietnam War. He also specifically criticized what he cal [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        THE ARTISTRY OF MIXING DRINKS.

Pp 156, black and white illustrations and maps, some outlined or lettered in red, each page with the FM monogram border in red, original wrappers with printed French wrappers. Number 008 with the printed line "specially printed on hand-made paper for H. H. Prince Bishnu of Nepal" and inscribed in ink "Very respectfully Frank Meier". The first edition consisted of 26 copies, A to Z, reserved for Meier, and 300 copies on hand-made paper numbered 1 to 123 and CCXXIV to CCC. This appears to be slightly different to the copies held on COPAC and Worldcat - these have a different pagination and no mention of the edition number, suggesting there may also have been a 'trade' edition. A superb example of Art Deco book design. Frank Meier was the first head bartender at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, in the Cafe Parisian, which later became Bar Hemingway. As well as creating legendary cocktails such as the Bee's Knees, he continued working through the German occupation of France and frequently assisted the resistance movement and helped many Jewish residents obtain false documents.

London: John Murray, 1936 - Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, facsimile of Stark's signature to front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Spine gently rolled, scattered pale markings to cloth, contents slightly toned, a few trivial spots to front free endpaper. A very good copy. Title page printed in red and black, 96 plates, 2 folding maps. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Mr. Guest with affectionate and grateful thanks for much help, from Freya May 1936" on the front free endpaper. In the acknowledgements Stark thanks Guest "for his invaluable assistance during the writing of my book – an assistance to which such Islamic learning as appears within its pages is chiefly due". After achieving recognition with her first book The Valley of Assassins (1934), which described travels in Iraq and Iran, Stark went to Hadramawt, southern Arabia, in search of ancient trade routes, landing at Mukallah and travelling inland to Tarim via Jol, Wadi Daw'an, Khuraybah, and such ancient cities as Shibam and Sayun. She returned a celebrity, and her book, "often considered a classic of travel writing" (ODNB) was awarded the Mungo Park medal by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.         Babar Daily Sketch collection.

Daily Sketch, , 1937, London 1936 - CONDITION: Very Good; no names or other marks, carefully compiled by a collector, some tears at bottom of gutters of an inch or so, longer ones in vol #1, interior paper bright and newspaper in good condition, solidly bound, cover soil on #3. About 6 pages were not pasted in, which makes dating possible. To our knowledge, only one of the approximately 170 installments (not counted) is missing. We do not know if these volumes have been deacidified, our brief index supplied. London: Daily Sketch, 1936, 1937; contains Story of Babar, Travels, King, Children, Father Christmas: these are the first appearances of Babar and his Children and Babar and Father Christmas; 7 uniform folio hardback scrapbooks of different colours but the same neat handmade title design, containing about 170 installments of the stories done in ink and monochrome watercolour; paper boards, cloth spine in matching colour, contrasting coloured paper, each page reinforced with tape at gutter, generally one installment per page, almost all pasted down; about 24 pp. ea. book, 10 3/4" x 11.78", 27x34.5cm. Each installment contains a large, dramatic title, a large drawing in line and half-tone, an editor's "prequel" of a few sentences, the actual text in the large italic hand of the books, and a little blurb about tomorrow's story. The reader is often encouraged to write to Babar (wish we had those letters!) and little competitions are announced. The The first three volumes, Story, Travels, and much of Babar the King, also contain a handwritten retelling of the story in simpler language. After Jean de Brunhoff's death in October of 1937, the last two stories were edited, coloured, and reissued as books in the same format as the earlier ones in the series. JdeB's brother Michel made the editorial decisions and another colorist filled in the drawings (the final cover reworked by Laurent, age 13.) Many interesting mysteries await the owner of these volumes, differences in sequence, in vocabulary and tone, elaborations and editing of the stories, a few additional pages and drawings. Even the published books have tiny differences. I have to point out that the tones of the book reproductions and the later monotone drawings look very much the same. Interestingly, the last installment of Father Christmas, Friday, January 22, 1937, says in the sidebar: "A NEW STORY Jean de Brunhoff has prepared for you another delightful story with pictures even more amusing than any you have yet seen. You will read all about it on this page to-morrow." Perhaps Zephir was planned? We have many more jpgs of this collection readily available, just ask.         The Paradise of Fools. Being an Account by a Member of the Party, of the Expedition which covered 6,300 miles of the Libyan Desert by Motor-car in 1935.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1936 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spine, scorpion device gilt to the front board. With the striking pictorial dust jacket. A little chafed head and tail of the spine, corners a touch bumped, free endpapers differentially browned, minor production flaw at the head of the rear hinge, else very good in slightly rubbed jacket, foxed on the flaps, with some slightly amateurish restoration at the head of the spine, but pictorially and textually complete. Bookplate of Charles Edward Rusbridge, who served in Libya with the RAOC during World War II, to front pastedown. Frontispiece and 22 other plates, folding coloured map at the rear. First edition of this lively and uncommon account of an expedition described in Fliegel Jezerniczky's on-line Libyan Desert bibliography as "an extraordinary journey", during which a party led by Mason and W. B. Kennedy Shaw traversed "virtually all major parts of the Libyan desert. They started from Kharga, reaching the Gilf Kebir via Abu Ballas, making the first crossing of the dune belt in the 'Gap' to enter Wadi Hamra, discovering two major wadis transversing the southern Gilf (and locating a cave with rock paintings on the col between them), then continuing via Selima and Erdi to El Fasher (where they met Almásy and party). On the northbound leg they traversed the southern Libyan Desert, continuing to Uweinat, passing the western side of the Gilf, then traversing the Great Sand Sea to reach Siwa". The cave at Mogharet el Kantara containing the paintings of cattle and a homestead scene, the only known site containing rock art in the south-eastern portion of the Gilf Kebir, is now known as Shaw's Cave. Shaw published his findings in the Geographical Journal ("An Expedition in the Southern Lybian Desert", vol. 87, 1936) and Antiquity ("Rock Paintings in the Lybian Desert", vol. 10, 1936). During the Second World War Shaw went on to become a founder member of the Long Range Desert Group, whose scorpion badge was very similar to that used here on the front board. Mason, who had previously spent time fur-trapping in Canada, and sparring with Jack Sharkey, was recruited to naval intelligence by Ian Fleming, lending a number of characteristics – physical and temperamental – and terrific tales to the composite who became James Bond.         FOUR DAYS WAR ...

London: Robert Hale & Company,. [1936]. original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained yellow.. A bright, nearly fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket. (designed by Ward Stone) with shelf wear at tail of spine panel and. corner tips, shallow chip from head of spine panel, some wrinkling at. lower front corner tip, and dust soiling to spine and rear panels.. Nevertheless a nice example of this rare jacket. Formerly science. fiction author / editor / publisher Donald A. Wollheim's copy with. his name stamped in ink on rear free endpaper. (#149808). First edition. Sequel to PRELUDE IN PRAGUE: A STORY OF THE WAR OF 1938 (1935). "PRELUDE IN PRAGUE ends with the delivery of a German ultimatum to Britain, and its sequel ... takes up the story with its rejection. The book goes on to describe the devastation of Britain by bombers which carry not only explosives but chemical and biological weapons. The war becomes a world war -- and eventually takes on the semblance of a Holy War, with the Christian nations (led by America) arrayed against the forces of a new paganism, symbolized by Germany's new military dictator, Prince von Teufel. Fowler Wright had intended (in 1933) to call his future war story THE SPLENDID CURSE, and there are fragments of dialogue in FOUR DAYS WAR which concentrate on the degeneracy of contemporary society and the possibility of its corruption being cleansed by the war. The horror of the vision of destruction, though, overwhelms this cynical thread of argument, and it has quite disappeared by the time the story extends into the third volume of the trilogy, MEGIDDO'S RIDGE (1937)." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, pp. 195-96.         Legion Condor Erinnerungs-Photographienalbum mit über 750 Original-Photographien des Unteroffiziers Willy Heyn. Legion Condor photograph album with more than 750 original photographs by Willy Heyn.

Spanien, 1936.
