Geier eine tote Schlange fressend. Aquarellierte Tuschzeichnung von der Feder. Signiert u. bezeichnet. Undatiert.

1936. . Konservativismus bekannt. - Vgl. NDB 23, S. 73 ff. - Schwach gebräunt, verso vereinzelte Flecken, feine Nadelstiche in allen 4 Ecken.

        La Septième Face Du Dé

Paris: Éditions Jeanne Bucher, 1936. A little light discoloration at the edges, faint beginnings of a split no more than 1 cm at the top of the front panel by the string; overall a beautiful, near fine copy in hand-sewn wrappers as issued. The nicest copy I have seen.. Deluxe Edition of one of the greatest Surrealist books ever published, combining radical ideas in various media, including photography, collage, and graphic design. String-tied, hand-sewn small quarto. Letter "F" of twenty-four lettered artists' copies printed on special blue paper; SIGNED on a marbled cutout affixed to the colophon by Hugnet and Marcel Duchamp, whose collage adorns the cover and incorporates a Man Ray photograph. With an extra original collage by Hugnet, as issued in the deluxe edition, also SIGNED and dated by him. An historically significant association copy linking two masters of surrealism, INSCRIBED in the month of publication by Hugnet to André Breton, the founder and pope of the movement: "A André Breton / au monde merveilleux qu'il habite / ou vivent ses poemes et leurs / ombres diamentifiers / tres affectueusements / Georges Hugnet / 27 Juin 1936" [to André Breton, to the marvelous world he inhabits, where dwell his poems and their shimmering shadows, very fondly, Georges Hugnet, 27 June 1936]." This particular copy has an idiosyncratic quirk: it is lacking one illustration, plate 7, of 20 total. Hugnet was a fastidious worker and assembled all copies himself. The missing illustration depicts a beautiful naked woman chained at the hands. Sexual tension was rampant amongst the surrealists, and Hugnet and Breton were known to have quarreled over women. The figure in the missing plate resembles Breton's wife, Simone Collinet. Whatever the reason, it is hard to imagine Hugnet omitted the illustration intentionally. Since leaving Breton's collection in the landmark Breton sale in Paris, 2003, this copy has surfaced once more at auction, in the Christie's Rare Photobook sale, New York, 2008

The general theory of employment, interest and money.

Macmillan, London 1936 - 8vo (215x134 mm). xii, 403 pp. Original publisher's cloth lettered in gilt on spine, in original dustwrapper. Clean pages with no markings or annotations. Endpapers tanned. Former owner's inscription on flyleaf. Slight mould staining to front pastedown. Moderate wear and scuffing to boards, mainly on spine, edges and corners. The lower front edge has some damage on the corner and in the spine region, and crushing to the spine ends. Some bleach markings and dulling to cloth of boards. Dust jacked expertly restored with repairs to chipped and torn paper at upper and lower margin of covers and spine affecting letters. The dust jacket is heavily tanned. Still a good copy. ---- PMM 423. First edition, 2nd printing (March 1936). The most influential work of economics of modern times. Keynes was to dominate the international conference at Bretton Woods, out of which came the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank; and his influence during the ensuing decades, even on his theoretical opponents, has been such that a highly placed American official recently remarked that 'we are all Keynesians today' (PMM 423).         The Thirty-Seventh. History of the Thirty-Seventh Battalion AIF

Melbourne, printed by The Modern Printing Company, 1936. Octavo, [xxiv] (last blank), 354, [2] pages with 12 maps and a 3-page facsimile letter plus 20 pages of plates (from photographs). Cloth a little flecked; spine lightly sunned; boards slightly bowed; edges, endpapers and the first few leaves lightly foxed, with the front flyleaf unevenly offset; basically, an excellent copy. This copy is signed by the author on the half-title. Lieutenant Norman Gordon McNicol enlisted in the 37th in early 1916; he was several times badly wounded in action, and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917.         OF HUMAN BONDAGE

Doubleday, Doran, Garden City 1936 - The First Trade Edition of the First Illustrated Edition of this famous book. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper: "For James W. Poling/to whose labours I owe many happy hours/W. Somerset Maugham." Poling was an author of several books, including THE FINAL FACE OF EVE with Evelyn Lancaster, and an editor at Doubleday, Doran, one it appears who worked on Maugham's books. Perhaps Maugham's greatest effort, OF HUMAN BONDAGE was made into a film in 1934 starring Bette Davis in her breakout performance. It was remade in 1946 with Eleanor Parker as the manipulative Mildred Rogers and again in 1964 with Kim Novak as Mildred. This edition came out twenty years after the book's success and is graced with illustrations by Randolph Schwabe. There was a limited signed edition of this book issued simultaneously with this trade edition. We have had many copies of it over the years, but we have never come across a trade edition inscribed by Maugham, let alone one with such a fine inscription. Spine sunned. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Southern Gates of Arabia. A Journey in the Hadhramaut.

London: John Murray, 1936 - Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, facsimile of Stark's signature to front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Spine gently rolled, scattered pale markings to cloth, contents slightly toned, a few trivial spots to front free endpaper. A very good copy. Title page printed in red and black, 96 plates, 2 folding maps. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Mr. Guest with affectionate and grateful thanks for much help, from Freya May 1936" on the front free endpaper. Arthur Rhuvon Guest (1869–1946) was an accomplished Arabist who helped Stark with her original researches into Hadramawt history and read her book in manuscript: in the acknowledgements Stark thanks Guest "for his invaluable assistance during the writing of my book – an assistance to which such Islamic learning as appears within its pages is chiefly due". After achieving recognition with her first book The Valley of Assassins (1934), which described travels in Iraq and Iran, Stark went to Hadramawt, southern Arabia, in search of ancient trade routes, landing at Mukallah and travelling inland to Tarim via Jol, Wadi Daw'an, Khuraybah, and such ancient cities as Shibam and Sayun. She returned a celebrity, and her book, "often considered a classic of travel writing" (ODNB) was awarded the Mungo Park medal by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
