Nothing So Monstrous

New York: Pynson Printers. 1936. First. First Separate Edition (originally published as part of The Pastures of Heaven, 1932); Goldstone A2f; noting that the paper supply allowed only 370 copies to be printed. Lightly worn at the edges, about fine. Published for subscribers to use as Christmas gifts, the colophon was customized with the subscriber's name following "made by the Pynson Printers of New York at the request of____ for presentation to [blank]." Goldstone notes 50 copies were so designated for Elmer Adler, 100 for Frederick B. Adams, Jr., 150 for Ben Abramson, 50 for Edwin J. Beinecke and 20 for antiquarian bookseller Howard Mott (although evidently fewer were issued with his name; only one is known). Unknown to Goldstone, this is one of apparently only six copies with Steinbeck's name in the colophon. In a letter to Frederick B. Adams, Jr., one of the publishers, Steinbeck requested six copies as he couldn't "afford any more." Steinbeck has filled in the colophon with the name of Elsie and Martin Ray, and has Inscribed upside-down on the rear free endpaper, "For Rusty and Elsie, Whose back rubbing has made me a little less monstrous than I have been. John Steinbeck." In the proper place, right side up on the front free endpaper, the author has Inscribed "I am a dope (see last page) John Steinbeck." Steinbeck was a guest at Martin (Rusty) and Elsie Ray's Mt. Eden Winery in Saratoga, California, where he is said to have written a portion of The Grapes of Wrath. .

        Love Night. A Laotian Gallantry

The Golden Cockerel Press,, 1936.. Limited Edition, #31/200.. Hardcover. Near Fine. 141pp, with the title and 14 other engravings by Buckland Wright. Contents clean and fresh and unmarked. Mathers' introduction explains the Laotian tradition of the Love Night, but claims no more cultural veracity for his portrayal of the exotic in this play than is generally found in operettas. This being one of those copies numbered 6 to 80 specially bound and accompanied by a set of 6 extra plates, it has the full green vellum binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with gilt decorated edges to the boards, cockerel motif and spine title in gilt. There is some slight bowing of the boards, a little minor rubbing to the edges and a tiny mark to the centre of the upper board. The pocket provided inside the back cover to house the extra prints being tight, they have been conserved in a paper folder: this lies alongside the book in the new custom marbled slipcase with silk pull ribbon. 26.7x17.5cms overall. A beautiful copy.

The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission.Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: for the American Physical Society by the American Institute of Physics, First edition.

Rare offprint of this seminal paper, which presents the first comprehensive theory of nuclear fission, discovered just six months earlier by Hahn and Strassmann. This theory was essential for the development of the atomic bomb. Based on the liquid-drop model of the nucleus introduced by Bohr & Kalckar in 1936, "the theory of Bohr and Wheeler was accepted, and continued to remain ever since, as the standard description of the mechanism of nuclear fission" (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory 6, p. 1006).

"Wheeler's technical mastery of physics is best seen in the classic paper of Bohr and Wheeler, 'The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission' (1939), published on the day when Hitler's armies marched into Poland and World War II began. Bohr and Wheeler wrote the paper in Princeton, where Bohr was visiting in the spring of 1939, a few months after the discovery of fission. The paper is a masterpiece of clear thinking and lucid writing. It reveals, at the center of the mystery of fission, a tiny world where everything can be calculated and everything understood. The tiny world is a nucleus of uranium 236, formed when a neutron is freshly captured by a nucleus of uranium 235.

"The uranium 236 nucleus sits precisely on the border between classical and quantum physics. Seen from the classical point of view, it is a liquid drop composed of a positively charged fluid. The electrostatic force that is trying to split it apart is balanced by the nuclear surface tension that is holding it together. The energy supplied by the captured neutron causes the drop to oscillate in various normal modes that can be calculated classically. Seen from the quantum point of view, the nucleus is a superposition of a variety of quantum states leading to different final outcomes. The final outcome may be a uranium 235 nucleus with a re-emitted neutron, or a uranium 236 nucleus with an emitted gamma-ray, or a pair of fission-fragment nuclei with one or more free neutrons. Bohr and Wheeler calculate the cross-section for fission of uranium 235 by a slow neutron and get the right answer within a factor of two. Their calculation is a marvellous demonstration of the power of classical mechanics and quantum mechanics working together. By studying this process in detail, they show how the complementary views provided by classical and quantum pictures are both essential to the understanding of nature. Without the combined power of classical and quantum concepts, the intricacies of the fission process could never have been understood. Bohr's notion of complementarity is triumphantly vindicated" ('John Archibald Wheeler,' Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society 154, No. 1, March 2010, pp. 126-7).. Offprint from: Physical Review, Vol. 56, No. 5, September 1, 1939, 426-450 [3:blank], original printed wrappers with some light wear and mild sunning, spine strip with a 6 cm tear, still a very good copy of the rare offprint. On p.433 there is a technical marginal note in Swedish and on p.430 a decimal in table has been corrected with reference to another paper by Bohr and Wheeler

California Arts & Architecture - Six Early Issues

Western States Publishing Company. Los Angeles. Western States Publishing Company. 1936 - 1939 Bound in pictorial wrappers. Collection is cased in a custom flexible portfolio. Folio. 13" x 10". Illustrated with photographs, detailed plans, period advertiaing, etc. California Arts & Architecture was formed in 1929 by a merger of Pacific Coast Architect, established 1911, and California Southland, established 1918. Architecturally it was devoted to eclectic residential design-Tudor, Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Georgian, California amorphous. It preferred classic in larger projects, and now and then Art Deco (the Richfield Building, Bullocks Wilshire, both in Los Angeles) In 1930 it was a substantial magazine. Issues ran from 70 to 80 pages with lots of advertising. The editor was then Harris Allen, AIA, and there were familiar names among its contributors and advisors-Roland Coates, Sumner Spaulding, Ralph Flewelling, Wallace Neff. By 1933 the Great Depression had starved it down to 30 pages and subsequently into bankruptcy where John Entenza found it in 1938. Publication in Arts & Architecture became a portal to national and international recognition many for West coast Architects and a showcase for their cutting edge modernism. The magazine morphed into Arts & architecture in 1944. Arguably its most notable achievement was its Case Study House Program which, for 20 years advocated and influenced each evolutionary advancement in American residential design.A rare gathering of early, pre- A & A issues. All issues present usual sporadic soiling, chipping, light staining and several pencil markings to covers. Usual wear to spines with some minor splitting and chipping but all well attatched. One spine has been earlier strenthened with cello-tape. Several incidences of innocuous pencil annotation to interiors. Issues have a bit of a musty odor typical of old magazines. All in all, a Very Good collection.

        Red Hot and Blue

New York: Random House. 1936. First. First edition. A bit of foxing to the boards, and a touch of rubbing, all considered a very good or better copy of a book which, because of the fragile silk-over-boards binding, is generally found in poor condition. Issued without dustwrapper. Copy number 84 of 300 copies Signed by the author/composer (of which 250 were for sale). On the front pastedown is the small bookplate of the composer's wife, Linda Porter. The Porters were married from 1919 to her death in 1954, and Linda has been portrayed in film biographies of Cole Porter by Alexis Smith (1946's Night and Day) and Ashley Judd (2004's De-Lovely). Despite Cole Porter's well-documented homosexuality and the common assumption that their marriage was merely one of convenience, they appeared to be a genuinely compatible couple. .

Small Archive Documenting Camp-life at the Dan Beard Camp, Boys Scout Troop 1 in Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1936-1938

Dan Beard Camp Near Hawley, Pennsylvania, 1936. An exceptionally scarce collection of memorabilia and ephemera from Daniel Carter Beard's summer camp. Beard, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America built the camp on the site of his hunting lodge, which was erected in 1883. He operated the camp from the early 1920s until 1939. Camp activities and awards were based on those in Beard's Handbook for the Sons of Daniel Boone, however campers also earned Scouting rank and merit badges as the campers formed Pike County, Pennsylvania BSA Troop #1. The collection includes 1) an 8" x 10" photograph of Beard in uniform signed "Dan Beard," 2) a typed letter on official, illustrated Boy Scouts of America letterhead signed "Daniel C. Beard," 3) five multi-color camp award certificates signed "Daniel C. Beard," 4) a number of official camp letters and records regarding one of the campers, Courtland Brown, 5) four American Red Cross first aid and life saving cards awarded to Courtland Brown at the Dan Beard Camp, 6) two 8" x 10" photographs of campers, one showing them in formation and one showing them engaged in craft activities, 7) four 3.5" x 6" photographs of campers and their tents, 8) a beaded "buckskin badge" totem, 9) two postcards of Camp Lenape, which I believe succeeded the Dan Beard Camp after it closed, and 10) newspaper articles regarding Beard's 88th birthday, his death, and his funeral. All of the photographs, signed letter, certificates, and postcards are in very nice shape. Some of the other documents have marginal insect predation. The certificates and camp photographs have scrapbook page remnants on the reverse. . Ephemera. Very Good.
