        Memoirs of an Unconventional Soldier

London: Ivor Nicholson and Watson Limited,, 1936. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, red top-stain. Double portrait frontispiece and 7 other plates, 5 folding maps and 11 pages of diagrams at the rear. A little rubbed, the spine sunned, top-stain a touch faded and with a slight tide-mark in the rear corner, endpapers and edges mildly foxed, overall a very good copy. First edition of this far from common autobiography of the pioneer of all tank pioneers. A wonderful association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper; "To Cuthbert Headlam - in remembrance of the days in which we lived, and each in our own small way strove to do something worth doing - from JFC Fuller, 24/4/36," and with a one-page autograph letter signed from Fuller to Headlam of the same date, together with Headlam's version of their meeting in a page of pencilled notes. In it Fuller apologises for the account of given in the book of his meeting with Headlam during the War. As Fuller recalled it, he was requested to "give all the assistance [he] could to Major C. Headlam, who had been instructed to write a Tank Manual." Fuller found this strange as "thus far all notes etc., on tank tactics and training had been written by myself." Not so strange, as Headlam was at this time the British Expeditionary Force's principal doctrine writer. Headlam visited Fuller at Tank Corps HQ at Bermicourt Château "to be primed up. He stated quite frankly that he knew nothing about tanks. Then I asked him if he were a regular soldier, and as he said 'No,' I replied; 'Well, anyhow you will start without a handicap." Headlam remembered differently, as his pencilled notes included here show. When he had confessed to his lack of knowledge about tanks, Fuller had asked him how he could possibly write a manual on the subject, and in answer to his enquiry about the available literature had thrown open "a huge cupboard which went all along the wall - thus displaying endless files." To which Headlam explained that he couldn't possibly wade through "all that stuff," and requested that Fuller "sort out the files you think most important … what I want is a good brief." Headlam concludes "We parted firm friends and he sent me the files … I produced the manual which (for the time being at any rate) satisfied the tank men and the infantry commanders. Of course it was quite obvious that JF was anxious to write the manual himself, but that he was quite the wrong man to do so." In his letter Fuller apologises for appearing "disparaging," and agrees that "I ought to have mentioned the pamphlet, it was a good one, but like so many of GHQ productions came out too late to be of real use." Concluding, "What I liked about it most was that you did not see difficulties. I am always accused for overlooking the difficulties of others; but surely nine-tenths of the art of war consists in doing this." Headlam's engraved armorial bookplate to the front pastedown.

        Test Tube Baby

New York: Godwin, Publishers. Good. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [ex-rental library book, marked only with stamped library name on both endpapers ("Property of Green Tree Library"), moderate external wear, front hinge a little weak, spotting/soiling to covers]. The second of three pulp novels published published by Fuller under his own name in the 1930s (he claimed in his autobiography to have written many more, under a variety of pseudonyms). The story, as Fuller explained it, has to do with a young man who had been "conceived scientifically, then brought up by his mother to be the ideal son." However, Mom wasn't counting on her grown-up boy eventually learning some additional facts of life from an amoral young lady named Peggy, "a fascinating wench who may not have eaten her spinach but certainly knew her onions." A rarity for sure, and like Fuller's first novel, "Burn, Baby, Burn!," a vivid embodiment of the future film director's pulp-fiction-tabloid-journalism sensibility. .

        Gone With the Wind

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936 First edition, first printing, dated May 1936. Finely bound in full blue Morocco, with five raised bands and gilt ruled panels to the spine, gilt lettering and contrasting leather labels to the spine. A near fine or better copy, with a hint of rubbing to the spine, light spotting to the front free endpapers and the half-title page, a hint of spotting to the page edges, else fine. Overall, a clean and extremely attractive copy. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perhaps best described as a work of historical fiction, Gone with the Wind also has many of the trappings of a traditional bildungsroman and romance novel, although critics argue that it does not fully fall under the category of either genre. The novel tells of archetypal Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara as she grows from a young woman into maturity against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Like many of the early 20th century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South. While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. Also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

cm 21,2 x 31. Brossure sciolte in buone condizioni, pp.16 cadauna. Small Archive Documenting Camp-life at the Dan Beard Camp, Boys Scout Troop 1 in Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1936-1938

Dan Beard Camp Near Hawley, Pennsylvania, 1936. An exceptionally scarce collection of memorabilia and ephemera from Daniel Carter Beard's summer camp. Beard, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America built the camp on the site of his hunting lodge, which was erected in 1883. He operated the camp from the early 1920s until 1939. Camp activities and awards were based on those in Beard's Handbook for the Sons of Daniel Boone, however campers also earned Scouting rank and merit badges as the campers formed Pike County, Pennsylvania BSA Troop #1. The collection includes 1) an 8" x 10" photograph of Beard in uniform signed "Dan Beard," 2) a typed letter on official, illustrated Boy Scouts of America letterhead signed "Daniel C. Beard," 3) five multi-color camp award certificates signed "Daniel C. Beard," 4) a number of official camp letters and records regarding one of the campers, Courtland Brown, 5) four American Red Cross first aid and life saving cards awarded to Courtland Brown at the Dan Beard Camp, 6) two 8" x 10" photographs of campers, one showing them in formation and one showing them engaged in craft activities, 7) four 3.5" x 6" photographs of campers and their tents, 8) a beaded "buckskin badge" totem, 9) two postcards of Camp Lenape, which I believe succeeded the Dan Beard Camp after it closed, and 10) newspaper articles regarding Beard's 88th birthday, his death, and his funeral. All of the photographs, signed letter, certificates, and postcards are in very nice shape. Some of the other documents have marginal insect predation. The certificates and camp photographs have scrapbook page remnants on the reverse. . Ephemera. Very Good.

Chip on dj at top of spine intrudes on the tops of two letters in the title, but it is still legible. Chip on front of dj at top edge. A small Budapest bookseller's label on the inside front cover. This volume is signed by two of the short story authors, Frigyes Karinthy, and Jozsef Tersanszky, and a third author with an unidentifiable signature, and dated 29/9/37. Karinthy was a Hungarian author, playwright, journalist and poet who is known as the originator of the idea of "six degrees of separation", which he first elaborated in the 1929 story "Chains". This concept posits that every person on Earth is connected through a chain of friends or acquaintances to every other person on Earth by no more than six intermediaries, or degrees. Karinthy is also known for "Voyage to Faremido", which is a continuation of Swift's adventures of Gulliver, and "Capillaria", a satire of the struggle between the sexes. This volume is a selection of thirty short stories by thirty Hungarian authors; introducing some of them to the English reading public. Translated into English by Lawrence Wolfe and with an Introduction by Alexander Korda. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Epistolari. Correspondència. Local. Reus. Baix Camp. Tarragona. Història.
