        Photograph Album of a Participant.

[Berlin, 1936].. 8vo. Oblong album, leather over cream paper boards, string-tied, silver title and Olympic design to front, twine stitching to perimeter. Contains 56 black and white photographs measuring 310 x 240 mm, mounted with clear photo corners, each leaf separated with webbed tissue guard. Two additional photographs loosely placed within. Some loss to leather spine, verso only, otherwise in very good condition, a pleasing album with crisp images.. These images, captured firsthand by a participating athlete in the Olympic games, center around the Berlin Olympic Stadium, where the athletic and track events took place, revealing the photographer's sport. We also find images of runners on a practice course, a high jumper, an equestrian event, spectators, security officials, and guards, some of the latter sporting binoculars for surveillance, others armed with long rifles. Olympic monuments include the Marathon Gate pillars from which was hung the iconic five ring symbol, the enormous receptacle for the Olympic Flame, and one of the sculptures of athletes which today are the subject of discord by some. City streets are saturated with political propaganda flags, whilst symbolic Olympic flags make but a mere discreet dispersing appearance among them. Two views show an airship blimp with the Germany's new national symbol hovering overhead, while a few inner city views show athletes running with the torch ceremoniously for the civilians. Elements of domination, superiority and mastery are captured two-fold in this unusual album of images, first and foremost in the display of a grand competition event of athletic champions from around the world, and secondly, in the less than subtle propaganda that would inevitably pierce the otherwise peaceful images of global collaboration and common ground. Rare to find an album by a professional athlete yet an amateur photographer of these historic Olympic Games.

- Sehr seltenes Zeitzeugnis!

        Gone With The Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936. Later printing. Near fine in a just about near fine jacket. Corners lightly bumped; else fine. Signed by Mitchell on the front free endpaper, in a strong, clear hand. A beautiful example of the second issue jacket, showing a trace of light soiling along the upper edge, very slight edgewear, corners lightly rubbed. The jacket is unclipped, showing the $3.00 price on the lower front flap, and has the 'New Macmillan Books' notice on the rear panel, with this title as the first in the left-hand column. Included is a letter of provenance from the previous owner, detailing how the book came to be signed. Overall quite an attractive signed copy of this highlight in American genre fiction.

Small Archive Documenting Camp-life at the Dan Beard Camp, Boys Scout Troop 1 in Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1936-1938

Dan Beard Camp Near Hawley, Pennsylvania, 1936. Ephemera. Very Good. Ephemera. An exceptionally scarce collection of memorabilia and ephemera from Daniel Carter Beard's summer camp. Beard, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America built the camp on the site of his hunting lodge, which was erected in 1883. He operated the camp from the early 1920s until 1939. Camp activities and awards were based on those in Beard's Handbook for the Sons of Daniel Boone, however campers also earned Scouting rank and merit badges as the campers formed Pike County, Pennsylvania BSA Troop #1. The collection includes 1) an 8" x 10" photograph of Beard in uniform signed "Dan Beard," 2) a typed letter on official, illustrated Boy Scouts of America letterhead signed "Daniel C. Beard," 3) five multi-color camp award certificates signed "Daniel C. Beard," 4) a number of official camp letters and records regarding one of the campers, Courtland Brown, 5) four American Red Cross first aid and life saving cards awarded to Courtland Brown at the Dan Beard Camp, 6) two 8" x 10" photographs of campers, one showing them in formation and one showing them engaged in craft activities, 7) four 3.5" x 6" photographs of campers and their tents, 8) a beaded "buckskin badge" totem, 9) two postcards of Camp Lenape, which I believe succeeded the Dan Beard Camp after it closed, and 10) newspaper articles regarding Beard's 88th birthday, his death, and his funeral. All of the photographs, signed letter, certificates, and postcards are in very nice shape. Some of the other documents have marginal insect predation. The certificates and camp photographs have scrapbook page remnants on the reverse.
