Tales of Mystery and Imagination. Illustrated by Harry Clarke

Tudor Publishing Co., New York, 1936., 1936. 4to., pp. 412. With colour frontispiece and 31 plates, of which 7 are coloured. Fine (small crease to frontis). Publisher's black cloth. In near fine unfaded dust-wrapper, merely a few signs of minor edgewear. A lovely copy. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly wierd tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent death, in cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining) Queen's Quorum (their first Cornerstone title), Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. Peter Haining; Crime Fiction. Listed in 100 Books That Shaped World History [Raftery, 2002]. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [1972]. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'; No.273; 'Amercan Sci-Fi'.

        THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH

Visionary Publishing Co, Everett 1936 - First edition. [The precise state/issue/printing of this variant has not been clearly established. Nor, for that matter, has the exact priority been clearly established for nearly any of combination of variants that have been reported]. This is one of an unknown, but reportedly small, number of copies that surfaced years ago, from storage in the publisher's archives. The text paper is quite white and fresh, as is the paper stock of the Dust Wrapper. The the black cloth casing [that is, the boards] is consistent with most others that I have seen. Book and Dust Wrapper [white paper, without the Frank Utpatel artwork] both have horizontal, mixed case, silver lettering. 158 pages, illustrated. As New [About Fine] copy in As New [Fine] Dust Wrapper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph account by Frederick Leman Whelan of a visit by him to the Soviet Union in 1936, as leader of 'the League of Nations Union party' of British 'useful idiots'; with other matter relating to the U.S.S.R.

'To Leningrad & Moscow Intourist "S.S. Cooperazia". Sat. 27th June to Sunday 19th July' First entry dated 22 June 1936 - Small 4to, 61 pp, with the first four pages unpaginated and the last ones paginated 1-57. In notebook of good laid paper, in decorative boards. Text clear and complete. Very good, on lightly-aged paper; in worn and chipped wraps, with 'U.S.S.R.' on spine and front board. Various addresses by Whelan inside the front cover, with the date 1936 amended to 1945 and 1950. Pages of slogans and abbreviations are followed by the notebook itself. The volume intersperses notes on the visit (ending at p.31) with extracts of quotations, statistics and other matter about the Soviet Union. The first entry, dated 22 June 1936, gives the names and details of the eleven members of 'the party to U.S.S.R.', with Whelan naming himself 'Leader of the party'. The group includes the artist Priscilla Thorneycroft, the Rev. Henry Iselin, and Councillor Arnold Kenyon of Ashton under Lyne ('Interested in Industrial & Social Con.'). 'We leave Hayes Wharf, London Bridge, by M. V. Sortongflot (Soviet Mercantile Fleet) on Sat. 27th June and are due back at Hayes Wharf on Sunday. 19th July'. Whelen's first impressions of the ship are 'very favourable'. 'The crew and the officials seem very pleasant.' Three days later the ship enters the Kiel canal: 'Propaganda is entirely absent. There is not even a picture visible of either Lenin or Stalin. The only books seem to be those brought on board by the passengers. The boat is scrupulously clean. The sailors seem to spend their leisure scrubbing the decks or polishing where polishing is possible or washing steps and windows. An atmosphere of complete friendliness.' Whelen transcribes a number of 'appreciations' in 'The Traveller's Book in the Salon of the "Cooperazia"', noting that 'Among them a large number of American travellers express extreme indignation at Hearst's accusations of starvation in Soviet Russia.' After a journey of five days the party arrive in Leningrad, which strikes Whelen as 'a happy, orderly, and cheerful city. I saw very few soldiers. The police, or militia, or whatever is the correct name, seemed friendly with the people. [.] Little boys frequently asked for stamps. Boys and older people also joined up with us at the least encouragement and talked and showed us the way. I was surprised at the number who spoke German.' He finds the female 'Guides of "Intourist" 'charming and competent. They descibe things with great clarity. No obvious propaganda.' On 9 July the party are in Moscow, where one of their first visits is to the 'Commune for Derelict Boys': 'Later girls were included. One of the first waif boys married a girl in the Village and is now Director of the Boot Factory. The boys at first objected to girls being received. As the Director put it "The criminals refused to receive the prostitutes". Started 12 years ago'. In later entries others join the party (on one tour they are joined by the American playwright Elmer Rice). Whelen gives a long account of a 'Talk with A. Neyman, Director, Third Western Department' at the People's Commisariat of Foreign Affairs in Narkomindel. On 11 July they go to 'VOKS', where they are 'received by AMDOR of the Anglo American Dept. by Mrs. Kislova and Miss Plakshina, our interpreter, who had accompanied us'. He describes 'the Propaganda Film "Cirkus"'. Long description of conversation with 'Mr. AROSEV, the President of Voks'. The party's 'last combined excursion and one of the most delightful' is a journey 'by car a few miles out of Moscow to the Malablovsky Children's Village in the pine woods'. Description of village and conversation with children. 'When we left they crowded round our car shout "Good bye" which they had just proudly learnt from us. We gave them 3 cheers and they vigorously imitated us. I was presented with a bouquet of flowers, a new experience for me. Oh! the Russian country roads'. Of Andre Gide Whelen writes: 'I met Gide at Leningrad. He was with a group of French authors. He had been in Moscow for the Funeral of Gorki on 20. 6. 36 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

KAGAYAKU NIPPON DAIHAKURANKAI [THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF BRILLIANT JAPA

1936 - [JAPANESE POSTER] Osaka Mainichi Shimbunsha. KAGAYAKU NIPPON DAIHAKURANKAI [THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF BRILLIANT JAPAN] & KAGAYAKU NIPPONHAKU Annaiki. The poster was printed by Osaka Seihan printing company in their patented high-quality "HB" process, which they used to reproduce the effect of color woodblock, etc. With an (unread) artist's seal. Dated on the recto April/May 1936 this large poster (60.8 X 107 cm.) displays bold colors and near abstract design which shows the progress of Japanese industry as a freighter ship evolves pictorially in ascent through a great gear wheel, to an airplane, and then a skyscraper with pennants, all mediated by repeated circular images of a golden sun and red sun akadama images from the national flag. Considering its size, the fragility of the paper and its age, the edgewear and creasing, along with a bit of foxing, leaves this piece still unusually clean and bright with older backing and color restoration. Presents very well. Perhaps the most interesting and arresting piece of industrial art design from its time we have seen in a poster format. The accompanying large 8vo. brochure in color wraps is the guidebook for the Exposition. Printed as a revised edition at the time of the show, 1936. Illustrated internally with b+w photo illustrations of exhibits, ceremonies, etc., etc. The rear cover reproduces the very poster that we are offering here. The guidebook is quite worn, with some paper repairs. Very scarce and interesting combination of these ephemeral items from Japan's prewar golden age of design. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

GEORGES HUGNET: LA SEPTIEME FACE DU DÉ: POEMES - DECOUPAGES (COUVERTURE DE MARCEL DUCHAMP)

(HUGNET, GEORGES) (DUCHAMP, MARCEL). Hugnet, Georges. GEORGES HUGNET: LA SEPTIEME FACE DU DÉ: POEMES - DECOUPAGES (COUVERTURE DE MARCEL DUCHAMP). Paris: Editions Jeanne Bucher, 1936. First Edition 1/250. 4to. Sewn Illustrated Wrappers. Livre D'Artiste. Good +./No Jacket - As Issued.. (84pp), profusely illustrated in small woodcuts along with 15 color and 5 full page monochrome collotype plates + b&w cover. Cover designed by Marcel Duchamp. Text in French. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "La Septieme Face du Dé" is repeatedly acknowledged as one of the triumphs of the Surrealist illustrated book. It masterfully combines twenty of Hugnet's prose poems alongside overtly erotic, beautifully collaged and photomontaged images. The cover design and typography by Marcel Duchamp was created especially for the publication featuring a Man Ray photograph of the sculpture "Why Not Sneeze Rrose Selavy". This example (number forty-four of the two hundred and fifty copies on vélin) shows soiling, patination, and wear to the wrappers - most notably a tiny chip missing from the front cover at the crown of the spine and diagonal soft-creases through each of its foredge corners. The top and bottom edges of the wrappers show some wear and abrading, and the rear cover is slightly sunned along its extremities. The contents and textblock are intact and sound, and for the most part quite bright though showing a bit of foxing to the inside front cover, the front free endpaper, and the first few pages along the foredge. The edges display typical mild age patination and soiling, and there is in addition a tiny diagonal soft-crease to a portion of the textblock at the upper foredge corner. Still in all, this is a most presentable copy of this exquisite tome (cited on pages 92-93 of "The Book of 101 Books") that has been housed in a modest protective custom cloth chemise slipcase. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Negro Folk Songs As Sung By Lead Belly, "King of the Twelve-String Guitar Players of the World," Long-Time Convict in the Penitentiaries of Texas and Louisiana

New York: Macmillan Company, 1936. First Edition. The second collaborative effort by John and Alan Lomax, less a study of Negro folk songs than the oral autobiography of Huddie William Ledbetter, known to his friends as "Lead Belly." While traveling the southern states recording folk songs for the Library of Congress, the Lomax's met Ledbetter - a double murderer - at the State Penitentiary in Angola, Louisiana. The convict was known for his skill with a guitar, and was kept as a trusty by the warden, frequently called on to play and sing for guests. Upon his release, Ledbetter went to work for John Lomax, assisting him with recordings and acting as his driver. Much of the narrative is told in Ledbetter's rich dialect, telling of his upbringing, life, women, his crimes, and his time spent in prisons. An extensive collection of blues and folk ballads is gathered, with frequent notes offered either by Lomax or Ledbetter. Lead Belly went on to have a career as a highly-regarded performer until his death in 1949. A book that is seldom found in dustjacket, the present copy being one of the more attractive examples we have seen. First Printing. Small quarto (24cm); coarse-grained yellow cloth, with titles stamped in red on spine and front panel; black topstain; dustjacket; 242pp. Topstain slightly faded, faint offsetting from jacket flaps onto pastedowns and endpapers, with a few foxed spots to right edge of textblock; Near Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, but with a $3.50 rubberstamped price to the left of the clip (consistent with all other copies we have seen); some shallow chipping to spine ends and corners (not affecting lettering), orange coloring faded to yellow on spine panel, with a few small splash marks and faint vertical crease to same; lightly edgeworn, with a few tears archivally mended on verso, and some old, faint dampstaining along upper flap folds, mostly noticeable on verso; still a complete, Very Good example.

MacMillan Co. New York 1936 - First Edition. Small quarto, original cloth and Otto Hesse photograph illustrated dustjacket. "Lead Belly, a double murderer, has sung his way to pardons in the Texas and Louisiana Penitentiaries. His throat has been cut from ear to ear and his left cheek slashed open in barrell-house brawls. The accordion, guitar, mouth-harp, piano and bass-fiddle have all been easy for him, but the twelve-string guitar, of which he is the self-acknowledged 'king' is his favorite instrument."         JAFSIE TELLS ALL! Revealing the Inside Story of the Lindbergh-Hauptmann Case

Jonathan Lee 1936 - Hardback. Dr. John F. (Jafsie) Condon's own story revealing the inside story of the Lindbergh-Hauptmann kidnapping. Taken from the dw. 'blurb' : 'Of "the greatest criminal case in all human history," probably ten million words have been written. In this case, three figures stand out above all others. They are : Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, Dr. John F. (Jafsie) Condon, and Bruno Richard Hauptmann. The first will probably never tell his story, the third cannot tell his, while as to the second - for almost four years he steadfastly refused to do so, except for his trial testimony, even in the face of misrepresentation, vituperation, and vile slander. Why did Jafsie refuse to answer his slanderers directly? Only those who know this remarkable man personally understand. He insisted on maintaining silence until the appeal of Hauptmann's conviction had been passed upon by the Highest Court. Yet Doctor Condon, for fifty years a teacher in our public schools.beloved by his neighbors and their children; this same Doctor Condon, 75 years of age. a devoted father, gentle of voice, kindly of manner, considerate of others, ever ready to help the unfortunate. he it is who was called "King of the Kidnappers," and "Hauptmann's Accomplice." This might well have been a matter for laughter and ridicule on Doctor Condon's part, for he has a keen sense of humor, had not a mother's broken heart in her agony of tears, stilled his lips. But now the scene has changed. Now the trial is long past, the verdict given, the conviction upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States. Now the real truth can be told; the scandal-mongers, the yellow press, the vultures and jackals of tragedy and death driven to cover. In the following pages, the gentle Doctor Condon, Titan of courage, devout man of faith, fervent patriot, tells for the permanent record of History.the true story of the vital, heroic part he played in the Lindbergh-Hauptmann case - a part that will go down through Time as one of the finest, most unselfish records of conduct any man could bequeath to posterity.' Illus. 238pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Nr. F. in chipped and frayed pcdw. An extremely rare title.         Cup of Gold.

NY, Covici Friede, 1936 - NY, Covici Friede, 1936, first edition thus, dust jacket. Hardcover. This is commonly refered to as the first edition, second issue, with a new preface by Lewis Gannett and with a different title page, binding, and dust jacket design, with the misspelling (Covici Freide) blacked out on the jacket spine with the proper spelling (Covici Friede) printed above and with no mention of Steinbeck as the author of Of Mice and Men on the front jacket panel, the Goldstone & Payne bibliography of Steinbeck errs in its suggestion that this book came from unbound sheets of the first edition by McBride in 1929, recent scholarship by Phil Ralls in his Steinbeck Firsts shows that this is an entirely new printing, making it truly the second edition, Covici had promised Steinbeck that he would keep his earlier books in print, he used photo-offset plates made from the McBride first edition to make his own printing which makes this book the true second edition and not the first edition, second issue, Ralls shows that Lawrence Clark Powell actually makes this point in the April 17, 1937 issue of "Publisher's Weekly," a physical examination of the McBride first edition and this book shows, for example, that there are different widths of the text blocks, the McBride being 28 mm wide while this true second edition measures 33 mm, see Goldstone & Payne A1b, Morrow 2, this specific copy is a Family Copy that belonged to his sister, Elizabeth Ainsworth with her bookplate to the front free endpaper, it was part of the family collection that was auctioned a few years ago, laid in loosely is a manuscript note (probably in his sister's hand) stating "First novel/written when John/was just past 20/years old,". Very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Document Signed. 1936

1936 - ("Leo Chico Marx" signed as secretary; "Arthur Harpo Marx" as president) in black fountain pen ink on the first page. And on the second page we have the full signatures of all four brothers: Leo Chico Marx; Arthur Harop Marx; Groucho Julius H. Marx; Herbert Zeppo Marx. The Minutes of a Special Meeting of the Board of Directors of Marx Bros., Inc., February 28, 1936. 2 separate pages (recto only). 8" x 13". Very good (minor signs of handling). All four brothers sign this document which reads like a gag from one of their films: "The President announced that inasmuch as the corporation has never engaged in any activities whatsoever, and that the purpose for which it was incorporated has been abandoned, it was, in his opinion, desirable to dissolve the same" [Attributes: Signed Copy]
