        Turn, Magic Wheel

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. (1936). First. First edition. Some foxing and wear to the boards, spine repaired, a very good copy in a supplied, good dustwrapper with a crease on the spine and with small chips and tears. This copy Inscribed but not signed by Powell to her close friend Hannah Green: "To Green, My Queen. Euch." Green made a point of collecting Powell's older books, apparently and as evidenced here, much to Powell's dismay. By consensus the best novel on New York's bohemian life by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist." Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of the Tim Page biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. An exceptionally scarce book. .

The Equinox of the Gods. The Official Organ of the A.'.A.'. Vol. III No. III

London: O.T.O BM/JPKH 1936, 1st Edition. 1st Issue. () v, 137pp. Very good. Quarto. Original cream cloth with gilt lettering and decorations on spine and front. Slight concaving over upper front cover. Some dirt-soiling to boards. Minor professional restoration to front hinges. Japon vellum paper with untrimmed foredges. Small errata slip, usually tipped in the last page, has been neatly removed. Extremely minor foxing to head of some pages. Two color plates, two additional pictorial title pages for Liber Al Vel Legis, and Genesis Libri Al. Additional 65 pages facsimile manuscript in card covers, inserted in back pocket. Original advertisement and order form sits loosely in front enpapers, considerably foxed. This title was Crowley's first published study on the origins of the Book of the Law, including essays on history and meaning, reproductions, and translations of the "Stele of Revealing". There is a full sized facsimile of the original manuscript in card covers with red and black letting on cover, enclosed in the back pocket. The book originally recieved poor sales and was almost completely rejected by booksellers. It was "reissued" in 1937, using unsold copies of the 1936 edition, the only change made was the date on the title page. Once again due to disappointing sales, most of the pages remained unbound and were sent to Karl Germer in the USA. They appeared in many hybrid versions until 1987. This is certainly one of the best copies of the rare true first issue extant..

        Turn, Magic Wheel

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. (1936). First. First edition. A couple of pages a little roughly opened with corresponding small tears, thus near fine in fine dustwrapper with a very short tear. Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. Probably the nicest copy we've seen of an exceptionally scarce book. .

        THE WHITE SAVANNAHS. Signed

MacMillan, Toronto 1936 - THE DEDICATION COPY OF THE FIRST STUDY OF CANADIAN-LITERATURE FROM A MODERNIST POINT OF VIEW. Collin, W. E. THE WHITE SAVANNAHS. Toronto: MacMillan, Toronto, 1936. First Edition. Green cloth. (X), 288pp. A fine lovely copy in a remarkable dustwrapper. THE DEDICATION COPY, inscribed: "from Edwin / June, 1936" after the printed dedication: " For Louise", the author's wife. This important volume has the distinction of being both "the first book length work on English-Canadian literature written from a purely critical standpoint" (Germaine Warkentin) and the first book of modernist criticism in English-Canadian Lit. containing essays on Lampman, Pickthall, Pratt, Kennedy, Klein, Smith, Scott, Le Franc, and Livesay originally published as a series in the Canadian Forum and in the University of Toronto Quarterly. Collin apparently titled the collection The White Savannahs because he was living in London Ontario at the time, which he felt was so devoid of culture it was much like living in a desert. [William Edwin Collin, literary critic (b at Oakenshaw, Eng 9 May 1893; d at London, Ont 21 Dec 1984). The White Savannahs, a modernist study of 9 Canadian poets, established him as a major Canadian critic. Collin applied the ideas of such writers as T.S. Eliot, Sir James Frazer & the French Symbolists to Canadian poetry. A fine prose stylist, he also wrote a study of Paul-Jean Toulet and many articles and reviews, including from 1941 to 1956 the yearly review of French Canadian literature for the University of Toronto Quarterly - The Canadian Encyclopedia]. "In 1982 critic, W. E. Collin recalled the excitement with which he discovered the poems of Leo [Kennedy] in a copy of the FORUM in 1930, and the urgency that sent him hurrying to Montreal to meet with the poet and his colleagues. The FORUM's editor had supplied him with addresses. Collin was struck by the proximity of the poets who were turning the desert imagery of T.S. Eliot to their own uses: "I exclaimed, 'They all live in Montreal, Kennedy, Smith, Scott, Klein, They all live in Montreal.'" Collin would eventually celebrate the group in his critical anthology THE WHITE SAVANNAHS [1936]." - AS THOUGH LIFE MATTERED, by Patricia A. Morley, 1994. The most extraordinary copy.         'Uummannaq' 3 smukke originalfotografier af Jette Bang. Alle SIGNERET af kunstneren, i samtidige rammer (3 original vintage photographic prints by Jette Bang - in contemporary frames, all SIGNED in hand by the photographer).

Set of 3 original vintage photographs from 'Uummannaq', not dated but from Jette Bang's visit in 1936. Each app. 16 x 22 cm in frame. All signed in hand and in contemporary, gilt wooden frames.. Jette Bang (1914-1964) , important Danish photographer and film maker known for the photographs and films she shot in Greenland, depicting the country and the way of life of its inhabitants before their old culture disappeared. The present photos are from Bang's first travel to Greenland in 1936 where she spent eight months taking photographs of the traditional lifestyle of the Greenlandic Inuit, which was beginning to die out as a result of European influence. She travelled around on dog sleds and lived with the natives, sharing their way of life. The result was 400 photographs which were exhibited at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in 1937. Some were published in her book Grønland (1940) with a foreword by Minister of State Thorvald Stauning. The book was an eyeopener for the Danes and later chosen as one of the most important Danish photobooks as part of the Hasselblad Open Book exhibition 2004. - "Uummannaq" is Greenlandic for 'heart shaped' and here the name of a prominent mountain with two summits of similar height, hence the name. Uummannaq is 1,170 metres (3,839 ft) high and located on the small Uummannaq Island in the central part of the Uummannaq Fjord. It entirely dominates the landscape of the island, its base occupying its entire northern half. Formed of granite and basement gneiss, it is the most prominent mountain in the Arctic part of the west coast of Greenland. Sheltered from the coastal winds by the high, glaciated mountains of the Nuussuaq Peninsula, the area of Uummannaq Fjord is considered the sunniest spot in Greenland: Favourable weather conditions, good harbours, and proximity to the coastal route made the fjord system attractive to numerous southbound Inuit migrations in the past-the area has been settled and resettled for the last 4.500 years. Archaeological excavations in Qilakitsoq on the northeastern shore Nuussuaq Peninsula due south of Uummannaq Island revealed the existence of an ancient Arctic culture, later named the Saqqaq culture, which inhabited the area of west-central Greenland between 2500 BCE and 800 BCE
