Tagebuch-Manuskript einer Fahrt des deutschen Dampfers Savona 1936 (Spanischer Bürgerkrieg)].

(1936) 1936 - Manuskript, 17 Seiten, etliche nicht beschriebene Seiten. HLn.-Kladde, 21,5 x 14,5 cm. 602 Gramm.         Robert Musil's Holograph Postcard to Countess Mary Dobrzensky in Pot?tejn (Czechoslovakia)

August 25, 1936 (postmark), Hotel Thalhof (Reichenau, Lower Austria) - Robert Musil (1880-1942) sends his regards to Countess Mary Dobrzensky from Hotel Thalhof where he was often a guest. In May 1936 he suffered a stroke and was moved to recovery with his wife to Reichenau. (It is lovely here, but in the first week of September I must return to Vienna because of work, although I'm still not healthy.) Musil never entirely recovered from this stroke and six years later he died from another attack. Countess Mary Dobrzensky (born Wenckheim; 1889-1970) was a Hungarian origin countess, friend and patron of intellectuals, artist and writers among them Robert Musil, Rainer Maria Rilke, Alfred Polgar, Karel ?apek, Anette Kolb and Karl Krauss. Musil and the Countess were neighbors in Vienna, both lived in the Rasumofskygasse. Front with view of Reichenau with the Raxbahn (black and white). Slightly browned. Otherwise in fine condition.

        Two Typed Letter Signed

1936 and 1937. Two Typed Letter Signed from Margaret Mitchell from 1936 and 1937 sent to Scribner's Magazine editor Katherine Jackson. Folded from being mailed, else fine. Both are written on Mitchell's letterhead and Signed, with the first letter additionally Signed in parentheses: "Mrs. John R. Marsh." The earlier letter is dated October 8, 1936, just three months after the publication of Gone With the Wind. In it Mitchell apologizes for not being able to send Scribner's her best books list because she has been too busy the past year doing research for her book. "Usually I read enormously but during the past year I have read nothing at all except reference books," she explains. "I put in six months on reference books, in order to have four references instead of two for the historical statements in my book. I put in months correcting type script and more months proof reading. Some times I worked twenty hours a day. This was not very good for my eyes and I have been unable to read anything except the largest headlines since last June." The second letter from January 23, 1937 is a note thanking Jackson's for the kind words she wrote about Mitchell in a recent issue of Scribner's: " I delayed because I wanted to write you something more than a brief acknowledgment of my appreciation. But it seems that the time for such a letter will never come for I fell so far behind..." .

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

London: Macmillan & Co., 1936. First edition of the economist's masterpiece. This volume is generally regarded as the most influential social science treatise of the twentieth century. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with some light wear and a small chip to the back of the crown of the spine. The General Theory ranks with Smith's Wealth of Nations as an intellectual event and with Malthus' Essay on Population as a guide for public policy. The London Review of Books has grouped The General Theory "among the glories of modern publishing, edited with exemplary authority and lack of fuss." Many innovations of The General Theory remain central to modern macroeconomics. It was placed on Time's 2001 top one-hundred non-fiction books written in English since 1923.

[Silk Banner]: Sociedad Espanola Benefica de Senoras. San Francisco. Fundada en 1935. Inc. Oct. 9, 1936 [Spanish Ladies Beneficial Society. San Francisco. Founded in 1935. Incorporated. Oct. 9, 1936]

Elaborately embroidered silk banner, bordered in silk ribbon, and fringed, suspended from wooden rod with gold-colored metal finials, apparently meant to be either hung or carried in a parade. Approximately 23" wide x 36" long. Bottom layer of reddish-pink silk, with an overlay of scalloped white silk, embroidered with silver and gold lettering, central images of a star and hands clasping, and outlined in gold with heavy gold silk cord suspended from the rod. The reddish-pink background is slightly sunned but otherwise is near fine, untattered and only very slightly worn. Presumably this elaborate and detailed banner was used in a parade, or was displayed at meetings of the Society. While undated, the style suggests that it is roughly contemporary with the 1936 date of incorporation, and indeed may have been commissioned at that time. While memorabilia promoting people of Spanish decent in America began as early as the late 1860s, this certainly represents a very early attempt among Latina women in the United States to band together and form a beneficial organization. A bright, striking, rare, quite possibly unique banner. .

[Tagebuch-Manuskript einer Fahrt des deutschen Dampfers Savona 1936 (Spanischer Bürgerkrieg)]. -
