Calls, Sounds and Merchandise of the Peking Street Peddlers

Beijing: The Camel Bell [overprinted with: The Peking Bookshop], 25th year of the Republic of China, i.e., 1936. Oblong quarto, printed in Chinese style on double leaves, with 61 coloured lithograph plates and 16 tipped-in photographic illustrations, a paper pattern and a diagram; original silk-covered boards in fine condition; 1947 ownership inscription on front endpaper. Street cries of old Peking. First edition of this delightful study of Beijing street peddlers; a significant resource for the study of a disappeared way of life.As Feng Yi has noted (The sound of images: Peddlers' calls and tunes in Republican Peking, 2008, online resource), Constant's book was the first collection of such images to be published. Constant's work and Qi Rushan's Gudu shiyue tukao (A pictorial study of city music in the ancient capital), also published in 1936, 'are probably the only two such records on peddlers, except for short series of images and notices in Peking's popular newspapers... One can find in the press and in various publications this sense that something had been or was about to be lost in Peking's culture, and that it was time to make a record of it before it became history... The first collection of images on peddlers was published by Victor Samuel Constant. He prepared this work for an M.A. degree at the California College in China and published it in 1935 under the title Calls, sounds and merchandise of the Peking street peddlers. The author states that his work includes the most important and most common peddlers who went around Peking streets. Sixty-five peddlers are presented in the book (4 in photographs), with a description of their calls, characteristic sounds and what they have to sell or offer as service...'. As Constant says of his own work, 'Some call out their wares in a musical voice or song calculated to please the hearer. Others have a loud or discordant cry which grates on the nerves as though the devil himself had something to sell.'The coloured lithographs all take a double form with an image of the peddler accompanied by another depiction of his wares or the devices used to accompany his call. The photographs depict actual peddlers in street performances.

Obelisk Press, Paris 1936 - 8vo, pp. 269. Original illustrated stiff paper wrappers with foldover flaps. Leading and lower edges uncut. Some edgewear to (oversize) wrappers, with some closed tears at join with spine. Original price on front flap [50 francs] cancelled but visible, price of books listed on rear flap cancelled, new price [78 00] stamped to rear endpaper. Other small publisher's stamps to foot of same endpaper. Fourth edition, first Obelisk edition, with the dancing girl design to front panel. Presumed earliest impression, without the wording 'Banned in England May 1935' to front panel usually found on this title. Boy, Hanley's account of a boy running away to sea, was first published by Boriswood in London in 1931, in both a limited unexpurgated issue, and a trade issue in which the more contentious passages were replaced by asterisks or gaps in the text. A second impression and a US edition followed, both bowdlerised. When a cheap, unexpurgated edition appeared in 1934 a Manchester lending library was prosecuted for stocking it, and Boriswood's directors were charged with aiding and abetting. All parties pleaded guilty on legal advice, and the book was banned. After the trial Jack Kahane of the Paris-based, English-language imprint the Obelisk Press, bought the sheets of the 1934 edition and inserted a new title page. The result was this edition, which is dedicated to Nancy Cunard, at one time Kahane's lover. This issue, with the lurid dancing girl cover design, is extremely scarce: Hanley's first bibliographer failed to find this edition, and doubted its existence. This is the presumed first state (see above), which is scarcer still. Pearson A-37 (first state)

(ZŸrich), Bollmann [1936]. - Kl.-4¡. 43 S. Mit zahlreichen teils ganzs. - Laub, 80 (1937).
