        The Equinox of the Gods

London: Issued by the O.T.O.,, 1936. The Official Organ of the A. A. Quarto. Original cream-coloured cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover, untrimmed. 2 colour plates of an Egyptian stele, diagrams and illustrations in the text, facsimile MS. of Crowley's The Book of the Law in pocket at end (in three sections numbered 1-22, 1-22, 1-21). Spine rolled, foxing to top edges, "bloom" of foxing on pp. 132-33. A very good copy, without the errata slip but with the scarce original order form loosely inserted. First edition, first impression, very scarce: Copac lists just 6 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, Warburg Institute, Oxford, National Library of Scotland, National Trust, Wellcome Library), and OCLC adds another dozen copies worldwide. According to OCLC "although issued as volume 3, number 3, of the Equinox (September 1936), this is a separate title by Crowley." Gerald Yorke's bibliography of Crowley, printed in John Symonds's The Great Beast: The Life of Aleister Crowley (1951), describes three variants of the Equinox appearing in 1936: (a) described as a "subscribers' edition", (b) the current version, and (c) with a slip pasted over the date on the title page changing it to 1937. "In 1937 [sic] Crowley issued The Equinox of the Gods, a work containing the text of Liber Legis and a brief history of his magical career, or ascent to the thrones of the Secret Chiefs. Both sides of the stele of Ankh-f-n-Khonsu are reproduced in colour and facsimile sheets of the original MS. of Liber Legis are tucked in a folder at the back of the book... it is a splendid production. On the evening of Christmas Day Crowley, with Brother Volo Intelligere, in the course of an extensive pub-crawl, gathered a Jew, an Indian, a Negro, and a Malayan. They all proceeded to Cleopatra's Needle on the London Embankment, where, at precisely 6.22 a.m., as the Sun entered Capricornus, The Beast pronounced: 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. I, Ankh-f-n-Khonsu, the Priest of the Princes, present you, as representatives of your race, with The Book of the Law. It is the charter of universal freedom for every man and woman in the world. Love is the law, love under will.' He then handed round copies of The Equinox of the Gods and went home to bed with a hangover" (John Symonds, The Great Beast: The Life of Aleister Crowley, p. 293).

        Chaucer A.B.C

Paris: The Obelisk Press,, 1936. Being a hymn to the Holy Virgin in an English version by Geoffrey Chaucer from the French of Guillaume de Deguilleville. Preface by Louis Gillet. Quarto. Original pale blue wrappers, titles to front cover in blue. Housed in the publisher's pale blue and silver chemise and slipcase, with printed paper label to spine. Wrappers a little toned to edges, endleaves lightly foxed, the slipcase slightly torn with some minor spotting. A superb copy. First edition, limited issue. Number 80 of 300 copies printed on Arches mould-made vellum paper. A scarce copy of the alphabet book with illuminated initials by Lucia Joyce (1907-1982). "Joyce arranged without [Lucia's] knowledge to have her lettrines published at his expense in A Chaucer ABC and in his own Pomes Penyeach" (Chester G. Anderson, James Joyce and his world). The design of illuminated letters was one of a number of different paths she pursued at various times, probably in imitation of her father's life as a creative artist: others included singing, dancing and writing. During the 1930s James Joyce consulted with various physicians about her deteriorating mental state, including Carl Jung; she was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia.

        Horror on the Asteroid

London: Philip Allan, 1936., 1936. First edition. 8vo. Bound in publisher's red cloth titled and ruled in black to spine. Minor rubbing and shelfwear, some sunning to extremities. Very good indeed. In a very good, clean example of the extremely scarce dustwrapper, with chipping and loss to spine ends affecting the title and publisher. Minor loss to corners, some soiling and creasing to white rear panel. Perhaps doesn't sound particularly delicious, but it's rarity in any form of dustwrapper makes up somewhat for the wear and tear. One of the highly collectable "Creeps" series.

The general theory of employment interest and money

London, Macmillan and Co., 1936. 8vo., xii + 403 + (1)pp., in the original publisher's cloth lettered gilt. A fine, bright, copy without blemish, but without a dustwrapper. First edition: first issue. One of the iconic books in the development of economic thought by one of the outstanding economists of his generation. 'The composition of this book', Keynes declares, 'has been for the author a long struggle of escape, and so must the reading of it be for most readers if the author's assault upon them is to be successful, - a struggle of escape from habitual modes of thought and expression. The ideas which are here expressed so laboriously are extremely simple and should be obvious. The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones, which ramify, for those brought up as most of us have been, into every corner of our minds.' [Preface,> p. viii].

Campesino, defiende con las armas al gobierno que te dió la tierra

Graficas Valencia, Intervenido U.G.T. - C.N.T. [1936], Valencia - A dramatic poster of impressive scale, produced to celebrate the land reform policies of the Republican government in the months following the fascist rebellion. Renau (1907-1982) was among the most talented and most prolific of the left-wing artists engaged by the Ministerio de Propaganda. Following the Civil War, he was captured and briefly interned in a French concentration camp, but managed to escape to Mexico in 1939. In Mexico he pursued a long and distinguished career as a muralist, painter, and political propagandist. In 1966 Renau relocated to East Germany, where he published his classic Fata Morgana USA: the American Way of Life, a book of photomontaged images highly critical of North American consumer culture. CARULLA 1613 (pictured). Lithographed poster in 4 colors; 153 x 103 cm (ca 60-1/4" x 41"). Archivally backed on linen. Few minor spots of restoration along upper margin; two brief (1") repaired tears; Grade A-.

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

Macmillan and Co, London 1936 - First edition. xii, 403pp. 8vo. From the moment of publication to the current day, it's difficult to overstate the impact Keynes and his General Theory has had on the field of macroeconomics. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade cycle? [h]e subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economists to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM). Controversial and divisive, it was received with enthusiasm by some and dismissed as a recipe for inflation by others. Put briefly, his analysis demonstrated that "[e]conomic policy should [ultimately] provide for the management of demand as a means of controlling the level of output and seek to ensure the fullest possible use of available resources" (ODNB). Keynes's General Theory provides an invaluable critique and thus is a sort of companion volume of the likes of Adam Smith. Indeed, this and The Wealth of Nations should be considered the two pillars of any serious collection of books on economics. PMM 423 Original blue-green publisher's cloth, spine gilt, some light foxing spots to the first few leaves. The printed jacket is unclipped and in very good condition with two small stains at the foot of the front cover of the jacket and another on the bottom corner of the lower panel of the jacket, close to the foreedge. There is a 2 millimeter closed tear at the bottom of the spine of the jacket and a little wrinkling close to the crown [Attributes: First Edition]
