The general theory of employment interest and money

London, Macmillan and Co., 1936. 8vo., xii + 403 + (1)pp., in the original publisher's cloth lettered gilt. A fine, bright, copy without blemish, but without a dustwrapper. First edition: first issue. One of the iconic books in the development of economic thought by one of the outstanding economists of his generation. 'The composition of this book', Keynes declares, 'has been for the author a long struggle of escape, and so must the reading of it be for most readers if the author's assault upon them is to be successful, - a struggle of escape from habitual modes of thought and expression. The ideas which are here expressed so laboriously are extremely simple and should be obvious. The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones, which ramify, for those brought up as most of us have been, into every corner of our minds.' [Preface,> p. viii].

Campesino, defiende con las armas al gobierno que te dió la tierra

Graficas Valencia, Intervenido U.G.T. - C.N.T. [1936], Valencia - A dramatic poster of impressive scale, produced to celebrate the land reform policies of the Republican government in the months following the fascist rebellion. Renau (1907-1982) was among the most talented and most prolific of the left-wing artists engaged by the Ministerio de Propaganda. Following the Civil War, he was captured and briefly interned in a French concentration camp, but managed to escape to Mexico in 1939. In Mexico he pursued a long and distinguished career as a muralist, painter, and political propagandist. In 1966 Renau relocated to East Germany, where he published his classic Fata Morgana USA: the American Way of Life, a book of photomontaged images highly critical of North American consumer culture. CARULLA 1613 (pictured). Lithographed poster in 4 colors; 153 x 103 cm (ca 60-1/4" x 41"). Archivally backed on linen. Few minor spots of restoration along upper margin; two brief (1") repaired tears; Grade A-.

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

Macmillan and Co, London 1936 - First edition. xii, 403pp. 8vo. From the moment of publication to the current day, it's difficult to overstate the impact Keynes and his General Theory has had on the field of macroeconomics. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade cycle? [h]e subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economists to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM). Controversial and divisive, it was received with enthusiasm by some and dismissed as a recipe for inflation by others. Put briefly, his analysis demonstrated that "[e]conomic policy should [ultimately] provide for the management of demand as a means of controlling the level of output and seek to ensure the fullest possible use of available resources" (ODNB). Keynes's General Theory provides an invaluable critique and thus is a sort of companion volume of the likes of Adam Smith. Indeed, this and The Wealth of Nations should be considered the two pillars of any serious collection of books on economics. PMM 423 Original blue-green publisher's cloth, spine gilt, some light foxing spots to the first few leaves. The printed jacket is unclipped and in very good condition with two small stains at the foot of the front cover of the jacket and another on the bottom corner of the lower panel of the jacket, close to the foreedge. There is a 2 millimeter closed tear at the bottom of the spine of the jacket and a little wrinkling close to the crown [Attributes: First Edition]

At the Mountains of Madness [its first publication, serially, in Astounding Stories, February-March-April 1936]

New York: Street & Smith Publications, Inc.. Good+. 1936. (Vol. XVI, No. 6; Vol. XVII, Nos. 1-2). Magazine. [all three issues are dampstained to some extent on the rear covers, with a small amount of effect on the internals; only on the third (April) issue is there any impact on the front cover of the magazine, and the cover that illustrates the Lovecraft story itself (February) is quite clean and presents very well.] The first appearance in print of Lovecraft's classic novella "At the Mountains of Madness," about a disastrous Antarctic expedition, originally written in 1931 but rejected at that time (purportedly on account of its length) by "Weird Tales," which had published his work pretty regularly during the 1920s. The story is considered one of Lovecraft's finest works, and has had a considerable afterlife in numerous media, although a rumored film version to be directed by Guillermo del Toro has yet to come to fruition. (There are of course many other stories in these three issues, by such luminaries as Manly Wade Wellman and Eando Binder -- I'll supply the details upon request, if you really want to know -- but let's face it: they all pale next to Lovecraft.) .

Leipzig: Otto Bayer, 1936. First edition. Softcover. g. Folio. 87, [1]pp. Original color wrappers splendidly illustrated by H. F and Hein Neuner. Published in Germany between 1929 and 1943, Die neue Linie ("The New Line") was an outstanding new lifestyle magazine on art, architecture, and fashion. No other publication of this era was so consistent in bringing avant-garde typographic ideas to a mass audience, as leading graphic designers from the Bauhaus, including László Moholy-Nagy, Umbo and Herbert Bayer, steered the look of the magazine, whose contents combined fashion, literature, graphic design and art. Unembellished fonts, dynamic diagonals and dramatic use of photomontage were key to the journal's striking appearance. Its authors included Walter Gropius, Aldous Huxley, Gottfried Benn and Thomas Mann; even the advertising pages, designed by Bauhaus veterans Herbert Bayer and Kurt Kranz, were always attractively composed. Despite widespread media conformity during the Nazi era, Die Neue Linie was largely spared the regime's sanctions. This exceptional issue is mainly dedicated to the Berlin Olympic Games, and features a lenghty article on the art at the Olympic stadium, and others relative to the historical sportive event. This magazine is superbly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w photographic reproductions as well as color illustrations. Some rubbing and moderate creasing along edges of wrappers. Closed tears at tail of spine. Text in German, with some captions in English and French. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good condition.
