Calls, Sounds and Merchandise of the Peking Street Pedlers.

Peking.: Peking Bookshop.. The Peking Bookshop. [Stamped over The Camel Bell]. 61 colour lithographs, 16 black and white tipped-in plates (1 creased), black and white illustration showing "The Pakua or Eight Diagrams", original paper cut pattern creased and separated at border. Folded leaves, bound in Chinese four hole stab binding covered with patterned silk. Vertical crease first and last three leaves. 19 x 26.5cm. Good copy of a charming and important book. This charming book, based on Constant?'s 1936 MA thesis, offers a wonderful combination of the beautiful and the scholarly. Constant was fascinated by East Asia studying Oriental languages at Columbia University. In 1923, in his late 20s, and by then a captain in the U.S. Army Constant was posted to Beijing as an Assistant Military Attaché of the American Legation. The following year he went to the front line of the Zhi-Feng War as an observer. A year later took part in the rescue effort of Harvey James Howard, an American doctor who was kidnapped by bandits in Northeast China. Constant?'s interest in things Chinese grew throughout his life. While working for the American Legation, he also attended the College of Chinese Studies (known as California College in China in the U.S.A.). His thesis ran to 103 pages and was illustrated with colour illustrations and photographs. Fortunately The Camel Bell Press saw that there might be a market for such a work and in 1936, the same year Constant was awarded his MA, published this enlarged edition. This important work offers a rare picture of a now vanished world. (Li Guoqing 2012) .

Crusader Castles. Complete in two volumes comprising The Thesis and The Letters. With forewords by A.W.Lawrence and Mrs [Sarah] Lawrence.

The Golden Cockerel Press, London, 1936. The first publication of Lawrence's Oxford thesis (originally entitled 'The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture to the end of the Twelfth Century'). Limited to 1,000 numbered copies (this being #397) printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff into half morocco, gilt lettered at spines with five raised bands to each and cream cloth sides. 4to. Top edges gilt, other untrimmed. With over 150 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, and two four-panel folding maps (one lightly stained with two small enclosed areas of loss and some surface abrasion) housed in a separate envelope at the rear, as issued. Cloth sides a little grubby, stained and lifting at one edge. Endpapers and pastedowns marked and a little discoloured with two small areas of rust marking to the endpaper of the first volume, presumably where something was once stored. A slightly handed set, but internally in superb state. "A first typewritten text of the thesis served as a draft for a corrected version, also typewritten, which was bound with numbered illustrations and submitted to the examiners. The author then began to revise the rough copy again in pencil, apparently with a view to publication, altering the wording and writing comments in the margins. The title 'Crusader Castles' appears only in this version. After the examination (in which he was placed in the First Class), one of the judges of the thesis urged the University Press to publish it in book form, saying however that not one of the illustrations could be spared; the cost was considered prohibitive." - from A.W.Lawrence's foreword. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

        Gone With the Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936. First edition of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by Margaret Mitchell on the front free end paper. First printing, with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. First issue dust jacket, with Gone with the Wind listed in the second column of the booklist on the back panel, with $3.00 cost on the front flap. Near fine in the orignal dust jacket with some professional restoration to the extremities. A very nice example. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents ... it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. ... " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.

        Bread and Wine.

London: Methuen and co., 1936. - First English Edition. Octavo. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, with titles in red to front board and spine. Pictorial dust wrapper displays a mass of waiting peasants thronging the city streets, whether in revolt or in celebration is unclear, with review excepts for the author's first novel "Fontamara" to rear cover; unprice-clipped, originally priced at 7s 6d. Binding is tight, bumped to corners and spine ends. The dust wrapper remains vibrant, rubbed to edges and spine ends. Silone was a socialist author, who was a covert head of the Italian Communist Party during the fascist period. This anti-fascist novel was distributed, in an unauthorized edition, by the US military forces during the liberation of Italy, and it weaves a complex narrative of a young revolutionary struggling to mobilize the peasantry with that of an aspirant nun. This is renowned shipowner's account of the day-to-day events and operations of the whaling vessel, illustrated by photographs and with diagrams and map. - Laub, 80 (1937).         Two Boys go Sailing. Illustrated by Brigid Ganly.

J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd.,, London, 1936 - First Edition. London, J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd., 1936. 8°. Frontispiece - Illustration, VIII, 246 pages with a (partly fictitious) map of Roaringwater Bay on the pastedown and endpaper and 12 illustrations throughout the book. Original, illustrated Hardcover with the rare, illustrated dustjacket. Unusually excellent, close to new condition of this scarce book with only minor signs of external wear to the binding. The dustjacket with a small repair. This is one of the rarest publications on West Cork, Baltimore and Roaringwater Bay. Edward Conor Marshall O'Brien (3 November 1880 – 18 April 1952) was an intellectual, Irish aristocrat, republican, nationalist, pioneer in modern maritime theory, owner and captain of one of the first boats to sail under the tri-colour of the Irish Free State, during his circumnavigation in the Saoirse. He was a grandson of the Fenian William Smith O'Brien. Reputedly this was the first small boat to sail around Cape Horn. This is slightly unfair to Joshua Slocum, the Bostonian, who was the first single-handed yachtsman to successfully pass this way (in 1895) although in the end, extreme weather forced him to use some of the inshore routes between the channels and islands and it is believed he may not have actually passed outside the Horn proper. Given the scale of Slocum's achievement it might be considered unfair to deprive him of the honour! Although it was nearly 30 years later, a strict definition of "the first small boat to sail around outside Cape Horn" could indeed cover the 42-foot (13 m) yacht Saoirse, sailed by Conor O'Brien with three hands, who rounded it during a circumnavigation of the world between 1923 and 1925 It was the first boat flying the Irish tri-colour to enter many of the world's ports and harbours. He was a ship builder/designer (notable boats include the Saoirse and AK Ilen ), gun runner for the Irish Volunteers during the war of independence in Ireland, captain of a ship sailing in the merchant navy during WWII.       London Victor Gollancz Ltd 1936 - First edition, 8vo., publisher's blue cloth, gilt title to spine, still bright, printed cream dust-jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled with age-discolouration particularly to spine but overall sound and presentable. Sir Alfred Jules 'Freddie' Ayer 1910-1989, British philosopher known for his promotion of Logical Positivism, as newly developed by the Vienna Circle, particularly in this book and a subsequent one 20 years later, The Problem of Knowledge. In the former, Ayer presents the verification principle as the only valid basis for philosophy. He believed that unless logical or empirical verification is possible then statements such as 'God exists' or 'charity is good' are not true or untrue but meaningless. Needless to say such views made Ayer at age of 26 the 'enfant terrible' of British philosophy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Macmillan, 1936 First edition, second printing (June 1936). Inscribed by Mitchell in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "Margaret Mitchell / Atlanta, Ga / August 8, 1936". Publisher's gray cloth, lettered in teal; in the original first issue pictorial dust jacket. Book near fine, with some light wear and toning to the spine ends, sturdy spine, bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with repairs to the spine and folds, light toning to the spine, loss to the spine head, bright panels. Overall, a tight and fresh copy, inscribed by Mitchell three months after publication. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with matching chemise. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perhaps best described as a work of historical fiction, Gone with the Wind also has many of the trappings of a traditional bildungsroman and romance novel, although critics argue that it does not fully fall under the category of either genre. The novel tells of archetypal Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara as she grows from a young woman into maturity against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Like many of the early 20th century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South. While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. Also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
