- Laub, 80 (1937).         Two Boys go Sailing. Illustrated by Brigid Ganly.

J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd.,, London, 1936 - First Edition. London, J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd., 1936. 8°. Frontispiece - Illustration, VIII, 246 pages with a (partly fictitious) map of Roaringwater Bay on the pastedown and endpaper and 12 illustrations throughout the book. Original, illustrated Hardcover with the rare, illustrated dustjacket. Unusually excellent, close to new condition of this scarce book with only minor signs of external wear to the binding. The dustjacket with a small repair. This is one of the rarest publications on West Cork, Baltimore and Roaringwater Bay. Edward Conor Marshall O'Brien (3 November 1880 – 18 April 1952) was an intellectual, Irish aristocrat, republican, nationalist, pioneer in modern maritime theory, owner and captain of one of the first boats to sail under the tri-colour of the Irish Free State, during his circumnavigation in the Saoirse. He was a grandson of the Fenian William Smith O'Brien. Reputedly this was the first small boat to sail around Cape Horn. This is slightly unfair to Joshua Slocum, the Bostonian, who was the first single-handed yachtsman to successfully pass this way (in 1895) although in the end, extreme weather forced him to use some of the inshore routes between the channels and islands and it is believed he may not have actually passed outside the Horn proper. Given the scale of Slocum's achievement it might be considered unfair to deprive him of the honour! Although it was nearly 30 years later, a strict definition of "the first small boat to sail around outside Cape Horn" could indeed cover the 42-foot (13 m) yacht Saoirse, sailed by Conor O'Brien with three hands, who rounded it during a circumnavigation of the world between 1923 and 1925 It was the first boat flying the Irish tri-colour to enter many of the world's ports and harbours. He was a ship builder/designer (notable boats include the Saoirse and AK Ilen ), gun runner for the Irish Volunteers during the war of independence in Ireland, captain of a ship sailing in the merchant navy during WWII.         Language Truth & Logic.

London Victor Gollancz Ltd 1936 - First edition, 8vo., publisher's blue cloth, gilt title to spine, still bright, printed cream dust-jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled with age-discolouration particularly to spine but overall sound and presentable. Sir Alfred Jules 'Freddie' Ayer 1910-1989, British philosopher known for his promotion of Logical Positivism, as newly developed by the Vienna Circle, particularly in this book and a subsequent one 20 years later, The Problem of Knowledge. In the former, Ayer presents the verification principle as the only valid basis for philosophy. He believed that unless logical or empirical verification is possible then statements such as 'God exists' or 'charity is good' are not true or untrue but meaningless. Needless to say such views made Ayer at age of 26 the 'enfant terrible' of British philosophy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Crusader Castles. Complete in two volumes comprising The Thesis and The Letters. With forewords by A.W.Lawrence and Mrs [Sarah] Lawrence.

The Golden Cockerel Press, London, 1936. The first publication of Lawrence's Oxford thesis (originally entitled 'The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture to the end of the Twelfth Century'). Limited to 1,000 numbered copies (this being #397) printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff into half morocco, gilt lettered at spines with five raised bands to each and cream cloth sides. 4to. Top edges gilt, other untrimmed. With over 150 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, and two four-panel folding maps (one lightly stained with two small enclosed areas of loss and some surface abrasion) housed in a separate envelope at the rear, as issued. Cloth sides a little grubby, stained and lifting at one edge. Endpapers and pastedowns marked and a little discoloured with two small areas of rust marking to the endpaper of the first volume, presumably where something was once stored. A slightly handed set, but internally in superb state. "A first typewritten text of the thesis served as a draft for a corrected version, also typewritten, which was bound with numbered illustrations and submitted to the examiners. The author then began to revise the rough copy again in pencil, apparently with a view to publication, altering the wording and writing comments in the margins. The title 'Crusader Castles' appears only in this version. After the examination (in which he was placed in the First Class), one of the judges of the thesis urged the University Press to publish it in book form, saying however that not one of the illustrations could be spared; the cost was considered prohibitive." - from A.W.Lawrence's foreword. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

        Gone With the Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936 First edition, second printing (June 1936). Inscribed by Mitchell in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "Margaret Mitchell / Atlanta, Ga / August 8, 1936". Publisher's gray cloth, lettered in teal; in the original first issue pictorial dust jacket. Book near fine, with some light wear and toning to the spine ends, sturdy spine, bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with repairs to the spine and folds, light toning to the spine, loss to the spine head, bright panels. Overall, a tight and fresh copy, inscribed by Mitchell three months after publication. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with matching chemise. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perhaps best described as a work of historical fiction, Gone with the Wind also has many of the trappings of a traditional bildungsroman and romance novel, although critics argue that it does not fully fall under the category of either genre. The novel tells of archetypal Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara as she grows from a young woman into maturity against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Like many of the early 20th century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South. While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. Also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

VALKA S MLOKY [WAR WITH THE NEWTS]

Praha: Nakladatel Fr. Borovy,. 1936. preliminaries printed in orange and black, original gray cloth, front panel stamped in brown and back, spine panel stamped in black.. 7 mm closed tear in cloth at upper spine end, a bright, nearly fine. copy. (#149801). First edition. Capek's last novel, published in English in 1937 as WAR WITH THE NEWTS. "WAR WITH THE NEWTS is Capek's greatest work in the utopian genre. Closer to Swift than to Wells, it has a satirical tone absent in R.U.R., and is far less melodramatic. Like the earlier FACTORY FOR THE ABSOLUTE, the novel is a roman feuilleton, and it too appeared serially in LIDOVE NOVINY. The loose form of the roman feuilleton allowed Capek great freedom for satire and parody. The novel is a brilliant pastiche of the most diverse kinds of writing: newspaper articles, memoirs, scholarly works, manifestoes, etc. Every conceivable typographic device is employed for comic or satiric effect; there is even an obscure historical note printed in the older Czech type (svabach), as well as an extremely blurred and tiny photograph of the giant newts." - Harkins, Karel Capek, p. 95. "This novel is basically an elaboration of the theme of R.U.R. (1920). The newts are an alien species liberated from their subterranean home by an accident. They begin to learn human ways, and learn them all too well. Eventually they replace their models, providing in the meantime a particularly sharp caricature of human habits and politics. Slightly long- winded, but remains the most effective of Capek's works." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 2-17. Aldiss and Wingrove, Trillion Year Spree, p. 179. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-10; (1981) 2-14; (1987) 2- 16; and (2004) II- 215. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 71. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 191.         Story of Fedinand, The

1936. first edition. The Story of the Young Bull who Preferred Smelling Flowers to FightingLEAF, Munro. The Story of Fedinand. Illustrated by Robert Lawson. New York: The Viking Press, 1936.First edition, first issue with "First Published September 1936" on verso of title-page. Small quarto ( 8 1/8 x 7 inches; 207 x 178 mm.). [71], [1, blank] pp.Original quarter gray cloth over pink paper boards, with white floral pattern and Ferdinand the Bull in black in center. Spine lettered in red, yellow pictorial endpapers. The two top corners very slightly bumped, otherwise near fine. Original pink paper pictorial dust jacket with similar floral pattern with large Ferdinand on front panel and small Ferdinand on rear panel. Spine faded, inner flap price clipped, a few short tears to extremities. Overall a very good copy in the original (price-clipped) dust jacket. The Story of Ferdinand (1936) is the best known work written by American author Munro Leaf (1905-1976) and illustrated by Robert Lawson (1892-1957). This wonderful children's book tells the story of the Young Ferdinand who does not enjoy butting heads with other young bulls, but prefers instead to lie under a tree smelling the flowers. His mother worries that he might be lonely and tries to persuade him to play with the other calves, but when she sees that Ferdinand is content as he is, she leaves him alone. When the calves grow up, Ferdinand turns out to be the largest and strongest of the young bulls. All the other bulls dream of being chosen to compete in the bull fight in Madrid, but Ferdinand still prefers smelling the flowers to fighting. Five men come to the pasture to choose a bull for the fights. Ferdinand is again on his own, sniffing flowers, when he accidentally sits on a bee. He runs wildly across the field, snorting and stamping. Mistaking Ferdinand for a mad bull, the men rename him Ferdinand the Fierce and take him away to Madrid. All the beautiful ladies of Madrid turn out to see the handsome matador fight Ferdinand the Fierce. However, when Ferdinand is led into the ring, he is delighted by the flowers in the ladies' hair and lies down in the middle of the ring to enjoy them, upsetting and disappointing everyone. Ferdinand is sent back to his pasture, where to this day, he is still smelling flowers. The book was released nine months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and was seen by many supporters of Francisco Franco as a pacifist book. It was banned in many countries, including in Spain. In Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler ordered the book burned, while Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, granted it privileged status as the only non-communist children's book allowed in Poland. India's leader Mahatma Gandhi called it his favorite book. Leaf is said to have written the story on a whim in an afternoon in 1935, largely to provide his friend, illustrator Robert Lawson (then relatively unknown) a forum in which to showcase his talents. The landscape in which Lawson placed the fictional Ferdinand is more or less real. Lawson faithfully reproduced the view of the city of Ronda in Andalusia for his illustration of Ferdinand being brought to Madrid on a cart: we see the Puente Nuevo ("New Bridge") spanning the El Tajo canyon. The Disney movie added some rather accurate views of Ronda and the Puente Romano ("Roman bridge") and the Puente Viejo ("Old bridge") at the beginning of the story, where Lawson's pictures were more free. Ronda is home to the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain that is still used; this might have been a reason for Lawson's use of its surroundings as a background for the story.

Two Autograph letters, signed ("Felix" & "FF"), and one Typed Letter, signed ("FF"), to various recipients. [With:] Autograph Letter, signed ("Tom") from Thomas G. Corcoran to his father, forwarding these three Frankfurter letters

Cambridge, Mass, 1936. On Harvard Law School and personal letterhead. Various sizes. In red morocco-backed clam shell box. On Harvard Law School and personal letterhead. Various sizes. "... if ever there was an organic being, it was Holmes". Collection of letters praising an address delivered by Thomas G. Corcoran in April 1936 before the Harvard Law School Association on the topic of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Corcoran was a former student of Frankfurter's at Harvard and had clerked for Justice Holmes in the 1920s. Frankfurter writes to congratulate and praise Corcoran, " ... The School is humming with your achievement: both faculty and students had their horizons stretched and their souls invigorated. It was a moral and esthetic triumph. I cannot adequately tell you the pride I feel in you." In a letter to Benjamin Cohen, another former student, Frankfurter implores him to have Corcoran dictate his speech before it is lost, "The place has been buzzing about it ever since, both Faculty and Students. It was an extraordinary psychological analysis of the workshop of Holmes' mind, and, of course, a penetrating interpretation of the whole man. For if ever there was an organic being, it was Holmes. And the thing had beauty and loveliness. In conception and execution it was a truly beautiful performance. It can't be recaptured. But I am appealing to you to have Tom rescue as much as can be rescued ... please do make Tom dictate just for one straight hour all that he can remember ..." Frankfurter writes to Harold Laski, an English political scientist who had taught at Harvard, "Just to tell you that not since Holmes spoke here, at 250th has anyone so moved Faculty & students as did Tom at Law Review Dinner ..." With an autograph noted from Corcoran to his father, forwarding the Frankfurter notes, "... I don't quite remember what I said. I talked without notes - but it seemed to go over well. Here are three letters - to Ben, to Harold Laski and to me from FF. A prejudiced judge - but you may enjoy reading them ...".

The fifth book of the Europa Poets series published by George Reavey, an Irish surrealist poet and publisher who was Samuel Beckett's first literary agent. His mother was Russian and through translation and positive criticism, he helped to bring Russian poetry to the English-speaking world. He is also noted for publishing the first English translations of the important French surrealist poet Paul Eluard. He went to Paris in 1929 with the intention of gaining entray to the avant garde artistic circles there becoming friends with several Irish writers there - Beckett, James Joyce, Brian Coffey and Denis Devlin. Reavey soon began his literary agency in Paris and his Europa Press imprint, this being its fifth publication. From the beginning Reavey was closely allied with the studio Atelier 17, founded by Hayter in which Max Ernst, who provided the wrapper illustration for Thorns of Thunder, and John Buckland Wright worked. This copy was given by Reavey to his great friend, the artist John Buckland Wright of Atelier 17.         Lawrence of Arabia

Corvinus Press, 1936. Binder's copy. One of 128 numbered copies, this one unnumbered and possibly one of the 3 or an extra for the exclusive use of the printer. Set in 18 pt Centaur type with Arrigihi Italic and printed on a hand press, on hand made paper watermarks 'Hand Made' and "FJ Head' which was a watermark used by Barcham Green after they took over FJ Head papermerchants. 4to., bound by Sangorski in original half linen with hand made paper covered boards, gilt borders. Boards bit darkened, a couple of areas of rubbing and bumped at corners. Printing of two speeches about Lawrence made at lunch given in his memory a month after his death: The Artist in War and Lettersby Liddell Hart and Himself by Storrs.
