        Gone With the Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936 First edition, first printing (May 1936). Signed by Mitchell on the front free endpaper. Publisher's gray cloth, lettered in teal. Near finer or better, with light toning to the spine, some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, a few faint hints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh boards, sturdy binding and fresh interior. A very clean and fresh copy, signed by Mitchell. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perhaps best described as a work of historical fiction, Gone with the Wind also has many of the trappings of a traditional bildungsroman and romance novel, although critics argue that it does not fully fall under the category of either genre. The novel tells of archetypal Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara as she grows from a young woman into maturity against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Like many of the early 20th century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South. While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. Also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        Birds Of The West Indies.

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philaelphia: Printed at the Waverley Press, Baltimore January 1936. - FIRST EDITION. Pp.456. Publisher's gilt stamped green buckram with 'small' imprint lettering blocked to spine. With sepia map of the islands, colour frontispiece, and many illustrations throughout. Internally fine; discreet name to back of map, binding shows some acceptable use, sunned to extreme top edge, gilt bright; a very good copy indeed. This is one of two known bindings (priority unknown); the other is in true grey-green cloth with large' imprint lettering, as well as the word 'of' being stamped to the spine in a large font. Source; The Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive. IAN FLEMING took the name for his infamous hero from the ornithologist James Bond. Fleming was looking for a most plain, unsophisticated name for the character who became synonymous for flamboyance and style. Fleming had a copy of the 1947 re-issue, and instantly decided upon the name after seeing this. This true first printing is scarce. Lycett: Life of Ian Fleming. Bryce: You Only Live Once.         Autograph Letter Signed

1936 - on Forty-Nine Overstrand Mansions, Prince of Wales Road letterhead [London] October 1, 1936. 4to. 2 pages (recto and verso). To producer Robert Sisk: "I am really glad to read that Barry Fitzgerald has given a superb performance of 'Fluther' I guessed he would. I did all I could to get British International Pictures to use him as 'Capt Boyle' when they did 'Juno' but they wouldn't even listen to me. Bloody fools! I am glad to hear that you are thinking of re-doing 'Juno,' though, strictly speaking (from the point of view of production) it has never been done. I'm sure the production of 'The Plough' was no easy task to do, for I hope anything I may write will have guts & go in it. And, anyhow, no film worth a damn can be an easy thing to do. I will co-operate in every possible way with RKO in any business deal over the production of 'Juno,' & I have already said so to your European Representative who visited me here a day or so ago. But I have to say that my American agent, Richard Madden, of The Richard Madden Play Co., has been very good with my work, & the deal must be done technically through him. But I'm sure there will be no trouble over an agreement" [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1936 - ["another unprocurable"] London: J. M. Dent & Sons, (1936). Original grey boards, with dust jacket. First Edition of Thomas's second book, which consisted of only 730 copies. His only earlier book had been EIGHTEEN POEMS, a 1934 issue of 250 copies by the Sunday Referee & Parton Bookshop.~After the variously toned but never indifferent reception accorded to EIGHTEEN POEMS, Thomas's name began to appear regularly in a number of literary journals. But Victor Neuberg [poetry editor of the Sunday Referee] felt that the opportunities provided by that book and the auguries of 'promise' which it had elicited from the critics should not be left too long in mid air, and early in 1936 he suggested that Thomas might collect together what poems he had written over the past year with a view to preparing a second book. Within a few days Thomas handed him a sheaf of twenty-one poems. Neuberg, having read and been impressed by them, advised making up the number to a round twenty-five. The additional four were quickly supplied. [Rolph]~Both books (EIGHTEEN and TWENTY-FIVE) were chosen by Cyril Connolly to constitute one of the 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement: "These first poems (very uneven) shattered for those who discovered them the whole revolutionary optimism of the Thirties." (Connolly labels TWENTY-FIVE POEMS "another unprocurable".)~This is a fine copy of this fragile book (one small spot on the rear board); included is the grey printed dust jacket in near-fine condition (the same rear-panel spot; a tiny bit of wear at the corners; the front turn-in is price-clipped, but since the book carries the small label of a Johannesburg bookseller founded in 1927, this clipping may have been done prior to export).         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1936 - 1936 Wisden - Original Hardback - Presentation Copy.

1936. Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate. Please see the large pictures, taken with and without the flash. More available on request. Buy-it-now.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, Limited,, 1936. With a Foreword by Hugh Ruttledge. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in light blue. With the dust jacket. Photographic frontispiece with captioned tissue-guard and 26 similar plates; vignette half-title, illustrated endpapers and frequent drawings to the text by Bip Pares. Upper outer corner of front board bumped, light foxing to edges, the faintest of spotting to front matter, else internally clean and fresh with bright plates. A superb copy in the slightly rubbed dust jacket with a toned and slightly frayed spine and very mild spotting to the rear panel and flaps. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the title-page, "Eric Shipton, 21st November 1938". "One of the greatest pieces of mountain exploration" (Neate). Shipton had successfully participated in Francis Sydney Smythe's expedition to Kamet in 1931 and the Mount Everest expedition in 1933, though "the experience of those two lavishly organized undertakings convinced him that this was the wrong way to travel in the Himalayas and his next venture was in stark contrast. In company with Tilman and three Sherpas he spent three months in Garhwal Himalaya living largely off the country and at a total cost of £286. Instead of travelling as sahibs and retainers they went as companions, sharing the same food and privations. In this remarkable journey they forced an entry, for the first time, up the formidable Rishi gorge and into the Nanda Devi sanctuary which, with its satellite peaks, they surveyed" (ODNB).

The Macmillan Company, 1936. - First edition. 8vo. Laid-in to this copy is a 1943 TLS from Wellman to a newspaper editor in which he discusses his intentions for the book. "I wote that book virtually standing in the tracks of Massai . My best hope for it is that it is a true portrayal of the thinking and living of a real Apache of the old days." Fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket with light wear to spine ends and to the extremities. The story of an Apache warrior under Geronimo, named Massai is being relocated to a prison in Florida. He escapes from the prison train somewhere in Missouri and makes his way back to Arizona, where he is betrayed by one of his people, recaptured and sent off to the Florida prison, where he kills his guards and escapes into the Sierras. This was portrayed very well in 1945 in a film directed by Robert Aldrich, and starred Burt Lancaster and Jean Peters with Charles Bronson and John McIntire also in the cast. Charles Bronson plays a featured role [also an Apache] under his given name Buchinsky. An exceptional and lovely copy of an important book that provides a biographical insight into a champion of his people, yet the story had to be presented as a novel because the author had to fill in a lot of gaps.
