A symbolic analysis of relay and switching circuits.New York: American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1938. First edition.

First edition. Claude Shannon's paper, described in a note on p. 713 as "an abstract of a thesis presented at MIT for the degree of Master of Science," has been frequently called the most important master's thesis of the twentieth century with respect to the influence it had on the development of the electronic and computer industries. Shannon obtained B.S. degrees in mathematics and engineering in 1936 from the University of Michigan, and later that year became a graduate student and research assistant at MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering, where he began working toward an advanced degree. As an undergraduate Shannon had studied symbolic logic and Boolean algebra, and while working with the Bush differential analyzer at MIT became interested in the machine's complex relay circuit that controlled the machine's operation. Recognizing that Boolean algebra was "the appropriate mathematics for studying such two-valued systems," Shannon "developed these ideas during the summer of 1937, which he spent at Bell Laboratories in New York City, and, back at MIT, in his master's thesis, where he showed how Boolean algebra could be used in the analysis and synthesis of switching and computer circuits. The thesis, his first published paper, aroused considerable interest when it appeared in 1938 . . . In 1940 it was awarded the Alfred Noble Prize of the combined engineering societies of the United States" (Shannon, pp. xi-xii). Shannon submitted this thesis in 1937 at the age of 21, only one year after Turing published On Computable Numbers.

In his thesis Shannon recognized that the true/false values in Boole's two-valued logic were analogous to the open and closed states of electrical circuits. From this it followed that Boolean algebra could be used to describe or to design electrical circuits. Boolean algebra, invented by George Boole in his Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847) and The Laws of Thought (1854), makes it possible to devise a procedure or build a device, the state of which can store specific information. Once Shannon showed that electrical circuitry can perform logical and mathematical operations, and can also store the result of these operations, the inference could be drawn that it was possible to design calculating machines using electrical switches. When Shannon wrote his thesis he was thinking of electro-mechanical relays used as switches in telephone technology rather than vacuum tubes, though the same principles apply to both technologies.

We know of no individual journal issue or original separate offprint of Shannon's paper. The IEEE website shows digitized versions of monthly issues for certain other years, but not 1938 for which year only the complete volume is digitized, conforming to our copy. Although it was unusual at this time for a journal publisher to issue a volume in this original clothbound form, it is very possible that for the year 1938 the publishers only supplied an annual volume rather than monthly issues.. 4to (288 x 223 mm), pp. 713-23 in Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers 57 (1938). Whole volume, 4to, pp. [iv], 806. Original dark blue publisher's cloth, some very light discoloration to cloth, 'General Electric Co., Salt Lake City' hand-written on top edge of text block, a very good copy in it's original state. DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK

Little, Brown, and Company, 1936., 1936. First edition. 8vo. Very fine in dust jacket. A brilliant and exceptional copy of a classic novel. This is the story of the forgotten pioneers of the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War. Here Gilbert Martin and his young wife struggled and lived and hoped. Combating hardships almost too great to endure, they helped give to America a legend that still stirs the heart. In the midst of love and hate, life and death, danger and disaster, they stuck to the acres that were theirs and fought a war without ever quite understanding it.

THE HORROR ON THE ASTEROID AND OTHER TALES OF PLANETARY HORROR.

London: Philip Allan, 1936 - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-256, original green cloth, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. One of three variant bindings, priority, if any, not known. Signed inscription by Hamilton on the front free endpaper to Dirce Archer. The author's first book, preceded by a mimeographed booklet printing a short story. One of the earliest single author pulp SF story collections, collecting fiction from WEIRD TALES and SF specialty pulps of the late 1920s and early 1930s. This was also one of the titles in the publisher's Creeps series -- and an interesting sign of how "science fiction" and "horror" had not yet bifurcated into separate genres. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 2-38; (1987) 2-41; (1995) 2-50; and (2004) II-487. Bleiler, Science- Fiction: The Early Years 999 ("Monster-God of Mamurth"). Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, pp. 103-04. Survey of Science Fiction Literature IV, pp. 1939- 43. Bleiler (1978), p. 92. Reginald 06702. A couple of mild spots to cloth, text paper a bit tanned, a very good copy. The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1936. Octavo. Original pebble-grain blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, two line border to head and foot of covers in blind. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper and lines of verse to rear, both in pencil. Corners and fore edge of front board lightly bumped, spine gently faded, a few very small marks to front board and faint stipple of dents to centre of rear. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade-cycle … in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economics to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM). His conclusion, namely that "the regulation of the trade-cycle - that is to say the control of booms and slumps, the level of employment, the wage-scale and the flow of investment - must be the responsibility of governments", permanently altered the terms of economic debate and considerations of the role of government in managing the economy (or not).

CRIMES, CREEPS AND THRILLS: FORTY-FIVE NEW STORIES OF DETECTION, HORROR AND ADVENTURE BY EMINENT MODERN AUTHORS .

London: E. H. Samuel, n.d. [1936] - Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-ix [x] xi-xv [xvi] 1-560, 30 full-page unattributed black and white illustrations in the text, original blue-gray cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. Important 560-page partially original anthology collecting forty-five adventure, crime and supernatural stories by E. H. Visiak, Richard Middleton, M. P. Shiel, H. H. Ewers, Frederick Carter, Edgar Jepson, Nugent Barker, and others. Contents include the only appearance in print of Visiak's "The Shadow," a flawed novel "reworking on a symbolic level of concepts in Captain Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP" [Bleiler (1983)]. "Over and above their general high quality . [Gawsworth's] large anthologies of horror and supernatural Fiction -- ranging from quality ghost stories to mediocre contes cruels -- are notable for the amount of original material they contain, much of this coming from authors of considerable interest, including Oswell Blakeston, Thomas Burke, Frederick Carter, Louis Golding, Edgar Jepson, Arthur Machen, Richard Middleton, Eimar O'Duffy, M. P. Shiel and E. H. Visiak -- as well as Gawsworth himself, none of whose short stories have been collected separately. His early stories, like ABOVE THE RIVER (1931) and 'Scylla and Charybdis' (1934) are wistful nature fantasies in the style of Algernon Blackwood, but his later 'collaborations' with Shiel, Visiak and particularly Jepson ('The Shifting Growth' 1936, included in this collection) are more sinister and portentous, shadowing death." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 392. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 452. Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, p. 392. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 6. Bleiler (1978), p. 80. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Mild patchy fading to cloth, faint foxing to free endpapers, a very good copy in good pictorial 2/6 dust jacket with closed tears and shallow chipping at edges. A scarce book seldom found in jacket. Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1936. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung. This issue has the photomontage showing a hand holding a head which protrudes from a giant jar of mustard on which there is a label reading "Dr. Goebbels Heilsenf," Dr. Goebbels' healing mustard. This relates to the Nazi ban on a quack named Weissenberg. In fine condition. David Evans, John Heartfield AIZ pp. 298-299.
