        What Vermont Means to N.Y.: Three Views.Norman Thomas - C. Hathaway . . .

New York: Vermont Federation of Labor. 1936 - Lithograph poster. 21.5 x 14.25 inches. Losses to lower margin and upper corners. Mounted on linen. Announcing a three-part lecture delivered by Socialist Norman Thomas, C. Hathaway, and John C. Lawson, President of the Vermont Federation of Labor, held on Friday, March 27, 1936. The lectures and this poster were in response to the Procter Marble Company's attempt to evict striking marble workers and their families from company housing. The illustration here, "drawn in a big hurry--it had to be," shows a woman and her four children, including a babe in arms, looking back at their retreated footsteps leading to a pile of abandoned furniture, including a bed, table, armoir, and chairs. Below the group of figures Kent has written "In the Name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress."

        The General.

London: Michael Joseph Ltd.,, 1936. Octavo. Original red-brown red cloth, titles to spine in silver, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket. An exceptional copy in the bright dust jacket very slightly rubbed along extremities, the spine toned and lightly marked with a hint of fraying to foot, the rear panel faintly dust-soiled with a couple of very short nicks to bottom edge. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to "Michael Joseph. Not the onlie begetter but nearly so. from C. S. Forester" on the title-page. A superb association copy, most recently in the collection of military historian and journalist Max Hastings, and mentioned in his introduction to the new edition published by HarperCollins in 2015. As renewed conflict with Germany became increasingly likely, the strategic failures of the British high command during the Great War were being dissected with increasing fervour, notably in the writings of Liddell Hart, whose "denunciations of 1914-18 commanders' myopia, and assertions of their culpability, won favour with some important people, including Lloyd George, Winston Churchill - and C. S. Forester. The strategic guru's vision pervades the novelist's tale about an officer who rises to high rank in the First World War. Forester was encouraged to write it by Michael Joseph, a flamboyant and gifted publisher. Joseph Â… had served on the Western Front as an officer in the Machine-Gun Corps Â… In 1936 he had just started his own publishing house, which thereafter midwifed all Forester's work" (Hastings). The 1930s were a difficult decade for London publishers, with many established houses experiencing financial difficulties or closing down. The success of The General was important in ensuring the viability of Joseph's new venture.

        The Rock Pool.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1936. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine and front board in brown on blue ground, blue illustrated endpapers. With a supplied dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue morocco box. Spine rolled and browned, spine ends and tips lightly worn, occasional light marks to contents; jacket with toned spine, minor loss to head of spine, and foot of front panel, and some shallow chips to extremities. A very good copy. First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by Connelly on the front free endpaper to Anne Bakewell Rogers: "Annie, with all love from Cyril. This is the very rare US edition which I believe only sold 350 copies - I remember I wouldn't have my photograph on the jacket and they were very cross. They seem to have used the same type and misprints as the Paris edition - but nice endpapers. CC. Thirty years later - March 1963." With Rogers's ownership signature to the front pastedown. Anne was the older sister of Connolly's former wife Jean, née Jean Bakewell. The girls were born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Baltimore; when Jean died in 1950, it was Anne who informed Connolly of her death. Connolly was a frequent visitor at La Consula, the home of Anne and her husband Bill on the Costa del Sol, and had assisted them in their search to buy a house there. An unpublished archive of 51 letters from Connolly to the couple are held at the University of Tulsa. The Rock Pool was first published earlier the same year in Paris.

The Romances of Blanche La Mare

Np, Paris [1936] - Octavo. 178p. six very graphic sexual scenes by the erotic artist, Jack Craig. Most copies that have survived have only four of the six images. This work purports to be published in Paris but it is likely that it was printed underground in New York. Even though copies were found in Paris by GI's at the end of World War II, Harry Sidney Nichols was an an antiquarian bookseller who printed high-end erotica for the elite of London. He had formed the Erotika Biblion Society in London but under threat of arrest fled to Paris but when threatened with extradition, he immigrated to New York. He was committed to Bellevue Mental Hospital in 1939 where he died soon after. Even if the work had been published in Paris in 1936 it would have faced very serious censorship as is seen in Jack Kahane's fear of publishing Miller's Tropics until Anais Nin agreed to underwrite printing and legal defense. The story originally was published underground at the beginning of the 20th Century. The story is of a girl who becomes involved in the theatrical and bohemian world of London in the 1890's. There are no copies reported in OCLC and one copy in the Kinsey Library. Brown cloth, black lettering on spine, wear along outer joints but a good copy throughout. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Sherston's Progress.

8vo. Original blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut; spine just a little sunned, endpapers replaced, but a very nice, copy, brighter than usual. First edition, this being one of 300 numbered copies on hand-made paper, signed by the author. Sherston's Progress is the final book of Siegfried Sassoon's semi-autobiographical trilogy. The book starts with his arrival at 'Slateford War Hospital' (based on Craiglockhart War Hospital). The famous neurologist W. H. R. Rivers is a major character in the book, having a profound influence on Sassoon in real life. Sherston eventually returns to the army and is sent to Palestine and Ireland (where he is introduced to 'The Mister', an alcoholic, eccentric millionaire) and finally the Western Front in France. There he is shot in the head, survives and returns to recover in London, where he meets up with Rivers and sees the armistice celebrations.

Prime Ministerial Document requesting the King's approval for the Appointment of Reverend Percy Scott to the Vicarage of Newport, Barnstaple.

8vo., single sheet on Downing Street headed paper with Prime Ministerial logo and black mourning edges. Filing hole to top left corner otherwise in very good condition. This typed document is signed in ink by Stanley Baldwin and is endorsed in hand by King Edward VIII "Approved ERI". Signed Edward VIII documents are understandably rare. This document was acquired as part of a group of documents, in the mid-1970s, when the previous owner served on the staff of the Prime Minister. There was a pressing need for additional filing space at 10 Downing Street and, after a review of the document holdings, it was determined that several entire categories of papers could be destroyed as being no longer required. Members of the staff were invited to select as keepsakes if they wished a few (non-sensitive) items of historical interest. The subjects were generally clerical appointments or elevations to peerages. To the best of our knowledge, such keepsakes are the only surviving examples of documents of that nature from the period represented.

        Autograph Letter Signed

on Forty-Nine Overstrand Mansions, Prince of Wales Road letterhead [London] October 1, 1936. 4to. 2 pages (recto and verso). To producer Robert Sisk: "I am really glad to read that Barry Fitzgerald has given a superb performance of 'Fluther' I guessed he would. I did all I could to get British International Pictures to use him as 'Capt Boyle' when they did 'Juno' but they wouldn't even listen to me. Bloody fools! I am glad to hear that you are thinking of re-doing 'Juno,' though, strictly speaking (from the point of view of production) it has never been done. I'm sure the production of 'The Plough' was no easy task to do, for I hope anything I may write will have guts & go in it. And, anyhow, no film worth a damn can be an easy thing to do. I will co-operate in every possible way with RKO in any business deal over the production of 'Juno,' & I have already said so to your European Representative who visited me here a day or so ago. But I have to say that my American agent, Richard Madden, of The Richard Madden Play Co., has been very good with my work, & the deal must be done technically through him. But I'm sure there will be no trouble over an agreement."

Ecole Boulle.

Salvador DALI

1936 - Salvador DALI (1904.1989) Manuscrit autographe signé – « Honeur a l’obget ! » Quatre pages in-folio. Slnd (Printemps 1936). Salvador Dali. » [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
