Three wrappered issues of the sci-fi and adventure magazine Astounding Stories: February, March, and April of 1936 comprising the complete novella. Very Good. Pulpy paper typically toned with age. Light dampstaining to back covers of Feb. and March issues, effecting last page of Feb. issue and in a small spot along top margins of both issues. Front covers in very nice shape, very bright, just a bit of wrinkling to Feb, which also has a tiny corner chip to a few pages. Front cover hinge of April a little fragile. A nice set of the horror master's complete novella, published not long before his death.

        Gone With the Wind.

      New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition. Octavo, original gray cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Aunt Clara With love from Margaret Mitchell, June 29, 1936." The recipient was Margaret Mitchell's aunt, Clara Mitchell McConnell. Laid in to the book is Mitchell's calling card (Mr. John Robert Marsh), as well as an autograph note from Margaret Mitchell, which states: "So sorry to hear of your illness. Hope you're going to be better soon. Margaret and John Marsh." Inscribed first editions of Gone With the Wind are scarce, association copies of this caliber seldom enter the market. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents ... it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. ... " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.

        The Romances of Blanche La Mare

      Paris [1936]: Np. First Edition. Octavo. 178p. six very graphic sexual scenes by the erotic artist, Jack Craig. Most copies that have survived have only four of the six images. This work purports to be published in Paris but it is likely that it was printed underground in New York. Even though copies were found in Paris by GI's at the end of World War II, Harry Sidney Nichols was an an antiquarian bookseller who printed high-end erotica for the elite of London. He had formed the Erotika Biblion Society in London but under threat of arrest fled to Paris but when threatened with extradition, he immigrated to New York. He was committed to Bellevue Mental Hospital in 1939 where he died soon after. Even if the work had been published in Paris in 1936 it would have faced very serious censorship as is seen in Jack Kahane's fear of publishing Miller's Tropics until Anais Nin agreed to underwrite printing and legal defense. The story originally was published underground at the beginning of the 20th Century. The story is of a girl who becomes involved in the theatrical and bohemian world of London in the 1890's. There are no copies reported in OCLC and one copy in the Kinsey Library. Brown cloth, black lettering on spine, wear along outer joints but a good copy throughout.

Significant chip to the spine heel, smaller one at the crown, light creasing, tanning, and overall wear, close to very good copy in partially unopened original wrappers.. First Edition. One of 249 numbered copies (this copy unnumbered and unsigned), but a remarkable association copy, INSCRIBED by Nin to her close friend, writer/photographer Dorothy Norman: "For Dorothy / with whom I have spent / the most human and the / most poetic moments of / my life in America / with love / Anais / New York 1940". Nin's second book, inspired by her obsessive relationship with June Mansfield. Nin was part of the large circle of cultural heroes, artists, and literati assembled by and around Alfred Stieglitz at An American Place.

A bright and clean copy in mid twentieth century fine leather binding of half dark blue morocco. Spine with five raised bands, each with three gilt dots. Compartments ruled, lettered and decoration in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Some minor rubbing to the extremities but overall a near fine copy in an attractive leather binding. The binding is unsigned but it certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

This catalogue shows the government exhibits selected that comprise Bronze, Porcelain, Painting, Calligraphy, Jade, Carvings in Red Lacquer, Cloisonné, etc, some of these works were never seen before by Westerners and are from the Palace Museum, The National Museum, The Academia Sinica, The Henan Provincial Museum and the Anhui Provincial Library. The exhibition was well received and attended, attracting a total of 401,768 visitors and increased the study of Chinese art revolutionizing Chinese art history as an intellectual discipline. Peer Gynt is a Norwegian fairy tale on which the play is loosely based, and several of the characters are modelled after Ibsen's own family, notably his parents. These initials have here been intricately illuminated in various colours by Lucia, the daughter of James Joyce who was the one who had the original idea for the book and who paid for its production as a present for her 29th birthday. This is the only project on which the two collaborated. The overall design is by Jack Kahane. Grey wrappers, housed in the publisher's card chemise with printed label on the backstrip and in the slipcase. The additional items, all of which bear the expected mailing folds and other light wear, have been tipped in to the front pastedown, front blank endpaper, and opposite the half title and publication pages. Of significant interest is the two page letter from Lead Belly's wife, Martha Promise who offers an update on her husband's work including radio appearances as well as inquiring as to Marjorie's son Austin Fairbanks (with her idiosyncratic spellings preserved): ""Dear Mrs Fairbanks, How are [you] at this time fine I hope as this leaves us ok Well everything is going alone [read, 'along'] all right Now Huddie did his last program on the air on W.N.Y.C. Sunday he is suppose[d] to start to work next week his leg is doing ok but he still hop one it other than that he is all right I however heard from your Son but I thonk [sic] we Will See him soon. Will how is everything over in France is that cale[?] stork barthering [sic] you I only heard about it over the air So Huddie and i would like to [k]now if it is in your naborhood [sic] Well there is Nuthing new here to talk about every thing is sky high here yet and don[']t look like any thing going down. How are the boys Doing OK I Hope give them our love tell Clifton we are looking for that Letter from him as soon as we he have a spar[e] minute Will I g[u]ess you think this is a a[w]full short Letter but there is not much to say at Present if you don[']t have time to answer right away don[']t worry I am going to keep riting [sic] anyway. Love an[d] Kisses Martha & Huddie."" The volume additionally features a piece concerning Ledbetters' only European appearance in May 1949: a typed letter from Arno-Charles Brun, a well known French radio personality concerning his inability to attend Ledbetter's May 9, 1949 performance at the Hot Club de France on 21 Boulevard Jourdan in Paris but offering the consolation that, his employer, Radiofusion Française would be recording the performance: ""Les exigences de mon service qui me retiondront au studio une partie de la nuite du vendredi 6 mai, m'empêchent de répondre à l'invitation que vous avez ue la très aimable pensée de me faire parvenir. Il vous sera peut-être agréable de savoir que nos services enregistreront M. Huddie LEDBETTER au cours de la représentation qu'il donnera le 9 mai. Der Preis des vorliegenden Bandes von sieben Schweizer Franken war während der allgemeinen Krise viel zu hoch und die finanzielle Situation konnte auch mit der halbmonatlichen Herausgabe der Hefte, die für 25 - 30 Rappen zu haben waren, nicht verbessert werden. Die Produktion wurde nach dem 18. Heft und dem 7. Buch eingestellt, nachdem der Verlag erfolglos in Deutschland und Österreich nach Partnern gesucht hatte. Im Nazideutschland war die Publikation dieses amerikanischen Imports unerwünscht, obwohl Joseph Goebbels dem Führer 1937 18 Micky-Maus-Filme zu Weihnachten schenkte und "sie insgeheim Spass an den Zeichentrickfilmen von Walt Disney hatten" (Laqua, Carsten: Wie Micky unter die Nazis fiel. This deluxe issue of the Bodley Head Ulysses is one of the triumphs of 20th century book production. It established the text for the succeeding 25 years and printed as appendices the International Letter of Protest against Samuel Roth's piracy and the famous legal judgement by John M. Woolsey lifting the ban in America on the publishing of the book. This copy was given as a wedding gift by Ivor Churchill to Gaston Levi. Laid in is a two-page letter from Ivor Churchill, dated 22 February (evidently his reply to Levi's thank-you letter), on Turf Club stationery, saying that he hopes to see Levi on one of his infrequent visits to London ("I prefer the simple pleasures of the country and the activities associated with agricultural pursuits"), reminiscing about the times they "struggled with the problems of welfare at Westminster", and ending "I am glad that you still have interests in this country".

Very good book in very rare, good, restored dust jacket with some paper lining inside the jacket. By consensus the best novel on New York's bohemian life by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist." Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, *The Wicked Pavilion*. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of the Tim Page biography of Powell in *The New York Times Book Review*, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons.       [Saarlouis, Germany: n.d. (ca 1936?)]. Lengthy, unpublished treatise, by a German-Jewish author, on the genetics of the Jewish race. Apparently written, perhaps naïvely, with the intention of justifying the eugenic character of generations of Jewish racial intermarriage and providing "uplift" to German Jews in the face of growing state-sponsored antisemitic sentiment. Heinemann, a general medical doctor with a practice in the German-French border city of Saarlouis, provides a scholarly, deeply-sourced treatise on the nature of genetics and heredity, theories of race-classification, and the particular characteristics of the genetics of the Jewish race which, he appears to theorize, have been affected by Jewish Talmudic law ("le-mino") and by the millenia of suffering of the Jewish people. Heinemann's argument is essentially a eugenic one, and indeed the largest section of his manuscript is devoted to "Die Eugenik des Judentums", with sub-sections dealing with such topics as "Man as the reflection of God's image," "Jews as God's people," and "Jewish intermarriage." The work concludes with surveys of Jewish culture around the world and a discussion of eugenic movements in those nations where Jews have established significant populations. The phenomenon of a German Jew writing on the subject of eugenics at the height of Nazi power is perhaps less ironic than it would seem at first glance. Race-theory and eugenics had become a major preoccupation of German medical thought as early as the 1880s, and Jewish scientists (who comprised the majority of the German medical profession until the drafting of the Nuremberg Race Laws of 1935) were among the most important contributors to German genetic science. But given the special nature of this work, and the epically bad timing of its author, it is no surprise that it never found a German publisher. The manuscript came to us with a large archive of related source material, in the form of newspaper clippings, offprints, pamphlets, journal issues, and correspondence, all dated between 1933 and 1937, which appear to have been the years Heinemann was at work on his manuscript. These include substantial excerpts from the Berlin Jewish daily newspaper Israelitisches Tageblätt (with many pertinent articles marked with red pencil); several issues of the Orthodox German-language newspaper Der Israelit; 48 complete issues of Jüdisches Bibliothek, the literary supplement to the Israelitisches Tageblätt; and numerous pamphlets and offprints, including what appears to be the only issue published of the Mitteilungsblatt des Jüdischen Buchhandels (Jan 1938), an ill-fated journal of the German-Jewish book trade. A complete list of these additions is available on request. Dr. Alfred Heinemann appears to have emigrated to New York by way of England, probably following the Krystallnacht uprising of November, 1938. We find him on the board of a local medical society in Dunkirk, New York in 1940. In the Nazi Restitution files of the state archive of Saarbrucken, Heinemann is still listed as a New York resident in 1951, when he received compensation for the loss of his house, a building plot, and outbuildings in Saarlouis. The Leo Baeck Institute (New York) holds a finished typescript of this manuscript. Substantial holograph manuscript of 210 leaves, with an additional ca. 70 leaves (mixed typescript and holograph) comprising research notes, bibliography, and related drafts. Written in a neat but hard-to-decipher (especially for this non-German cataloguer) hand. Together with a large archive of original source material, including newspaper clippings, pamphlets, periodical issues, and ephemera. Manuscript pages irregularly numbered, many pages with extensive holograph corrections and editorial markings in the author's hand. It is unclear, based on pagination, whether the manuscript is complete; a few sections appear unfinished. Newspaper clippings fragile, many with losses, now conserved in archival sleeves. Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1936. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung, which was renamed Volks-Illustrierte from 1936 to 1938. Many of these astonishing images are masterpieces of the art of caricature, and resulted in Heartfield having to flee for his life.
