Memoirs of the Hawaiin Revolution (3 Volume Set in Original slipcase)

Advertiser Publishing Co., Ltd, Honolulu 1936 - Octavo. Limited to 600 sets published for subscribers. A set of the memoirs of Sanford B. Dole and Lorrin A. Thurston published by the Advertising Publishing Company. This set is numbered 187 with the limitation slip mounted on the lining papers of each volume. Originally written for joint serial publication with Lorrin A. Thurston's memoirs in the Honolulu Advertiser. Thurston's chapter begins with Jack London's arrival on his yacht Snark in 1907. Thurston provides interesting details about London's fixed writing routine, his despising of what today would be called "political correctness" on the racial issues inherent in Hawaii, followed by Thurston's defense. The set is comprised of: Vol. I, Writings of Lorrin A. Thurston, 166p. index; Vol. II. Lorrina A. Thurston, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 664p.; Vol. III Sanford Dole, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 188p. index. From the controversy of Queen Lili'uokalani's authorship of Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen to the issue on the annexation of Hawaii (and even statehood [as Mahan advocated as an early proponent of geopolitical issues], this is an essential set for understanding the History of Hawaii from President Harrison to the period just before the Second World War. Although the three volumes has nearly 1,000 pages of text, the margins are wide and the print is large so that it is eminently readable. Bound in red patterned cloth letrtered in gilt, within blind stamped frame. A very good set with rubbing to joints and gilt fading. Housed in original three decker slipcase. Photograph album of a participant. [Berlin, 1936].

1936. 8vo. Oblong album, leather over cream paper boards, string-tied, silver title and Olympic design to front, twine stitching to perimeter. Contains 56 black and white photographs measuring 310 x 240 mm, mounted with clear photo corners, each leaf separated with webbed tissue guard. Two additional photographs loosely placed within. Some loss to leather spine, verso only, otherwise in very good condition, a pleasing album with crisp images. These images, captured firsthand by a participating athlete in the Olympic games, center around the Berlin Olympic Stadium, where the athletic and track events took place, revealing the photographer's sport. We also find images of runners on a practice course, a high jumper, an equestrian event, spectators, security officials, and guards, some of the latter sporting binoculars for surveillance, others armed with long rifles. Olympic monuments include the Marathon Gate pillars from which was hung the iconic five ring symbol, the enormous receptacle for the Olympic Flame, and one of the sculptures of athletes which today are the subject of discord by some. City streets are saturated with political propaganda flags, whilst symbolic Olympic flags make but a mere discreet dispersing appearance among them. Two views show an airship blimp with the Germany's new national symbol hovering overhead, while a few inner city views show athletes running with the torch ceremoniously for the civilians. Elements of domination, superiority and mastery are captured two-fold in this unusual album of images, first and foremost in the display of a grand competition event of athletic champions from around the world, and secondly, in the less than subtle propaganda that would inevitably pierce the otherwise peaceful images of global collaboration and common ground. Rare to find an album by a professional athlete yet an amateur photographer of these historic Olympic Games.

First edition. *The authorized biography of the boxer famously dubbed \i the Cinderella Man by Damon Runyon after his triumphant comeback fight against Max Baer in June 1935. After wresting the heavyweight crown from Baer, James Braddock retained the title for two years, finally losing it to Joe Louis. This copy is inscribed and signed by Braddock (as 'Jimmy Braddock') on the upper free endpaper, dated in his hand 6/21/37 - one day before he lost the world heavyweight boxing championship title to Louis. The upper pastedown bears a related inscription, of a press representative (surname indecipherable), dated the same and annotated 'Chicago.' (The title bout took place at Comiskey Park, in Chicago). Loosely inserted is a small provenance note, giving the name of the hotel where Braddock signed the book. Ludwig Shabazian, who also drew the illustrations, had known and encouraged Braddock since his early fights in the 1920s. The appendix includes a 'fistic record' (or list of Braddock's fights). In 2005 Braddock was the subject of the film \i Cinderella Man , starring Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Black cloth spine and paper covered boards, upper cover tinted black and decorated in red with Walton & Cotton cipher and fish. Spine defective, front board detached. some minor smudging, generally very good. Ball, Robert. Pencil on paper: 120 drawings (many full page) including map endpapers (somewhat faded), three title page mock-ups, printed title page dated 1935, proof printing of Ball's half-title design, two title page designs dated 1936, numerous vignettes and ornaments, several drawings repeated on tissue (tipped in). 1 vols. 4to. Ball's Illustrations for 'The Compleat Angler' 1935-36. Outstanding maquette of original drawings by Robert Ball (1890-1975) for the Heritage Press edition of the Compleat Angler by Walton & Cotton. As the first title page designs indicate, the edition was planned for 1935, and a printed title page dated 1935 has been tipped in, but the book did not appear until 1936 (Coigney 324).Robert Ball illustrated numerous sporting books during the 1930s, including several for the Derrydale Press: Pteryplegia (1931), John Peel (1932), and The Warwick Woodlands (1934), each in a historical style sympathetic to the individiual work. His designs for The Compleat Angler honor the fashion of the mid-seventeenth century and yet the details are distinctively Ball's own. His drawings of natural scenes, fish, birds, and animals are finely detailed and lively. The illustrations inlcude vignettes and page layouts as well as more elaborate full page drawings. The inside back cover of the notebook bears Ball's address: Robert Ball, 280 West 4th St., Provincetown, Mass. With: a copy of the 1938 Heritage Club reprint (Coigney 332), inscribed by the artist on the flyleaf, "with best wishes of RB [cipher] for Carl 16 May 1639". The recipient was Carl Burger, illustrator of children's books, including Old Yeller and The Incredible Journey".

Keynes' last major work was considered the most influential economic treatise of the 20th century. Keynes' General Theory ranks with Smith's Wealth of Nations as an intellectual event and with Malthus' Essay on Population as a guide for public policy.'The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade-cycle.First in 'A Treatise on Money', 1930, and later in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economics to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate' (PMM 423).Increasingly scarce with such attributes.

        Collected Poems 1909-1935.

London: Faber and Faber,, 1936. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge red, other edges untrimmed. With the supplied dust jacket. Spine and covers faded to edges, a little light foxing to contents. An excellent copy in the supplied dust jacket, with faded spine and some nicks to spine ends. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To G. and Polly Tandy, compts. of Possum. 31.iii.36." Eliot initially met Geoffrey Tandy, a writer, broadcaster and scientist who worked at the Natural History Museum, in a pub. As their friendship deepened, Eliot would frequently visited the Tandies and they also kept up a regular correspondence. Throughout the 1930s, the family would be the first audience on which Eliot tested out the cat poems, both in letters and on visits to the family's Hampshire cottage. In addition, Geoffrey would be the first to present the cat poems to a wider public, as he read parts of Practical Cats on BBC radio on the Christmas Day of 1937, two years before the book was published. Eliot was close with the Tandies and their three children, visiting frequently and exchanging numerous letters. Polly and Eliot's friendship appears to have been very affectionate, with Eliot often referring to Polly as "Pollytandy" or "Pollitandy".

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936., 1936. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Cloth, frontispiece, xiv, 242 pp., introduction. Divided into two major sections we find a strong emphasis on the songs, especially reels, work songs, hollers, the blues, the talkin' blues, ballads, and a miscellany of both white influences and pardon songs. Lead Belly, a double murderer, sung his way to pardons in the Texas and Louisiana Penitentiaries. He spent twelve years on penitentiary farms working in the field, singing and "hollering" under the gun and whip. Through his music you have the background of "jazz," the history of popular and folk music among southern Afro-Americans. His blues, his ballads, his work-songs sum up the observations, attitudes and opinions of a large part of the southern Afro-American population. This is the book of Lead Belly---a creative genius among Afro-American folk artists. His story is told in terms of tunes, texts, and guitar accompaniments. It contains biographical material and annotation of the songs in his own words. Following Lead Belly's release from prison in 1934, John and Alan Lomax sought to manage Lead Belly's career as a performer. John A. Lomax brought Lead Belly to New York from the South, after he had sung his way out of prison, and has worked with him compiling and editing his songs and story. No previous substantial biography of a Black musician prior to the publication of this book, which was a commercial failure at the time and received a long review in the New York Times. The book still stands as one of the best biographies of a black musician. Lead Belly spent the last fifteen years of his life performing, influencing the music scene in blues, and eventually rock 'n' roll. Former owner's inked name on front pastedown sheet, minor foxing to a few early pages and to the fore-edges, else a near fine, internally clean copy, bright copy, lacking the elusive dust jacket. Scarce and elusive copy of an important book. Housed in a cloth slipcase.
